yeahhh but the thing is I don't actually need one permanently... and, in all honesty, can't be bothered to buy one now and then sell it via dubizzle... I'd rather just pay someone who already has one a small rental fee of let's say 300dhs to use it for a couple of hours... thanks for the lead anyway! :)

their wedding was this year in august (at least as per their fb posts) and in Hilton jumeirah (where the per head cost is just around AED 130 which is hardly lavish... saw some pics of the venue on their albums and all the décor couldn't have cost them more than 1000 bucks... I know the typical suppliers most of these goan/mangy catholic weddings use... anyway... since u know them you obviously know much more than me as I'm just basing stuff for the social media sites and posts... as per the guy's sister or sister-in-law (cant remember who now) they couple used to visit the dogs almost every week so not sure if that's true or not I don't agree with them asking for money for the legal battle... but am really hoping some kind lawyer offers to take up the case probono... it won't bring the pets back but at least it may save some other animals from the same misery...

try the AL WASL SPORTS CLUB... they have a hotel based in the club called the London Suites Hotel... they a have a banquet hall... perhaps you can work on a rental for that but in my experience you have to buy food from them as well... but worth a try if you offer a rental... it can accommodate upto 150 guests

I understand that the shelter is a business and like all other businesses has costs to run... the news-worthiness of this article is in the fact that the four lives (albeit being pets) were not strays... they belonged to someone... someone who was paying the bills (even though it was intermittent)... relate it to hospitals... where comatose people are kept on life support systems... so many times newspapers have reported about cases here in hospitals of people getting huge bills because their relatives are lying on ventilators... but what do the hospitals do? they don't just switch off the machine without approval of the patient's relatives... they come to an agreement... the newsworthiness of this article is [b'>[u'>that someone took that decision on behalf of someone else when they did not have the right to[/u'>[/b'>... (its not like at your drycleaners... where if you don't collect the outfit they have a right to sell it!!) these are real living breathing creatures and they were not strays... if we say it's alright for such decisions to be made today in the case of people's pets when will we ever draw the line? will we permit hospitals to murder our premature children coz our insurance doesn't cover the nicu costs? I think it's the 'principle' of the whole thing that's got everyone upset...

100% fault lies with the owner and they should not be condoned for their action. From what I understand, the husband started a business last year and is struggling, but with any new business set up, there is always going to be that difficult patch and one must always have a backup in savings. They did not want to rehome the dogs even though they were financially in crisis and could not pay the kennel bills. Now this to me is simply being selfish. No dog should ever be housed in a kennel for more then 2 to 3 months. These guys have kept them there since march this year. If one truly loved their dogs, they would move to other emirates where accommodation is cheaper (and there are alot of pet owners who do so) and they would never have let their dogs suffer this way. An animal rescue organization introduced them to this kennel with a discounted rate. Personally, I think these guys are trying the blame game for their own negligence. On the other hand the kennel is a nightmare to any animal. This place has really horrifying reviews and needs to be shut down immediately. The owner however should take legal action on the couple and recover his money but otherwise should be banned from any animal related actives or business in the future. that's quite harsh eco-chic... I am one of those people who never thought about back-up savings when I was in my mid-20s... yes now that I'm in my 30s and have a family having a backup savings plan is a big thing... but when I was younger I really felt that I could take on anything and still make it through... which is what I think the couple were going through... their plan was to only kennel their pets for 3 months... but their lives must have taken a complete U-turn when they discovered that they were pregnant... living together, pregnant, with only enough money to choose between doctor appointments or kennel fees... sorry but I can only imagine how scared, confused and distressed they must have been... they took things in the order of priority that they should have... first booked in doctor appointments, then get the necessary approvals for getting married (by the way for Indians even at the consulate it can take a couple of months till you get all the paperwork necessary)... and with regards to moving to another emirate... I don't think that would been an option till after they were married as other emirates are also quite strict about 'family' accommodation... with regards to giving the pets up for adoption that's probably the absolute last alternative... if it were a child (and for most pet owners, their pet is equivalent to their child) would a parent give it up for adoption and never see them again [u'>[b'>or [/b'>[/u'>send them away to a cheap boarding home with weekly visits till they were in a better position to rehome them? not sure about many people on here but I'm sure would have chosen the later option... I think we're all expecting a bit too much from a young couple who were just trying very hard to make ends meet and deal with the responsibilities they took on in their happier times...

