Just been catching up with EW forum and saw your post about Indego brunch. Have been once, a month ago and on a Saturday Everything was excellent - service, decor but most of all the "fine dining" quality of the food. All served to you and seconds/thirds generously offered by the well trained staff. Good quality Indian beverages were also topped up frequently. Have booked again for this Friday so may see you there???

I have used Thrifty for about 4 years - 2/3 days every 2 weeks or so. The price is excellent @ 80dhs per day if you can drive manual cars or 100 / day if you need auto.

Hi Pink sushi Don't forget you will need valid residence visa to apply for a private P O box. So do get this sorted BEFORE CHANGING JOBS as you may have a problem with "overlap" Hope this helps Jo.

Had my Dubai (red card) licence since October 2007. On annual renewal in October 2012 the reference to Dubai Police on the red card front and back was "crossed out" in black magic marker pen. I was told that was because the Police are no longer connected with it. I have also noticed recently that much stricter control is in place to not allowing "over limit" purchases.

Just be a bit careful at the Airport..... We do regular visa runs to Hatta after 37/38 days never a problem. About 6 months ago went through Dubai Airport to go to Singapore after 32 days in Dubai and the female had to ask her male colleague if it was OK with our (UK) Passports. He just waived us through but I now plan my Hatta visits to make sure I am less than 30 days if going by air. The visa run is getting more & more straightforward now and the cost is only 50dhs

You will qualify also if you have any mortgage or securred lending commitments of I think around 250k in GBP. in the country where you have your "home" account. We have that in the UK and have always qualified this way. They did a few years ago send out a notification that you could pay a monthly fee for the "premier" level if you ceased to qualify in balance terms

I was just going to add that Alismum! When I have my roots colour I always say "just quick dry" and they are fine with that. If it was somewhere they didn't know me I would just say I'm going to the pool when I get home and that is also fine.

When I tried to renew mine in March I was told - no longer required. Every one can visit the GP for a fee of 150 dhs. With my health card (cost 310 dhs) a visit to Umm Suqueim Clinic Dr Amna was 40 dhs.So if you don't go more than twice a year it's cheaper edited by Jodel on 05/02/2013

You didn't say which visa DH has. If it is a UAE visa he will still need to pay an "entry fee" to "visit" Oman. This is what you pay when you do a Visa Run. The 50dhs fee is paid to enter Oman. You will prob. know by now if hubbies Residence Visa also covers other GCC countries but you will be in the know for next month ....

"Visa" cost at the Hatta border control is now just 50 dhs if your passport is from the 33 approved countries. The charge is not for a full residence visa just an entry stamp in your passport which allows you to stay in UAE for 30 days. Hope that helps Jo

Have needed to buy this for DH for the last 3 years, As Di said it is just the long-life packs out here but these are imported from the UK company Delamere. Up until about 9 months ago it was full-fat only in a blue and white pack but recently a semi-skimmed option has been available - green & white pack. I can get it at Lulu or Spinneys and price varies quite a bit. Just now it is 12.50 for a pack in Spinneys but has been as low as 9.50. I once saw it in Al Maya - small convenience stores - for 36.75 but I think it just sat around on the shelves then passed expiry date (3 months or so) was probably thrown away. I buy 6 packs per month and keep it in the fridge Hope this helps Jo.

For those who don't know, cash converters is an Australian pawn shop. In the UK these shops are frequently used by construction workers to get cash for the cheque they have been given for wages. The 6% they are charged is a small price to pay for those who do not have (or don't want to use) a bank account. Somehow I cannot see this happening at the SZR branch ....lol

Yes the small one to the left as you are exiting Arrivals. So you will be able to exchange them when you arrive BACK into Dubai T3 NB they will only take the 1 Euro and 2 Euro coins not the bits & pieces of small change. HTH Jo.

I have exchanged 1 Euro coins very recently at the smallish currency exchange next to Dubai Duty Free in T3. They told me it was only allowed at this counter. They will most likely accept the "larger" coins of other most popular currency as well...... Still need to wait for your next return through the Airport

Hi Abi I have done this a few times with FlyDubai to Doha (Qatar) and Muscat (Oman with Emirates. What you need to consider is the turn around time in Muscat or Doha. FlyDubai used to be great for Doha as you could just fly in (40 minutes flight) come back 1 hour later on the same plane. That has all changed now as the timings don't work out. With Doha it is now a minimum 3 hours wait. I think Muscat is even worse unless you can manage an overnight.....Muscat is good for that as they have some good hotels and places to see. Another thing to consider is the cost of entry visa to Oman and Qatar. Oman is the best as it has recently been reduced from 200 to 50 dhs. Qatar is 100 dhs but if you get both boarding passes when you check in you just stay on the bus and do not "technically" enter the country so do not pay a visa fee. Have also done the drive to Hatta and price is still 50 at the border to go into Oman.

