I'll check out Maya at al Murooj, thanks. Thanks for the link, tkoshy. Safa Park is not that far really but I don't have a car so only go to the Choitrams there if I happen to be in the area for something . Chappan Bhog sounds worth checking out (despite poor Time Out review). edited by Jadey on 07/02/2012

Waitrose is closest. I asked in there this afternoon and the woman on the cheese counter didn't know what I was talking about. I've also asked in Carrefour MoE several times and I think I've probably asked in Geant too. If I just looked and didn't see it then I could put it down to just missing it but I've actually been asking about it. I need to come shopping with you Anon! :)

Lulu's is a place I thought may stock it but it's also not near where I live (Old Town). Anon, I look for it on the cheese counter. Made a curry tonight with the frozen stuff but it's not as nice.

....is it so difficult to get hold of fresh, loose paneer? I would have thought there would have been enough demand to have it stocked in all the big supermarkets at least. The only place I've found it is Choitram by Safa Park which is not near where I live and it's out of stock most of the time I go there to get it. Another Dubai food mystery for me :)

Can't be as dangerous as the Fry's Turkish Delight biscuits I saw in Waitrose the other day. I held them for a minute then forced myself to put them back on the shelf - don't know how long that self control will last!

I would like to see the organisers punished. The volunteers working on the gate were given no briefing at all about dogs wearing muzzles. The organisers are 99% sure lying their comments today in the newspaper saying that the killer dog was muzzled when it entered. How on earth would they know??

Provided you are not going any further than the wajaja border post, you don't need it- officially you don't cross into oman. It's just a spray to get people to hand it over. Any chance you want a passenger? I'm a good guide, having done it a few times before :) edited by elle13211 on 05/02/2012 We don't need to go again till around March 6th so if you want to go at that time then post your email and I'll take note of it - a guide would be good!

Thanks so much for the directions, Akia. Good luck to everybody else also suffering with their landlords at the moment.

Akia, did you have to make an appointment to speak to RERA or just go in? where is the office? I don't even know where their office is and can get through to RERA but not the rent committe people on the phone. I really need to talk to somebody face to face as I'm another one having LL nightmares at the moment.

There was an article about camel racing in Time Out a few weeks ago, it may be worth searching their website for it.

Great to know something good came out of the dog show. I hope lots of the other K9 dogs who were there found loving homes too.

The reason these 'dangerous' dogs were let in is because nobody working on the gates was told anything about not letting them in. Two guys with 3 bull mastiffs between them were turned away late in the afternoon but this was after the little dog had been killed. The dog show has been running for years so I'm surprised the organisers don't have this all worked out. Either ban or muzzle big dogs or 'dangerous' dogs and have people patrolling the site making sure the muzzles are kept on. If they are not, owner and dog should be thrown out immediately. This would also require having people at the entrance who know one dog breed from another - not generally the case yesterday. My heart really goes out to the owners of the little dog which died. I know the police came so I hope the owner of the other dog is properly dealt with.

Very nice but not fancy and doesn't dserve alcohol but my favourite is Mezza House on Emaar Boulevard, opposite the Address Downtown. Fabulous Arabic food and as well as the usual offerings they do Syrian and Palistinian dishes too.

''Gosh SemiSaudi...how old are you if you dont mind? just wondering if i should do it as I am just 30 years old but have crows feet lines around my eyes... sounds like botox is for older people?! Sorry for my ignorance'' I don't think age matters (within reason). My friend started having it done when she was about 26 because she had quite deep lines around her mouth from smoking. I wouldn't have anything like that done in a salon, though. I'd only let a doctor stick needles in my face but that's my personal preference, I know lots of others don't mind and don't have any problems.

I have tried endlessly to get through to the DFWC and they have never answered the phone. I'm just glad I'm not a woman in distress in urgent need of help. It did say in their time out listing a while ago that they needed volunteers and I'm pretty sure I read in the newspaper some time back that they were starting a volunteer programme. Having tried for so long and got nowhere I've given up on them. I'm still very keen to become involved in voluntary work helping women so if find any useful info please post here.