I think a lot of this just has to do with crazy timing... from the earlier post made by Enid on this forum, her email address would have directed anyone to her fb page... on this it shows pics of their recent wedding (august this year)... so in my thinking this is what I feel the situation was: - guy loses job smack in between the recession... struggles to find full time employment... girl, as an admin asst cant be making more than 7K in salary... - couple have been co-habiting in an old independent villa (so probably the rent was peanuts compared to what some of us are paying... I still know some people living in villas in satwa/jaffiliya sharing space and paying only 40K) - somewhere in Feb this year they were forced to leave their villa due to legal reasons... no sharing allowed... only for families... etc... and had to relocate to an apartment (the small apartments in satwa that are behind shk zayed road are pretty price competitive (I have a friend who stays there are pays only 30K for a 2bedroom... but dodgy place though with a lot of labourers as well!) - the building says initially that pets are ok but when the couple comes in with four large dogs the landlord says no... couple search out for the cheapest dog shelter... and finds Doggie Palace... work out a great deal for three months and think that by then the guy will find a job and be better placed... - they struggle to meet payments but put in as much as they have in regular installments... - come May/June they find out they're pregnant!! all **** breaks lose... they realize that they need to book in a maternity package (even the cheapest one will cost them at least 10K... and going back home is not an option considering she's the only breadwinner) - they need to distribute payments... and more importantly GET MARRIED or else the child will not be legally allowed to be born here - they plead for extensions at the shelter (but cant explain their situation due to the legal implications of being pregnant out of wedlock) - they quickly tie the knot in a rushed ceremony in august and then probably have to divide payments between antenatal visits and Doggie Palace - come November and they are in this predicament... I don't think they planned for all this... but that's just life... **** happens! They were basically trying to save everything... their life in Dubai, their four lovely dogs and also their unborn child... quite a feat for a couple in their mid 20s... just wishing them all the patience and best wishes for their months ahead... hopefully the arrival of the baby will help ease the wounds caused by this tragedy

i think ur talking about the restaurant 'Bu Qtair Cafetaria' they are located next to the umm suqeim public library... if you googlemaps 'Bu Qtair Jumeirah Dubai' you will get the exact location. but be warned... they get VERY busy (especially on weekends and once you place your order you usually have to wait for an hour before they serve you!) the fish & prawns aren't 'cheap' as before... and they tend to price differently for different nationalities! so keep that in mind! it's basically a little port-a-cabin where all the cooking gets done and the food is served on plastic tables/chairs just outside it... the ambience sucks but food's good... you get the feeling like you're eating somewhere on a beach in coastal india! so if you're going go for the food and not the environment (though you do eat with a view of the gorgeous Burj Al Arab)

where do you live... the price is purely dependant on that... salons in deira and ghusais will do it for you for as less as 40dhs per blowdry (for normal shoulder length hair)... so you really need to first advise on location

in january the weather is still quite nice outdoors for a party... especially if you were to do a casual day in the park and the kids can run around and have loads of fun... alternatively if you're looking for a small party hall type scenario you should look at all the hotel apartments (the ones in ghusais and deira are the cheapest)... options include Tulip Inn Ghusais, Dunes Hotel, Flora Creek, etc... they offer indoor party halls with food catering for as cheap as AED40/- per head...

