the only circumstance where a mother should abandon her child (or a father for that matter) would be where they are mentally incapable of supporting them or are a potential source of harm to the children (eg, they are abusive, insane etc). there, that's off my chest... this article really riled me..

reviving an old thread... ;) Does anybody know if this 'capacity charge' can be avoided?.... I'll need to switch on Emicool soon but there is an outstanding amount of almost 2000dhs that needs to be paid... this is the amount of 'capacity charges' accrued since we moved in. We have not connected emicool or even signed a contract so it seems a bit steep really. Hope you can help;)

Izzy99, do you tip her usually? might want to have a quiet chat with her and explain that she won't be tipped anymore until the repair cost is recovered... that might stop the humming at least...

can you contact the consulate for more detailed info? I certainly would not be moving there anytime soon... also, I'd be surprised if you were not issued with a 'do not travel advice' soon. Could hubby postpone?

In addition to the 210K per year, I would be looking for: Schooling : all fees paid in full or 60K per child/year Utilities allowance: 5K per month Housing allowance: at least 15k per month (ideally the company would secure housing and pay the rent directly so you don't need to dip into your savings... and if you leave, you won't be held personally liable for the rent...) Relocation covered 100% I think you could manage well on this what planet r u living on...! people are lucky to have a job even in this climate in this country. 5k per month utilities what are you sponsoring the tennis stadium and have an olympic sized swimming pool in your house! you will find now a lot of companies do an all in package because they do not want to be landed with renting houses when they havent got the people in them. and even if you live in a provided property by your company you may still be liable for the rent if you left etc. ...lol.. i hear you bb.. it is a lot of money in comparison to many workers here... What I factored in here was that the OP is coming from London to Dubai so I would expect that like Philly mentioned, compromised living conditions would have to be factored in... I'd want to clear at least 19K per month to leave London... Also, if the kids are sick, will insurance cover everything like back home? Anyhoo, I know quite a few people who have packages well in excess of what I suggested here and they ain't exactly living the high life. Also, was not kidding about utilities, when you factor in the housing fee, DEWA and district cooling (if applicable), this is a reality.

Ok. Thanks all. So basically of course let her have a night "away" from home (I don't mind and YES I would like a night with out her) BUT if anything happens to her, I will get into trouble? Thanks again! yes, the sponsor is responsible for her. There are plenty of maids looking for work and you haven't sponsored her yet so keep looking, you will find the right fit soon.;)

I've had the chat and explained about grooming etc, not that they really understand, but just said delete anything like that in future. I think that it is brilliant that you are open about the grooming process. It only works when kids are not aware that they are being groomed. I will certainly do this with mine when the time is right. Great idea SW

Thank you very much ladies. I feel now I have a clearer approach to advise my friend on this matter without appearing that I am taking the ex's side. Yeah...her resentment toward the ex has obviously clouded her judgement and most importantly her feeling toward her hsbd. I hope I could get through to her before it's too late. If you want to maintain a friendship with her, perhaps you should just say "I'm sorry, I can't get involved on this one"... Unless of course she accepts that you disagree with her.... I'm with DRose on this one, I really feel for this boy. He does not deserve this...

I hate all the labour camps around Green Community and the construction. The roads are a nightmare at any time of the day and it's way out of Dubai. I personally would live first choice the Lakes, Second choice Arabian Ranches. ... hardly notice any noise to be honest and there are labour camps everywhere, they are not in the community though and the OP's hubby will only be 5 mins from work. I get what you mean about it being isolated, I rarely go into old Dubai and that's a shame but I still make the occassional visit and it takes 40 mins... The OP will be homeschooling and her hubby is working within 5 mins of Jebel Ali so it seems like an option that they should consider.;)

you were moving there for the first time..... your housing allowance was approx 400KAED..... your husband would be working in the jebel ali free zone....... you had two children (8 & 6) who were homeschooled..... would really appreciate your advice/suggestions......... I would seriously look at the Green Community: advantages: Very community oriented, children will have access to swarms (and I mean swarms) of kids their age whilst being in an enclosed community where they can walk to the park or shops without even crossing a road) Close to work (about a 5 minute drive) Quite a few families home school here so you may have an in-built support network.. Lovely and quiet and green..... disadvantages: isolated from old Dubai That bl00dy roundabout Cost of utilities and fees (the rent may be well within budget but water, cooling etc is expensive) I personally think this is the best development for families in Dubai but that's just me. Just have a good look at your package... make sure that it has a high allowance for utilities or that the company covers all, otherwise you could easilly be going through 5K per month on DEWA and 30K per year on cooling (we did with a villa.... Also, just my opinion but the East side of GC is better (don't have to cross the major road to get to the shops etc), it is older, more established and you will have less maintenance issues (we spent a fortune on our 1 yr old villa on the West, really poor build quality) You can get the family villas on the east for 300K (they are hard to come by but they do become available) and I'm sure if you offerred them 300K, the owners would throw in landscaping maintenance and regular 'outside window cleaning'.... You may find that you need a maid for the villas though... they are huge... anyway, good luck and a real estate agent from Allsopp (spelling?) called Victoria is great (believe me, they are hard to come by and if you use a relocation consultant, still mention Victoria, the reloc consult will appreciate it).. sorry, don't have her number or last name....

