Thank you for all your responses. I looked in to Repton to see hat kind of reputation they had and the results of inspections etc. it doesn't look too promising with regards to the school not being finished 5 years on! That's put us off somewhat. We have decided to go with the GEMS school instead. If Foremarke manage everything they promise then it could always be an option for the future. I would love to send her to an established school but we were very late to apply and none of them are accepting applications this late, or have accepted our registration fee then told us they are full. We only started applying 6 weeks ago as that was when DH had his job in Dubai confirmed. We visited Horizon school and loved it. They don't have any Fs1 spaces though but we are keeping our application with them open in case a place becomes available down the line.

Does you company hold debentures with any schools? If so, they would be your best option for getting in to a school.

I can't advise on travel times as we aren't out there yet either. We have been applying for schools though and it's not the easiest thing to do! You really need to apply now if you stand any chance of getting in to a school at all. It's worth remembering that you need to pay around 500aed per place to apply and then there are assessments to complete at 1000aed each. None of this actually guarantees you a place. It may come down to just taking what is offered as opposed to being choosy.

Stress sounds quite likely? Is she generally quite anxious?

Good point about perfume too. I couldn't believe how much it was last time we visited! DH travels to the US a lot so he'll be having that on his shopping list lots! :-)

A dedicated container to ship your stuff is about GBP6k, if you have worked out that you could kit out your whole house with GBP6k that would make sense. If you keep the UK house for your own use, assuming that you are assuming that your DH's UAE income will be UK tax free, you should seek tax advice about whether this will indeed be the case, as the link back to the UK in this case is quite strong. edited by Sugarbeach on 05/05/2013 Thankfully, DH's company have provided a tax advisor. He doesn't intend to return to the UK much, a few weeks a year may be and a few weeks a year for business. I'm not going to be working. If nothing changes there then we'll be ok for tax. I can't believe how many rules there are for it!

I used to just tip the sachet straight in her mouth! She loved the stuff though. I would suggest just a bit on the tip of your finger and let her lick it off. It might simply be that she doesn't like it or that the powder aspect is making her gag. Can you get anbesol liquid in Dubai? I have several friends that swear by it.

Sadly we are only getting a very small relocation allowance, which is a fixed amount, to use as we please. We have weighed up the cost of shipping our furniture and the cost to replace. We spent many years working up to having nice stuff so it would be nice to take it with us! However, the cost of shipping doesn't make it practical. Either way, we would have one house with our current stuff in and one with cheap and cheerful stuff. The plan is to stay in Dubai long term and potentially sell our UK home 5-7 years down the line, providing all goes well. My question was really to feel out if there is anything I might miss dreadfully, anything I should stock up on and generally any tips for what I should bring. The replies have been really helpful so thank you. It's a really daunting thought to move somewhere new, get a whole new house of stuff, change our way of life and leave family and friends behind!

You cannot get everything here...in 5 years I have yet to find dry roasted peanuts or simple eye make up remover. I struggle on without them :) I'll remember to pack lots of eye make up remover then! I think I can live without dry roasted peanuts! edited by LemonyLime on 04/05/2013

We're not planning on renting our house out. I plan to return to the UK in the summer to visit family etc. If I ship everything over I'll need to rebuy stuff for the UK. Some of what we have at home isn't worth shipping. The company won't be paying for shipping either and my husband and I will be arriving in Dubai 6 weeks apart, so practically, we'll need a set of everything in each house. I know it's going to be a pain to have to kit out the whole house and much of the stuff will be just grabbed in Ikea. We're visiting to look at houses in a few weeks so we will buy lots of basics ready for when he moves over. A friend of ours is going to store anything we buy so we are lucky in that respect!

We live in West Yorkshire. All very good suggestions! Most pictures we have are photos which we plan on taking on disk and re-printing there. All the rest of our pictures are Ikea specials so no problem replacing most when there! That's actually a bit embarrassing! Our dining set was due to be replaced so I'm not bothered with taking that. I don't think there is any other furniture I would bother with. I was worried that ornaments and things might get damaged in transit? I think I'll take my daughter's duvet set, that's a good idea. We're coming to visit in a few weeks and we are fortunate enough to have someone in Dubai that will store bits and pieces for us until we move. Since we won't need much for our visit, I probably have a case worth of weight and space to fill.

FS/1 is early years education that they start at 3. Your daughter will start in September 2016. It is very difficult to get places as I am finding out! It is worth starting to put her name down now but bear in mind you have to pay around 500aed just to register!

Poppy82 - I have no idea why they are or can offer us assessments. 4 schools have offered us assessments and one waited until our registration fee had been cleared then told us they didn't have any places but would stick us on the waiting list! There is a distinct possibility that we'll get through the assessments to be told there isn't space :( That's just how it is though, I'm trying to stay positive for now though! What happened to my punctuation :-s

Thank you for your reply. She can speak just fine. In fact, I'd be worried what she might tell them! She knows her colours and basic shapes. And randomly, the life cycle of a frog! She interacts with other kids ok but I'm just worried she'll be a bit shy in a totally different environment with people she doesn't know.

We are moving to Dubai in the next couple of months and have been desperately applying for school places, for FS1. Our daughter is 3, she'll be 4 in November. Some of the schools have requested we attend so she can be assessed. We're hoping to come over in the next few weeks to complete these. What on earth will they ask her and expect her to be able to do? She's quite shy around new people, will that go against her? She can read her own name and a few other simple words, count to 20 and she knows most of the jolly phonics. Is this about standard?

I meant that they start year 1 the year they turn 5 so she would start in the September and turn 5 in the November. I never thought schooling would be complicated!

Thank you. That's what I thought from reading some of the school websites but in England they start year 1 at 5 so I was very confused!
