Also; are you sure that she is actually going back - it sounds like she maybe staying here to work somewhere else. Hmmm ... she could have nabbed herself a nice little holiday earner on double/triple the pay for someone who needs her for that period!

Wow. Just wow. Get rid of her. Soon as you can! No offence, but she's already walking all over you re the lack of cleaning/complaining/yelling at your kids ... how many more reasons do you need to show her the door? Do not give her the money. Do not let her push you around. Start looking for a replacement and work out the T&Cs re getting her out of your life.

Ha ha! When the baddie stripped off at one stage and started flexing his muscles NEKKID, I pointed out to DH that it would've been a waste to NOT have him do that since he'd been a CK model. I got the strangest look. :D

Absolutely concur with simples' recommendations re Madinat 'signature' restaurants. Pier Chic is a fantastic one, for example, where we've celebrated anniversaries etc in the past. Re your cake ... are we to assume this is a cake for 'home'? If so, enjoy! I've bought great cakes from Jones the Grocer (on SZR), and the Lime Tree Cafe - there are several different outlets - will also do delicious takeaway cakes if you order in advance. Highly recommend the carrot cake (if you're into that sort of thing); the icing is to DIE for. If you want to take the cake to dinner with you, however, do check with the restaurant first. Most restaurants would prefer you order a special cake/dessert through them (and a lot of restaurants will comp' it for you - I know Pier Chic does) and will charge you extra if you bring your own food.

We watched the first ep last night; intriguing! Gotta love Scully working her posh RP voice. Looking forward to the next ep as well. :)

There are no gray areas, really, and I don't like getting into debates especially with those who know a local lawyer, but the law is clear on this. Her friend cannot drink on her premises .....that is law.......if the friend has a license, that is to transport alcohol to their residence. If they drink in a licensed hotel then it s another matter, but the friends house is not licensed. So when you pick your drink up, take it home and keep it there. P.s.. Your lawyer needs to go read the law. I have it in front of me. Oh good. I'd be interested to get the actual letter of the law complete with back-up from an actual text whether in Arabic or English so that I have the info for the future. Since even judges and prosecutors seem confused about it (if the many varying reports in The National are anything to go by) this would be great to know. After all these years, finally some actual evidence rather than word-of-mouth and from Dubai faqs-like sites. Thanks in advance. :)

There are so many debates about this but to be honest, I really don't think you should worry, Deeva. So long as your guest isn't going to stumble out of your house drunk and disorderly then you and he will be fine. Decorum, sensitivity and good judgment are key too. Don't go swinging an unbagged bottle of booze around when you're on the way to a friend's house or be drunk in the taxi on the way home etc etc ... it's commonsense. :)

Thanks LadyBee, but just to clarify, the visitor does have his own licence. So, that then entitles that person to drink in other people's houses besides his own? Absolutely. Good to go. :) No, not really. The license entitles the user to purchase alcohol and transport it to their home within the Emirate that it is licensed to. Not to someone elses home. Er ... I'm aware that alcohol licensing can be a bit of a 'grey area' but the latest word is: Expat residents of the UAE need an alcohol licence to be allowed to drink alcohol, whether in hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs; or at home; [i'>or at private houses belonging to friends and acquaintances. [/i'> PS. I got that from a local lawyer. :)

No - you can be nice, polite etc to people but they know that there is a line ( me) but there are some people who invite this kind of thing by being too - nice? wrong word possibly... Hmm. Possibly. But I swear, I chat to everyone. I even know all the dogs - and their maids! - in our area because there are so few owners who walk their animals around here (sad). When we went to Nepal a few years' back, half the Spinneys staff gave me written lists of good places to visit/dine out at. I AM probably too nice but the end result has been lots of nice people to meet/chat to when I'm out and about. I love it. :) Or maybe ... just maybe ... I've been FAT for so many years that no one has the heart to comment because they assume I'll NEVER change even when they see me red-faced and cardiac-arresting post-gym! :D

If a person does not drink alcohol (not for religious reasons, they just don't drink), should they still get a licence in case a friend pops round and decides to bring along a bottle of wine? It wouldn't make any difference. The license one holds entitles THAT PERSON to drink and no one else. That is why one has to get a license via one's DH - with his spouse on the card as well. If the license just entitled the household/villa/apartment to be a drinking place, well, then every home could be called a licensed hotel. :D The alcohol license entitles the person not the establishment to drink the alcohol. Only in hotels is the hotel's license able to permit drinkers to be covered by their license. Hope that makes sense.

