Here's a link to the Legal FAQs about Employment that appears in Gulf News. The first Q & A might clear things up a bit. It's from Dec last year: http://gulfnews.com/uaessentials/ask-the-law/employment/labour-law-you-must-serve-your-notice-period-1.1263729 I think you should try and negotiate though. Good luck!

There are two gurudwaras, the larger one being the one near/in Jebel Ali. This is their website & the link has the contact details http://gurudwaradubai.com/contact-us.php The smaller one is located in Bur Dubai, this could be closer for her from Sharjah. It's above the Hindu temple, near the parking area of Dubai Museum.

Hi Lentil2014 , I've recently purchased a Kit for Kids (http://www.kitforkidsbaby.com/) cot mattress from Babyshop. Although the mattress says 'Made in the U.A.E' with a local address for sales contacts, the label does have a 'Mattress complies with BS-1877-xyz' code.

Pansy, if you are getting Vanish (the one for whites) try pre-soaking it in warm water overnight & then washing it as usual. I've done the overnight soak for faded whites & it's worked like a charm. Also, I'm not sure, but I think Vanish can't be used on silk & certain fabrics; you might want to check that out before buying as well. Good luck!

Have you tried getting some boric acid/borax or some DIY stuff? While most of the pest control companies say the fumes don't linger & you need only a few hours before moving back in, none of them will guarantee it is safe. I had pest control come over sometime early on in my pregnancy & they said 24 hours...but I stayed away for quite a few days as my husband felt there was still quite an odor for a few days. Didn't want to risk it.This wasn't for roaches so I do not know if they would be using similar chemicals. I do know from pest control in the office that there is some sort of localized gel applicators & gel that is used for cockroaches. That definitely did not have any fumes/smell.

sci-fi movies & Bollywood? There aren't many but if you come across any, steer clear of it! ;) Bollywood & Indian Cinema are completely different; the following list & the one given by HorizonMum2 are strictly Bollywood watches. If you're looking for sweeping, period romantic dramas give Devdas & Jodha Akbar a try. Regular romance & fun would be Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara, etc The list HorizonMum2 has shared is some of the better stuff from Bollywood ;) Most of the free streaming sites are absolute c***, so are the subtitles. I know of a streaming site with HD videos but it's by a production/distribution company Eros, & they have only movies they have licenses for so quite a limited collection of Bollywood & Tamil movies. They have a free version you can sign up for (I think). Not too sure if it's only paid...but check it out at erosnow.com

Hmm you're right...the 'Your Profile' tab is available only on the home page after you log in. Once you navigate away from that page there's no way to go back to that page or those specific tab options. Ideally there should be some way to access those options or at least user account details from anywhere.

marytodd is right about Daman & medcare. Depending on how far along you are, you could check with them.Daman covers in-patient after 6 months, out-patient starts immediately. Your partner will have to sign up for Daman as well though. When I inquired with them, based on our age group & other stuff, we were quoted around 16k for the bronze plan & around 20k for the silver plan (both amounts for the two of us). Not sure of the exact amounts but I'm pretty sure it was around these figures. <em>edited by leahgibbs527 on 07/05/2014</em>

I just logged out and thumbed down my own post...and realized it does count. The thumbs down was still there when I refreshed the page & logged back in. Not only that, you can't change a thumb up/down. It's a serious commitment apparently. :/ Wonder if all this is to bring in a 'social media' feel to the forum?

