How awful! Just a thought: have you doorknocked your area? Your pet may have taken fright at fireworks or party noise and could be hiding in someone's garden or in a shed or something. You probably already know all this, but it's worth a shot. I really hope she is okay. :(

How long do you think fireworks should last? I think Sydney's clocked in at a couple minutes, also. Not precisely. I'm not sure for how long the 9pm curtain-raiser display ran -- eight minutes, I'm hearing -- but the midnight show went for around 13 minutes. Sky News showed seven minutes of it and we watched the rest online from Sydney.com. Brilliant. As usual, all set to music and explosions came from barges, the bridge, city buildings and right up the river. But no way was it 'a couple of minutes'. I'd feel ripped off had it been that short. ;-)

Ah, but with your budget, you could rent a villa, and if you like having a garden, it's definitely worthy considering. There are villas all over within your price range, some even with their own pool (eg Meadows, Jumeirah, Um Suqueim, Al Barsha). Have a search through the villas for rent on Dubizzle or even Better Homes; you can get an idea of what's out there and have, at least, a jumping-off point. :) Apartments are fantastic and you will be able to get a lovely one for the money, but in terms of privacy etc, a villa really cannot be beaten. Edited to add: I live in a villa just with DH and pets and it's fantastic. Even when he's away on business, I feel safe locking the doors etc, because the community is effectively 'gated'. I don't feel isolated at all. And it's lovely being able to shut out the world and feel like Dubai is 'out there' and our villa is our own little 'island'. :) <em>edited by LadyBee on 30/12/2012</em>

It actually keeps for about three months in the freezer. Just make sure you use a freezer-friendly container, and when you want to use the sauce again, defrost in the FRIDGE until softened and then re-heat it in the saucepan before using. Easy-peasy. In the past, I have frozen bread sauce and then defrosted to use again as sauce, but it can also be used in soups/casseroles if need be, so long as the breadcrumbs in the sauce aren't too 'obvious'. At any rate, yes, it freezes well. Just make sure you use it within the three months. And don't try to bring it to 'softened/sauce' status in the microwave; it's best if you defrost it naturally in the fridge. :)

By having a separate baby account you give your own friends a choice to opt out from the baby picture flood, while family and other interested people can opt in and have all your baby pics. The account is managed by the parent not by the baby. When the kid is big enough to be allowed to have her own account, she can set up an other one or take it over. I find this approach very nice and sensible. Not all your friends are interested in all your baby pictures, it is saving your Facebook friendship that would may be put on "ignore" by friends who are fed up with baby pics. Very good point. I've blocked a few baby-obsessed friends so I don't see the minute-by-minute drool updates. I adore them, adore their children too, but I don't need to see every minute of every day, including scans, thanks. I feel the same way about pets too, which is why I think Dogbook and Catbook on facebook were a great idea too.

Remembered another one: Gallipoli. I watched it with my year at school because we were studying WWI. Imagine 150 girls absolutely prostrate with grief -- we were 13/14 years old -- and then having to make our way home afterwards on public transport. Awful. But good at the same time if that makes sense. Great movie.

In lieu of making your own stock, check out the soup section of the supermarket. Spinneys, I know, sells cans of low-sodium chicken consomme; it's what I use if I don't have home-made stock on hand. Works beautifully. :)

Well ... you could always sneak her in. That is, if you're driving. I know people who've snuck their pets in when they've done the border crossing to Oman to new pastures. In all seriousness though, you won't be able to sell her; you can only give her away. It's illegal to sell animals here without a license. If you can give her back to the pet shop or a friendly family, that would be my advice. Either way, you'll be giving her away, not making money out of it, as explained above. Terrapins are very sweet even IF they bite. Good luck. Sad to lose a member of the family as you say, but if you can't smuggle her in, best to make sure she is stabled with someone reliable even if it's the place from which you purchase her.