I'm not great at thinking of snappy comebacks on the spot and find it hard to be rude but it's time to answer these people back! My dh thinks on his feet and always manages a great comeback. He says these rude people say things because they are allowed o get away with them. . Which is why they tend to target western and some Asian expats, they rarely "offer" such comments to those more likely to kick up a fuss exactly - this happens when you are too nice to people! Awww ... again, I call shenanigans! I am ALWAYS super-nice and never get the nasty/personal comments. Never ever. And I'm pretty sure I don't look all that scary. ;)

PIP? I quite like his recipes and his books are usually quite inspiring.... but he does annoy me in person :) I met him a few years ago (not in a restaurant setting) and i found him charming.............. rather self effacing and with beautiful manners. And he didn't swear once!! I've also heard this about him. A friend of mine - also a chef - worked with him some years ago and said he was a total gentleman with solid work ethics, polite etc ... I just hate that the 'persona' is played up for the cameras; his talent should speak for itself. And I'm not a fan of the shouty sweary blustery stuff! :D

Yes, pip. :D From urban dictionary: The Pip: Someone who annoys you by not doing anything, just by being them. AKA the disease of being annoying. ETA: According to "The Oxford English Dictionary [OED'>," the word [spelled pippe'> was first used in WRITTEN English about the year 1425. It was a disease of the mouth, somewhat related to a disease that affected fowl, especially chickens. It came from the Latin word "pituita." It gradually took on other meanings, becoming associated with being annoyed or irritated, in the year 1881. . edited by LadyBee on 15/05/2013 edited by LadyBee on 15/05/2013

No i have not. Is it good? I watch so much TV now the weather is heating up, i shall have a look at it. We're only three eps in, but yes: it's very good, I think. Good old-fashioned Cold War spy thriller-type thing with some good twists and turns (so far!). :)

Although when i do catch it i often see a guy who i used to work with The version on youtube is pretty good quality actually (I watched it on my laptop though; I didn't hook it up to the television). Gordon Ramsey gives me the absolute PIP. Can't stand the bloke normally. But this was car-crash telly at its best. :D

They key for these creatures who insult you, is to make them feel they are pests. Sorry, but think about it, they do it knowing they are being rude and they want to insult you, just to amuse themselves, however you have to defend yourself from these pests.... being nice with them will just keep them having a go on you, specially if it's a place you are frequently visiting or using their services... so giving them a piece of your mind with a big smile on your face....this is the best comeback on them. Some posters will start telling me off how I describe them as creatures or pests....I repeat it's only the ones who do this rude commenting..... I do believe in the power of solidarity and demanding a change of these rude people comment to stop, if every one did this, I don't think any rude commentator will venture doing it again. I'm not going to 'tell you off' but I do think your post is a little harsh. I have no idea why some people get these comments and others don't. I mean, I have never, I swear on a stack of Architectural Digests, been told I'm fat or hairy or anything. Maybe they're gossiping away behind my back? Who knows? I don't really care. But I've been here almost six years and have had nothing but big smiles, lovely chat and fantastic help/service from everyone I've met. True story. I think - but can't prove obviously - that developing 'relationships' with people wherever they serve you/look after you, is very important though. For example, I know the name of just about every single person working at my local Spinney's (and they know mine and greet me by name too) and at the nail salon (and I'm not a regular by any means). Perhaps because I tried like crazy when I moved here to do that (I always make friends with people who sell me food etc, whichever country I'm in!) I somehow established something of a mini-friendship early on so commenting on my weight or whatever wouldn't have seemed appropriate? Again, I don't know. Point is: if you're offended by comments, do tell them, honestly and openly. Sarcastic and witty comebacks are all very well but they can get lost in translation as well, so if it were me, I'd just be straight about how such comments made me feel. :) ETA: I AM fat, by the way. But not overly hairy. :D edited by LadyBee on 15/05/2013

