He went to nursery in uk for 7 months so he may have built up immunity but I know what you mean. He will be going to inspire nursery and I'm at JESS Jumeirah so not too far from each other. Looks like DH will have to look after him if he's sick as he can rearrange his weekend days. Failing that ill have to use ad hoc service which will cost fortune!

Thanks everyone. Not got anything in place in case he is sick. Would just take unpaid leave I think or is that not the done thing in Dubai? How accommodating are employers if your children are Ill? Just found a concierge service called assist that provide ad hoc services such as school drop off, maid etc if needed. Just asked them for quote. Fingers crossed

Thanks london lady but worried about asking when it's a new job. I'm sure they'll be accommodating in a couple of instances but can't imagine they'll be happy if I'm late for work regularly. A maid woud be no good as she would need to drive ds to nursery 10 mins away :-(

I've looked at a couple of nurseries in Dubai and they are really structured with the children not getting much chance to just play. Coming from an education background in early years I need a nursery for my 18 month old that just allows learning through play with lots of free flow activities and a tiny bit of structure. I don't want to put him in a Montessori as the natural progression is to go to a Montessori school which I'm not keen on. My one have any suggestions please. I looked at kids island and British orchard but not impressed by either.

Hi. You need to send it to the FCO foreign and commonwealth office in London first by courier and pay to have it courierd back to dubai. Then you need to take it to the British embassy in dubai to be attested again and then to the attestation office in karama

Does anyone know of any celebrations on Sunday for Chinese New Year, like dragon dances etc that are happening during the day. Looking for something akin to London if there is anything like that in Dubai? My folks are visiting so thought we could check some festivities out with the kids.

I agree, supply is a great way to get some work and get to know how the schools out here work. I have been doing supply until I find a job that suits me and my hours. How did you get supply work? Did you just take your cv into schools?

Thanks for all the replies. Found a vacancy with JESS that looks good to start in september 2013, interested in the interview process when you're already in the country. Has anyone got experience of this? Is it just an interview or do you teach a class as well? Thanks for your help everyone

If you can get a good package that allows for your son and his education I think you would enjoy it. Whilst there are no expat state schools here many do have the paperwork loads although not maybe as much as you have endured previously. The primary teachers here work hard and have different challenges. Some schools here do enormous amounts of assessment recording and their teachers (esp Key stage leaders/SMT) spend many extra hours filling in paperwork etc. Some schools do less and are different although with the new inspections taking place most are upping their assessment recording to gain higher levels. (KHDA inspections) The pressures are different and dependent on where you have come from will probably be less that state UK.(hopefully) Different as in schools here are generally for profit rather than non profit making as in the UK, cultural differences as well. Well worth checking out the TES forum and International schools reveiw forum for more feedback and advice as to which schools to avoid or go for. Be very careful about double checking everything before you sign any contract, and make sure it's in the contract! You will also need to check out sponsorship issues esp with a LO in tow. ie were you married and do you have permission to take your son out of the UK? etc Female teachers can sponsor husbands if there is a DH in tow. Thanks for the responses. I'm out here on my husbands visa at the moment so in a good position to check out the job situation. What are interviews like here? Do you have to teach a class as part of interview process?

LeicsExpat, can you give directions please? detailed edited by nams_new on 04/12/2012 Hi. It's next to jumeirah beach hotel right opposite the beach. If you ask a taxi to take you there, they know where it is. It's off umm sequeim road. More detailed directions. Take umm seqeim road south towards madinat jumeirah. Then join the jumeirah beach road. Go past jumeirah beach hotel and wild wadi on your left then turn next left so that you've got the beach on your left. It's a couple hundred yards down on the right. Sunday to Thursday is women and children only. Really nice. Hope you find it ok

Hi LeicsExpat, hope you're happy with your move + all is going smoothly. Yes there's a Greens Ladies Playgroup, it's on Sunday mornings at 9:30am to 11:30am in Al Sidir community room + playground. They have a FB page, so maybes try a search there. The mums are friendly + welcoming, it's very laid back. Thanks KT. Will check it out. Do you know the name of the page on FB? Just tried to do a search and not coming up with anything. Cheers :-)

Hi kittykat72, I'm also new to dubai, only got here on Saturday! I would love to meet up but will have my one year old in tow. I'm hoping to go to the mums and toddlers in ibn battuta next week. Does anyone else go? Is it cliquey or will I be ok just turning up?

Can you walk to safa 2 from the metro? Had a bad experience with taxis at barsha park as I couldn't get one after we came out. Had to walk to the ramada hotel pushing the buggy through sand and dirt due to lack of pavements!

The Greens are close to you. Not a "park" but lovely little lakes and a nice area to walk around. Lots of other Moms and Tots too! Welcome! Thanks skoki. Do you know how to get to the greens from tecom by walking? I'm a bit wary of the busy road.

Thanks guys. My husband has just got a great deal with a fully furnished apartment with dewa and internet included in Tecom - Yassat building which will be fine for our first year. Feel so relieved that we've finally got somewhere to live! :-)

Thanks Thaiger. Good to get an opinion on the distance to the shops etc as that's a big factor in our decison. We originally wanted motor city as the shops, cafes etc are really good but we have considered sports city. What is sports city like? Are there shops within walking distance with doctors, dentists, cafes, swimming pools etc? I won't have a car to begin with until I find a job so location is really important. Thanks for your advice :-)

Hi, We are moving out to Dubai in 3 weeks and have had our marriage certifcate attested after a very lengthy process. We are both British nationals but got married in Italy and therefore have an Italian marriage certificate. We had to have the marriage certificate attested in Italy by the UAE embassy in Rome. However we have now found out that we may need to have it translated into English for our residence permit. Does anyone know if this can be done in Dubai or whether we need to have it attested again after translation? Obviously we're really short on time so any help would be brilliant thank you

Getting married again is a problem as we've been told that it could bring into question the legitimacy of our son as he has our married names on his birth certificate before we're arrived again in the uk. Just called the UAE embassy in Italy and they seem to think that they can attest it there. Just hope it's acceptable when we get to dubai

Just checked the wording and we are all covered up to 50,000 aed for in patient and 80% reimbursement for any medical fees. Is this good cover or should we take out additional cover? Thanks for all the replies everyone.
