I have British parents, a British passport, British husband, British children and I lived in England for years. Despite all that I still can't get my head around the British obsession with class. Nor why Benedict Cumberbatch is considered sexy :D Other countries have obsessions with class also. He is cute in a floppy haired, posh bloke way however give me Hugh Jackman any day!!! Snort. I've said it before: I'll say it again. Having known Hugh since he was about four, let me just say that YES he's cute, but he is just way WAY too nice. Nice in a little brother kinda way. He's also hopelessly devoted to Debs so I doubt he'd succumb! :D

Islam is not as rigid a religion as some of us try to make it out to be, due to zeal or whatever reason. Quite. There are very few countries which insist upon dawn 'til dusk fasting for people outside the faith and in fact, I have worked with people observing Ramadan in Australia and England who stress that their fasting is *their* thing, and that the added challenge of others eating/drinking in their presence is a test of their faith that they welcome. I don't think I've come across a single observer who doesn't feel that seeing people eat in front of them while they are fasting doesn't add a deeper meaning to their own fasting. But that's not how we live here. I am happy to absolutely respect the religious mores of the UAE and do my absolute-est to sip water discreetly [I once did it hiding under the dash of my car in IKEA because I was desperate!'> but one should also be aware that God, I am fairly safe to say, does NOT want people to suffer. He doesn't want people to expire from lack of hydration, or pregnant women to collapse for want of food, or children to become overheated and fractious, or indeed anyone to go BEYOND the ordinary tests of faith that Ramadan places on its adherents. If I have learned anything about Ramadan, I feel sure that is NOT what Ramadan is about. Muslims are asked to sacrifice themselves to an extent, sure, but God doesn't want people to go 'above and beyond' the call of duty because that fails to recognise what the fasting period means and should mean to people observing it. I have the utmost respect for everyone during this holy period, but please ... a little reason helps too. That applies to all of us. And even though it's only a month away ... Ramadan Kareem to all. :)

I reckon its a sign of education and/or class. The only people I know who still hit their kids ... Always the controversial one! Slightly ironic considering you just posted about resting your head on your boobs, some may interpret such a statement as "toilet humour". Let's not even mention the "its" in the same sentence as education. lol I didn't say which class, did I? edited by marytodd on 19/05/2014 How funny. I was made familiar with the maxim -- some years ago -- that the so-called 'lower' class hit, the middle class throw things, and the upper class just freeze each other out with pointed stares + silence. In the ensuing years, I've since been disabused of that assumption. ;) It's easy to put this down to class differences... but unfortunately research suggests that domestic violence is an issue for ppl of all social backgrounds. .. which is why I capped my post that I've been 'disabused of that assumption'. Totally aware that is nothing to do with class or upbringing or whether one's blood is blue, red or has hammer+sickle-shaped platelets ... It simply doesn't matter. One only has to look to the Nigella/Saatchi situation to realise that violence can occur on any social stratum.

A lot of peopel who advocate corporal punishment faced it themselves, so they use the reasoning "a bit of spanking did not kill me and turned me into a better person" Well, I never had it. Although I think my brother received 'six of the best' more than a few times when he was at private school in Sydney. But he and my SIL are determinedly anti-corp punishment, but they were FINE when I slapped one of their children's hand away from a hot flame because I didn't want them to be hurt MORE by the flame [than they were by my slap'>. If the slap is to correct -- immediately, and to put a child out of DANGER -- then I reckon it's okay. I don't see it as a good thing if it's done to punish ... even if it's explained ... after the fact. I would SLAP someone away -- with force -- from a lethal situation, be it fire or whatever -- and quite frankly? Go me. Same goes for me and slapping my niece's hand away from a hot flame I just know she was poking because she was testing boundaries [even though she was putting herself in danger'>. I'm cool with that. But that's about danger. That's about pulling someone away from a situation in which they could possibly be hurt. I'd do the same to an adult if I thought they were about to hurt themselves. I repeat: anything else? Not my provenance. But trying to save someone else from harm? Go nuts and do what you have to do. edited by LadyBee on 20/05/2014

LadyBee, was your SIL angry? Not at all. She just rolled her eyes and told my niece to stop blubbing because she deserved it. She also told my niece that if *I* told her not to do something then it was the same as if she or my brother had done so, and that she should respect me as such. I approached her -- and my brother -- later to apologise and they were just too too kind about it. Said they would have done the same, and they are NOT a hitting/smacking/slapping family. I did feel awful. But the idea of her little hand near those flames! It was more urgency + desperation + split-second timing than anything else. . edited by LadyBee on 19/05/2014

After REPEATEDLY telling my niece to stay away from the hot stove [where I was preparing pancakes and she was keen to poke them!'> I did slap her hand away when she was too close to the gas flames. She was five. She burst into tears and told my SIL that I was 'mean' ... but I don't regret my action for a second. Anything else though: no chance. Hitting is hitting and I think it's wrong. If I'd tried to grab her hand instead of slapping it away, I may have burned myself too.

