Hi, there! Hope we'll get to keep our thread and it will still be here after the maintenance break... You've been a lovely bunch to exercise with. ;) Day 19: 40+5 40 min brisk walk w/ occasional runs on treadmill 5 min abs Hope to see you on Sunday, or latest Monday night! :) ETA touch-up <em>edited by jophiel on 21/07/2011</em>

Hello, Ladies! exile, seems you're really getting into it. :) fairytale, your new routine is challenging, wow. Will pick up some inspiration a little later. Thanks for this advice on the heartrates. I'm still not sure I understand it though. You're welcome! Here's a little something, if you're still interested. Just enter your age and resting heart rate (HRrest) and you'll get an idea of your zones. http://www.briancalkins.com/HeartRate.htm Today, I was applying the KISS principle ("keep it short and simple"). The good old travel fever is heating up with all the planning/packing/organizing, yet, what better way to relieve the stress and anxiety than exercise. Still, I was feeling a bit exhausted, so had to be a little softer than usual. So, hit the gym. Day 18: 35+10 35 min brisk walk on treadmill (not in the mood of running at all), inclination at 4-5 10 min nonstop classic abs (crunches) on the floor 3-4 min stretching on the plate A to Day 19, hitting the gym might still be the easiest option at the moment. See you tom! :)

it's not actually the banks who fill the ATMs with money - but a security firm..... It was probably an error and all ATMS have cameras so they will be able to look at the footage. The only bank that can actually register a complaint is the bank that you bank with - hence why Emirates NBD couldn't do anything. That's correct. First time for everything... ;)

Hello, Ladies! Oh, that water workout is fun, fairytale. Thanks for introducing it to the rest of us! So. Time to take a look at…. Day 17: 35+5 5 min on treadclimber, treadles at max 30 min on treadmill, inclination at 4; brisk walk, occasional runs, one sprint 5 min nonstop sprinter's abs Stretching on the plate. Was in the mood of listening to something really sweet, enjoyable and lovely, so topped up my iPod and hit the gym. It felt good to work up a sweat to a music that touched my soul… Did not feel I was doing anything physical at all. :) On my Day 18, would like to repeat that . See you tom!

Hello, lovely ladies! So, my first day of the second half of this brilliant challenge. And the pool it was! Day 16: 35 Full-body water workout. Yay! Did as many extra reps as my limited time allowed. I've never taken hydrobics in my life, only had occasional aquajogging sessions. I'm totally enamored with this workout. The dips done this way seem to work better for me than the regular pushups, and for the first time during this challenge, I have had sore chest muscles. I actually hate pushups and always seem to end up getting frustrated with them , but the dips in this workout are something else. Plan to hit the gym for Day 17. See you tom! :)

I had root canal treatment done at the dentist in motor city (btw he didnt tell me thats what he was doing, i thought he was just giving me a filling!!) and it cost nearly 4000dhs!!!! the worst part is its not even finished.... he wants me to come back and get the "tooth rebuilt" - that will be the day!!! Oh, wow. DH is now sporting 4 new crowns and 2 root canals as well. Thought he would have just a couple fillings, as his dentist back home said everything was perfectly fine last fall. He did have a tooth ache early this spring, thus the need to see a "local" dentist (an expat as well). Hmm. The last root canal is half-way done. And will remain that way for a while. He just needed to have a break, as the constant need to see a dentist was getting a bit too intense. Probably running a dental clinic isn't that inexpensive, either. Yet once burned, twice... yep ring him up and ask all details and tell him what u need/want just click on the search button and get his details. Thanks! Will do. :)

Does anyone know the ball park figure for a crown? My DH has been told over 3k and that seems incredibly steep to me... Yeah, DH went to Umm Suqeim 2 some months ago and it was 3,350 Dhs/porcelain crown (regular design, inclusive of temporary crown). I'd say incredibly steep is about right. Ladies who went to Dr. Madhu's clinic, is it for sure his porcelain crowns are exactly the same quality? How did you sort that out?

