I just want to add: whenever we have friends or family to stay, we provide them with Entertainer vouchers and Metro timetables and taxi numbers and that's pretty much it. We've never had friends/family stay that haven't come laden with duty-free goodies and they've always offered to do a shop or take US out for dinner. We do the same for them aka take them out for a slap-up meal, booze included etc etc ... But given that they are guests, that's only fair. Still, they are saving on a hotel and all the bits and bobs associated with that, so they ALL have certainly contributed to their own holiday by putting into the pot, so to speak, money-wise. I just cannot fathom that there are still people out there who think that it's 'okay' to dump themselves down and take/take/take from their hosts in the most blatant way possible. That's not only idiotic; it's downright selfish. :(

Find new friends. Seriously. Or simply don't allow this bunch of freeloaders to syphon off your hard-earned. I have lived here for some years now and I STILL cannot fathom the number of threads devoted to friends and rellies who suck people dry. What the h3ll is wrong with you people?! Are you women or wusses?! And how on earth did you end up inviting these idiots to your home in the first place?! Jesus wept. I know that -- as Doobers residents -- people on the outside looking in sometimes view us as heavy with cash and possibly willing and able to put on a good show, but OMG ... it's ridiculous how many people take advantage of their friends if EW threads are anything to go by. Grow a spine. Kick these succubi to the curb. It's just not on. It's not. And did I mention you should find some new friends?! Jesus! :(

Honestly, save your money and let your dd draw and paint at home With my first, I brought her to all sorts of classes; art, French at the Alliance Francaise, tennis etc. in retrospect, it was really a waste of money. If she's at school she probably has enough structured classes in a day so just let her express herself with paints & crayons as she wishes. You can get some lovely art books from Usbourne if you're looking for ideas and look up ideas on the net too. Also share with her some books of classic art. Well said. Buy what you can afford watercolour paints and crayon-wise, and let her go nuts. Four years old is a time for play and experimentation and fun and exploration and ... I could go on. Give her a few years to go nuts on her own -- with your help -- before you start regulating her creativity. Fantastic she is showing early interest and talent, but don't put her in a box. And don't regiment her free-flowing arty nature too early. She is a child. Let her enjoy that for just a bit longer. :)

What is acceptable dress and what some workers wear, especially in Dubai, are often two totally different things. In my opinion, for non Muslims, it should be elbow length sleeves and a reasonably high neckline, below the knee skirt length, and not too tight. Suits are fine, skirts or pants as long as they are not really tight. They ARE two different things. Completely different in some cases. Sigh. I have seen all SORTS of 'outfits' being sported by young women which would raise eyebrows even in western society, but they do get away with it. It doesn't help that some companies persist in advertising for FOH staff who are 'attractive' or within a certain age band. It's just asking for trouble or -- in other words -- asking that those who apply outfit themselves in a manner that will be deemed s3xually attractive to visitors to the office. I think that being modestly dressed should be the yardstick here, but if one was to gauge 'typical' dress by observing people coming and going in their lunch hours, one might very well get completely the wrong impression. Sadly.

*Confession* I make my own. But ... what you want is shortcrust pastry. You can buy it in sheet form and press it to fit into a quiche dish -- follow a recipe for the filling -- and take it from there. You will need to 'blind bake' it first though ie par-cook it without filling first. Not difficult though. You may find quiche shells though, in Spinneys freezers or maybe C4? Worth a look. But if that easy route doesn't work: use shortcrust sheets. Still easy. :)

If you and your family travel frequently, I'd say just DO IT. Just because Dubai doesn't have a proper winter doesn't mean we don't get hit by these bugs. I grew up in a country whose experience of 'real' flu was rare, but we still got jabbed every year as a matter of course, if only because we had my grandma living with us (and my dad seemed to pick up bugs of this nature with alarming frequency). Do as you like, obviously, but getting the jab isn't going to hurt you, and it all contributes to herd protection. Especially on planes. ;) PS. Asthmatics are a separate issue btw, but they are a group that should be jabbed automatically, if only because protecting them from the major strains floating around can only *help* them through the more challenging versions of the flu. What people have to remember is that the flu jab only guards against the 'big' ones. There are still lots of little nasties floating around, all variations, and even a flu jab sometimes can't protect against them. I'd prefer to avoid the worst and maybe have to deal with those, than be completely unprotected. In my opinion.

