ideally you should live in a high rise apartment block in a well developed (but new building)... have a look at some of the apartments in Dubai Marina or JBR... they are likely to be bug free and have relatively good maintenance contracts by no means should you move into a villa... coz then creepy crawlies are guaranteed!

Sorry to spoil all this positivity (I didn't thumb you down Izzy), but Petrofac has hundreds of employees in Sharjah. One would think they could find 20 "warm and friendly" volunteers amongst themselves. Donating food or money is one thing, setting an example of personal participation is something else. maybe they just need more additional hands?!

Can anyone advise on this? My cleaning lady ( she actually is a maid with another family) from Sri Lanka wants her daughter to come out here as a maid. She said doesn't want to go thru an agency. How can she help here daughter come out? when you find a potential employer for your maid's daughter they would then need to go first to the Sri Lankan embassy here and do the necessary paperwork... and also to the immigration for contracts, entry permit etc... if they are prepared to do all this then they will not need an agent to be involved <em>edited by HorizonMum2 on 16/07/2014</em>

i'd recommend going to Beauty Plus Salon in Satwa... they have offers available through this deal site called pinkladydeals (or something like that... sorry don't have the link anymore as I just call and go) pros - is cheap!! hair botox is only around 400dhs in total for appox bra strap length hair (18inches I think if I remember correctly)... might have changed though so worth calling them up or going in for a free consultation... i went there last in may but that was for rebonding... - very good hair therapist (Alizeh) who really knows hair treatments like none other!!! for straightening alone she does around 10-15 rebonding jobs every week - treated hair stays lovely, frizz free and soft/shiny cons - the salon is in a very dodgy little building opposite the satwa bus station - it's not a high end salon so don't expect fancy chairs, floor to ceiling mirrors, etc... but they work with good products and end of the day the job gets done! I've been going to them for the past three years and very happy with their service... please note that I have only been there twice as I only touch up once a year... make sure you get the treatment done by the manager - her name is Alizeh... and drop in for a consultation first... she doesn't push everyone for the treatment as she will need to first see your hair to decide whether it would be suitable for you... word of warning though don't try any other treatment at the salon... their waxing and Moroccan bath are horrid!! I thought it was cheap so tried it but had a bad experience... the salons only strength is their hair services!

our school is GREAT that way... most of their learning is through play! and they get a couple of free play time in between the school day (in addition to their break time play)... wish my school was more like that when I was growing up here!

well... in case ur looking for the larger ones then unfortunately Dragonmart is the cheapest place to get your hands on one... we've purchased a couple of them for our school and they even offered to clean/service/repair it for us within a year in case anything went wrong... for one of them we felt it was too slow and took it in... quick cleaning later it was back up to speed... the shop in Dragonmart we picked it up from is Diersheng Kitchen Hotel Supplies... Hi... we've been at Horizon for the past three years and that area is always a lil chaotic as there are so many schools in that safa area... one of the access roads to sh zayed road was closed earlier this year due to the canal project and traffic was a bit manic for a week or so but then RTA stepped in and added an extra lane and now things are much better... at this stage I don't think anyone knows what changes will be made and when... but at present everything is fine... I think the only challenge that the school faces (which is also common with other many other schools) is the lack of sufficient parking spaces! Wow you're lucky to have been offered places at both Horizon and DESS! :) Both schools are very good but they are also different in terms of their approach and teaching so you would actually need to decide which approach you and your children are most happy with :) In terms of location access to DESS is also quite chaotic with so many other schools (and churches) being in the same area! The morning traffic into Oud Metha road can be quite painful... but then again - that's Dubai for you! Wishing you all the best in making a decision :)

I've been using them for well over a year... their customer service staff are very responsive via phone and email and I've been charged very fairly for the items shipped... and like Flames mentioned, they allow you to consolidate your shipments so it actually ends up being cheaper... I've always estimated costs via SnS (website) and it always seemed more expensive... plus their lifetime charges are much more as well... I was lucky to get the MyBox account lifetime charge FREE and they keep running that promotion on and off... try getting in touch with this lady there [email protected]... she might be able to help as she's the one I often deal with... i have noticed that my items ordered that get shipped from the UK address gets here a lot sooner than the ones shipped from the US address... probably due to the courier out dates... thanks for letting us know about that Flames... will make sure i only order prior to Tuesdays then! :) <em>edited by HorizonMum2 on 26/06/2014</em>