Here's something more that exercise guide Paige Waehner has written on optimal exercise intensity. I found it both informative and entertaining. ;) Perceived Exertion Scale When exercising, it's important to monitor your intensity to make sure you're working at a pace that is challenging enough to help you reach your goals, but not so hard that you blow a lung. One way to do that is to use a Perceived Exertion Scale. The standard is the Borg Scale of Perceived Exertion, which ranges from 0-20. Because I'm a math-idiot, I made up my own scale (see below) that's a little easier to remember. In general, for most workouts you want to be at around Level 5-6. If you're doing interval training, you want your recovery to be around a 4-5 and your intensity blasts to be at around 8-9. As you'll see below, working at a level 10 isn't recommended for most workouts. For longer, slower workouts, keep your PE at Level 5 or lower. Level 1: I'm watching TV and eating bon bons Level 2: I'm comfortable and could maintain this pace all day long Level 3: I'm still comfortable, but am breathing a bit harder Level 4: I'm sweating a little, but feel good and can carry on a conversation effortlessly Level 5: I'm just above comfortable, am sweating more and can still talk easily Level 6: I can still talk, but am slightly breathless Level 7: I can still talk, but I don't really want to. I'm sweating like a *** Level 8: I can grunt in response to your questions and can only keep this pace for a short time period Level 9: I am probably going to die Level 10: I am dead

Hi, exile! Power-walks - what a brilliant idea. How does one do them discreetly (malls, airports)? I'd like to learn to do them! Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your collapse. :( Did you let your personal trainer know about it? Would it be possible for you to consult your doctor, just to make sure there is not anything that might need to be taken into consideration when outlining a full diet and exercise plan? Or would that be going overboard, what do you think? Are you happy with your present exercise and weight-loss regime - are you sure it is not too burdening for your body (and overall condition, all things considered) ? Have you been seeing a dietician or is your personal trainer qualified to outline a diet plan for you as well? Personally, I would not be able to beat myself into an exercise and weight-loss regime that requires me to treat the body too harshly. I fail to see how that would be required to stay healthy. However, finding out one's own training zone might be a bit tricky… And I'm still experimenting with that myself. Here's little something I found, based on setting the target heart rate zone. http://exercise.about.com/od/cardioworkouts/f/targetheartrate.htm And some more. Below is an example of the Karvonen formula for a 23 year old person with a resting heart rate of 65 beats per minute (*to get your resting heart rate, take your pulse for one full minute when you first wake up in the morning or after you've resting for a while). This formula also includes an updated calculation of maximum heart rate (the previous formula was 220 - age, which has now been shown to be inaccurate): 206.9 - (0.67 x 23 (age)) = 191 191 - 65 (resting heart rate) = 126 126 * 65% (low end of heart rate zone) OR 85% (high end) = 82 OR 107 82 + 65 (resting heart rate) = 147 107 + 65 (rhr) = 172 The target heart rate zone for this person would be 147 to 172 Just an idea, where to start. But I'm no expert, whereas fairytale is. Maybe she'd like to comment? In any case, you probably should seek some professional advice. I just got alarmed, you could have hurt yourself. Day 15: 30 Full-body water workout! Love it. As to tom, let's see if third time's a charm (and I find myself in the pool again). ;)

Hello, ladies! Got inspired by fairytale's water workout the other day and did it now myself. It took 35 min. I think. Got so carried away, that forgot to measure the total time. Here's a vid showing how to do it: http://youtu.be/cvQ5LqJk7pc Egg beater 1 Minute. Rest 30 seconds; repeat. Stair star Do 8 reps. Water taxi 1 Minute. Rest 30 seconds; repeat. Toe touch Do 8 reps. Kickboard climb 1 Minute. Rest 30 seconds; repeat. Surf's up Do 8 reps. Mogul jumps Do three sets of 12 reps per leg. Deck dip Do 10 reps. Day 14: 35 This total body water workout was FAB! Just loved it - and so did my joints and muscles. Exactly what my sore bod needed. Will repeat it tom! :)