The pre-ordering for Spins' fresh birds allegedly had a 15/12 cut-off date, but you shouldn't worry; there are already fresh turkeys on display and there will, I am sure if other years are anything to go by, be a nice selection of birds available right up to Christmas. From memory, they don't come with giblets etc, so if you want to use those bits for gravy, you're out of luck. Nice meat though; never had an issue. I think they're French and obviously halal-friendly. :)

I know this isn't the area you want, but Spinneys Town Centre rent DVDs as well so it's probably common to all of them. It's so easy. All you do is hand over a deposit -- from memory, I paid 100dhs -- and the rent for the DVD, about 10dhs depending on how new it is, and leave your name and mobile number. No silly registering with 20 forms of ID or anything. It's all done on trust. And when you return it the next day, you get your money back. Easy.

DD went to a b'day party where she got a Siamese fighter fish as a return gift. We would like to give it away to someone who is a fish lover and has experience. If you post your interest, I will leave my email address for a day... You can drop them off at ACE hardware at Festival city. They have an aquarium section They sell fish other people do not want in addition to their own stock. Cant believe people are giving away fish as a goodie bag gift. I didn't know ACE offered this service! Brilliant idea and a lifesaver for this sort of situation. Good luck, singdub. :D

Are there forums in UK/Europe for expats living there to complain about the most mundane trivial things? Do people really get upset about these things back home too? People don't do nasty things like this in the UK! Biting the heads off cucumbers - urrghhh! So not British! :-P Oh I am sure in the UK people do other types of nasty stuff lol. Yes they do. I'm sure I'm not the only person who bites the heads off all the babies in a packet of jelly babies before eating the remainder of them. There's just something about decapitated jelly babies that hits the right spot. Smirk. I bet you save this sort of behaviour for the privacy of your own home though; I just can't see someone ripping open a pack of jelly babies in the shop, decapitating them individually, and then going back for the rest later. ;)

Not an attack on you, but .... what an extraordinarily insensitive gift for a child. Completely thoughtless. Do you know what s3x the fish is? Siamese fighting fish are given the name because of the propensity for aggression, and as a result, really don't do well with other Siamese fighting fish, and there are only a few other breeds which get on okay with them anyway. Only someone with experience would take on a fish of this nature and only THEN, if the fish was guaranteed disease-free. Incredible to think that someone would give away a LIVING THING as a gift, passing on the responsibility to an unknown owner even if it was a fish (but it's not exactly a common garden variety goldfish, is it?!) If I were you, my first step would be to contact the birthday party hosts and ask them where they bought the fish. Thank them, obviously, for their kindness, but explain that you cannot possibly raise the fish yourself so you would like to give it back to the Aquarium/Shop where it was purchased. I can only hope that the family bought the fish from a reputable retailer and didn't just pick it up from some dodgy shop in a souk somewhere. I'm not sure what other advice to give you, but you do need to get this fish to somewhere appropriate soon. What are you feeding it? It needs special food too, by the way. Y'know ... the Goddards silvo cleaner -- avail' at Spinneys -- will do at a pinch. I have used the Silvo wadding, and agree it's great, but you might have to cut corners this time. I use the Goddards [it's a red paste that you apply and then wash off and then polish'> for the heavy-duty cleaning on my silver and silver cloths in-between times. I do order the cloths from Amazon UK though, but the paste: Spinneys. It's absolutely fine. :) Good luck though; hope you get what you need!

Womens feet are getting bigger. I am a size 41 and get fed up of asking for my size and an assistant brings me a 39 to try. When they do this i ask for a saw as the only way they will fit is to chop my toes off??? I think they think that all women here are a clothing size 6 and have size 4 feet! Ohhh .... I'm not a 41, but oh my word, I have had so many $%&@ situations where my size is out of stock and the ruddy sales assistant brings out a SMALLER size and says: we have 39 (or 38 or whatever), ma'am! Yeah. 'Cause that's why I'm here. To, apparently, buy a smaller shoe than my actual size so I can writhe in pain with every step I take. Cheers! Thanks a lot! NOT! Grrr!