hi... Children's City is in Dubai Creek Park... you basically hire out the facility (room) and then bring in all your own catering, décor, entertainment, etc... there's a limit on how many people they can accommodate though so you need to keep that in mind... you said you had 30-35 kids... and I'm assuming that many of them will be accompanied by at least one parent... so that will automatically bring up your guest list by a fair bit... you might find it more comfortable to be accommodated inside a party hall or restaurant or hotel ballroom (of course all depending on your budget)... would be happy to give you more advice on this... can you pls pop me a mail on [email protected] many restaurants have party halls that you can hire for the purpose... inclusive of food and venue it will work out to be approx. 65/- onwards per head... and as the venue improves so will the per head price... or maybe you have a friend who has a party hall in their building or community that you can hire for the same purpose? always worth checking out... I still feel it might be quite warm to have the party outdoors in September (even if it's late evening)... so perhaps the best for you and the other guests would be an indoor venue... Cheeky Monkey are great... but if you're budget for entertainment is lesser you can still find alternate suppliers at more competitive rates... also for cakes the choices are endless... once you decide whether you prefer fondant or buttercream cakes (and of course of your budget for this) I will be in a better position to advise you of the best place to get this let me know when you've sent the mail and then I'll take off my address from here...

depends on what ur going there for :) when we were teenagers it was the best place to get doped, chill out and bike ride! now that we're older (a lot older)... we go there for the delicious sea food, relaxed atmosphere and lovely beaches... if you're into history/culture/etc. there are a lot of old churches , relics, sites to explore <em>edited by HorizonMum2 on 22/06/2014</em>

we went last year during the eid break (and timed it to be there for Halloween as well!) and loved it as it's the perfect Disney experience for younger kids! it's small and hence easy to pace out and complete... no crazy queues so we could actually go on most of the rides without having to wait or purchase FastPasses... we wanted the whole Disney experience for the kids so went all out and stayed at the Disneyland hotel... the kids loved it... it came complete with kiddie robes, toiletries, slippers, breakfast with the characters and even goodnight stories by a Disney princess :) we got a good deal of 30% off 'coz we booked in advance and we got a two day one night stay so basically got to visit the park on two days... and hence spaced out our rides (went on some of them twice as well)... plus got lots of time to enjoy the hotel's amenities (such as the garden maze, etc) and yesss... I recommend a visit to Ocean Park as well... lovely theme park... though a bit more crowded than Disney (I knowww shocker right??!)

if you'd like to try it in an indian way... follow this recipe: Prep time - under 10 mins Cook time - under 20 mins Serves -2 Ingredients needed Beetroot - 250 grams or 2 medium sized beetroots Thick Curd - 1/2 cup Turmeric powder - a pinch Salt as needed For the grinding Grated coconut -1/3 cup Green chilli -1-2 Ginger - half inch piece Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds/jeera seeds - 1/4 tsp For the seasoning Oil - 1 tsp Mustard -1/2 tsp Red chillies -1 -2 Curry leaves - few leaves Preparation Grate beetroot and keep it aside.(use the grater with big holes) Grind coconut, green chilli, ginger, jeera seeds and mustard seeds to a smooth paste. Method Cook grated beetroot with less water adding salt and turmeric powder till soft. Add the ground paste and cook for few more minutes in low flame till the raw taste of the coconut goes. Allow it to cool. Add whisked curd and check for salt. Add salt if required and mix well. Heat a tsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add red chillies, curry leaves and pour it over the mix. Goes GREAT with plain rice! :)

most of the clients they have seem to be bankers or businesspeople... so I guess they can afford it... and Dubai being Dubai... lots of people spend that much on themselves a month anyway... whether it be personal training a their homes (personal trainers charge average 250dhs per session... and assuming you have 12 sessions a month that's already 3K!) or controlled meal plans from places like Lively, etc... or even just weightloss machines etc at these salons! u'll never believe how much the head trainer at Symmetry charges!! rumoured to be at 750dhs per hour... now that I could never afford!

she says - clsoe to 3 k a month. SL - i won a week trial session with them in January - if it can still be used to you want it? when I enquired around a year or so ago it was around 3K a month... if you go every alternate day for 1hr sessions with one of their regular trainers... they are flexible though and perhaps if you go at off peak times they can offer a better rate... best thing is to go in for one of their trial/introductory sessions to get a feel of the place... I've trained with Ghazi, Saika and Alexandra... all great!