i think generally with 4 yearolds they are quite happy just running about being silly... swings, slides and a trampoline sound just the sort of things required... to add to the WOW factor... get a bubble machine (this usually generates loadssss of laughter!)... you can even buy cheap fairy wings at discount stores like DaytoDay for 4-5dhs each... not sure if you can tame them down to actually work at an arts & crafts table... but if need be you could just get them to make their own glitter wish jar... Thanks horizonmum2.. could you please advise what subjects are studied for eg in key stage 2..also do they have formal assessments for the key stages..sorry couldnt find any sat results on their .website. tia..appreciate your time and effort... if you go on the school website and click on the 'OUR CHILDREN' icon, then click on the 'KEY STAGE 2' icon, then click on any of the classes mentioned, for example, '3S'... then click on 'Week at a Glance' option you will be able to see what they are learning this week... this is updated on a weekly basis... sorry that I can't be of much help with what subjects are covered in KS2 as my DD is still in yr2 and i only volunteer to help in her class so am only really aware of what topics they are currently working on... with regards to the SATS results... this is what i got off the website but it's only till the academic year 2011-2012... nothing for the last year yet... Hi all... sorry for the delay in replying but I wanted to ensure that I got all my facts right before posting on here... I had a discussion with the Head of Transition at Horizon and she verified that [b'>ALL[/b'>[u'>[/u'> yr6 students last year got places into secondary schools. I also approached six of the parents who had children in yr 6 and they have all confirmed that their children and all their classmates got places in secondary schools. But were they at the schools they wanted ? lol I was concerned to see the number of pupils in your class - total 26 - is this typical ? seems a lot... @Colours - the no homework policy was introduced 3 or so years ago as a result of research being published that supported the idea that homework for pupils of this age is not beneficial and serves no purpose... we're at Safa and we have the same (Safa and Horizon were in partnership at the time) - the home links are on the website but I confess we've never done any.... edited by Doubting Thomas on 17/11/2013 no of course not all of them got into the school they wanted... just like i haven't been offered a job at Google as much as I would have loved to work for them... entry into a senior school is subject to many criteria and if you go online onto the school websites you'll see them list out their criterion and order of preference given... the child's academic excellence is only one part of this whole ratio... in addition to this preferences are given on other outstanding achievements (whether it be in drammatics or sport or art or music), or preferences given if there is more than one child applying or if a sibling is in a sister school, preferences given on corporate debentures, preferences given on nationality, the list is quite long in some cases... so if your child is academically brilliant but has not been able to show any outstanding evidence of their extracurricular finesse in drama or sport or art or music, for example, they might not qualify to enter DC... with regards to the number of children in the class... from the time we started at Horizon (FS2 level) we've always had anything from 23-26 children in class... this number even fluctuates sometimes in between term since some expat children do move mid-year due to relocation. This has never been an issue for me as the school maintains a very healthy adult to child ratio... in early years and KS1 this is achieved through a teacher, a teaching assistant and at least two parent helpers in class... for the older years the ratio drops as children are more independent and also sometimes the class numbers start reducing as well... one yr5 class, for example, may have only 22 children. with regards to the Homelinks we actually find that as the FUN part of schoolwork... lots of arts&craft stuff... lots of online research... and generally stuff that the children can work on with a little support from their parents or caregiver... of course even we get lazy at times and don't always stick with doing it but every school day there always seems to be something or the other to do whether its practising writing out sentences or phonics or daily reading books...

definitely HK if you have younger children... they can pretty much go on ANY ride there... and plus you dont have to bother with huge queues... get to meet and take photos with all the characters... and the disney hotels themselves are so much cheaper that you can actually stay in one and enjoy all those attractions as well (the breakfast with the characters was such a wonderful treat!)... we stayed at the HongKong Disneyland Hotel and LOVED IT!

why not rent out a villa at the Palm and then you could do this all by the beach just outside your property... also, please note that the DTCM charges per entertainer is NOT APPLICABLE for weddings, birthdays etc (i know coz i'm a wedding planner and i deal with this on a regular basis with the hotels) also look at some of the beach properties OUTSIDE DUBAI... like Ajman Kempinski do you require alcohol at the event? if not you could also look at hotels in sharjah <em>edited by HorizonMum2 on 17/11/2013</em>

no these homelink projects or activities are not compulsory but the majority of the students do them... they bring this into class and each project is discussed so that all children are included in that learning process... i've helped out for the past year in class so i have seen evidence of this at many occassions... the teachers do promote this quite heavily in class so your child will eventually pester you as a parent to help out or then ask for laptop access to do the research themselves... these are not recorded or graded (at least to my knowledge) pocketrocket, from your previous posts, it seems like you made the switch to JPS... this is also a lovely school (my child does some afterschool activities at their campus) and i have a few friends whose children study there... my only concern with the GEMS network of school has been the fees really... and the general size (bigness) of the school... i've heard they offer a great deal of support for assisted learning... kudos to them for that... not many schools in dubai offer that

there are a lot of similarities in the way the curriculum is taught and delivered at both schools... so what you really need to do is go for a school tour for both and see which one you (and especially your child) feel comfortable with... my DD goes to Horizon and i know some mums at Safa and each of us are biased to the school our children attend... so really it all boils down to which one you feel most comfortable at... the one advantage that Safa has is the new premises sorry can't give any feedback on the GEMS IB school as I do not know anyone who is currently enrolled there...

