I had something that sounds similar about a month ago. I had a really high fever for 4 days but no cough, ear, throat, etc, just slept a lot (fortunately I got it over the weekend!). When the fever dropped I looked like I'd had a tanning accident, I was glowing with a pink rash from head to foot. I went to the doctor and, despite all sorts of test, the best guess was that it was an odd adult reaction to something like slapped cheek - she did a strep test which was negative. It took me a good week to get back to full strength once the fever cleared. Hope your wee one's feeling better soon.

Second night running in our house. Had to do it last night for grandmother's last night of holiday and then tonight for the day.

It can be hard if they're between deliveries but I start with Carrefour, Spinneys and Union Coop, then try Park n Shop or Choithrams. Good luck.

You could try the RAK animal shelter too, a friend of mine found a dog and RAK were prepared to take him. SamD, love it :) one of my muts gets car sick. He's better than he used to be and managed to wait until we were about 5 minutes from home the other day! I hate to think what'll happen if we have to ship him anywhere!

I've ordered from Boden without shop & ship and, although I've not had to return anything, when I've had any problems they've been really good and quick at sorting them out.

Is this like a mirage in the desert? We're so rain starved we're hearing things? :)

There was a smattering - mostly down the back of my neck - when I was walking on the beach this morning. My 4 year old wasn't happy, I made her change out of a white skirt (she's magnetically drawn to puddles), because it looked like rain. I love that in Dubai we usually get some rain over the major sporting events - Dubai 7s, golf, tennis and World Cup - each year! Just because it's not rained yet, doesn't mean it won't, the World Cup was flooded out in 97 or 98, and that's March.

I looked at the LWB Pajero when I changed my car a couple of years ago. The only thing that put me off was that the bench seat in the third row has a really low back so there's no support if you brake suddely or get hit from behind. My 7 year old (who is tall, admittedly) was in a friend's and said the seat only came up to the bottom of her shoulder blades.

The shop on Diyafah is called Murad and it's towards the Rydges end, on the same side as the Dune Centre.

They have them in Park n Shop on Al Wasl Road, on the wall at the end by the bakery. I assume P n S bring them in in bulk as they're in clear bags priced by the shop rather than a pot.

Can you not still renew the visa once at immigration? I've done it a couple of times in the past for my mother (British passport - if that makes a difference). It would be worth calling immigration to ask. It was something like Dhs.500 each but it extended the visa for another 30 days.

It is possible. My husband can't drive so we only have one car. He goes to work either with someone he works with who lives nearby, or on the bus - where we live and where he works aren't near the Metro. It's not the fastest way to get there but the buses are a viable alternative. The only problem, I would think, would be if your husband needs the car during the day for work.

Fairly big spots and it looks like the cloud's thicker coming towards us. Any other night I'd be delighted but we've got a school fund raiser outside tonight!

We have friends who moved into the Trade Centre Apartments around this time last year when they were waiting for their next villa to be ready. They're not the flashiest apartments but they do (or at least did last year), allow dogs. You could maybe try the Habtoor apartments behind the Metropolitan, I think they allow dogs.

I heard it too and we're near Diyafah Street. I assumed it was fireworks. I often hear low rumbling noises late at night, which I reckon must be coming from the dry docks. Don't get it during the day with all the traffic. Not a breath of wind down here and a clear sky. Hope we've not seen the last of the rain for the winter.

Good luck Claire. Both of our house cats got out on Christmas Day, we found out how but none of us had seen them go. The female was in the garden but the male was missing. We'd taken them in off the street but that was at our old house and they'd not been out here. The male is the bottom of the heap so I was really worried. I had been out calling every 10 minutes or so and had walked the streets but no sign. Just as I was going to call it a night, he reappeared! So relieved but I've pointed out to him that just because he did it once, he's not going to be going out again. A decent reward may turn something up. If your cat likes fish, or something else that's strong smelling, try taking that out with you too. Could she have got over a wall that she can't get back over - it happened when I was house sitting in Abu Dhabi. One of the cats went up a tree into the next compound but there was nothing on the other side so that he could get back. Fingers crossed for good news x

There's a fine line though. My daughter's now in Year 3 and I know that a couple of the classes when she was in Year 2 had problems with telling tales. She was not the type to tell tales but took from what they were told that you shouldn't go to the teachers if you had a problem - that was her interpretation and not what had been intended. Unfortunately, it meant that when she was being bullied, she wouldn't speak to her teacher. I've tried to clarify it by telling her that it's not telling tales when it directly affects you and that it really upsets you. I think MsHari's idea is good but children still need to know that they can talk to a teacher about what's going on.