I never get these comments from salon girls or any other rude comments. Me either! I do get asked why I'm always smiling/happy though. No reason! I smile; they smile back. Laughter all round. :) Ninety-nine percent of the times I hit the supermarket I'm in very casual clothes ie gym clothes/sneakers/polo shirt/no make-up, so if I am more dressed up on the rare occasion, I sometimes get asked if I'm going somewhere special! But that's it.

I don't have left-handed kids, but eat and write with my left hand myself. There are no left-handed spoons, and the technique is the same. Except I was never sure about all the switching that goes on with righties when it comes to cutting meat, I never switch, but he won't come to that for awhile! I'm not sure, with apologies, of the nationality of the OP, but UK/Aust/NZ/Europeans don't switch hands when they're cutting food ie zig-zag style; they use the continental style of eating. Once you've cut your food you don't put the knife/fork down and swap to eat, but rather, food goes straight from fork to mouth. DH is left-handed and the only area in which he struggles is with knife/fork because it feels unnatural for him to hold his fork with the left hand and knife with the right. As a result, he's inclined to grip his fork in a 'fist-like' fashion rather than, er, more appropriately. If he swaps hands, his table etiquette is fine. :D PS. But his handwriting is awful. He should have been a doctor. ;)

No offence, but that IS a 'brunch'. Friday lunchtime-time/brunch meals kick off 12.30ish or thereabouts, have a buffet or set menu and, depending on the price-per-head, include drinks. What you are after, I think, is a Friday brunch which is tidy, not over-the-top, doesn't have the 'air' of a drink-and-stuff-yourself-until-you-fall-over vibe. They are rare, but they do exist. Friday is an opportunity for all the big hotels to make money from brunch-type get-togethers however, so you are probably after a smaller venue with less covers. Perhaps do a search on Time Out? You can set your parameters and make a decision on the suggestions available. Good luck.

Good to know, heycutie, and yes, I certainly conceded that my reaction could absolutely have been a whacked-out sugar rush. That said, while I also understand Tim Horton's has a great reputation and that they have 40 years' worth of good custom in Canada, that might not necessarily be the case in their offshore branches, esp. in the UAE. There are nowhere near the checks and balances at companies out here and I'm sure everyone can name a place from 'back home' that they have visited in a flurry of excitement in the Middle East only to discover that the food 'tasted different'. Cheers for your feedback though. :)

Oh yes indeedy. I also had a bit of a sweet tooth as a child (possibly because we were only allowed such things on verrrry special occasions so it was more the fruit of the forbidden tree so to speak than actually wanting the sugar) but as the years rolled on ... can't be doing with it (sugary stuff I mean!). "Thankfully it is not comparable to SARS," he said. "It has been circulating for a little less than a year, and we're at 34 reported cases, whereas with SARS it only took a few months to get to 8,000 cases."[/i'> I think we can hold off donning gas masks and/or becoming shut-ins for the moment. ;)

I do not drink coffee, but DH does and he could not finish his from TH. I did not like anything that I tasted there, and I tried just about everything. The donuts were just chemically, not nice at all. Now that you mention it ... the donut I had DID taste a bit 'chemical-ish'. I thought it was just the sugar content at first ie tasted very fake, but I suppose - even if they don't put MSG into their treats - the chemicals to keep things 'fresh' for longer would be shocking enough. I should add: I really don't eat sweet things at all. Maybe a piece of dark chocolate once a month, but even then: that's rare for me. So maybe it was just all the sugar that got to me. I still felt weird hours afterwards. :(