You want a seven-foot WREATH?! Sorry, the post below was in response to someone who was after a 'real' wreath, not about a tree. :) That said, I bought a tree as well and it was 6ft tall. It's the largest that ACE stocks, sadly, so you will probably be better of trying Plant Street in Satwa or perhaps waiting to see if Spinneys get their orders through customs. I bought my tree from Spinneys the year before last and it was huuuuuge. The ACE one I bought today though, while only 6ft, was incredibly lush and smells fantastic. You can smell the pine all through the bottom floor of the villa. :)

*Whispers* I cheat. I use the Bart Wine Mulling Spice sachets; I dump a few bottles of red in the pot, and add 1/4 of a cup of brown sugar and half a cup of orange juice per 750ml. When adventurous, I also float some sliced orange/lemon on top. It doesn't matter how long I cook it -- or, indeed, if I boil it accidentally -- because I add a cup of brandy per bottle before serving. It really hits the spot and adds a lovely flavour. Hic.

Was wondering if anyone had seen any wreaths made from real tree? Not going to be in town for Cmas this year, so don't see the point in getting a tree, but would like something. I recall seeing them last year, but can't recall where? Visited Satwa this weekend, saw plenty of real trees, but no wreaths made of real pine branches. I bought a beautiful big one today from ACE Festival city -- real pine, pine cones etc -- for 149dhs. All you have to do is keep it hydrated by spraying it with water daily. Looks gorgeous. :)

Not so weird. We needed to replace a whole unit because the blokes fixing an air-con' unit, despite having a step ladder, used the loo to get up into the ceiling and subsequently cracked the cistern. :/ If you live in one of the Emaar developments, you can call them and ask them if they have a unit which matches the one you need to replace. Even easier if you have a maintenance contract because then all you will pay for is the unit itself. DragonMart, agree, is also a great place to hit -- they have loads of bathroom vendors there -- but do make sure you have a qualified plumber to do the do, and if you can get a unit which matches the pre-existing ones, even better. :)

I won't add to the details being discussed, but I would like to interject and say: it is important for there to be breaks included as part of the working day. It's all very well to set down a start and finish time, but there needs to be a bit of time off every so often, and that doesn't just mean time away from baby/children to iron or something. Being able to sit in one's room with a cup of tea or to have a walk outside or to read a book, watch a bit of television ... Everyone needs a break. :) I read an article from back in March on Gulf News -- about Dubai's 'pampered maids' -- and some of the responses from readers really blew me away. One employer stated that her maid was allowed to rest when she was sitting with the children while they were either playing or watching television. Um ... that is NOT a proper rest. That is just being allowed to sit down ... which is hardly a real rest break. Just my 10 fils. :)

DH just came back from real tree-buying - this is the update: Spinneys still a hopeless case - tree delivery stuck swhere at customs with 'no idea when' stamp on. Hyperpanda - AED 389 and they feel not very fresh - DH said colour also not too great. Ace - AED 399 but only 5 1/2 foot but really fresh and with a gorgeous smell!! edited by MaiTai on 10/12/2012 Was this just at ACE Festival City? Does anyone know if ACE SZR is selling real trees? :-)

I've not seen them, sorry. That said ... you might try WOOF Groomers in Al Quoz. They have a nice selection of natural dog chews/treats [Pet Munchies is the brand and they are the BEST; I recommend the chicken strips for a larger dog'> and they could well have ordered in additional types of chews for the Christmas season. *Whispers* You do know that your dog won't be able to tell the difference between a normal chew and an antler-shaped chew? Yes? Rightio then ... ;-)

I wouldnt mind taking a gander at your pre-cooked glaze recipe, just in case my plans dont work out This recipe is for an 8kg ham. You may need to reduce the cooking time if you have a smaller ham. You can also cover the ham with a bit of foil partway through cooking so the glaze doesn't burn/overcook. You need: 1 ham ! 1 large jar of honey Crystallised or candied ginger [in the baking section in Spinneys'> Cloves [buy a bag -- in the spices section -- as I've found the bagged cloves have longer stalks, so easier to use'>. LIME GLAZE: 1 cup/250ml lime marmalade [I use Rose's, avail. in Spinneys'> 2 Tblsp fresh lime juice 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar [just the light sugar is fine'> 1/4 cup sweet sherry or orange juice Combine all ingredients in small pan until the marmalade melts. Place ham on a roasting rack or in a disposable baking dish. I usually put the ham into a big foil dish and put this dish onto a baking tray [for ease of carrying because it's heavy!'>. Put about an inch of water in the bottom of the dish so that the ham doesn't dry out and top up when necessary. Score the ham fat all over. Try not to let the knife go all the way through [just deep enough so that you can see the criss-cross pattern; it will shrink and bake into a nice pattern as it cooks'>. Drizzle or brush honey over the ham to cover and bake in a moderate oven OR covered BBQ/Weber for one hour. Remove from heat and cool slightly [so you don't burn your fingers!'>. Decorate as desired [I use thinly-sliced ginger held on by cloves in a decorative pattern: delicious!'>. Brush ham with half the glaze. Cook another 30 minutes. Brush with remaining glaze; cook another 30 minutes. This recipe is for a cooked ham but if you prepare gammon in advance, you can use this recipe for that too. I know it might seem offputting to use ginger/marmalade, but even children think this is yummy. The sweetness of the honey is balanced by the bitter marmalade and the glaze looks glorious as well as tasting fantastic. :-)