Hi Livinia, I've not seen one, but the best place to try would be Arabian Home (opposite Rashid Hospital on Oud Metha road, the same building as RSA insurance). They sell all kinds of medical equipment. The closest I've seen was in Premaman, it was like a bean bag with a harness but I don't know if the angle would be steep enough. My second daughter had massive silent reflux - so I can appreciate what you're going through. She spent the first few months sleeping, wedged forward, in her infant car seat. I was concerned that it may damage her back, sitting all the time, but it's not had any lasting effects. Once she was stable enough (she was on meds), at about 5 months, we moved her to the carrycot of her Bugaboo Chameleon. We'd bought the Bugaboo as we had to watch her 24/7 and needed a buggy which faced us. The carrycot has 2 rods, which go in at either end, and by taking out the one at her head, I was able to wedge the end un and she slept in it. She kept sliding down but as we were watching her all the time, were able to move her up again through the night. She sorted the problem out herself though, by hooking her legs over the cover! Again, it wasn't perfect, but it was the best we could do and it's had no lasting effects. She was finally able to move into a cot at around 12 months and we wedged up the head end on books. She is now a happy healthy 4 year old! A bouncy chair that you can control the angle - available here - was what got us through too! Please shout if I can be of any help.

I go through this regularly at the moment with DD. I'm surprised by much of what her friends are watching and although she's asking to watch them I know, and she does too really, that it's not suitable and will scare her - she's always got very into what she watches and reads and it affects her. My line is that you can't unsee what you've seen or unread what you've read. It's better to wait than be scarred by something. My mother was taken to see Disney's Snow White when she was 3 and wouldn't go back into a cinema until she was at least 18! My other concern is that although many of her peers (Yr 3) have seen all the Harry Potter films, and others like them, they don't understand what they're watching and what they take away is muddled. They're children for such a short amount of time, I think they should enjoy it.

Yes, they're different. The ones from Spinneys aren't Scotch pancakes either though! As DubaiCat says, they're smaller and thicker but they're also not as sweet. I've got my Granny's recipe if you'd like it (dashing out now for the school run and afternoon activities). Maybe I should make some this afternoon for Burns night :)

Unfortunately not. It's probably just as well though, it would likely be cheaper to buy online even with the postage than it would be if it was in the shops here! You'll certainly see a lot of Boden on the children of Dubai.

Boden only has 2 shops and they're both in the UK but they do ship here. If the items are in stock, they're usually here within 10 days and Boden are very good if orders go astray. To save on postage I'd stock up before you come.

dubai71, you've not missed it, the only screening it's had here was at the Film Festival. I can't remember where I heard it but I think it's going to be released here either the beginning or the end of February. Having seen the movie, I can quite see why Colin Firth's winning all the awards, but it seems a great pity that Geoffrey Rush isn't picking up awards too.

I think I would lean towards CC over drama. It isn't a 'soft' option and, I would imagine, of more interest at university level than drama - if he's heading down an academic path rather than wanting to study drama in the future. If he enjoys history and English, then CC should be of interest - I remember studying ancient plays which weren't always as highbrow as Shakespeare as part of CC too. It doesn't hurt to take a minority subject either, it will stand out on an application whether it's for a job or for uni.

I did. I did Classics at GCSE and both Classics and Ancient History at A level and then read Ancient History at Uni. For many years these types of courses were seen as providing a rounded education and proved that you could learn - they weren't directly relevant to everyday life so it had to be learnt. This went out of favour as vocational courses became the vogue. Worryingly, I think, courses like history, geography and classics were dying out and being replaced by trendier subjects but I read the other day that many of these are now being recognised as 'softer' options and it looks like the education will be encouraged back towards traditional subjects. Unless it has changed dramatically, Classics should encompass some history and literature, and perhaps even some basic language and is an 'academic' option.

My DDs are just 8 and just 4. They both like Phineas & Ferb . DD2 likes Kipper, Ben & Holly, Winnie the Pooh and Charlie & Lola DD1 is into Dennis the Menace and the Beano, Just William, Famous Five, Swallows and Amazons, and Kim Possible. We don't really go in for merchandising but they both enjoy watching them and, in most cases, have the books.

We're loving the rain - the dogs aren't quite so taken but at least after 11 years, they've stopped barking at it! We're normally here all summer and only get out for a couple of weeks a year so the children have been making the most of the rain and dancing in the puddles :)

You could try calling Nad Al Shiba vets on Saturday morning. They deal with a lot of falcons and may know if one's missing but it could have gone a long way between now and Saturday.

I could, and was until for the third night in a row, I was woken by one of the children at 2 and then kept awake by them and the animals until I admitted defeat at 5! My mother is awake through most of the night and has been for years. She listens to podcasts or talking books so she's still in bed. If they're ones you don't have to concentrate on, it doesn't matter whether you doze off but it gives you something for when you're awake. She's always said that if she gets up she feels worse in the morning.

Thank you all. We're going to have to go with one that's available here so it looks like it'll be the Maxi Cosi. Sals B, sorry, I didn't mean to worry anyone, hope you have a great time with them. My DD1 was in a high back booster from 3 and was fine.

Thanks all. I think it'll have to be a high back booster but I've read that a child's body isn't developed enough to cope with an impact with just the adult seatbelt across a booster until they're at least 5.

Did you see this one here? http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3980774 We bought it in the US because it would last us (hopefully) until DD was out of the final booster chair stage. It is 5 point now and will last until 45kg. It doesn't seem to get too hot for us in the Summer here. Thank you, that's the one I was looking at in Babyshop but they've only brought in one option here which is brown and a kind of velvety fabric. I'll go back and have another look at it.