i can share my thinking about this (but please note that this does not voice the school's justification of it!) the school has a 'no homework' policy but that does not mean that the children aren't reinforcing their learning at home... the children do revise the learning done at school in a variety of ways - reading and literacy through the reading books that come home each week... families can choose how many books they want per week in the early years and once they are at a certain level of reading children basically choose their own book from the library from the specific band colour section and can change books as often as they want (even every day like my DD) - numeracy practice through online tools such as Maths Whizz... most of the children i know at school have an online subscription to this (at a subsidised charge through school) and practice their math work on this medium - a list of home-link projects that are changed each term that focus on the class theme for that term... if for example, they are learning about festivals of the world, home link projects would include making a fact sheet/poster about a festival from your home country, or writing a letter to a friend abroad about how you celebrated a festival, or researching how christmas is celebrated around the world, or making your own advent calendar, etc. so, you see, the children still end up learning and reinforcing their lessons without the pressure of a more formal homework system not sure why many of the schools don't follow the same policy but i guess it takes years and years of change for something this radical to be accepted... i can cite an example from a completely different syllabus... the indian curriculum... it's only in the last few years that the examination policy for primary has been abolished... up until then even children as early as yr 1 had to undertake a formal examination at the end of each term and school year.... not all methods are easily adopted... so as parents you just have to choose what you feel would work best for your child and your family...

Hi, possibly stupid question but have you called Arenco? They have some great 3 bed villas near Al Ghazal mall currently advertised at 150k. Not sure whether there are any available but worth a try. Maybe go there and have a look around to see whether any will be freed up soon? ETA: I'm not referring to the single-storey villas which were recently refurbished and which are overpriced. Rather the terraced white double-storey ones a bit further down (I think they're called Hudaiba). edited by WhiteOrchid on 14/11/2013 i did already :( and my name's down on the waiting list... but they aren't even willing to tell me how far along the list i am! :(

thanks mumofmoo... i'm trying and have put my name on waiting list at lots of places... the challenge is that most agents are trying to push two properties at us (one the refurbished villas just behind al ghazal mall and the other is the refurbished arenco type villas just next to mosque between Spinneys umm al sheif and beach road) i'm looking for a compound type villa, 3 bedroom, preferrably single storey that has at least a reasonably sized private garden...and all this for 160K... i don't mind if it's old and shabby looking (personally i prefer those to the fancy new ones as i feel it gives the home a lot of character)... if u do see of any on your travels around the area, please do ping in on here... thanks...

Hi all... sorry for the delay in replying but I wanted to ensure that I got all my facts right before posting on here... I had a discussion with the Head of Transition at Horizon and she verified that [b'>ALL[/b'>[u'>[/u'> yr6 students last year got places into secondary schools. I also approached six of the parents who had children in yr 6 and they have all confirmed that their children and all their classmates got places in secondary schools.

i called the guy Jason but he said he wasnt aware of any... and that he would get a colleague to call me... obviously wasnt too impressed with my budget (a measly 160K) for a 3bedroom... anyway... hounding dubizzle like never before!

you'll be able to find a nice one in barsha for that price... i've been looking for 3 bedrooms in ummsuqeim and sufouh but am getting nothing lesser than 180-200K... so notably a 4 or 5 bedroom will be much more... all the best

thanks all... yeah he's definitely talented (probably the only one in our family that will ever make it big... unless my hubby's score on Warcraft ever gets him famous!) Jussie / Starberry - i was actually hoping to get the tickets much cheaper... I've already bought two front pit ticket so have already burned out my wallet... looking for someone desperate to get rid of their tickets for much much lesser... or even (hopefully) for free... thanks for your offer anyway... and unfortunately the regular standing tickets are all sold out :( i already checked on dubizzle but prices are ridiculous!! especially seeing that i'm not actually going to see alicia keys or jason derulo... but just my nephew!! :)

thanks all... would have loved to buy a few more tickets but i've already spent close to a 1000 bucks on tickets :( was hoping to win a couple of tickets so that i could take the family along... if i dont get any positive response till tomorrow i might just end up buying the tickets... don't want anyone in the family to miss out on Josh's moment of fame! :) Daza - pls clap SUPERRRRRRR hard! :) he needs all the support he can get!