mannnn I miss that place!! they take fitness and exercise and training to a completely different level... I'm one of their 'success stories'... 3 months of 1hr sessions every alternate day transformed me completely... dropped 2 dress sizes, 11kgs, and looked/felt fitter and finer than ever before... was part of a challenge so my training was complimentary and I would have gone there in a heartbeat if they weren't so expensive... unfortunately at the time I wasn't working and forking out close to 3K a month wasn't an option. Now I am working and can actually afford it but my office is in the complete opposite direction and can't squeeze time in with these damn school drop offs, pick ups, bedtimes etc... excuses I know... but someday! strongly recommend it though... they're a no nonsense gym! don't go there expecting your typical fitness first type gym with lots of treadmills, cycles, etc... they have none of those! every session is a personal training session... it can get very expensive if you want to train with the head trainer... but if you're ok with going to some of the more junior staff (who are all excellent as well) then it might work out slightly cheaper! I went there almost two years ago... but I've only JUST increased one dress size and a couple of kilos (simply coz I haven't bothered to exercise after that!! I know I know... I'm horrid)... so they're weight loss is almost permanent!! :)

I'm looking at this at the moment as well... they have a groupon deal for stay during Ramadan... and it's working out to be 899/- per room (for 2 adults) per night on a weekend stay... and the only issue is that they are charging extra 250dhs per child per night and we have two toddlers... so that's gonna work out to be a lot more for us when the kids barely eat anything!!

I seem to remember Rick Dees doing an American Top 40 countdown too, or am I confusing him with Casey Kasem? How about the kids Friday Disney movie on Channel 33, do you remember that?? Or the waterfall interludes on telly that went on forever, or being in the middle of a great programme and all of a sudden they switched to something else. hahahah yessss... the waterfall interludes!!! hehehhee must have been the old fashioned censor board!! do you remember having to watch GULFFAX?? the silly green classifieds that used to come on all day till Ch33 switched on at 2pm or 4pm (can't even remember the exact time anymore!)

I honestly believe a big mistake parents do these days is expecting to be their child's 'friend' instead of 'parent'... which is why in such a situation I would not advocate a polite lovey-dovey approach to addressing such a serious issue... that whole approach is not about parenting! it may perhaps work and possibly be a better approach for younger kids... but as the kids grow older and more rebellious, as a parent you really do need to step up and make hard decisions! Like everyone, I want my children to love me. I want them to sing my praises and appreciate me. But if I'm doing my job right, they'll get mad and not like me sometimes. They'll roll their eyes, moan and groan, and wish they'd been born into another family. All that's NORMAL! Seeking to be our child's friend can only lead to permissiveness and choices made out of desperation because we fear losing their approval. That's not love on our end; that's need! and in places like Dubai... such a 'needy' approach may result in life changing situations for the whole family!

This thread has kept me in stitches all day - my tuppence worth is Japanese toilets are the best, heated seats OMG! Bum guns, hit or miss (sorry!), bidets too many versions, each to their own, I'm a wiper! I agreeeeeee... Japanese toilets are the bestttt!!! they even have a musical/running water noise so that even gross sounds are drowned!

we got an insurance card for our maid from Noor Takaful... they do one for AED 1500/- for domestic help and cover quite an extensive number of clinics/hospitals/pharmacies in Dubai... probably worth looking into it... the whole process too approximately 5 days for us as their medical dept take a bit of time doing all the health checks, etc.

wow that looks real neat but I can't say I've seen anything like it here... I do however have a very nice sofa cum bed that opens up to a proper queen sized bed but is small and compact as seating otherwise... I am looking to sell it as it doesn't go with the new décor at our new home... The master bathroom in ours has both!! edited by Geordie expat on 09/06/2014 same here... and not just the master bedroom but ALL bedrooms!! imho, why not just make use of the best of both worlds? use the shattaf (on low pressure) to clean oneself and by having it at a low pressure you reduce the risks of poo splattering anywhere or wetting the toilet area... and once clean, then dry down with some toilet paper? that's what I've been told to do from a very young age... but then again I'm from the indian subcontinent where we didn't have pipes but mugs and a tap in reachable distance! I've found the wet loo situation in some malls and public areas where they don't have a proper absolving area for prayer time... and that's when some women try to clean themselves with water from the shattafs or sinks... I've even witnessed some arab women cleaning their feet in a sink that I just washed my hands in less than two minutes before (she was vicariously balancing on the narrow marble counter!)