I've only ever ordered ham from Spinneys, JB, sorry! Maybe Park'n'Rob, I mean Shop, could help? Or one of the independent butchers? There are a couple here and there [eg G&D Park has one'>. If you decide to go the pre-cooked route, I have a fantastic easy gorgeous glaze that will knock your socks off. And a recipe that works for either the oven/cooker or a BBQ. PS. Re the ordering of hams/Christmas food before Christmas itself. It is true that Spinneys gets a big delivery on the lead-up to Christmas and what you do is: you nominate the time/day you want your order. If you want food BEFORE that, then I advise going to talk to the supervisor butcher ASAP! They may [may!'> be able to get your ham in early. They do have frozen gammons available all the time [ask'> which of course won't be as nice as the fresh ones, but if you're desperate, that could be an option. I have had luck, every so often, getting orders out of season/date, so you could be lucky. Talk to them though. That's your best bet. :-) <em>edited by LadyBee on 03/12/2012</em>

To reiterate [from me too'>: you cannot buy ham on the joint here. You can order as many kg as you like [well, within reason'> but it won't come on the bone or with a hock. Gammon = having to do the overnight soak and all that guff. Using a pre-cooked ham -- which is customary for a lot of people so they don't have to do all that -- is very easy. You just have to glaze/decorate and re-heat [still needs an hour or so to do the do'> rather than taking up cooking/pot/oven space preparing from scratch. I promise, it really does taste good! This is my fifth Christmas and no complaints as yet. ;-)

I got a 6KG Gammon (the hams are cooked) from Spinneys last year and have just ordered this years. Can't wait! You're energetic! Well done. I've done gammon before -- tastes gorgeous -- but I find the cooked hams, glazed and 'cooked again' taste just as delicious. Along with everything else ... can't really be bothered *blush* with doing it completely from scratch. Admire those who do though. PS. To the OP, if you have a covered barbecue, doing the ham that way is amazing! Also frees up oven space. :)

You can pre-order the weight you would like at Spinneys, the order forms are available on the meat counter. It's called a gammon on their order form No, gammon is separate to the ham on the form. You can order gammon, of course, but the hams are separate and come in COOKED or SMOKED or HONEY ROAST.

Sorry to butt in: you can order however many kg you want. I normally order a 5kg and it's great for The Day, and anything not used in leftovers freezes beautifully. I recommend the HONEY ROAST as it has the most flavourful/sweet meat. It will come studded with cloves into the skin/gristle [I know, weird'> but peel that off to reveal the layer of fat underneath and glaze and decorate as desired. One thing though: you cannot buy a WHOLE ham; only a half ham. You can get a huge one if you need it, but it won't have the hock [which I think always makes it easier to carve as well as looking great'>. Besides that, always been happy with the Spinneys hams. :-)

How long is their holiday? I have an adult wheelchair you can borrow if I can get it back by last week December. PS. Paid 350dhs for it outright at Life Pharmacy in 2009 [worked out cheaper than hiring!'>. I'm sure the price has gone up since then, but I figure when I reach old bones, it's a good investment and MUCH cheaper than buying in the UK. ;-)

If there is a price tag, you can aim for 50-75% off that figure and in my experience, if they know you, they start off nearer to that anyway when you start talking. Spot on. :-)
