Did you see the new teddy bear pops at Bakerella? OH MY GOD.... I cannot bear seeing someone eating those up though :D OMG, YES. That site always makes me faint. My mum still has her kenwood - it's been going for close to 40 years now.... TBH, it's really for the vanity factor. I've been lusting after a KA for a while now! Seeing them on every cooking show is hypnotizing... But I've heard nothing but good things about the Kenwood. I read somewhere that the inner gears of the KA are plastic now when they were steel before (someone correct me?) and therefore not as sturdy. Kenwood still has steel gears, if I'm not mistaken. But I'm a fanatic baker and therefore will be using it a lot, several times a day. So yeah, I think I really ought to go with a Kenwood. Just why couldn't they be prettier? Haha. :P

What's so special about Kitchen Aid? I really wanted one at some point and then did some research on the machine. Its only 300W whereas the Kenwood Major is 1400W so in terms of power at least the Kenwood has more. I also find that the Kenwood has so many more features and uses - like the liquidiser and coffee grinder, pasta attachment, centrifugal juicer, and sausage maker so why opt for a machine that has such low power output? Actually, I'm still researching it. I found the number, btw (04 3453 633) they're the AlGhandi Electronics. The 5 quart (4.83 litre) KA Artisan is on sale. Was 2367aed and now 1890aed. 300 watts really is rather low, you're right. I can't see how it's going to be able to knead bread though over 1800 people on Amazon seem to review/vote for it in high regards (4.5 stars out of 5). For 1900aed, though, perhaps it's better to be safe and go for a Kenwood? Argh, I'm so torn!

Silkor are major scammers. I wanted to do full body hair removal and they said ONE SESSION was 5000 dirhams. I went and did it in a Delhi clinic instead. 8 sessions for each body part with two complimentary "touch-ups" for 10,000aed.

DH still fears some of the Twilight Zone eps, especially the plane ep. Any previous watchers should know which one! As for me, I hate the concept of horror all together. I don't see it as "entertainment" which I look for in my media of choice. Although I do think The Others and The Sixth Sense are not your traditional take on horror, that's the limit of what I consider entertaining under this genre.

I remember reading my mum's Essentials magazines every month. They were chock full of s3x articles and I remember asking my mum plainly: "What is s3x?" She was not pleased, hahaha! Would fold in ads of bare naked ladies. Of course, I would unfold them to see what the big deal was and was shocked a woman allowed someone to photograph her like that, haha. Was about eleven or so, I think. Essentials was a pretty good magazine before they changed the editor and it was filled with Cosmopolitan and fashion/makeup sh i t and became like any other cheap mag.

Hello. Was wondering where you could get goodie bags / kraft material / recyclable bags for cheap (less than a dirham per bag) in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman. I don't need much, probably 100 bags or so. I'd like something printed on the bag in a one-tone colour. If anyone has any experience with this I'd appreciate it. TIA.

I don't think it's racist as she probably meant she wanted more Muslims to connect with each other and not necessarily limit the interaction of Muslims and non-Muslims. Just that she wanted that option to be available to her kids. In government schools there are an eclectic mix of Sudanese, Palestinian, Jordanian, Syrian, Iraqi, Saudi, Bahraini, Somali, Yemeni, Lebanese...etc students along with the Emiratis. At one time in a government school there were 50 Emiratis only on a high school premise.

really? does it get that bad? I heard that the local women don't wash their hair everyday to avoid losing hair. What Emirati women/men I know are fanatical about showering daily and yes that includes hair. Where did you hear that? :)

It is banned and the health ministry people went around and collected back the remaining stocks from all pharmacies months ago. You will not find it. If you need it, travel to India, buy Sibutramine there, same stuff. I am in the same shoes, it really helped me and worked really well with my body, it is a shame that it has been withdrawn. My husband is a big fan of Caribou and Second Cup. Don't drink coffee myself but looking forward to trying out Caribou's cheesecakes. The cheescake in Caribou really isn't nice. Tealeaf coffe bean got a nice one though ;) Hey, thanks for the rec Pamya! It's because I heard Caribou have a deal with The Cheesecake Factory that made me want to try it.

I heard Reductil is banned in Dubai. I also heard some pharmacies still sell them. I'm going to be in Dubai in four days' time unless the husband gets extra work and would really like to load up on it. I've used it before and it worked for me personally. So, if you could share any info that would be great. :)

I'd recommend giving Kinokuniya in Dubai Mall a visit. They have a large math section. If you can't find it there you can always order through the store. They usually don't take very long.

The laptop gift was a one time thing in a career spanning more than 35 years. The trainees were Emiratis and they'd pooled their money to buy that gift. Many afternoons my dad is perfectly happy talking about how verbally grateful his patients were after their sessions/treatments. So if a card or cookies is something you've thought of please go ahead. I'm kind of sorry I said anything tbh...

I'm always amazed when suggestions for gifts are at the higher end of the scale, especially when talking about local people. No offence katnip but a watch as a traditional gift?! He must be treating some pretty well off people. I mean what on earth should his race or ethnic background have to do with the gift? A gift is a gift and surely anyone would welcome the thought someone else had put into getting them something? I know I would. I don't think you have to spend any more than you would on anyone else you would normally thank. How about a nice plant like a peace lily? As an Arab when I think of gifts I think high-end. That's just me. I understand not everyone is comfortable with that idea and I don't judge. It was just my personal opinion. :)

My dad is an Arab and a doctor (general surgeon). A bunch of interns he'd trained bought him a laptop... He was pretty happy about it, haha. Not saying you should go out and get him a laptop, though! Just running my mouth. A traditional gift would be a watch or perfume. Or any high-end electronic product. Or you could bake him a cake. I'm sure he'd be pleased either way.

I've taken my son to the cinema many times for lack of a babysitter or whatever reason. I know the general temperament of my son and that is patient and quiet, a real boon, so I've never worried about him causing noise. Though, of course, if he had, I would've taken him out immediately, film be damned. :P

Stargazer: No, a female British doctor in an Abu Dhabi clinic. Can't remember her name nor the clinic, though, sorry! I have the memory span of a goldfish. I'm pretty sure any reputable clinic in Dubai should prescribe it, though, as I had the gall to ask for something stronger and she said Zopiclone was the strongest sleeping drug they could prescribe in the UAE. Maybe they're open to Ambien, though, worth a mention. :)

My 3 year old has been on a french toast kick lately. I whisk an egg, turn a toast in it (or two if I'm feeling optimistic) and then fry it up and cut it into squares so it's easier for him to eat. He seems to finish it most days. :)

My favorites: Sweet Factory (yes, gummy candy! :D) Sugar Daddy's Bakery for their amazing vanilla cupcakes (wish I knew their frosting recipe!) Paul Cafe for the chocolate croissant. Laduree for their macarons, naturally. Haagen Dazs for their Macadamia Nut Brittle with chocolate fudge, yum! Godiva for everything! I also LOVE Applebee's Blondie brownie with maple butter sauce! Just had a delish one right now. Feta cheese cubes, romaine and rocket leaves, cubed tomato, chopped carrots and a little olive oil. If my chicken thigh had thawed I would have cooked that up and added it too but I'll save another salad for later!
