I ordered two peppermint iced teas at Starbucks, but stressed that they should not put syrup in them. A couple of minutes later collected my iced teas, laced with syrup. When I asked why he's put syrup in them despite my asking that he now, he replied, 'I know maam but tea without syrup is not good'. FFx I went to a coffee/cake bakery and asked for an americano but with less water (i like a strong black coffee but not expresso) and no milk. I am served a milky cappuccino, I tell the waiter I asked for an americano, his reply was yes, I know but you are British and you like milky coffee! I had to explain that I am not British and even if i was, I want what I ordered. Never been back.

We have a joint account and our LL (professional LL has lots of properties) asked who had signed the cheques and and when I said I had, he asked that DH rewrite and sign them as the bank is more likely to return a cheque (for signature anomalies) written by the secondary account holder than the primary. Very frustrating.

i know you would prefer government jobs due to their hours but my DH works for the government and there is no guarantee he is out by 2.30pm. I would say days he gets out by 4pm are few and far between. They also start at 7.30am so not good for schools starting times. School fees in his section of government do not pay schools fees until a certain level. Other government departments might be different but I don't want you going in thinking if will all be perfect if you get a government job. He got the job because he knew someone working there and more importantly, they needed his skill set.

He might be trying to tell you he is giving 90 days notice that it will go up and he will inform you of the exact amount on the day depending on what the rent calculator says. Our commercial landlord said this so I called RERA and they said the exact amount has to be stated or no increase on the 90 day notice. They said it is the same for commercial and residential.

Thanks Ladybirdsarethebest I will give them another chance and top up that way or switch to Early Bird. We like their water and the fact the water bottles aren't reused (and they do say they recycle them) and they don't leak either, but they have been very unreliable with deliveries over the past year, and when I call the call center to inquire there is always a new rule or change of software or sthg happening/great excuse. I have so nearly switched over the last year as well. It seems to be much better now, they just assume I need 2 bottles every week and I call them every fortnight for them to deliver fruit juice at the same time now.

If its the same company as I think, I have been paying this way for last month. I ran out of credit and they delivered, zero'd out my account and when I topped up the following week the amount due was deducted. You don't have to pay the amounts they suggest (AED 150 or AED 400) its just with those amounts you get 'free' money on your i-cash account.

and empower / and enoc / and adnoc / and the hotels and and and ..... and ..... the problem is that school is the most costly as it's such a large sum for us to pick up - 2% is a substantial add on. If I take Grade 7 @ one of the schools... school fee is approx. 60,000.... there are 200 students - annual revenue for grade 7 is 12 Million. They will collect an additional 240,000 AED in admin fees from Grade 7 alone if we assume that every body pays with credit card. Multiply that by 7 for each grade offered in the school - and the total collected for admin fees is 1.7 Million AED. Are they for real...... But the schools are not keeping (all) this money, the banks charge up to 2% for the merchants/schools to offer this service. I agree they shouldn't pass it on but all that will happen is that the schools/petrol stations etc. refuse to take cards at all. For years you couldn't use cards at petrol stations, its only in the last couple of years they have started accepting them again.

I wonder if this means DEWA will stop charging 2% on bill payments made by credit card too. Not holding my breath on that one! Do they? Yes, They did the last time I used a credit card to pay my bill. I've just always paid by CC via my phone and never been charged extra. Strange!! I paid in person and it was written on the wall over the payment counter that there is a 2% fee for CC payments, maybe over the phone is different. I think if you pay online there is no charge. edited by Ladybirdsarethebest on 08/05/2014

Ours is a small compound with only 6 villas, we pay AED 100,000 for 3 beds, very small garden but a shared pool (our priority over a garden). Others nearby are AED 185,000 for 4 beds but a big garden and pool. We are near the small Spinneys/Emirates British Nursery,. Very little aircraft sound. You are best driving around, we found ours by accident. The landlord has several compounds and the sign had been put on the wrong compound. Ours wasn't on Dubizzle or any other website.