So from what you say, the prices stated in the handbook are accurate (apart from the 9% fee hike) and there are no addition surprises financially through the year? that's right... the only extras during the financial year would be the one of two outdoor trips per term (which are optional attendance), free dress days, bake sales, end of year gifts, any extra curricular activities, etc... which I'm assuming is pretty standard in any school

the breakdown of annual fees for the academic year 2013-2014 is as follows: FS1 - Tuition fee (AED 20,934) plus Others (AED 6466 + AED 2000)... total fees is AED 29,400 FS2 - Tuition fee (AED 20,934) plus Others (AED 12,296 + AED 2000)... total fees is AED 35,230 Years 1 to 6 - Tuition Fee (AED 29, 319) plus Others (AED 8381 + AED 2000)... total fees is AED 39,700 The OTHERS expenses are for the following: Supplies & Consumables Additional Specialist Activities (IT & Media) (Hardware & Software) Enhanced Mobile Technology & Additional Learning plus Activities Out-with the Core areas as far as I know it's not 'optional services' but part of the fees... in the school fee breakdown which appears at the back of the invoices it's termed as 'OTHERS' and not 'OPTIONAL SERVICES'

The Fridge is great, and they do great rates for children's parties. They're just in Al Quoz near Al Manara so easy to find, quite close to SZR. It's a big warehouse 'blank canvas' sort of space so you can make it your own, and quite alternative as a venue. Children's City in Creek Park also have empty party halls that you can rent out... and you will need to bring in décor, food, etc... I think they rent them out in two hour slots... dirt cheap!

do you mean school year or school day?? currently our school day is from 7:35am to 2:20pm but from Sept it will be 7:20am to 2:40pm Glad my kids are not at Horizon school! That is just too early. it just depends on what year group they are in... the younger kids, for example, finish off at 1pm... the earlier / staggered timings is to help accommodate an extra language lesson and also try and avoid parents getting stuck in traffic due to the canal works... the diversions are already creating havoc over these past couple of months

not sure what the new rules are... but the rules you mention have ALWAYS been in place... as in the 20K salary and the 2 bedroom apartment (even prior to Nov 2013)... my husband has been sponsoring my mother for the past 6 years and we have had to renew this every year As per regulations, you have to sponsor both your mother and father together and show proof that you are their sole provider and that there is no one to take care of them in your home country. However, if your parents are divorced or one is deceased, you should carry documentary proof, when visiting DNRD to obtain the entry permit visa, which is the first stage before you can apply for a residence visa. You also need to obtain a medical insurance policy for each parent with minimum coverage of AED 600 per year [b'>[i'>(this rule was not enforced for us because we were only renewing but will probably be enforced for new applications!) [/i'> [/b'> Documents required for entry visa • Typed application form • Original passport of sponsor • Passport copy of parent/s & 1 photo • Proof of relationship from your embassy/consulate attesting both relationship and that you are sole provider for your parent/s • Copy of job contract for the sponsor or salary certificate from employer. You will also need to submit a copy of DEWA bill and your tenancy contract showing you have adequate space in your house for your parents (minimum 2 bedroom apartment). You need to get your tenancy contract stamped by the Land Department, certifying it is minimum 2 bedroom. In case your tenancy contract does not mention that you have at least 2 bedrooms, then you need to get an affidavit from your landlord and submit this as well. Procedure: • Take the documents and go to General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs - Dubai. Submit along with a letter from your side appealing on humanitarian grounds for entry visa for your parent/s. Enclose copies of all above documents along with your contact numbers. The Approval Committee will either confirm or reject your application within two weeks. If approved, go to next step. • Have a registered typist complete the form after paying the fees. • Go to the residency section of DNRD and hand in the documents. • Entry Permit will be sent by Empost usually within 48 hours, or if you have applied for urgent visa, then you should receive it from the counter in a few minutes. Fees: - AED 2,000 refundable deposit (keep receipt safely for renewal or reimbursement, as this is paid back only when the visa is cancelled or in case your parent dies) - AED 110 application fee + typing centre fee (or pay AED 100 more for urgent application) Convert entry visa to residence visa for parents Once your parents enter the country with the entry visa, you must convert it to a residency visa no later than 60 days from the date of entry. Documents required for residence visa • Application form & 3 photos of parent • Original passport of parent/s and sponsor • Original entry permit • Health card or medical insurance policy for parent/s • Refundable deposit receipt • Original job contract or salary certificate of the sponsor Fees: - AED 110 residency fees each year + typing centre fee - AED 100 urgent application (optional) - AED 10 Empost fees Procedure: • Do a health check up and obtain a medical card. • Take the documents and go to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs - Dubai. • Have one of the typists there complete the form for you after paying the fees. • Go to the residency section and hand in the documents. • The passport/s with the residency visa stamp will be sent to you through Empost.

we usually just leave her here... but then again we're never gone for longer than two weeks at a stretch... we tried coordinating her leave with ours but that wasn't very feasible as her kids don't have school holidays at that time so there's no point in her going back home then!

do you mean school year or school day?? currently our school day is from 7:35am to 2:20pm but from Sept it will be 7:20am to 2:40pm
