DH is in the process of setting up a UAE offshoot of a UK company. All his ducks are in a row, so to speak, but he's been told SIX WEEKS at the earliest until a trade license can be issued. This time frame seems ... excessive. Does anyone know if there is a 'middle man' type company which can expedite the procedure? Money no object. Cheers.

Thanks for the replies ladies. I appreciate your insight. I'd usually throw it at my place, however we have a large family of visitors, and my house looks like a bomb has hit it. I'll go ahead and have it at hers. I don't mind doing/paying for the catering, I'm just worried where every one will sit/fit. Would be much more comfortable doing this and asking for help if I knew anyone on the list. I'm sure it will be fine though. Thanks again :) Even if you don't know anyone on 'the list', this is a great way to touch base before the festivities. I would -- if it were me -- contact everyone and ask them to contribute. Only the weirdos won't get into the spirit of the occasion, promise. And this way, you will sort of 'know' people before they arrive. It's a way for them to help -- most people like to do that, seriously! -- and it becomes an event where everyone is helping and involved rather than something to which people have been invited and they just let the party roll over them. I have organised three baby showers in the past, and I was phoning people I didn't know for help and it was so lovely how everyone wanted to pitch in and feel like they were a part of it. There were the 'oohs' and 'aahs' over somebody's fabulous baby-styled cupcakes, and more for the decorations someone else had contributed ... this should be a group thing -- if you're having it at home with strangers -- and I reiterate, it's a great way to get to know the guests and make them feel involved. Have fun. Don't worry about the size of your venue. And let people feel like they're a part of it too. You will have a ball. :)

I've been to other showers and I'd say they are nicer in someone's home. Why not gather 3 or 4 of the other ladies and make all the food yourselves and host in someone's home. One lady can be in charge of drinks, 2 make food and sandwiches and one make the cake. You can buy nice decorations and make pretty favours quite cheaply with bags from dragonmart, pink jellybeans etc. Absolutely agree with this. To the OP: is there someone among the 28 who might have a bigger space in which to host this shindig? Seriously, it is really just so much nicer to have it at home. Everyone can relax, people who are 'indulging' in a bubbly or two can do so, you can make it a group event so that everyone brings a plate of something lovely to eat, you can play games (if you're into that sort of baby shower thing!). The best baby showers I've attended have been 'at home' and they have been intimate, friendly, caring events. And so much more personal than having it at a hotel/venue. And PS. Even alleged 'non-cooks' can get into the spirit of the occasion by bringing along something to eat. There are loads of websites with recipes etc which will furnish your needs for baby-shower-appropriate food. But whatever you decide, enjoy. :)

Woof Groomers in Al Quoz. Great place. May already be booked up though because they're very popular, but since they've just purchased a new bigger building, you might be in luck. No cages, doggy daycare all day; it's brilliant. Been going there for years for grooming and holiday breaks. :)

Wow. I didn't know shampoo could be made with bicarb! I use bicarb every month or so to give my hair a 'strip' - I use equal parts milk/bicarb - in order to divest it of the shampoo/conditioner build-up. Didn't know about this though.

To LadyBee Thank you i have written down the details and i also am shocked by some of the prices hence trying to find a good hairdresser with reasonable prices as i have my hair done every 5 weeks(as i get grey roots!) and it becomes very expensive. Yup, I hear you. I'm a card-carrying member of the silver thread brigade, so also need regular assistance. Katie's great - very no-nonsense - and she will adjust what she does each appointment so my hair still looks great eg sometimes I don't need the all-over colour, just the highlights and other times, just the all-over colour will do because otherwise extra highlights will be too brassy. She always gets it right. And I end up paying less as a result. She never forces me into anything. Oh ... and some of the girls who do the shampoo-ing etc have the best massage hands in the business! LOL!

Our Furbaby always goes to Woof! in Al Quoz. They've recently moved to a bigger premises and its fab! All the guys and girls there are fantastic and really take great care of all the pooches. I love the fact that when boarding there, they get to spend the entire day in Day Care playing with all the other pooches, rather than being stuck in their kennel and only being let out for a couple of hours a day. Our girl always has a fab time and they send us photos every couple of days so we can see how she's getting on. Wouldn't send ours anywhere else. Go have a look around and see what you think! :) Their number is: 050 378 7486 Ditto. Two solid thumbs up for Woof. We wouldn't go anywhere else. The daycare area is fantastic, agreed, and I love how the dogs are put into cubicles, not cages. They also throw in a free groom so your pet is gorgeous when you collect him/her! :)