Hello, fellow 30-DFCers! Hi there, exile and fairytale! Running at 9.6 km/h (5.97 mph) for 10 min sounds like a fun goal. Lovely to have you join us, exile! :) Okay. Have 17 more days to go of this particular challenge at the moment. Ambitious enough of a goal to work out that 30 minutes of daily exercise... So far so good. Day 13: 41+5 Breakdown: 1 min teaser skippity skip 30 min brisk walk on treadmill 10 min at max treadles on treadclimber 5 min sprinter's abs on the floor Finishing off with stretching on the plate. Thought I would never make even 1 min of the sprinter's abs, but after 2 min I overcame a mental treshold (or was it physical, go figure) and the rest was... Almost easy. :) Have got sore front thighs from previous days' sprinter's abs (?!), hmmm. Shouldn't the soreness rather be in my abs? Probably some issues with my technique... Or just lack of practice. But overall, feel fabulous. Toned, even. ;) Let's keep up the good work, ladies!

Dnata SZR: One escalator ride up from the main entrance, a separate room for E-gate counter is behind one's back (there was a sign put up as well, an A4 printout). Let us know if it actually works. Good news, Emirates ID cardholders! DH and I had the E-gate service added to our cards today, swiftly and smoothly so. Were attended by a lovely, fabulously efficient Emirati lady at the Dnata SZR Egate counter… They had the cashier in the same room, so got everything sorted in one go (2 x AED 170). The chips should be perfectly fine to be popped into the egate reader at the gate. Says theory. Ladies I went to the one at Dnata and the system was down today. Hi, Marti! Got the same problem confirmed by Dnata! What I still don't know is whether this is true in all of their branches - or just SZR. Okayyy. Naturalization Department, here we come. Jebel Ali Port, or, Burj Dubai Police Station - help. Anything in between those options? Good news is, that I was quoted AED 220 this time (card/person). Not AED 300, anyway. Loopy Lotti, thank you for sharing! Smugly bypassing the queues, weren't you. ;) Oh no. Will be travelling with two passports as well - visa still valid in the otherwise old and annulled one. So let's see. Did not change the emirate, though. Might help? Once I get the AED 100 price difference sorted, seems the actual card acquisition is quite straight-forward a process.

I just got mine on Thursday so hopefully this info will be recent enough and help someone. I went to the DNATA on Sheik Zayed Rd near the Metropolitan Hotel. Easily parked on the street. Walked in main door and took escalator to first floor. There is a room called EGate kind if behind you as you ge off the escalator. I handed the lady a passport photo and my passport with a valid UAE residency stamp in it (issued in Ahu Dhabi if that helps anyone... ). She handed me back a form in Arabic and told me to go downstairs to the cashier right at th back on the building on the right hand side and pay 200aed. He gave me a receipt I took this back upstairs to the same lady who passed me my brand new Egate card complete with photo. The whole process took less than 10 minutes including me getting lost and asking for directions several times in the buidling. Easy peasy lemon squeezey! Great, thank you! Oh, you too were given the AED 200 option. Perplexing. Here's what we were told by Dnata, otherwise in a very clear and precise manner, of which I am very grateful for. [i'>Please find below the documents required to apply for the e-Gate card. 1 Original Passport 2 One passport size photograph 3 [b'>AED 300.00[/b'>[/i'> On the Government pages, however, it reads as follows. [i'>Criteria and Documents for eGate Card New eGate card holder’s presence Original passport (with at least 6 month’s validity). You must be either a UAE citizen or an expatriate holding a resident visa. Passport photograph Procedure and Fee Submit documents and do a finger-print ID. This procedure takes only about 5-10 minutes. [b'>Pay AED 200 per card.[/b'>[/i'> Go figure. But it's been a great thread! And very helpful. This scheme is such a winner! :) Tell myself "Gym Time!", and the mind goes blank. Take advantage of that, get ready, hit the gym. Once there, the body switches on autopilot. Yayy! I just give it gentle suggestions, and off we go. Yet, with Mr Paffen the Sports Rope it definitely is not love at first sight, no story there yet. All I was able to give him was a feeble 2x32 seconds. Which brings us to Day 9: 30+15 (cardio+muscle work) Brisk walk on treadmill, with a couple of runs/jogs. Arms/chest on the plate, abs on the floor. TBH, rewarded myself with some E! "Dance Scene" time (rerun, as it is not Wednesday yet), while completing the abs. So, it was a bit later than usual for my dose of 30-DFC today. Overall, feel so good. Better every day! ETA touch-ups <em>edited by jophiel on 12/07/2011</em>

