Definitely explore alternative avenues of your child's interests. My daughter is very physically active but not particarly gifted athletically. To the point that on her last sports day she acted the fool and kept 'tripping' up in her 100 yard dash; not because she couldn't run... More that if she couldn't win, she was making an excuse for barely being able to compete. I was so sad that she felt that it was first place or nothing. If she'd tried she definitely could have come middle if the pack which we would have rejoiced. However, our thoughts on "doing your best makes you our champion" doesn't wash in her mentality (she's only 5). Like the other poster mentioned, we've started sending her to a drama class which she loves. It is physical but also stimulates many of her interests with like-minded children. She's loving it and shares a group of friends outside of school. She goes to Diverse Mini Musical Theatre ( we first looked at DUCTAC but Diverse was more convenient for location). There are loads of clubs and extra curricular activities all over the city to help explore and promote the positive behaviours and characters of our little ones. I hope you find something suitable. K

I'm sure there's a website for duty free which shows a list of prices you could compare. I've certainly found ski care to be cheaper at LHR duty free than it is here; Estée Lauder and Clinique although I know they're part of the same group K

So I spoke to the British Consulate in Dubai who told me that the British government Website was incorrect with the information they displayed. My marriage cert has to go back to the UK for the UAE attestation. What a pain! Apparently a raft of notary services stopped at the end of April. Along with not being able to just drop in for an on demand appointment any more! K

Right, called around and Fast Track do this sort of thing: http://www.emarat.ae/fasttrack/ They are located at selected Emarat petrol stations. There is an Emarat Garhoud - it's on the right just after the Wafi turn off, before you go over the Garhoud bridge. I'm on my way over there to see if they have the bulb in stock!! It'll be just my luck to be pulled over for it!!! Good luck K

Bingo; after doing a bit more searching, I've found this which looks like (since it's already been notarised and attested by FCO in UK) I can get a further attestation from the British Embassy here, in Dubai, then get the final apostille from MOFA in Bastakiya. The information looks current so my fingers and toes are firmly crossed. I'll be down there for opening time on Sunday and let you know how it goes. The first part of the process must be done in the UK but hopefully I can get these final steps done locally..... Otherwise I'll use an agency to courier it back to the UK. https://www.gov.uk/living-in-the-united-arab-emirates

I have just been through this. My residence visa expired but I learned that this is not the same as cancelled. I originally thought they were the same thing or that it would automatically be cancelled once it expired. Not sure if it is different for different nationalities but I had 30 days grace in which to go to DNRD and cancel my visa. I think I cancelled or after 28 days and was told I had 5 days remaining to exit the country. (Don't ask me why that's a total of 33 days). Then I did a visa run to Hatta with no issue. I heard of problems with people exiting on an expired visa who tried to re-enter bit found Thu couldn't because their visa hasn't been properly cancelled off the system Call DNRD and they'll advise properly. I found them to be very helpful. Hope that helps. Good luck K

Whilst I don't agree with that kind of behaviour, I do think an establishment has the duty to advise patrons of expected codes of conduct, before they pay to come in - then visitors can accept and pay or decline and save everyone the hassle.

LOL, this place was hard work!!! We went along last weekend with the kids - two of which are very normal 2.5 year olds. We took the scooters to give them something to do and get a bit of exercise. On arriving we were told by the guards that we couldn't use the scooters, they needed to be left at the gate. So, we paid for our tickets and went in minus the scooters. Well, the place looked very bright and beautiful and there were attendants everywhere. Each armed with a whistle that they were not affraid to use!! We'd got no more that 2 minutes into the place when one of my kids ran off and started moving towards the flowers - first whistle went off. As soon as that happpened lots of attendants started honing in on our location, all with whistles in mouths. My other daughter then crossed some grass and an attendant set off some kind of alarm as well as whistling. It was most surreal. The security manager came over to us to tell us to buck up our ideas and keep control of our children. We apologised but asked for our money back and offered to leave. We'd brought the scooters along to give the children something to do - they were removed. The park still took our money to get in, even though we had small children. The children then proceeded to do what normal, inquisitive, sensory beings do - investigate! Anyway, quick as they took them off us, the scooters were returned. The kids continued to scoot around the paths and problem was solved. We had a nice hour or so, the whistles were going off all over the place at other people as well I might add. If you keep walking round the perimeter path you'll come across a little stall which sells ice creams and drinks, just along from this are some tables, chairs and parasols. Nice potter, pretty but if i'd known it would have been quite as stressful I wouldn't have gone with the kids. I don't have any issues with places which don't allow children, but just let us know first! K

I've considered getting braces but my concern isn't so much the braces as the fixed retainer. For those who have gone through the procedure could you advise how you got on with the retainer? Does food get stuck in it? How long did it take you to get used to the mouth-feel of it?