So... say average 60k dhs for 30 days = 2000 per day In some less expensive parts of the UK this 2000 dhs (350 GBP) would get a "2+1 gang" i.e. 2 tradesmen and 1 labourer. Now I know in Dubai it is usually 1 + 5 or 6 assistants/bag carriers! lol and the labour cost is much less but I hope you can now do some calcs. based on the above Jo. PS Our in house maintenance service charges 450 dhs per day for each tradesmen(mason/electrician etc)

would you know how much these 2 things would approx cost? the guys we have spoken to so fat are quoting us 50 to 70k dhs? is this a reasonable price? You need a proper quotation for a job of this size not just a price. ALSO ask for the number of days it will take and the number of tradesmen. Then you can work out approx. how much they are charging per day to get comparisons. These sort of works are usually priced in this way for the labour costs. Any plant used and materials are of course added on as well

Not usually. Unless different carrier. You will only be in a transit lounge - unless you have more that 4-5 hours and have booked accommodation. Make sure when you check in that your bags are "checked right through to xxxxx(US airport)"

you are often not allowed to put up traffic signs on your own. If it is outside your villa you may get fined. You will need to get a permit (or NOC) from the RTA Service Centre at Umm Ramool which is just opposite Emirates HQ Metro station. Open 8.00 till 2.00pm Sun-Thursday It is fully staffed by locals who all speak excellent English and are very helpful They may need to see a sketch of what you want to do with sizes etc. Also if you do not own the villa you will need to OK it with your Landlord or the Agent. Just shout if more help is needed. - Jo.

Hi We had a camper when we lived in the UK and as it was many years ago finding a site was not easy. Now with the internet it's really straight forward. Just been looking at http://www.wildhorizon.co.uk/ which is great as it gives prices etc but best thing is a link to http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/ With that you can find sites by typing in a general area say Bournemouth or New Forest then fine tune by adding Motor home/ Hard standing/ electric hook-up etc and it will give details and reviews of all sites within those requirements. Just one small down side - price of petrol in the UK - great feature the other day in the National, cheapest fuel in the world is Venezuela.(0.18dhs) and Saudi (.48dhs) UK is 8.45 dhs per litre. If your user name is any indication you might not be surprised in the UK as the most expensive is........ Turkey at (9.78) and Norway (9.85)

We are staying in the Dubai Marina area. I also live in the Marina and we are really spoiled for choice in this area with great restaurants many within a short walking distance from home. Depending on the time you are travelling, taxis in Dubai are not usually a quick way of getting around Dubai but you will have no problems getting taxis in the Marina area because of all the above mentioned hotels and restaurants.

Hi Most well known hotels will have a rank or taxis passing nearby. Hailing on the street is also the norm here. Re taxis from malls, some of the well established are linked directly to the Metro eg Bur Juman, Mall of Emirates, Ibn Battuta all have their own Metro Stations. You will only need a taxi if you are loaded down with shopping...... Where about's in Dubai will you be for this weeks visit? Jo

Hi Tigerlily If you enjoy Indian food you must visit Coriander Restaurant when you are in Al Ain. It is in Bawadi Mall but is quite upmarket and not at all the standard of place usually associated with mall dining. I have just looked at the full menu as a reminder - (coriander.ae ) and am now feeling ravenous.!! Also reasonable prices Check it out as another place to eat during your stay I'm sure you will enjoy it PS - are you celebrating as you have reached 100 posts - congrats.! Plenty of undercover parking on M(ezzanine) level. Entry is from the road in between Murjan & Sadaf sections. If you come into JBR from Habtoor/Grosvenor House end (Murjan) turn right at Fish & Chips room/ Al Ansari Exchange. It is signed from there on Right hand side up ramp. Hope this helps Jo

On the "backside" it just has a list of codes like the old UK paper licence eg 1= motorcycle 2= handicap. car etc Under my name on the front of the licence it has 3 which is "light vehicle" as per the code list - nothing about auto or manual ??? If you need the Visa/Immigration Dept , you need to be at Building No. 8 in Knowledge Village. It has a big car park next to it but the office gets very busy so best to arrive asap after 8.00am and take a book. If you mean Emirates ID I don't know if this is up and running yet at this location.

Yes of course you are correct Bella - it is only the outside that is a bit dull. I think in Dubai we are so used to seeing all the really showy exteriors that is what we have come to expect every where else. I also love Singapore as we have visited several times over the years. Just remembered Royal on Scotts - across the street from Hilton - another place we enjoyed our stay.

The mall next to the Conrad has a good food court with cheap eats! I think it's called the Marina Mall. Stayed recently at the Mandarin Oriental where the breakfast was the best I've had anywhere. It's spread over 3 different rooms and is enough to keep you going for the whole day. At the other end of the scale DH was amused to be able to have a can of Tiger beer with his snack in that food court. Found some great restaurants in Singapore this time and was also a great article on Singapore eating out in The National - travel section yesterday