Usually a full mesh, cut, blow-dry and a treatment. I usually end up buy some products too, so it's probably not exactly AED1300. I paid similar elsewhere and had my hair ruined, still trying to repair it. Gosh. I'm speechless. I am without speech. :(

Hi Ladybee Sorry to hijack but i have just moved to Tecom and need a hairdresser is it a salon can you possible tell me who you go to. No problem if you dont wish to. thanks. As for tipping it depends on how good the service was. I can see you already have been given a name/number for somebody - I don't know who though lol - and of course, I'm happy to share my stylist's name. She works out of the Robert Alexander Salon (04 439 3537) in Media Rotana, Tecom (you can valet your car for free) and her name is Katie. She's Australian, a very good colourist, and I've been going to her for years (she used to work at Roots Jumeirah).

What about hairdressers ? If you go to Salon Ink, for example, and it cost's AED1300, do you tip 10%, 130 AED seems a LOT to me. Are you KIDDING me ?!?! Sorry, but I have to ask; what are you paying for that costs this much money? I'm seriously curious. I get full-colour plus three-colour foil highlights and trim and blowdry. I also have long hair. And it doesn't even cost half that. And that's with a western hairdresser in Tecom.

Debenhams at MoE. The best brand I've bought/been given over the years is Christy, which makes fantastically absorbent towels in a range of sizes/colours. I swear by them because they last and last as well. As an aside, I stupidly bought some Jasper Conran towels as a change on sale last year; they appeared to be thick, fluffy and good quality. However, even after a gazillion washes they still have that yucky 'wet' feel when you dry yourself, like you're not getting dry properly. Awful. And they lose a LOT of fluff in the wash as well. What a waste of money. Back to Christy from now on. :)

I'm not sure whether you're asking for yourself, but rather than try to find an okay hotel which accepts pets, what about booking the pet into a doggy daycare and overnight stay place for the duration? In that way, the pet will get to play loads with similar-sized doggies, have barrels-worth of fun, be tired and happy, have their own little holiday ... it's worth considering anyway. :) PS. I recommend WOOF in Quoz. Amazing set up and they take care to keep the little ones and bigger ones in separate play spaces, which I always think is good. When I leave my pair there, I also take their own food. They share a cubicle (no cages at WOOF'> with cushions and toys and everything. They love it. And we get photos of their 'holiday' every day they are away.

Indeed. I buy mine at duty free when I can, but naturally only if the style I'm after is available. Otherwise, yes, London all the way. The last bag I bought was in Bond Street. It was 200 quid less than the MoE store was asking for it. Sigh.

Only my lack of extra arms prevented me from buying more! They're upstairs in great long rows just begging for a home lol. Just check the one/s you want to purchase to make sure there are no rough edges and that they're woven properly. The kind of basket that has a handle? I want to makeup some gift baskets, they need to be fairly large as the basket will be for a few people to share. Thanks! I've bought fantastic baskets in a huge range of colours/sizes at the Antiques Museum. Used the small ones for bread baskets, medium ones for gift baskets and the large ones as storage for toys/magazines. They come in round/square/etc ... inexpensive but reasonably well made. http://www.dubai-shopping-secrets.com/antique-museum.html

If you do a search, you will find a LOT of threads discussing good/bad/indifferent agencies for part-time help. What you absolutely must do, once you decide upon an agency, is to insist upon a helper that works best for you. Do NOT put up with someone who doesn't have the requisite amount of English (or experience) with which you feel comfortable. Moreover, DO also ensure that once you have a maid you like, that [i'>you have the same maid every single day of the week[/i'> on which you employ help. In that way, you can develop a relationship with her so that she does things YOUR way, and you can also be assured that you can build trust together. This will also assist you if you want to tip her - on occasion - for a job well done, to ask for any extra special jobs to be done, and so that you and your family get to know her and she gets to know your routine. Having a different person each week is awful; you need regularity, and once you have both established a system together, you need to be able to not worry about this particular part of your life. NB. Despite many (all?) agencies insisting that their employees are experienced, you will have to spend a few weeks training your helper to do things your way. This is par for the course. Just so you know. :)

Didn't even realise there was such a thing.... unless you meant the cr&p sold in containers pertaining to be Parmesan!!!! I've seen that stuff in jars. Shudder. Smells like vomit. But it isn't nuclear-orange like the stuff on Doritos! It's just the sweepings off cheese floors with a bit of anti-caking agent for good luck.

