[ BTW are you the original CheekyB who went to Doha? if so and you are now back in Dubai maybe we could restart our Tuesday coffee meet-up? Regards Jo I am indeed but I'm working full time so won't be able to meet during the week. :( Wish I could though! Will have to be a lunch time coffee then, unless your work location is Jebel Ali where "ladies who lunch" are a bit thin on the ground

Hi You need to get to Murjan section (near Ritz Carlton) and the Music Institute is on Plaza level next to Murjan 1 tower. There is a small map on the website and a phone number http://www.themusic-uae.com/ Regards Jo

Don't do Facebook BUT my current on-line addiction is Backgammon. My hubby will be happy if I move onto something else as the best version of online Backgammon is on his lap-top with Windows 7. The earlier versions are not worth bothering about.

Recently played and enjoyed my first ever game in the Club Lounge at Muscat Crowne Plaza. They had a very fancy board which swivelled (sp) round on some sort of rollers. Does any-one know where I could buy a board etc in Dubai maybe just a starter one in case the novelty wears off! Thanks Jo

Carpenters only LP with any value is listed in Rare Record Price Guide at........12GBP Ticket to Ride must be mint/excellent condition and same for sleeve. By comparison anything by Elvis will be worth a lot more eg 500-600 pounds for a EP and Beatles could be the same. If you want to list any other titles/artists I could check out the guide price. Regards Jo

If you ever need to do a "visa exchange run" & have accumulated airmiles they could be used for this. Just book at least 8 days ahead, for a same day return flight eg Dxb/Doha for 37000 miles + 145dhs tax. This is for an EK flight which normally costs 3000+ and.... if you are a Skywards member you will get tier miles & bonus skywards miles...and full duty free allowance. Most flights have a 1or 1.25 hour turnaround so should be do-able OR if you have Exec. Lounge access & a couple hours to spare you can have a 3 hour stopover there to relax, read enjoy a snack & glass of wine etc......

Hi J As Dentro said best to decide when you get there. It depends on where you get parked & what you fancy!! Some places get v. busy at weekends and u have to queue up with your name on a list even for Paul Cafe Why???. We live at the Ritz Carlton end - Murjan, & must say whilst the Noodle Room is OK it is not on the Walk at all and the only buzzy atmosphere comes from the Valet parking imo. We really like Thyme in Al Fattan Tower next to Mai Tai. It feels quite Mediterranean and has live music most nights. It also serves b**r & w**e if you enjoy that but without the dull "hotel" environment. Another favourite if you enjoy a meat feast is Butchers Shop & Grill right opposte the big open air car park but it also gets very busy. I've seen them sending people away at - 8.30/9pm. so you need to go there early. Sun-set is around 6.00pm & that is a good time usually mid week but tonight ????

Thanks Dentro for the heads up. - would never have thought of putting a picture:\: but if it gets you noticed!! I would usually send a covering letter in the UK in perfect English of couse to point out the "highlights" of my CV & those skills particularly appropriate to this position. I also phone up first so that I know the name & designation of the person I will be directing it to. I am used to & more comfortable with the face-to-face approach. Maybe I should leave the photo so that I stand a chance of getting a foot in the door!

Yes that's what I thought you would say! So.... to try to answer your question it really is up to you I think. It sounds as if you have not been there very long and are still finding your feet. If you don't have to rush off at the end of the day why not try being around a bit longer just once or twice to see what time people drift off to home and family life? It may be of course that they do not have a life outside of the office lol:( . Why not try to hang around a bit on Thursday and see if any one suggests a coffee or something? Unless of course the w/end is when the place is empty after 4.00pm!

It depends...... why are they staying late at work? If they have a dead-line to meet and you are able to assist it might be appreciated or it may be for other "social" reasons unconnected with work.....

Let us know how you get on. Wish we were able to buy more just now, I love buying property & getting it all smartened up ready to rent out. Then we let the agents take over and never see it again for a few years!!