OK, so he's basically proven that she's had a lucky escape. This guy is getting his kick out of having some sort of power over her...which she feeds by responding to his threats and agreeing to call him & soothe his ego. She needs to: 1) Woman up, and inform people who matter about the existence of the pictures & discuss the situation thoroughly with them. She needs to be prepared for some judgement on her judgement, and perhaps distressing conversations. But in the end these will be the ones to rally around her so she HAS to be open with them and go through the embarrassment. She has to choose between her parents & loved ones finding out from her or, in a worst case scenario if the nutter does manage to publicize the pix, from others. 2)She needs to give the ex one last call to calmly explain why she is moving on and why she cannot continue any relationship with him. If he brings up the pictures tell her not to react in a distressed or desperate manner. Tell her to tell him that she trusted him with those pictures when they were together & she still does. Using them to shame her wouldn't work anymore as she has moved on and is ready to face the the reality of their former relationship. 3)She then needs to go cold turkey and drop all contact with him. If he texts/mails her with threats she SHOULD NOT respond. 4) she has to enable facebook settings that do not allow her to be tagged in pictures without her approval (Timeline Review). Change all public settings, unfriend/block him, change email passwords as well. Also, if he is creating profiles in her name & using these pix of hers, how is she getting to know about them? Does he inform her? In that case report it to Facebook each time but do not respond to him. Unless he is sending mass mails to all her contacts informing them of the presence of these FB account, it's just her that is seeing the pix & knows it is about. Even if he is informing all & sundry, how many times do you think can he do the same thing with the same pics before even other people realize he is a wacko & side with your friend? 5) If he does publish the pics, people who matter would know the truth. Others who may see the pics and contact her need to be told he is an abusive ex who is photoshopping her pix (apartment or not...photoshop does wonders!) All this is easier said than done, but she has to do it. The best solution is to take away the source of his power- your friend's shame/embarrassment/desperation. The initial fallout will be difficult but worth it in the long run. Other potential solutions: 1)Hire an assassin to make him mysteriously disappear 2)Continue playing into his hands & wait for him to get over her (which may or may not happen) once he finds a new victim...er...girlfriend.

Hi Bips, When did they 'discontinue' the product? Have you tried checking with their customer support & website whether this is actually the case? There are a couple of places you can try registering a complaint: http://www.ia.gov.ae/en/Pages/default.aspx & https://www.eclaimlink.ae/default.aspx. Avicii is not a singer and hasn't sung any songs yet. He is a DJ and producer, like David Guetta, who collaborates with artists. Only difference is he doesn't credit the artists on his records or websites unlike Guetta. Avicii composes & mixes great songs & uses lesser known artists who are talented for the vocals( & for some reason seem to be ok with not having their names 'featured' anywhere; you actually have to google for the artist names for each song). <em>edited by leahgibbs527 on 31/03/2014</em>

And yes, it takes away the 'newness' of it :( I once experienced something similar to what you did Gorobattie (perhaps a tad worse) and reacted in a similar manner...to no avail. Highly mistrustful of clothing stores & the staff since then ...

Do not drink unpasteurized milk if you are pregnant. Raw milk is safe if you can be sure of the source and that it is clean raw milk. Pasteurization works by flash-boiling& cooling the milk at really high temperatures and filtering microbes that spoil milk and cause diseases like tuberculosis. There's a lot of debate about how nutritious pasteurization and whether the benefits are over hyped. The naysayers say that a lot of calcium is destroyed. Probably the flash boiling/cooling breaks down the milk and changes the taste vs raw milk?

Which direction are you coming from? If you are coming from SZR Dubai side, take exit 32 and follow all the signs to JLT and then to Al Sarayat Rd. This is the one-way road which runs around Clusters Y,V, W and leads to the park. The park is located just past Cluster W and the Carrefour Express, and is opposite a Damas building.

Yup, I had them too early on in the first trimester. I'm now in my second trimester and they seem to have disappeared. I thought mine were triggered by the drastic change in my eating and sleeping pattern as I had pretty bad 'morning' sickness.Drinking lots n lots of water and eating around 6 small meals a day seemed to help me. I remember reading it could be something to do with low blood sugar. Hang in there! It should get better soon...

ExpatMy, don't stress...the lump is probably nothing. Hopefully you will know for sure soon. And yes, I too get the feeling that the doctors here take things a little too casually. Of course, I'm a FTM so maybe a little more wound up about this, but I'm now 21 weeks & was recently told I need to see an endocrinologist for a possible thyroid problem. My blood test were taken a month or so before the appointment where I was told my thyroid levels are a little on the higher side. What concerns me is I had clearly indicated that I have a family history with thyroid at the very first appointment & my morning sickness was pretty bad. I lost 5 kilos in my 3rd & 4th month (maybe my doc has seen worse & wanted to wait it out?)...all of which according to a relative who has studied medicine, should have made them check my thyroid levels much earlier. I just felt the doc could have informed me earlier instead of waiting for a whole month. I tried looking up info on thyroid levels and when tests are carried out but didn't get anywhere. Anyway, doc didn't seem too worried but then I wouldn't know if she was worried either.Well, have to see what the endocrinologist thinks now; hopefully if I need medication I'm not starting it too late :( Anyone here developed thyroid issues during pregnancy? When is it usually diagnosed & when does the medication usually start? CurlyOB , Ouch!! That sounds like a really nasty fall. I would have been scared witless. I keep tripping on nothing myself. I'm the kind of person who loses balance when I turn my head quickly as I'm walking :D Hope you are doing ok. <em>edited by leahgibbs527 on 06/03/2014</em>