25-30 hours is the absolute MAX. It will more likely be 20-25 hours. Plus, the person employed would be able to take time out for school pick-ups etc and work around their own commitments in order to fulfill the role.

What sort of skills are you looking for LB? Bu88er it. I'll just put the 'basic' job description here ... A British IT firm is seeking a skilled Project Manager for a contract period of six months with an expected weekly commitment of 25-30 hours. However, there will be some degree of flexibility for someone with the right skills and profile. This would be an ideal role for someone who now lives in Abu Dhabi and wants to return to the workforce initially on a part-time basis. We require someone who is highly skilled in the process of managing projects to PMI, MSP or Prince standards and who can stay on top of all actions, deliverables, timelines and risks to support an extremely technical team. You will need to prove that you have at least five years’ experience in project management using an industry-recognised methodology, with proficiency in any version of MS-Project and familiarity with MS Office Suite programs essential to the role. British English is the language of the project and excellent communication skills are imperative ie English needs to be spoken and written to first-language standards. If you do not have a working visa, the company will process this on your behalf on receipt of an NOC letter permitting you to work. An attractive package will be negotiated for the right candidate.

ladybee you can place an ad in the jobs section, you pay for it, but you get good responses. did this recently for a professional role. speak to admin and they will sort for you. That's brilliant. I emailed the jobs section this AM and am waiting for a response. I don't mind paying; it's the EW audience I'm keen to target. As this is a P/T position, we are looking to fill it with the best possible candidate who is happy to work fewer hours, BUT I personally am keen to attract someone from the pool of great women I just *know* are out there who are looking to get back into the market but can't yet work F/T [and who want to use this job as a leaping-off point for future roles'>. Thanks so much for the feedback. I will await the EW response. :) . edited by LadyBee on 19/05/2014

Just to add though ... We're in the year 2014. While it's fair to say there are a lot of trailing spouses out here, there are still many women who -- shock/horror -- work or want to work. Yet on the EW home page -- "the best community website for all the information you need about living in Abu Dhabi/Dubai/etc" -- the selection of topic links are: Food & Drink Education Family Sightseeing FAQs Discover Dubai Shopping Where to live Out & About [concerts, charity events etc'> Health Beauty Fitness & Nutrition And that's your lot. I can't deny the list is comprehensive for the purposes of filling one's day or weekend, but to not even have the tiniest reference to advice/help for working or even volunteering is pretty poor. Not everyone is a SAHM in these parts. Or wants to be. :(

Hi there. You could try using the Search button and look for 'children' 'holiday' to help you with your question. Or ... how about starting a new thread with a more specific subject line? I thought you might be asking for help deciding where to go on holiday, not for advice on how to entertain the kids so that might be why you haven't had too many responses. Just put a post up asking for Entertaining children in summer in Dubai, for example. Or something similar to that. Good luck. PS. Sorry, no children so I can't help you. :)

what colour do you paint the ceiling? Looking at new apartment and I really want bright white walls, what should I do with the ceiling and cornices? (ceilings are on the low side from memory) Do I go all the same what about contrasting cornices (would that draw attention to the low ceiling). What is the best shade of white for a darkish room? There are so many white paints around ranging from 'arctic' whites -- which have some blue/grey therein -- and 'creamy' whites which are warmer. For a dark room, stay away from the grey-whites as it can appear colder to the eye (unless you're going for that look). As for the ceiling, if the room has cornices, I think you achieve a better 'look' if they contrast slightly with the wall/ceiling colour. We have deep teal walls in one room with white cornices and a cream ceiling. In other rooms: creamy walls, white cornices and the same cream-white ceiling. Looks good, I think. Good luck.

what are you talking about? I received a call from this guy who said he's working from du. Then he asked for my account no. and he then told me I've won 200,000dhs from duty free and I have to process 1,500dhs of recharge card to claim it... I hate being new to Dubai... :( Perhaps a good time to remember as well that banks, phone companies, DEWA and the like are NOT supposed to ask you for your account number: all those details should be on file. If anyone in the future asks for your acct number or PIN or password, then you're probably being scammed. This obviously doesn't apply if you are phoning your own bank and you go through the official steps to speak to a customer services agent to ask about your own account and they have to verify you to provide the information. ;) Rotten for you, OP, but once bitten as they say ...

If its the same company as I think, I have been paying this way for last month. I ran out of credit and they delivered, zero'd out my account and when I topped up the following week the amount due was deducted. You don't have to pay the amounts they suggest (AED 150 or AED 400) its just with those amounts you get 'free' money on your i-cash account. Quite fed up with this company for making new rules every few moths.... is there any other water supply company who deliver non reusable bottles? Thank you. edited by NikitaD on 14/05/2014 We get Masafi 4-gallon bottles delivered every weekend by Earlybird along with slabs of tonic water and boxes of 1.5L bottles. Very easy. Same time every week or you can do special orders as needed at other times.