I've spoken to RERA again today but couldn't get through to the rent commitee number (800 44 88), it's permanently engaged. I've not been able to get a satifactory answer from the other people at RERA I've spoken to and I really think it would be easier to talk to them face to face. Is it possible to just turn up to see them for advice? if so, can somebody give me address and directions? Thanks.

Chocs are you sure about the 12 months' notice bit? we got it put in our contract that we could move out by giving him 2 months notice but the contract doesn't mention how much he has to give us so I wondered if it would automatically be 2 months as well?

I'm going through this at the moment and phone RERA's rent committee last week for advice. I was told the LL couldn't not increase the rent and he had to give me notice in writing if he wanted me out but I couldn't understand from what the lady was saying how much notice he has to give in light of the fact my lease expires in mid February. It's worth giving them a call. Good luck!

Poop is poop. Another dog's is no more yucky than my own dog's - in fact it's usually dried out by the time I pick it up so actually less yucky.

I live in Downtown and thankfully rarely see poop on the streets here. My dog almost always poops in the same place that many dogs in our towers seem go, an area to the side of one tower. Most owners/maids must pick up as lots of dogs use it but there's not much poo there. That said, several times a week I pick up the poo left behind by others because I'm worried about Emaar banning dogs altogether because of a minority of inconsiderate owners/maids/kids etc.

The kind I have wouldn't slice, it's just in a dollop on the plate. I always have haggis for Christmas dinner and then I have it with roast potatoes and different vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and gravy (veggie haggis can be quite dry). You can have it with anything that would normally go with a (meat) roast dinner. Or even haggis and chips! I hope you enjoy it, I love it :)

I'll be having my own Burn's supper I think. Don't feel like taxi-ing around Dubai looking for haggis for DH so I'll have my veggie haggis, tatties and neeps and hubby will sort himself out - I'm sure he'll be relieved not to have haggis forced upon him!

Burj Khalifa to the metro is not far at all, maybe 5 minutes from leaving BK to getting to the station. I agree the Residences would be about 15 minutes, you can cut across Burj Park which is shorter than going down Emaar Boulevard.

Thanks for all the input ladies. Seems the law is on our side, I'll call RERA today. Our contract says it's renewable 'at the landlord's discretion' so not sure where that leaves us but hopefully I'll have a better idea after speaking to RERA. Good luck with yours rose, let us know how you get on with RERA.

Hope you don't mind me joining in, rose0284, I'm in a similar situation. Have been in the apartment for nearly a year and landlord wants (a) increase rent by 18% and (b) change from two cheques to one cheque. An agent told me yesterday that he can't legally raise the rent but there is nothing we can do if he now wants one cheque (which we can't/won't do). Thinking of just moving out and getting somewhere cheaper but we love our current apartment so would definitely consider staying if we could keep it at the same rent. I was worried if we went to RERA LL would just say he/a relative wanted to move in. Any thoughts/advice?

I saw it this time last year in Spinney's in Mercato. I've got a load in my freezer that I brought back from Scotland on my last visit. Will have a Burn's supper if I can get proper haggis for DH (mine is the delicious Macsweens veggie stuff).

gyms are open in ET............... Thanks, that's good news, the agent told me they weren't open (I've not viewed in ET yet). I need to have a look and find out how spacious they are and the size of the kitchens. We have a lot of stuff so need quite a bit of storage space.

For helping to look for something good in a situation: I will love the light for it shows me the way. Yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars. For reminding me to treat people well: Blowing out somebody else's candle does not make your own burn any brighter.

I'm looking for a 2 bed in Business Bay area and Exective Towers sounds good but the lack of gyms puts me off quite a bit. Now even more put off if white goods aren't provided - can anybody confirm this is actually the case now? an agent told me yesterday that the kitchens are all small, any ET ladies got an opinion on this? I don't drive so being so close to the metro would be really handy.

To be shorter. 5ft 11 and feel like a giant. Clothes shopping here a nightmare :( I'd swap heights with you if I could! I was going to write the one thing I'd like to do is add 4 or 5 inches to my height. I'm 5'6", would love to be tall.