I don't really how this will pan out but I'm kind of expecting a guilty verdict. I hope he didn't do it intentionally :( I do not know what the outcome of the trial will be and I do think people should be given the benefit of doubt( innocent until proven guilty and all that) but based on the multiple reports and articles following the incident it doesn't look like it was an accident. There are two many things wrong with his story of 'having heard a noise' and 'thought it was an intruder' story. Especially for someone who lived in a gated community with dogs, armed security and safety measures , it is surprising he did not think to check where his girlfriend was (she was sleeping at Oscar's place that night) before moving some 20 feet towards the source of the noise & then shooting through a closed bathroom door. I am aware I'm not really qualified to judge him in any way, and I could be wrong but my thoughts based on all the stuff I've come across is that it wasn't accident. Could be wrong of course. Hope it's a fair trial and they get the outcome right.

Hey, not sure if you're still looking for ideas but the only thing that comes to mind is one of those sheikh & sheikhas bobbleheads that you see in souveneir shops. The are similar to these salt n pepper shakers https://jenniferdeppeparker.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/sheikh_sheikhas_saltshakers__dubai_signage.jpg?w=600&h=383. I know they aren't a UAE product per se, but Patchi chocolates are Lebanese( and yummy!) and you don't have any Patchi stores in the USA. So maybe a box of Patchi chocolates? Alternatively, if you do have the time to go to Global Village you can pick up a lot of trinkets from some of the stalls. Hope this helps. Good luck! :)

What browser are you using? After you log out from Facebook, if you are using Chrome, you can go to Settings &gt; Advanced &gt;Passwords and forms &gt; Manage saved passwords and remove the entry for Facebook. Safari and other browsers would have a similar option in the settings/preferences. Like Geordie expat said, the little box was probably selected by default sometime...and your password would have been stored in the browser that one time. <em>edited by leahgibbs527 on 27/02/2014</em>

OK so we just found out yesterday we are having a boy...and that silly Chinese calendar predicted a girl! I didn't have any gut feelings about the gender really, so it feels nice to know for sure. And my little boy was was giving the radiologist quite the hard time during the scan, with her clucking quite a few times in annoyance. He kept rolling away from the probe and turning in every direction :D mumofmoo, I paid close attention to it all through and my nose is still the same size , so maybe there's something in that little tale:) Hmm the Bazaar doesn't sound liek what I imagined it to be, but maybe I will give it a look-see next month. ExpatMy , this is my first time and I really don't know what to expect. I'm reading up on natural birthing and hoping things go smoothly, but tbh I'm not really worrying about c-secs much. I'm not even sure if I will be able to tell if the doc is unnecessarily pushing for a c-sec when I'm in labor. I mean I do keep hearing how most hospitals here seem to push for c-secs/induction but there are quite a few natural birth stories here too. In fact, I think there was a thread here a couple of days ago where most of the women had natural births without epidurals. Sounds like the government hospitals and City hospital are pro-natural. I'm seeing a doc at a private hospital and haven't broached the subject yet. Not sure if it's too early....wonder when's the best time to start discussing this with the doc. <em>edited by leahgibbs527 on 25/02/2014</em>

Super curious about it :) I've heard all kinds of old wive's tales about the gender so I can't wait to find out. Funniest one I've heard is if your nose swells during pregnancy it means you are having a girl :D Also, anyone ever been to the Baby Bazaar they hold at Times Square?