Normally dinner is at 17:00 - 17:30 with the kids, all sitting down and family time. Week and weekends. If DH is in the country and can't make it back by 17:30 to have dinner with us all then I have two "half" dinners - A small amount with the kids then the rest when DH manages to get home. I think it's really important to set the example I want and eat with my kids, but I also love spending time catching up with DH.

Yes, my LO, now 5 used to go there. I actually prefered it to British Orchard nursery at the time of choosing. The staff are very attentive to the children, keen to give feedback and supportive of their needs. We loved going to all of the performances they put on throughout the year- obviously a great deal of time, effort and dedication required to organise it all, go through the rehearsals etc. and all of the children are involved. I felt they had a very nurturing environment. LO was very well prepared for FS2 when she arrived. At the school assesment the teachers were impressed that she went straight to the table and picked put her own name badge, even corrected them on how it should be spelt. Her reading/ spelling and numeracy put her in the top 5% of her FS2 class and she was very confident and comfortable moving to the Primary School. It was a no-brainer for me to put my next LO there. The only thing I can't stand are the crappy uniforms- the school went cheap on the tailors I think so we've had an ongoing disagreement about sizing. It's pathetic in the big scheme of things but that's my only bug bear! I'm not sure it's "tailored" towards Phillipinos, there certainly are a high proportion of Phillipino & Asian children. My little "whities" were in the minority. I didn't find a problem with the demographic mix, certainly not for pre-school. The only thing I would remark on is that my first LO did gain a distinct American twang until she went to Primary. This has since softened. I understand that the new nursery in RAK has taken some of the existing staff from the Mankhool/Bur Dubai branch. If the new branch is anything like the original one, more kids will get off to a great start. K

Might be worth asking the school if you could defer your place a year and start for FS2?? My little ones will start FS1 at Horizon Sep 13 but will have only just turned 3. I was intending to go through the application process and most likely defer for them to start FS2 the following year- bathroom issues being the main reasons. I have heard from other parents that this is what they did; definitely worth asking the school. K

You could always make your own as recommended to me by a specialist at City Hospital. Take an old pillow case, drop in 1kg (or thereabouts) of Jasmine rice, twist the fabric around and seal with a freezer clip to secure, leaving some space for the rice to move a bit. Then wrap the excess fabric around it to tidy it up. Put in microwave for about 1.5 mins on high. Et voila, done! Works a treat, may need to adjust time slightly but does the job just as well and can be used time and time again. Don't think it matters what kind of rice, but we had Jasmine and it smells lovely. K

They def need to look into the legalities of having the baby on the NHS. Five years ago when I was pregnant it was a real consideration to stay in the UK and have my baby. I'd not actually left, plus heard of many women flying back for delivery. two years ago when faced with a twin pregnancy, no insurance and considering my options I was advised by a British OB that the hospitals now have a dept where they can search and see if you're actually a valid NHS patient (not sure exactly which records they're privy to). If found that you've not had your pre-natal care there/not resident/not entitled to NHS care you can be charged quite a steep sum. I wasn't told exactly how much, just advised it would be comparable to being here. Don't know if it was legit or scare tactics, but the thought of being abroad for the whole time with no support, having to pay large fees and the "no fly time" between getting there before 34 weeks ( some airlines have different cut off points) and getting the baby's passport to fly back was enough of a deterrent to stay put and not look into it any further.

I've just watched the video on http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/passports1/ which explains the changes to the passport service. Apparently the passports will be printed and issued from the UK and the supporting documents will be returned separately from the Dusseldorf processing centre. Thank goodness for that, had a massive panic that we'd have to break it to our 4 year old that she couldn't come on holiday with us!!! Has anyone experienced this and could you advise how long it took the receive the supporting docs? Thanks, K

They were assigning name badges on entry to the classrooms but the child had somehow had hers removed. I should also add that the staff were starting to look through the photos to identify the little girl, there was no panic. All I was saying was that it would have been a two second identification process if any if her personal effects were labelled. K

