Nor Crystal palace Which swiftly became a "white elephant", was dismantled and moved to another location in the suburbs and finally burned down. Not exactly the best example of a legacy. Oh, I dunno ... they're off the bottom of the league table as of now. ;) Oh you optimist!!! *Grins* Quite. Winning an actual away game is not to be sniffed at! :D

Can't be...TV is on, official site on...nothing yet officially!! I don't deny that -- but I'm watching West Wing (again lol) on the telly -- and following the live blog on Gulf Business. THEY announced that Dubai had won already. Then they deleted the post/update and delivered a great big wodge of egg to my face. Oops.

Logically, since Dubai has 52.73% of the votes, cannot lose! Even if all Izmir's votes go Yekaterinburg... We've won. It's been announced on Gulf Business already.

business will grow because of it. So there's that. Maybe. edited by LadyBee on 27/11/2013 What goes up... Will come down.... How painful will the crash be.... And when..... As I said, we hope to be long gone by the time 2020 rolls around. We hope our business grows in the short term. But we'll be out before everything -- IF everything -- comes crashing down.

Apart from my rents going sky high. I mean, how many abandoned buildings have there been from previous expos in previous countries? No idea. I know that Brisvegas got a huge bump from its expo in '88 -- I went to it; it was amazing -- and as far as I'm aware, they never looked back.

Sometimes it's not a question of the statue, but the fact that statues are frequently used to smuggle contraband. There can be delays etc because statues have to go through a separate process to ensure there's no organic material/drugs inside them, and some companies are reluctant to ship for that reason.

Just make sure that it IS under 10K and not one euro/pound over. The problem is: you have to prove that it's yours. So make sure you have bank statements to prove that. By the way, I don't know why you're so worried about it being confiscated; if you want to take in more, it's simply a matter of filling in a form. That's it. Just fill in the form at Customs, prove the money is yours, and you are on your way without any issues. They're not going to take your money if you go about it the correct way. They are more concerned about money laundering issues so provided you can prove it's your cash, then you are good to go. Don't try and hoodwink Customs. It's not worth it.

Oh, pity RAW couldn't help you ... so your next step should be to try a catering supplies place. There's one on the same street (well, it's in the arcade next door) to Lime Tree Cafe in Al Quoz and they have a tremendous selection of stuff. I haven't been there in a few months, but I do know they sell all sorts of coffee equipment there as well. Um ... there are no doubt loads of other catering places too, but since the one above retails to the public, it might be a good place to start. Good luck! PS. I'm glad you *get* how coffee types can be! *Big grin*

RAW Coffee would be your best bet. http://rawcoffeecompany.com/ Just a bit of advice though: tampers come in specific weights and widths. You really do have to get exactly the right size by mm. When I bought the tamper for my machine, it was sent away to be pared down by a specialist tamper maker so that it would fit perfectly. So rather than just buying a tamper, you have to find out the make of the machine and the best-sized tamper for it. Moreover, the person who will be using the tamper may have their own ideas as to how heavy/light they want their tamper to be. You only have to visit any number of coffee-aficionado blogs to learn just how seriously people get caught up in this business! Hope that helps. :)

Oh dear. The joke really did fail. The reason I wrote paediatricians was because of a famous incident where an actual paediatrician was targeted -- her house daubed with paint etc -- because the 'mob' -- incited by the tabloids -- thought there was a paedo living there. [i'> Self-styled vigilantes attacked the home of a hospital paediatrician after apparently confusing her professional title with the word "paedophile", it emerged yesterday. Dr Yvette Cloete, a specialist registrar in paediatric medicine at the Royal Gwent hospital in Newport, was forced to flee her house after vandals daubed it with graffiti in the middle of the night.[/i'> http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/aug/30/childprotection.society

This scam has been going on for years Etisilat would never ring from a mobile number or ask you to take you Sim out They would ring from a landline and ask you to come into their office What is surprising is that the scam is so blatant. DH bought two phones + SIMs for visiting execs from an Etisalat shop on a Saturday morning -- about two months ago -- and that very afternoon, both numbers were called and DH told that he had 'won' a heap of money. So as soon as the SIMs left the shop, someone was onto it and put the numbers into their dodgy 'system'.