Dusha, your thought is admirable, and it is always refreshing to see people who take some time out for those less fortunate. But may I ask you something? I am not assuming that when you said 'celebrate' you meant have a big ol' party with a cake and a 'Happy Birthday' song, but that you meant you wished to share your boys special day with children at the orphange/special care centres. If you are allowed access to one of these institutions, I really hope you mean to spend time with the kids there, and help with any supplies/activities they may need, as opposed to throwing a party for your son, when the kids there probably do not know when their birthdays are or do not know what it's like to have a party thrown every year by loved ones. I apologize for any incorrect assumptions on my part as your post is brief, but it is just a thought/query I should put out there. leahgibbs527 so sweet of you to share your ideas. Thanks leahgibbs527. These days I am too thinking too much how should I do this. I really don't want to make any of them feel bad. I want to shower them in happiness only. I have my parents, in lows and some close family friends who would love to join us. But I decided not to go with anybody other than my husband and the baby. Will not sing or do anything like that. But definitely give them useful gifts and things That really is a lovely gesture on your part, and I'm sure both your son and the kids there will have a wonderful time interacting:) Also, I wish your little boy a very happy and fulfilling birthday!

Hello ladies, So is anyone trying out Hypnobirthing or attending classes or such here? Anyone with any experience or any interesting hypnobirthing stories from friends? I've just started with the Hypnobirthing book by Marie F Mongan and find it an interesting concept. Although I have to say, I'm unsure of how effective the technique would be in my case, given I'm generally a panicker:) Just wanted to know if anyone else is looking at hypnobirthing as an option or even any other birthing techniques. <em>edited by leahgibbs527 on 09/02/2014</em>

Hi everyone! First of all congratulations to all of you pregnant! I am Due around July 20th, at the moment I am 11 weeks pregnant with twins! This is my first pregnancy and a new world is opening up for me. In the first weeks of the pregnancy I was hit hard by all day """"morning"""" sickness and constant nausea and fatigue, but thanks to some good anti nausea meds I am getting better and try to get healthier too. Isn`t it funny all the food aversions and cravings? Anyway, we just had our scan again on the 11 week mark and both of the babies are doing really well...and growing as they should. It is amazing to hear those heartbeats. We are also looking like most of you for a good OB/hospital who can take us under their wing and will take me all the way through. Just hard to pick! I also had contact with Dr. George from Genesis in healthcare city and he is specialized in complicated pregnancies and does even do deliveries. Soon we will see him, cause will do the NT scan at his clinic. I would love to meet up with you ladies! Check your dates again with a Dr - I am 13 weeks and due 7 August so you are either 15 weeks or due later than you think - Oh, unless you have booked a c section for a few weeks early than you EDD I cant recommend Dr Geaorge enough, he is just wonderful and kind. I didnt deliver with him but he is just a lovely man - I see him at Genesis clinic for my scans Good luck with twins!!! edited by mumofmoo on 02/02/2014 Congrats on the twins Cootje! Hope you feel better soon. So far I've had only food aversions (no cravings at all), especially proteins and dairy. I sometimes wonder if I'll ever be able to look at a juicy burger the same way again Also, I second mumofmoo on getting your dates checked. I'm 17 weeks along and my EDD is July 11.

Hi ladies, How is everyone holding up? Anyone still got nausea/sickness? I do :( I'm on meds for them and coping much better, although I worry about having to take them for a long time. Hey szabme,The DSF sale is going on and they've got a lot of stuff on sale at most of the baby & maternity shops I've been to. Great time to stock up on the maternity clothes! Destination Maternity has some really nice stuff for the moms. Mamas & Papas in Dubai Mall has great baby stuff too. And Babyshop seems to have the cheapest baby stuff and furniture, although I'm not too sure about the quality cos I have no experience buying stuff from there...yet :)

Hello ladies! First timer here...both to the the forum & motherhood! Really excited & curious as well about the whole journey ahead :) Quick question though...anyone having trouble sleeping? I've been sleepless all of my 3rd month apart from the few hours I do manage to doze off at night. Sleep is disturbed & erratic involving lots of tossing and turning, and I'm exhausted through the day, especially in office. It's getting a bit better now; I seem to sleep till sometime in the early am, say around 2am or 3am after which I'm back to tossing & turning. Phew! Read some forms of insomnia is actually a pregnancy thing, just wanted to if any of you ladies are going through the same thing? If so, any helpful suggestions? :)