Hi Xia Take a look at Paragon Mortgages - biggest Buy to Let lender in the UK and have HQ in BIRMINGHAM. We have several properties in UK (not Birmingham) which have been financed by Paragon for many years. Rates now are very low & linked to LIBOR. In my opinion it is a good time to buy in certain parts of the UK BUT only if you know your chosen area very well. Good luck Jo

Hi Jane Have just arrived in Bahrain for 5 days & staying at Marriott Exec. Apartments. We have a 1 bedroom suite & its huge with a full kitchen fridge/freezer wash. machine dishwasher TV DVD/CDsystem etc. also great views over the water. I think it is quite new so everywhere is spotless. Although it is called apartments they also have full hotel facilities. Hope this helps. Jo Oh... just to add small downside for us (depraved westerners?) no bar or alco... in restaurant. edited by Jodel on 04/02/2011 edited by Jodel on 04/02/2011

Pets are not allowed at JBR BY LAW of Dubai Municipality - see previous threads. ps I think goldfish are OK Do you mean that by law the dogs are not allowed on the actual beach (which I know they aren't)...or in JBR the area? Is it really against the MUNICIPAL LAW to have dogs in the area? Sorry I was not clear I meant in the towers as in Jumeirah Beach Residence. The notices are INSIDE of each tower at the ground floor and at Plaza level. Don't know for certain about the beach itself but I think I have seen Municipality notices on other beaches. Just to add ... like a lot of the "laws" in Dubai it seems no action is taken UNTIL some-one complains.

Good morning Sholay I have very recent experience of living (but not working) in both places. Vancouver in Canada & Noosa Australia. Weatherwise I preferred Noosa as it is an OK all year round climate it seems to me. With Vancouver the huge amount of rain from October to April was very depressing for me but summers there are great!! The best situation for us (not having to work or with kids) is to have summers in Canada May to October & winters in Australia Nov-April which is of course their summer.

Just to add - Parking 1 is residents only. Visitors need to use the Retail Parking. Just drive along the front of JBR Murjan section ie do not turn into the service road but turn right at the traffic lights ( Fish& Chip shop/Avis) the parking is signed from there up to M level. Please note if you are coming this evening in 2 or 3 hours it will be chokka on that road!!

I really don't know either ?? We went armed with lots of cash as we were technically 1 day late as well - 30 days from 4th December is 3rd Jan ( I think ) but the ladies in Dubai DNRD told me we had until 8th or 9th jan ie 10 days grace period but I didn't want to wait any longer as the lady said it was a 50dhs fine for each day of an overstay. Am beginning to think they make it up as they go along....

Hi Advice---- My trip on 4th Jan was my first ever but had no problem with hubby in tow, both born in UK & with British passports so I don't know why we were singled out for this "special treatment" - Thanks. The only thing I can think of is we don't have a "visa" as such - just a UAE entry stamp for 30 days from Al Ain border on Dec 4th..??

Must have changed since I did this on 4th Jan?? No charges or no need to drive to Oman if you just need an exit stamp & a new entry stamp for 30 days. Why do you have to drive into Oman??

Hi DP If you go to Hatta you are not "technically" going into Oman (unless you want to of course) You just get an exit stamp in p/port to leave Dubai walk/drive across the road & get an entry stamp back into Dubai. Thats all there is to it! PS we have British passport so do not know if it is the same for others?? Good luck - Jo

Thats about it. Can you believe I was told this by the very helpful ladies at Al Jafiliya Visa office!! They said its OK every-one does it! If you go mid-week it is less busy, don't forget to have your own passport as well as everyone in the car as there are 2 or 3 police check points as you approach the border. Do not be alarmed as the guards also have machine guns slung around their necks. It will seem a bit 3rd world at first but you just get used to it. When you get stamped out at the hut on the RHS you can either walk across the road or drive to the entry point (2 mins)this is to get to another bigger hut - like a porta cabin. You go into the office on the LHS corner up a few steps. They will also give you a bit of paper with a stamp on for you to give to the man in the cabin on the way out when he asks for "small paper" I think this may be for the car but who knows?? This country seems to function on small bits of paper!! Call me if you want verbal reassurance - Jo

Yes Noddy you can do that; I think the cost is 600 each for another 30 days. Another way is to drive to the border post at Hatta get an exit stamp out of Dubai, then walk to the customs point on the other side of the road and get entry stamp in for another 30 days. Best thing is no charge for British Passport!! Good Luck Jo