Depends on what time you are trying to get out of Mirdif, at 7.15 its busy as you are out with all the school traffic but its not that difficult. It will (hopefully) improve once all the road widening has finished. We have always been in compounds, been in Mirdif for 12 years and wouldn't live anywhere else.

Don''t know about Uber, we use Careem a lot. If you book it via the App then you get live tracking as to where your driver is. You get a text message when he is outside. You get a thank you message and confirmation of the cost afterwards. We always use a credit card. You do have to register before hand but its not long or hard.

It depends on how much cake you want and how much decoration. I don't make cakes professionally but do enjoy making and decorating. I recently did my DDs birthday cake, it was an eye opener as to the cost of making and decorating a cake. It was 2 tiers. the bottom one 8" and the top one 5". It probably cost me the best part of AED 250 for ingredients as I made my own marshmallow fondant and used proper vanilla pods. It took a couple of hours of them being in the oven (baked separately as they were different sizes), butter icing (and I didn't put a liberal amount in) and then fondant. It took me a lot of hours to make the fondant, roll it out, cover the cake and then make decorations to decorate it. After making it AED 700 doesn't sound bad. edited by Ladybirdsarethebest on 06/05/2014

That sounds awful, nothing like upsetting their future clients! Why not try one of the mobile hairdressers, i use Hazel (search for her name on here and her mobile number comes up) or some people recommend Maureen. They will have time (Hazel does) to sit with your daughter and you to discuss what you want and how they can make her hair lovely again.

It is very frustrating, we can only ever find them in ACE or C4. Each and every time I have bought them in C4 half the capsules don't pierce on the bottom so end up chucking them so I refuse to buy them there. You can get them online from Dolce Gusto so I might try this way. They also have flavours I haven't seen elsewhere.

Me neither. If we have to be informed before the 90 day point of any rent increase, this just makes a mockery of the whole thing. Our LL sent us a letter saying that the rent would increae in line with the calculator. I think he was hoping it would increase by more than 10% in those 90 days. We still can't get a figure from the calculator and it's due for renewal next month !!! We had this with our commercial rent, we were told that if was no increase mentioned at the 90 day point, the LL cannot increase it. We gave him the cheques based on the amount due on the contact (he had put it up 5%), he made a small fuss then accepted it. We were also told the same applies to residential rents. edited by Ladybirdsarethebest on 22/04/2014

Really sick of buying tampered products, its only a few dirhams product I threw in the bin, but now have to go out again for more toothpaste! ( I hear you. I learned the hard way about tampered products when I bought a pack of tampons only to discover that a quarter were missing! What the ...?! That's why I always take a pack from the back of the shelves and squeeze the box to make sure it's full. What is also worrisome is that I can't imagine some poor woman (or staff member) being that desperate that she has to steal from the box rather than just purchase the goods to sort herself out. What gets me is that back home, these boxes -- being 'sanitary products' -- would have a proper wide sticky seal on them so they couldn't be opened/touched, but out here, that doesn't seem to be the case. Annoying and ... unsettling as well. :( edited by LadyBee on 06/04/2014 Yes agree about the need for proper seals on products, tampering is rampant here. And watch out for lipsticks too, so many times I have bought lipsticks that appear sealed with a bit of sticky tape around the tube and found them used. It has happened three times in Boots and several times in Lifestyle and Beauty Bay too recently and there is no exchange on cosmetics. Now I only buy lipsticks with proper factory perforated seals. edited by Di@DXB on 06/04/2014 I have seen the assistants in the Lifestyle shop take the sticky tape off lipstick, let the customer try it and when the customer doesn't want it, put some sticky tape back on and return it to the shelf. If the Philipinos Sanddunes mentions really earn only 1000 dhs a month, they will never be able to return to Dubai after their annal leave. The Philippine government will not give them an exit permit from Philipines unless they have a contract stating they earn 1500 dhs minimum. From what my maid tells me, the contract says AED 1,500 but then they have AED 500 deducted for board, food and anything else so that they only get AED 1,000. They then still have to pay for their own food. MIne gets AED 1,500 but she has just started and food and phone credit is in addition. She also gets paid extra if we ask her to babysit on a Friday. It will go up a little soon as DH and I have both had salary increases.