Well, I would personally take this with a grain of salt...who knows what "statistic" this is...maybe the gentleman was overdramatizing. Not that it's not an issue, it probably is, but I seriously doubt it is 80% as stated. I never believe local "stratistics" in any area of life/business and I do not trust local newspapers:-) Fair do's. But in fact, it was a woman who quoted the 80% statistic, and while the article didn't reference the stat', one would hope that this writer/marriage counsellor had sourced this figure from something more official than 'word-of-mouth'. One hopes so anyway. ;)

80% is shockingly high, if true. It is a transitional country and one of the underlying reason is probably the combination of growing independence among the women due to education and exposure to western influence, which when combined with family/culture pressure to marry young, leads to disastrous marriages. Perhaps. But have things, in fact, gone backwards (perhaps due to Western influence)? After all, at least one statement from the article suggests that women rubbed along very well with men for some time, but it is only 'recently' that the separation of s3xes occurred, leading to disparity between couples. To wit: [i'>"Back in the day there was no segregation of men and women like we have today, this is a new social development in our society. Women were an integral part of the community, they would work hard and earn a living, some would have stalls in the markets. There was normal interaction between men and women in the community. Now you have men who don't know how to even speak to woman. How are they supposed to interact with a wife?"[/i'>

Given the huge expense of weddings and dowries, it really makes me so sad that young couples are coming a cropper so early in their marriages. And despite the inducements for Emirati men to marry their countrywomen ... One would think that the incredible support from government/families/society would bolster these marriages but the stats are showing, rather, that these unions are far from successful. :(

No judgment but ... oh heck, I'm seriously not going to be ashamed of being judgy about this. DON'T DO IT! Even if you CAN find this powder-of-the-Underworld, do NOT be putting it on your kids' popcorn. I don't care if YOU indulge in chemical-covered-cr@p courtesy of Doritos: just please please please don't indulge and be an enabler for your kids' drug-addicted yearning for it. There's loads of stuff you can put on popcorn that doesn't include MSG or 'butter-flavoured-flavour' and indulging them in this way is just contributing to the idea that we all need uber-flavours and uber-tastes in order to 'enjoy' something. By all means, the occasional flavoured crisp etc can add spice to the tastebuds. But please don't do it at home. Please. Make home a place where your kids can taste the nuances of flavour. Where they don't have to pack 1000mg of salt onto something in order to *taste* it. Where home food does NOT have to mimic take-out or bought food. Where your kids can actually learn about REAL tastes and learn the differences between them. Sorry for ....... Actually, you know what? I am NOT sorry for soapboxing on this matter. Time was, food 'on the outside' was a treat, a 'something special' and definitely something that couldn't be mimicked at home. And that's how it should be. Don't be the mum/mom who gives her kids treats that they could as easily buy at a cineplex concession stand. Be the person who provides healthful alternatives to all that garbage with TRUE real flavours and healthy home-prepared food. Psst ... As an alternative, may I suggest a bit of REAL grated cheese if they really want that cheesy flavour (and I don't mean pre-grated; I mean grating it yourself). Or perhaps a bit of REAL sea salt and REAL butter. It tastes great. Tell your kids that the Doritos cheese-powder is poison except for very rare occasions. Which it is, by the way.

That is why candidates should do their due dilligence regarding agents here. I for one would be embarrassed if i called a candidate about a role that i knew nothing about If i could not understand it then how could i present this to a potential candidate Of course there are some bad apples ( UAE is full of these people in every industry) however we are not all the same. :-) I'm sure you're not. :) It was frustrating for DH though, esp. in the salary discussions. It wasn't much fun for him - despite DH being able to give examples of similar roles at his level - to be told: "Oh, they'll never pay THAT" and then just ... dismissed out of hand. There seemed to be far too many young recruiters who didn't know enough about his field and pay grades, who were phoning up people like DH and then treating him like cr@p. Good to hear it's not totally an industry-wide problem. ;) ETA: Re candidates doing 'due diligence regarding agents': that's all very well (and DH was only registered with a few agencies) but the phone calls he was getting weren't all from those agencies. He was getting approached by cold-calling/head-hunter types as well, who'd found out he was going to be available or got his details from LinkedIn. There's not much one can do to protect oneself from this sort of thing. :( edited by LadyBee on 20/05/2013