Not sure if you are working, but you will find that in most offices where there are a lot of non Muslims, there is a designated area, also closed off, where people can eat (if you don't have private office space) Last year, DH was the ONLY non-Muslim on the whole floor of his (government) office in AD and there was a special space made just for him to eat his lunch/have a cup of tea. His colleagues assured him that they didn't mind if he ate/drank in front of them, but DH felt that since the company had gone to such lengths to cater for him, it would be churlish to refuse (plus he didn't want to make his workmates uncomfortable, obviously). :D That is very kind :) .. Especially when one considers that DH already had his own office he could use; the company STILL made a space for him to eat away from his desk. Sweet. :)

What about takeaways? Are these restricted to only evening deliveries during Ramadan? Most restaurants which do takeaways will only open for evening delivery, yes, but it very much depends on the restaurant. You will have to call and check on a case-by-case basis, I'm afraid.

So your DD started learning at six-years-old? Okay. First off, while some children thrive learning from an early age, others take a little longer to mature and it can take time to adjust to the particular hand/eye coordination required to progress with a musical instrument. I'm not saying this is necessarily the case with your DD, but it is surprising that she hasn't progressed much in two years (and it may not be all the teacher's fault). That said, what conversation have you had with her teacher? Has the teacher expressed any concern about the learning curve your DD is demonstrating (or not)? If your DD is struggling, it is quite unprofessional that the teacher hasn't addressed this with you and discussed options for you. Is she learning in a 'traditional' way ie learning technical exercises, doing scales, sight-reading, doing listening/aural exercises? If not, from what you are observing of her progress, what is she being given to learn? I can understand your frustration and would be happy to advise you off-board if you leave your email address (am a piano teacher/used to teach in my home country). HTH.

Actually ... Daza is spot on. Stay off the roads in the afternoon altogether lol! I believe the government offices close at 2.30pm (happy to stand corrected) so the traffic will build after that. And even though Iftar isn't for hours yet (sunset) EVERYONE speeds to get home for a nap or to prepare food for the evening celebrations. Private companies have their own rules vis-a-vis when people can leave for the day, but all Muslims - regardless of their employer - work a much shorter day during Ramadan.

Also ... this isn't so much a rule as advice: try and keep off the roads after 4pm and before 7pm because they can be dangerous what with so many people dashing to get home for Iftar (to break their fasts). It can be quite scary! Top tip LadyBee! I plan my days around avoiding driving at these times. Or in the afternoon at all actually, the roads get progressively worse as the day goes on. Oh my word: it sure does! I'm even reluctant to do a tiny dash to the local shops so ALWAYS do what I need to in the morning. Still ... they're nice'n'empty then! :D

Supermarkets remain open throughout the day so you'll have no problems getting your shopping done. Some hotel restaurants will also remain open, albeit with black-out cloth blocking the diners from the rest of the hotel. There are some restaurants/cafes open during the day in the shopping malls; you just have to look for them. When Ramadan is closer, people will share the places they know that will be open so you will have a clearer idea of where you can find food when you need it. Malls are also open far later into the evening. There are no 'Friday Brunches' on during Ramadan so you'll find in the next month or two, people will make the most of having to 'do without' during this holy period. I do think it's better to just plan around it though and not *expect* to find food in all the tourist districts; you're better off just eating at home if/when you can. :) Modest dress is pretty much expected all the time in Dubai, though you probably don't know it! Of course, do try and be more respectful if you can; that means wearing clothes which cover your shoulders/knees, it doesn't mean you have to go completely overboard. ;) You are not allowed to drink (anything) or smoke or eat in public during Ramadan, and that includes your car. This rule is relaxed for elderly/infirm, if you are sick or pregnant and for children. Try to observe these rules even though it will be VERY hot during Ramadan out of respect for those observing. Also ... this isn't so much a rule as advice: try and keep off the roads after 4pm and before 7pm because they can be dangerous what with so many people dashing to get home for Iftar (to break their fasts). It can be quite scary! ETA: Do try, if you can, to attend an Iftar. They are lots of fun, especially if you can share it with a local family. Or try to get to one at Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding where you will learn lots at the same time. ;) . edited by LadyBee on 11/05/2013
