Have just come back from UK where our friends teenagers had a bank account with a HSBC debit card each. Parents pay in their monthly allowance and they have zero overdraft facility. Just wondering if there is something similar in Dubai ?

Many thanks Mumto2. Were you listed as her sponsor ? Our friends are staying with us, not in a hotel, so apparently we have to be their sponsors. If they were staying in a hotel, the hotel could apply for a visa or if they were flying emirates then they could get a visa through emirates. But as they are doing neither of those we have to be their sponsors. Just wondering if anyone has done it from the Dubai side ? I've looked at the DNRD website and there is a lot of paperwork involved if we apply from this side, and probably a lot of queuing to get it processed. Just trying to avoid the headache if possible !

Many thanks Sandy Dogg. I had found the link to the embassy in Ottawa, and they are quoting something like 250 canadian dollars - which sounds a lot ! I wondered if it would be easier and cheaper for us to do it from here, as we will be acting as their sponsors ? Interested to hear what your DH says.

We had exactly the same problem with first class agency last year! We found a lovely villa in barsha, the owner accepted our offer and after a week of hanging on the agent told us the owner had accepted a higher offer. Sounds very similar to your situation. I would say avoid first class, there are other very good agencies out there. We found our villa in the end through twinnetts, but if you are looking in springs then we have used allsop and allsop before and they were good. Good luck with your search. You will find something nice I'm sure.

I bought one at the end of November from Geant in Ibn Battuta for about 1,000dhs - don't know if they have anymore stock. Might be worth a call. Also Go sport in Ibn B had them but about double the price. You can also check Dubizzle. When I was looking there was a wholesaler selling them, also for about 1,000dhs from a warehouse in Al Quoz. I can recommend Crystal Packing - contact Simon 050 385 5257 We moved in the summer and used Crystal, and they were very good. Reasonable price, reliable, friendly guys, nothing went missing or got broken.

Just been to Meadows petrol station and no problem there this morning (Friday 10th). Pumps all working, no queues (at 9am) and there was a tanker there making a delivery too.

Would also like to know the answer to this as we have searched in Dubai and not found any yet ! Ages ago I ripped out an advert for a Gilbert shop in Dubai Festival City , but have just called the tel number and they closed down last year. The Gilbert suppliers have a place in Al Quoz and someone is calling me back, so if I have any luck there I will post another message. I'm pretty sure we asked in Go Sport, and they said no, but I am happy to be proved wrong if someone says otherwise !