Hi All I am looking for an inspirational gift for my nephew's christening, I was wondering if anybody has ever considered or even taken out an educational plan - savings plan for child's education or university? I have heard of this, don't know much about it - but thought it sounded like a great thing to do - or I could even invest in a wine farm or something ... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. TIA what a fabulous idea, so thoughtful... ps: if you want to invest in a vinyard then I'd be happy to be the beneficiary...lol

Don't be surprised if it's just the water... happens... Could also be stress or that you are in a hair loss cycle (occurs every 7 years or so).. If you lighten your hair then you may want to consider stopping that as the water here can be a little harsh... :(

Nice letter CT...... removing emotion is a smart idea.... I've always spotted mates money whenever they've needed it and they've done the same for me but it's always squared away in the end... I suppose the OP could take from this the fact that this person is not actually her friend. At least she can remove her from her circle and stop wasting her time with a taker...

There is something quite gentle and kind about Sri Lankans.. that's a broad generalisation but I was happy with our Sri Lankan maid. She always seemed to have a smile on her face. Aside from nationality, you just have to be prepared to work closely with your maid so yours and her expectations are met. good luck;)

The apartments are generally big in the Green Community. Do you have kids? If so, you may want to consider the 3 bedroom Garden Apartments or the Terrace Apartments (these are huge....). Union Properties look after the Green Community but there are also apartments near the West side... can't remember their name....

uaemum, I feel for you... I did not lend a great deal, just paid a vets bill for a friend and still waiting on reimbursement...:( never gonna happen.... I'm sorry that your supposed friend stole from you. There is no other way to put it. I would not let up if I were you. You sound like this has put you in a bad position financially and your DH may not be happy if you let up... Perhaps approach her and say "have I done something to offend or hurt you? I am wondering why you will not pay me back as I am in need?" Put it back on her. Treat it like she is deliberately not paying you back and put it on her to explain why she won't give back.... She needs to do whatever she has to do to pay you back and if that means selling her personal stuff on dubizzle.. so be it.. people like this anger me. You did not deserve to have her use you like this. hugs.

Is the company you used http://www.ozzieopportunities.com/properties.html if so, you may have little rescourse through them as they seem to act as agents and appear to have no ties to Australia.. Although, you may find that these companies (seem to have been deregistered then re-registered in the early 2000's) may be affiliated..http://www2.search.asic.gov.au/cgi-bin/gns030c . If you have an Australian mortgage, have them confirm the Lot And RP of the property to see if it is actually available and fit for rent.... They will hold the deeds.... This all seems very shifty to me as Brisbane has seen good growth and four years is a long time to be vacant... Do you know anybody who lives in Bne or could you secure the services of a local solicitor / law firm to investigate this. You can also (cheaper too) hire a private investigator to check out the property and real estate agent to find out what is going on (eg are they discouraging tennants or leasing it on the side, that sort of thing)... The advertising costs seem a little out of control so please also look into other agents... Find out what the commercial property is good for (eg manufacturing,, business centre etc) and find an agent who specialises in this field... sorry if this is disjointed.. am thinking on the run..

however, I am glad I was not charged with the execution. I understand peoples' views that it was right but I could not have done it. I agree, I feel for the shooters... RIP Moosa, may your family feel some relief. I don’t see this mans execution as punishment and I doubt any shooter could enjoy the act of ending anothers’ life... What I do see this as an essential act of removing a threat from our population. My heart goes out to the victims families (I’m sure there are many more undocumented cases). My heart also goes out to those in the murderers family who did not know of his murderous character. I am personally relieved that this monster is gone.

Chillout... did you catch the national this morning? Great news... perhaps this could be implemented across the UAE..... DUBAI // A school appealed to mothers yesterday to volunteer as school bus attendants after allegations that a four-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on one of its buses. Teachers have volunteered to accompany school buses but it is "increasing difficult to continue", a circular issued to parents by the school principal said. "We would like to appeal to parent volunteers (mothers) to help us over this time until we get female attendants in place," the note said http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/education/appeal-by-principal-after-alleged-rape-of-girl-4

Well that would be even worse, LOL. I was just thinking they were protecting their kids! I'm going to look into that book, thank you for the suggestion. And I'm going to sit back and see what happens over the coming weeks and store away in my mind who has been steadfast and who has not for when we ultimately return. Then I'm going to get angry, LOL! Dang it! BMAP, I like what LT has to say.... just don't let it get to you, honestly, when you get here and have to wade through the constant stress of just setting up house.... you'll have enough to worry about. Trust me, DEWA alone will be your new arch nemesis... I would not be surprised if they do feel that you are taking away their children's friend and they are trying to protect their own children. They may not know how to react to you as well. Just continue to say hi and be as positive as you can. I'm a strong believer that people come in and out of your life with purpose. Take what you can from this experience and be stronger for it... hugs;) ps: I got varied results from the news. My close group of friends were nervous, excited and some were in denial, but they all love me and I love them all.

To get your deposit back, you will either need to transfer her to another sponsor or put her on a plane to her homw country. Until this is done, she is still your responsibility, cancelled or not. sorry