Yes maybe I should go up there and knock on the door. I could maybe ask her if she has recently moved in as I hadn't heard anything from above before. Then I could politely just ask her if she minded taking her shoes off if she gets in late. And then lets go out for a few vinous ;) Good stuff. Of course ... I'd just knock and say 'hi' and do the vino/tea approach and THEN talk about the noise (but that's just me). Don't hit her with a salvo of criticism before you attempt to make acquaintances/friends with her; just be a friendly neighbour. Welcome her to the building, as it were. Get to know her. And THEN hit her with your issues re noise and the rest. Chances are, she'll feel awful about it. But less resistant to adjusting her behaviour if she feels she has a friend downstairs than an enemy. ;)

PS. Chances are: she doesn't even know she's making a racket. Forget what I said about her dealing with noise herself; the flat upstairs from her could be wall-to-wall carpet for all you know, and she doesn't even know she's creating a drama. It's worth attempting the friendly approach first before going in guns blazing which -- if you write a note -- is exactly what it will look like, with apologies. Again, good luck. These things are solvable. :)

Apartment living. It's never fun. May one ask though ... have you ever met? Have you introduced yourself? Do you nod/wave/say 'hi' when you pass in the corridors? Do you even know what she looks like? Harking back to an age when I changed flats like hair colour, I always made an effort to get to know my neighbours be they up, down or next-door. And if I was in this situation now, I'd make a semi-formal friendly approach rather than write a note at first. However kindly you phrase your missive, the chances of it being received in good humour and acted upon accordingly, are slim to none. I'd pop upstairs when you know she's home but not being that noisy, perhaps invite her for a cup of tea/glass of vino depending on her bent, and take it from there. Make friends with her - if you can - and then you can launch into the horrors of close-living in apartment buildings together. Who knows? She may well have the same dramas with the person who lives above *her* ... and you can solve both problems at once. That would be my approach anyway. Good luck! :)

You can still get a 3-4 bedroom in Meadows 9 for that price but the 4 beds are around 250-260K now. The prices are going wild again Our lease is up on 31 Dec in M9. We checked the RERA calculator and the 'range' for four-beds is now 250-300K. Which naturally means LLs will be looking for more, we suspect.

PS. And keep your fluids up. Cranberry is all very well but it only helps alleviate the symptoms; it's no cure. Keep drinking loads of water as well, even if you don't feel like you want to do so. The more fluids you use to flush out your system, the better. :)

Is this a long-term problem or something you are experiencing at the moment? If you do have a Urinary Tract Infection, you will need to be on a course of antibiotics, plus take a powder supplement like URAL. While it's always best to see a doctor first for anything like this, if you're desperate: head to a pharmacy. You can buy antibiotics over the counter and the UTI powders as well. Just ask. Hope you feel better soon.

Good morning, I've done a search online but the only pronunciations I can find are in an American accent with little attention paid to the nuances of the Arabic language. Can anyone direct me to a website where I might listen to the pronunciation of [b'>Al Khwārizmī[/b'>? I need to be able to use this name properly and respectfully in the very near future. Thank you in advance.

Gulp. Just called Aramex and their same-day service is 150dhs for AD and 90dhs for Dubai. Overnight is 40dhs AD and 25-30dhs for Dubai. Probably because we're a 'casual' customer or something. Thanks for your help again though, TB.

Do. Not. Stay. At. The. Hilton. By the way, we actually left the Hilton after one horrid night and drove to the Meridian Al Aqah to complete our mini-break and it's the best thing we ever did. Do be reminded though, that the Meridien is a good hour or so from Fujeirah 'proper' so allow time for that. Enjoy.

I didn't see the original post, but hope that this kit gets a great home. Not for me, sadly. I have two cat-manic dogs, a community full of cat-mad people with their own little darlings, and siamese really do need to be top cat in the house. Would suit someone who can put in the one-on-one time though.

I enjoyed mac'n'cheese occasionally as a kid, and sometimes as an adult ha ha, but I've never had it out of a box. One of the first things I learned to make was a bechamel sauce -- with cheese -- which I'd toss through cooked macaroni and then bake for the final product. The grated cheese sprinkled and golden on top was the best bit. I know people don't have a lot of time on their hands, but this dish is so so easy. Why don't people make it from scratch?

Just really do your research re brands. Strangely enough, I read a report in the Sunday Times discussing the purity of Manuka Honey just two days ago and the opportunity for fraud in this market is unbelievable. Unfortunately, the Times has a pay-wall so you can't read it online, but suffice to say: almost all the world's Manuka honey comes from NZ and they reveal that 1700 tons are produced annually. This goes against the assertion that 1800 tons are sold in the UK each year, and that 10,000 tons are sold worldwide. So just be sure you know what you are buying. Do your research and learn the recommended brands which come with an assured purity factor. And don't pay over the odds for something which isn't Manuka. HTH.

Milk'n'Honey have a range of Manuka honeys and they vary in 'percentage' as to how strong they are. Some of them are practically medicinal; you would NOT spread them on a crumpet. Also very expensive. But very good stuff. . edited by LadyBee on 25/08/2013

Agree with the shampooing-twice gambit, but when you use expensive shampoo, it can get pricey. ;) That said, I recommend Kerastase. I've used it for years -- shampoo and conditioner and occasional leave-in 'treatments' too -- and it's worked like a charm. Don't be fooled into NOT using conditioner; it won't make your hair more oily but will restore the 'good' moisture back into it. PS. I'm not sure how old you are, but changes in environment and increase in age do result in having to adopt a different shampoo schedule. In my 20s, I had really 'greasy' hair and I was washing every day, but now in my 40s? Once a week with no 'oily' issues.