Was it Dnata Travel Centre building at Sheikh Zayed Road, and, was it recently? We're not using any other service of theirs, wonder if that might reflect on the price... I just went for e-gate the other day, it is the service road after Metroplex Cinema (Metropolitan) on SZ Rd driving into Dubai. 2 buildings before the gas station. Btw it is also possible to get e-gate card without residence visa, but once you get your residence visa you need to get a new egate card so u would pay the lot again. Hi, Rebe! Did you pay AED 200 for this service? Or is it depending on which service provider one uses ([i'>Naturalization Departmen[/i'>t or [i'>DNATA[/i'>)? Haven't heard of doing it that way. Are the e-gate machines set up for it? :) Yeah, should be possible (in theory). http://www.emiratesid.ae/en/e-gate.aspx Am curious about it too! Would love to hear how it has been to use it at the airport and if it has been properly introduced as a praxis. Then QUICKLY back to reality, and: 45+10 (or 15, lost count at one point, struggling with some push-ups/dips on the plate). Cardio + muscle workout; meeelloww walk on treadmill (HR at Heart Healthy, speed at 6, inclination 4; a 15- second sprint at 14.4 in the end); arms/back/chest on the plate; abs on the floor. Cardio, muscles, stretching - brisk walk w/ occasional sprints on treadmill for 30 min; dead lifts with dumbbells, squat 'n kicks, and, a short arm workout routine for arms/upper back for 10 min; stretching for 5 min; and, just before showering, abs for 5 min (just 'cause it's fun). I know it sounds like a bit too much muscle work to be squeezed into mere 10 min, but am just experimenting with them still. Finding my balance while doing the dead lifts is, well, work in progress. ;)

A thread seems to have disappeared. This one's for those who are in the 30-Day Fitness Challenge. Probably not a good idea to enhance/create traffic for any one particular blog or site via EW, so let's do this right this time. Hope you'll be back, fairytale and others! :)

I was wondering if you can use the entertainer vouchers alongside the UAE residential rate? Hi, Worldgirl. It's either or. Spent a lovely day there a couple of weeks ago. Was wearing a UV stinger suit, though. Sun is pretty intense, but the water is nice and cool. :) Do we get 60dhs off the normal rate as a resident!!!! it would work out cheaper using the vouchers wouldnt it. You're right, salsB. It's cheaper with the vouchers. http://www.atlantisthepalm.com/marineandwaterpark/aquaventure/pricesandrules.aspx <em>edited by jophiel on 18/11/2011</em>

Thank you, marycatherine! Will file the report with the bank that owns that ATM, then (tried to do that yesterday already, but the bank would not accept it - maybe now after our bank has been informed they will be more receptive?).

Thank you for your insight and well-wishes, DubaiCat! The loss may not be big in money, but it does seem considerable in[i'> trust[/i'>. Anyway, it functioned as fair warning. Maybe the ATM was a bit too remote to be used safely? Will only use the ones we are accustomed to from now on.

We had our Corporate PRO do this for us. But would any of this be helpful? [i'>The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in Bur Dubai in the Bastakiya area, near the Omani and Jordanian consulates.[/i'> http://yp.theemiratesnetwork.com/biz/United_Arab_Emirates/Dubai/Ministry_of_Foreign_Affairs_24457.html

My favorite is Chanel Teint Innocence (Naturally Luminous Compact). Can't really decide whether it is a foundation or a concealer, but it seems to serve its purpose. [i'>ETA [/i'> That romance was short-lived. Pleasant to use, but somehow not as complimentary or becoming as my longtime favorite, Guerlain Parure Gold. So back to that. Wanted to try out Bare Escentuals, but seem to be unable to find them anywhere in Dubai. Did someone buy them here? My hopes were up for skipping the powder phase, but oh well. On second thought, it is kind of fun to play with the brushes anyway... <em>edited by jophiel on 12/04/2011</em>