Thanks for that, mum2girls. I seriously admire people who want to get things 'off the ground' and want to make a personal contribution to crises of this nature, but following the advice of those who have been managing these types of events for DECADES is often the best way to go. We have given money. The last time we gave 'goods' was for the Gaza crisis a few years back when we were satisfied that said goods were being handled by the appropriate registered charities; we knew that our duvets and saline tablets and what-have-you were getting right to the source of the problem. :)

It's got to be 99% genetics, I reckon. Because if lifestyle counted for anything greater, then my face should have fallen in decades ago. I moisturise ... when I remember. I buy something expensive in duty free that I promise I'll use religiously and it sits in the cupboard until it gets crusty. I drink ... to excess. I love coffee and gave up herbal tea in my twenties. I often forget sunscreen, but I don't spend a lot of time in the sun, so ... Yeah. As I said: genetics counts for a lot because I'm closer to fifty than forty now and I'm still largely wrinkle-free. And there's no portrait in my attic either btw. ;)

Next business day delivery: worth checking out. They do vino and gifts. Recommended. http://everythingbutflowers.com.au/ Try roses only for flowers/booze gifts though if that's the way you want to go. They don't just do roses, and they also send wine/bubbles/etc. http://www.rosesonly.com.au/ PS. If it was a local delivery to Sydney, you can't beat Pearsons. Best flowers around. And they do champers etc as well. Congrats to the happy couple. :)

As with last weekend -- when England played Argentina -- the match will be shown on Al Jazeera Sports. It was shown on JSC 3, from recollection, in HD with English commentary, so you're all set so long as you subscribe. Failing that, you will have to find a bar that is showing it, and I promise you: there will be HEAPS. I can't speak to Arabian Ranches area, but you might try calling Polo Club to see if they're showing it on their screens. Failing that, go a bit further afield eg one of the bars in JLT or Paddy McGees or Nezeaussi in the downtown area. Time Out Dubai -- online or via the magazine -- will have more complete listings. Good luck! Your brother will definitely be able to watch the game. :)

While collecting things is very sweet, more benefit will come from donating money to reputable agencies eg Save The Children, International Red Cross, MSF etc. It costs a LOT of money to send food/goods overseas and since comms and roads etc are out and will be for some time, the chance of the goods getting to their destination in a timely manner without spoiling, if at all, is slim to none. Not wanting to put a dampener on things, but if you want to help NOW, think money not produce.

If you are Sydney bound, Auburn and Lakemba areas are where you will fit right in. The government provides good public schooling. Like anything, if you want private, you pay for it. As Genkigirl says, encourage your children to assimilate into the lifestyle you have chosen to live in and you will enjoy Australia. Also Greenacre and surrounds. I know: used to live there. There are some local schools which are Muslim-majority in this area, the shops target a Lebanese/Muslim population ... depends on what you're after. That said, this area has a lot of Lebanese there, many of whom are NOT Muslim but are instead, Maronite Catholic. Plus anglo-celtic Aussies and Italians and Greeks and others. It's an okay community, if a tiny bit insular.

Ensure you have the appropriate health insurance: make it 'top' cover, if you can afford it. Seriously. This is probably the most important thing you should do before you travel in the States. PS. It's really stinking/hot in NYC in July. Not much fun if you want to do loads of walking around and seeing the sights. I'm sure you'll have a great time though. Oh, and make sure you check out the factory sales/warehouse offerings. Spend an afternoon shopping for clothes/shoes/etc; you will save heaps on what you pay in Dubai let alone elsewhere. :)

We are looking for something very nice with a view A view of what? Around the Burj area, your best view will be onto the water around the fountains -- so one of the Souk Al Bahar joints -- OR going to a restaurant in the Burj itself. They are all highly rated though quite pricey.

Nice or super super nice? I assume since you will have your teens with you that perhaps it's not that important to go heavy on the romance, so how about one of the restaurants at Souk Al Bahar? Rivington Grill has a good wine list. Book a table outside to watch the fountains. Menu is pretty good as well. Not too expensive (not in the way that Pier Chic and similar offerings might be for a dinner for two). Have fun. . ETA: Riv Grill serves modern Brit food. May I just ask ... does this little girl have a BROTHER? Or several brothers? Or brothers with friends? My big bro was banging together my Barbies and putting my teddies in suggestive positions well before I knew what was what and it was all courtesy of the usual 'experimental' doctors and nurses type stuff in which many children indulge at certain ages. He's five years older than me -- so was 13 to my 8 -- and he did it to tease and make fun and hopefully make me embarrassed. Not that I'm completely sure he knew what he was doing anyway. Children doing this sort of acting out isn't always a sign of abuse. It can sometimes be just a silly older sibling who's playing around. Has this been considered? I don't want to take anything away from the situation -- I do see that many of you have made good points etc etc -- but ... things aren't always what they seem. Good luck. . ETA: This doesn't, I admit, address the lying/manipulation stuff that's going on. But some kids are just bad seeds and to be honest, that sort of behaviour is more prevalent in some than others. Siblings can also be an influence here. :( edited by LadyBee on 23/10/2013

I can't help with the questions on your last post, but perhaps if you have copies of all the paperwork/correspondence to hand -- if you have to exit and haven't had any joy -- that might go some way towards persuading the guys at the gate that you're allowed to leave. Make sure you also have bank statements -- to show you don't owe any money -- and a release letter (or something like it) from your LL to show you're not leaving an apartment with rent due. And DEWA/Du/Etisalat statements too. And anything else of that nature. You really just have to show that you're not absconding. But if you don't owe anything, and can prove it, that's a big part of the battle. Good luck.