... then you want to use someone who will find you decent, relevant candidates ... With apologies for butting in (and cutting down your quote), this statement is interesting to me because it does seem that there are a lot of recruiters in the UAE who haven't the smallest idea of the roles for which they're recruiting. This was made abundantly clear to DH when he was 'in the market' last year. He did register with a few agencies, but basically, looked to contacts/LinkedIn for real opportunities. This is because every.single.time a recruiter contacted him for a potential role (and it was loads of times), DH would almost have to explain to THEM what the job entailed because they didn't know! They also balked at his salary saying there was 'no chance' the company would pay what he was asking. Fine, but how about asking the company? Why just cut him off without having a talk about it? In one instance, DH knew the company looking for a person to fill a role and KNEW they would pay XXX in salary, but the recruiter refused to countenance discussing it with the company. And then two months later, the COMPANY phoned DH almost begging him to come on board, offering him the moon to do so, and DH was already employed by someone else. Apparently the recruitment firms this company had set to the task hadn't found anyone suitable so the company had to do the recruiting themselves ... ;)

I think I'd look the same whether I was a regular aficionado (or not). They're a holiday treat for me so obviously, I don't have them regularly. Lots of fun, very relaxing, but I'm not sure they *do* much in the grand scheme of things unless you have 'problem skin' and go for special treatments. For me, they're all about the relaxation. I prefer having massages and would choose them over a facial anyday. :)

Personally, I'd just try my luck and label them used. Do you HAVE to put receipts or something on the goods? I don't know what the duty charges are but - I'm Australian btw - I would honestly just pack them up as household goods and send them through. I think the 'year' tariff is to stop absolutely-brand-new stuff being brought into the country. With goods which are nudging that, they're not going to be too fussed, esp. if they're obviously looking like used items. If that makes sense. Disclaimer: I'm not a worrywort about this sort of stuff though - others may have evidence that they've been picked up on importing things like this - but really, if the fridge/TVs are in with all your other used household items, you should be fine. Good luck. And don't worry. :) PS. By the time your stuff clears customs, it may be over a year old anyway! :D

I had the same episodes twice with my daughter, [b'>both times these were Arab people trying to take her pictures[/b'>, the first asked for my permission, the second didn't, but I refused both of them. It doesn't matter whether their intentions were innocent or not, these pictures would end up on facebook or on some other social network website, where one has no control over what kind of people see them. *Muses* I do think it odd that with all the information which abounds on what is considered appropriate behaviour in the UAE, that writ large is generally a stern warning about taking pictures of locals as in: DON'T DO IT. There should, on the other hand, be a warning to not take pictures of [i'>anyone [/i'>without their permission. Just why it's somehow okay for children, particularly of the blond/blue-eyed sort, to be photographed by strangers and yet no-one should take photographs of traditionally-dressed residents really warrants discussion. No offence intended. I just think no one should take photos of anyone unless they're friends/family or - on very rare occasions - when one has the express permission of the person being photographed (or in the case of children, their parent/guardian).

Thanks. I'm not techy at all.... I had a quick google and it looks as if it is €4.95 a month to get smart dns. Is that correct? DH says we pay 9.95 a month because the 4.95 offer has limitations as to how much you can download and we use it a LOT. For that, we get the VPN and smart DNS.

Pipititimous - could you explain what a smart dns is please. We have a VPN but it buffers so badly we've almost given up watching anything. I want to watch the Apprentice lol. Thought I'd hop in ... ;) This is a definition of smart DNS: http://www.whatishowto.net/2012/08/04/what-is-smart-dns/ It was introduced on our VPN service about a year ago and it's BRILLIANT. You may find it's a feature on yours if you go to the homepage/set-up of your own VPN? It was a bit fiddly to install allegedly - DH did it - but it means we can now watch a lot of stuff 'live' without turning on the VPN. Not so good for live sports, but talking heads/docos/etc it works fine. If you do a search for 'smart DNS', our VPN provider is the first one listed. Just in case you're on the hunt for a better VPN service (we've used this one for years; works really well). HTH.

Do any of these Italians serve p@rk ladies?? Awkward husband alert:) BiCE (bee-chay) at the Hilton Jumeirah does. This is our favourite Italian restaurant. Great wine list, fantastic service. Good food. You can eat in the main restaurant downstairs at the end of the lobby or choose from a limited (but still extensive) menu at the top of the hotel in SkyBar (gorgeous views, very quiet; great place to relax/enjoy the food etc).

Even if a shop does decide to stock the 2013 Lions gear, you're still probably better off getting it from the UK and shop/shipping it over. The price for rugby shirts here is pretty overpriced. http://www.sportsdirect.com/adidas-british-and-irish-lions-rugby-shirt-2013-381001 PS. HSBC is a major sponsor. Maybe you could ask them?! :D