Ours only like Dreamies and believe me we've tried everything else on the market, apart from these. When I do get round to placing an order, you may be getting a message offering you free cat treats for your dog ;) Ha ha! That would be lovely. The Thrive treats are great, seriously. They are little pieces -- perfect cat-size -- of super freeze-dried chicken and my dogs go cuckoo for them. If it wasn't for the fact that they seem pricey (dogs are so much greedier than cats!) I'd get them all the time. On the upside: they are very very light so the Aramex shipping cost is cheap compared to shipping the heavier Pet Munchies I buy every couple of months. :)

I get dog treats shipped from the UK -- freeze-dried chicken strips and such -- and have done for years. Never had Aramex refuse the order. :D I always thought that shipping pet supplies this way was banned. Our cats only like certain treats which we can't get here :( Nope! Never had a problem; I've been doing it for years. I get Nature's Menu treats (or as we call them: puppy crack) and Pet Munchies from Amazon -- the chicken strips and chicken chips -- in bulk ie 8 packs at once in a big box and get them Aramex'd. Of course, you have to pay for the weight (yikes) but my dogs don't really enjoy anything else. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Munchies-Chicken-Strips-Pack/dp/B0053PDVI0 ETA: My dogs LOVE the Thrive cat treats and we've imported them too. On the subject of mangoes …. I haven't had a good one yet in Dubai. Where is the best place to buy tasty mangoes? I always wait until the 'right' time of year ie Jan/Feb and buy Queensland mangoes from Spinneys. They cost a bomb but are SO worth waiting for. It's a pity that they cost the same for three that I could pay for a whole box at home, but I don't mine: I love seasonal goodies. :) ETA: These mangoes are big, golden with a beautiful red blush and just melt in the mouth. Oh wow. Am salivating now. :D . edited by LadyBee on 07/05/2014

The jar was on the counter -- silly me -- and was inadvertently shipped with the other kitchen things. By the time we'd realised it had been packed, it was too late. The coffee had an airtight lid -- it was green-label Moccona espresso instant granules -- and yep: it had turned into goo and the top of it was a weird lime green. I can only presume the heat reacted with the anti-caking agent that is often added to granules of this type. Instant coffee???? :\: Desperate times = desperate measures, Iz. The manual coffee maker had been packed too so the Moccona was for fuel not necessarily flavour! ;)

good advice thanks! I will get quotes for separate shipment. Temperatures get really high. When we came to dubai all the candles I had put a box melted! Please please consider sending your piano separately. You're obviously aware of the temp/humidity issues facing shipments and pianos just do NOT cope in the general scheme of things. Remember, the piano will sit on the dock for goodness knows how long, and it's just not worth risking your Yamaha's long-term health in this way. Sorry to come over all ... over-excitable, but I wouldn't ship my piano without specialists taking care of it. If your piano isn't shipped carefully, it's like putting it through the same experience as a car in a smash. It'll just never be the same again. so how would you ship a piano separately surely it would still go in a box in a container sitting on a boat for 4 weeks in the heat and whatever, when it gets to port not all containers sit there for long long time. Well, when I was doing research into moving my piano from Oz to UK, I chatted to a LOT of piano moving specialists and the difference between sending it using a reputable agent and carrier is that the piano WON'T just sit on a dock. Of course you pay extra, but I was assured that it would be packed really well [not just with styrofoam stuffing'> and would be last on/first off, like airmail. PS. Four years ago, I used a specialist carrier to import an antique Mora clock from Sweden to Dubai and I swear, I wouldn't have done it any other way. It was packed well [in a specially-made wooden box'> with all the correct insulation. I was sent texts when it left and 'landed' -- with the flight number -- and it was at my villa that afternoon. That's the sort of care I'd expect if I imported a piano as well. :)

Mouldy walls. Lead paint. Sloppy kisses from dogs/cats. Mud pies. Grubby floors. Three-second 'rule'. Fingers in mouths [and not just mine'>. Licking chairs. Licking playground equipment. Licking everything! Sand in mouth/eyes/nose/elsewhere. Dirt everywhere. Other children's germs. Pox parties. Random creek water. Stormwater drains. Eating flowers. Playing with bees. Stung by bees. Peanut brittle. Full-cream milk. Allergic reactions. Bluebottle stings. Horse fly bites. I could go on. I'm almost 47, had a free-range childhood, can't remember being told 'dirty' [though I'm sure I was at various stages'> ... and I'm fighting fit. Lighten up. Don't sweat the small stuff. You checked off 2 out of 65 on this list! What! You don’t hate people at all. You might even like them. That’s gross, but you’re probably very well adjusted and pleasant to be around. Maybe even… **shudder** …a people person. 'Hate' is a really strong word. I got 4/65 because I find some stuff a bit annoying but seriously ... 'hate'? Nah. They didn't even ask any important questions like whether I hate cruelty to children/animals, racism, the unequal job market around the world, the lack of a single payer healthcare system in the US, bullying, US high school movies featuring cliques/bullying, indiscriminate drone bombing, the situation in Syria, Gaza etc ... I could go on ... Silly.

Heh! Good luck. Hopefully, this can stay bumped to the top and someone can step in with a real-live solution! :)