I've had such good luck with them. Disappointing to hear that. Agree. Never had a prob with them, but then: I order online and use Aramex to post goods to me in Doobers. So it's like I'm a UK customer. Because the goods weigh next to nothing, it is therefore pretty cheap. Sorry you had a rotten experience, RuthM. :/

Sadly, the family's gardener left the gate unlocked, so Sheldon has gone for a bit of a stroll. Please please if you see a large tortoise looking a bit lost in the area, post here please. I will update with markings/size as and when I get them. Thanks, everyone. :)

I will never understand why people come here , especially those from Rule of Law countries, and conclude that they are only bound by the laws applying/suited to their beliefs! .. Because they're desperate for the money? Lots of people work as expats all over the world and behave like the rules 'don't apply to them'. They do it in their home countries as well. Way of the world, sadly. A question though: what about for people like flydiver (below) who have live-outs? How do you police their behaviour when they aren't under your roof? It seems to me that a full-time live-out maid can do whatever the heck she wants; what repercussions would there be for her sponsor if she was caught breaking the law in that case?

Ive seen numerous amount of people eating and drinking whilst walking thru the malls, they have to be tourists!!! I avoid going out during daylight hours, and when I do have to venture I do drink water, but this is well away from everyone and no one can see. As for pregnant ladies, I have always understood they are allowed to eat and drink, but again in a dicreet manner. Also I wanted to buy the Quran for a gift and in the shop non muslims are not allowed to touch it, so how is someone allowed to read it, am I being dumb here!!! just a thought. Usually in book stores, the Qurans are locked away behind glass but all other Islamic books are out on the shelves. If you are interest in purchasing a Holy Quran, I am sure if you just tell the sales person which version you want, ie translation etc and they will select it for you and you can purchase it. I am sure every Muslim would be delighted that a western person was interested in ready our holy Quran. If you can't find one, please let me know, I will be more than happy to give you one. *Muses* Mine came installed on my Galaxy Tab. Complete with text/translation and - if I so choose - an audio version. I guess I'm not really touching it so not defiling it. Or something.

Thanks or he link but I hoping to find somewhere open in the day just wanted to chill with a vino somewhere. Thanks anyway! Nowhere to drink during the day in Ramadan, I'm afraid, but plenty of bars in hotels open in the evenings. Many won't have live music or a DJ though, out of respect. Check out listings in Time Out in the week your friends are visiting. FWIW this is my sixth Ramadan. I'm respectful and follow all the rules but no one expects non-Muslims to crawl under a rock for a whole month. So long as you're discreet, there are plenty of things to do, even have a drink if you so choose! As for the Iftar buffets at hotels ... well, I've been to a few and they're completely over-commercialised in my humble opinion. If you want to experience a more authentic Iftar, the one at Sheikh Mohammed's Centre for Cultural Understanding is a good one. Or see if you can rustle up an invitation from a Muslim friend! Much much nicer. :)

Pro-tip: they probably still have shoes on sale. They don't take part in summer surprises, because they don't want to shell for the 'privilege' of getting some signs from the Municipality, but that doesn't mean there aren't bargains to be had during this festive season. ;)

You might try one of the companies that drops by to feed/walk/play with pets when people are away. Homely Pets is one, I think. That said, it could cost the same for this as getting a maid in for two hours. Since it's your first summer, don't forget to leave the air-conditioning on at least in some rooms at a moderate temperature. The humidity here is apt to cause clothes/fabrics to mold otherwise. Personally I would just get a maid in for two hours a week to dust/wipe things down, water your plants, make sure there's no leaks, problems with your residence. I'd be a bit reluctant to leave my place completely unattended for five weeks straight without it being checked on. But that's just me. I did have a friend a few years back whose water pipes burst while she was away. Cue thousands of dhs worth of damage and DEWA bills plus the agony of trying to get everything fixed while she was away. :/

Doof-doof dance music. I download free mixes onto my Pod from my favourite DJs on Soundcloud and take it from there. Mostly 90s stuff, but some new things too. And most of the DJs I 'follow' have a nice mix of dancefloor hits with a bit of jungle/tribal thrown in for good measure. Only thing that keeps me treadling (on the 'mill, that is!).

He's simply been told that's the time it takes. Initially, he is setting up in JLT -- cheaper rent for the parent company -- and that's what the JLT peeps have told him. Back in 08, he set up in Internet City for another company -- and apart from being given a bit of a run-around by some man-on-the-make who told him there was no space available (turned out that was a bit of a porky!) it took nowhere near as long.