The Fountain at the Movenpick in Oud Metha it's opposite the American Hospital. Kids under 6 (I think) eat free. They can eat with you or spend the whole time in the kids room. When I say kids room, it's one of the function rooms they convert by adding PS3, bouncy castle, little eating areas, toys, art and crafty things, TV etc. It's enclosed so kids don't really run backwards and forwards and it's supervised. Only been once and my then 3 year old was having the time of her life until my husband had a freak passing out incident and we had to leave after our starters!!!! I've not been for brunch but Beachcombers at JBH has a little kids room with entertainment. I've also heard good things from people with kids about the all day dining restaurant at JBH - can't remember it's name now!!! Weston was fab but my DD is highly active and I didn't like that she would just take herself off for a wander

You should be fine getting their uniforms today, they should be over the hysteria in the build up to the first day! Having said that though, you may find that you only get dresses/shirts and trousers and the sports shorts. Other items are yet to be delivered I.e. Book bag/ back pack, sports polo with logo They have the school hats but the size is 56cm which would fit an adult, even adjusting it to the smallest velcro fastening it flops around on DD's head! K

Yep, it's a joke. Went down there this morning for 09:00, supposedly when they open. Stood there with the other mums- all Horizon and Safa oddly enough!! We all had text messages last night saying our orders were ready and to come and collect. 50 minutes later the staff rolled up and didn't say anything, just opened up and took their positions in the shop. So it turns out that the dresses aren't ready yet, hopefully this afternoon.... They denied that they received a delivery yesterday at all and looked blank when we told them we knew that there was a delivery but the logos for Horizon and Safa were on the wrong coloured dresses. Even though the woman who wrote the post on Safa uniforms last night was actually there again!!!! Just a joke. What's more the White PE polo shirts have no logos on them and the staff were assuring us that no logo was required. I called the school immediately to ask if we need a logo or not to which they said yes but that considering the spectacular mess up we could just go with plain White.

Hi Lunamoon, We're in the same boat. The uniform shop in umm sequim has got the contract to supply these uniforms. Zacs on beach road used to supply Horizon uniforms until the end of last year. I took my daughter along to try some items on for size and placed an order a couple of months ago...... They really haven't a clue as to when things may arrive. It's a bit of a joke. However, I know that our hands are tied, I've done my best to try and procure the correct uniform for the start of term and all new starters will be in the same boat. Many thanks all for the leads. Just in case anyone else is interested this may save them some time; 4 options so far (yet to check if S&S still have them, thanks m&m). Distributor for UAE are Delta Trade tel: 04 810 5594 Delta Trade supply 2 stores: "Life Fitness" located by the entrance by Waitrose in Dubai Mall & "Fit Works" opposite Diera City Centre by the metro side of the mall. Both of these quote the list price and will offer 10% discount as standard. However, in addition to this there are two shops along from the Mazaya centre on SZR who offer 23% discount straight off: I.t Sports tel: 04 3251 423, www.itsportsdubai.ae & Al Kamda tel: 04 266 4200 www.alkamda.com. Hi CP, there are two nurseries which spring to mind, both near Karama Metro Station. The nurseries are equi-distant from the station on the Mankhool side of Trade Centre Road. One is De La Salle Montessori and the other is British Orchard. She should def go and check them out. Sadly when I went I got a very poor impression of British Orchard (great spangly facilities but not very customer friendly staff). My DD has just left De La Salle after 3 years (she's now 4) and I'm really happy with my choice. From looking at the FS2 English Curriculum that she'll be taking from this September, she's already covered the majority of it. However, they are a Montessori so they take a very all-encompassing view of the child's education focusing heavily on social and physical and personal development as well as pure academics. Both of these are a 5 min walk from the metro station - possibly shorter if you've got them in a stroller!! There are also a couple of others in Mankhool, slightly further from the metro station, one is on the Sana junction (can't remember it's name, but I think it's coming to the end of it's first year of being open) and the other is called Art Kid. Hope this helps. K edited by kirkidium on 27/06/2011

There is also the option of one of the Pure Fitness classes. I've been to Zumba and Body Combat and really enjoyed them both. (Never been to a group fitness class before I tried these) Little one comes along with you and either joins in, sits and plays with the toys and other kids at the back or sleeps in their stroller. There are little ones of all ages and it's a great environment. These are both indoor classes which is great for this time of year, but during the cooler months they also run a series of outdoor classes called Buggy Fit or BugEFit I think. Hope you find something to suit. K
