Looks like the November thread is finally getting active :) Also it seems everyone's weight gain is right on track. Touchwood. Hope it stays that way. I have heard of mommies gaining more than 15 kgs till they reach half way point in their pregnancies. May we all gain the right amount of weight and not a pound more :D Clare: A meetup would be lovely. And nope, no hot feet for me. Still wear a warm Duvet to bed, and dislike the A/c during the day. But who knows when that will change. I have heard pregnant women get warm alot. Not looking forward to that. Silkie - Im sorry you were disappointed to hear about not being sent to Latifa, it couldn't have been easy since I know that amount of thought and research one has to go through to finally decide upon a hospital and then stick with it. Did you go through the thread i pasted? I think you can expect Dubai Hospital to be as good as Latifa. The only difference is seems is that Dubai Hospital is a multi speciality hospital so it will probably be a bigger hospital than Latifa, while Latifa is specific to maternity only. I can understand your concern about wanting to look for other options though. Where exactly will you be looking if not Dubai Hospital then? I have to share since you and I are currently in the same fix, I was thinking of going to NMC just so to avoid the very difficult management at the Local clinics and also be ensured that DH will be with me during labour. However spent all morning on EW and came across this post by lemondrops, its a long post and maybe you might want to go through it..it has again made me thinking I should toughen up and get myself mentally ready to brave all the labor pain without DH :( This is the link: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=128124&Page=1 let me know what you think after reading it. Regarding the Aster clinics, I dont think you would want to go there. I mean it is fine for checkups and stuff, but I think their maternity hospital is called Al Rafa , its in bur dubai I think. While I have not been there personally, I met a lady once who delivered there and said the experience was very bad.

nadiarikhaimi - Yes I guess In that case you need to go to the clinic yourself and ask for an appointment with the ANC Doctor. Hope it all gets sorted out for you. Good luck edited by lilypad28 on 11/07/2012

Just seen Lilypad, we must be due on same day, I'm exactly 21 today too, due date 21st. Glad things went well with tests and good luck with scan. Exactly, I have been given 21st November as my due date aswell :) Just wondering how much weight has everyone gained till yet. I was a bit over weight to start with. lost a kilo at 12 weeks..as of now my total weight gain has been 4.5 kg. Wondering if that is normal or not. My OB/GYN said I should aim to gain 9 kg.

I paid for the antenatal care at Latifa. Yes, you should be able to get all tests done right away. I never saw any outside care, the antenatal care through Latifa/clinic covers everything. Good luck! It can be a little difficult in the beginning trying to have everything explained but be persistent and someone will guide you! Thanks CABear, was at the local clinic today to see the GP. The management side was quite a nightmare to say the least. The lady behind the counter could not answer one question straight. I am quite close to tears wondering if should continue with Latifa or just go a private hospital like NMC, would atleast save me all that trouble. nadiarikhaimi - Did you go to Latifa directly to register there? Or were you at the local clinic first for the referral? Since they dint see you at Latifa till the later stages of pregnancy they probably expect you to get the initial AnteNatal Care at your local clinic. I was given the form for blood tests and Ultrasound aswell, but was told that this will be done once I come back to pay the 5000 aed and see the OB/GYN at the local clinic on the given apointment date. May I ask where your primary health care center is? Mine falls in Khawaneej area. Also the reason they might not be answering the phone lines is probably that you were calling after 2 pm... these people do not believe in working late :) edited by lilypad28 on 11/07/2012

Hi everyone, Hope everyone is doing well. Gosh everyone is getting loads of shopping done. I still dont know what I should be looking for , because we dont know the gender of the baby yet. Plus cant be looking for cots cz we may have to leave Dubai by the end of the year :( What a shame with all the nice sales that were at baby shop and mothercare. Silkie- Good to know you have decided on a hospital finally. I made the decision to go to latifa as well, made the trip to my local clinic this morning to see the GP and get a referral for Latifa. It went well and have been given an appointment to see the the OB/GYN at the same clinic on the 15th. I was given some paper work for blood tests and ultrasound but was told this will be done once i come back to see the GYN/OB and pay the 5000 AED. The administration side has me worried a bit though. Its very difficult to get your point across. I had to repeat myself 10 times and the lady still wouldn't get it. Makes me think if I should just ditch it all and just go with NMC and save my self the headache. Not to mention the appointment's that need to be fitted in to DH's busy schedule. Ah worry worry. :( Have you called Dubai Hospital after your last trip? I would not count on the pay as you go thing that you are hoping for. From what I see, all the DHA hospitals require payment of the ANC package in full (for expats) so I dont see why Dubai Hospital would be any different. Also if it is worth a try, you can try and insist on getting referred to Latifa, although I do not know if that will work. I was just told by the DHA customer care rep that I can insist on going to my preferred hospital (I actually did not believe him) but its worth a try. In any case from what information I have been given on expat women, Dubai Hospital and Latifa both have the same standards of care and you should not be too worried. This is an old thread but maybe you will find some information that might be useful http://www.expatwoman.com/abudhabi/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=94626 Awayfromhome - Good luck with your trip back home. :). I have not managed to get the 20 week scan done yet. God knows i need to get it done asap since I am 21 weeks already today. Just need to get the registration at a hospital sorted out asap so I can proceed with that. Regarding the triple marker test, yes I got the results for that, they seem to be fine from the looks of it since I haven't been to the doctor after that. Just too lazy to go. Thanks for asking :) Louve - welcome to the thread. I was at the maternity tour at CITY hospital this Friday as well. It seems like you were at the morning tour, since I don recall any one asking questions regarding Gas & Air :)

This does seem strange. I registered and delivered with Latifa and had my earlier appointments at Umm Suqeim clinic. I registered at 15 weeks and had my first appointment right away. I didn't have any appointments at Latifa until I was about 36 weeks. Perhaps check with your local clinic and try to make an appointment with them. I recommend going to your local clinic in person and bring the receipt for the 5000 aed antenatal care, they should give you an appointment right away. Hi CABear, I am going to make a trip to my local clinic in the morning to get the referral letter for latifa. Can you please tell me where do you pay the 5000 aed for the anti natal care. Is that done at the local clinic or is it done at latifa hospital. Also what is to be expected once you pay for the ante natal care, is it possible to request for certain tests to be done right away? since I am 21 weeks and need to get the anomaly scan done asap. TIA

I saw some tester bottles in one of those perfume shops at outlet mall, they sell them at discounted prices too, the bottle size was the same but it did not come in the original packaging, but rather in a plain white box. Maybe souq is selling one of those.

Hi! I would recommend Latifa over NMC. Both have pros and cons, but there are a few big factors which would make me choose Latifa if I were to have another baby. If your insurance will cover Latifa, I would recommend going there. Hi, Thankyou for reply. My insurance actually covers NMC and not Latifa, but i am hoping it will cover Latifa through reimbursement basis. Can you please explain what are the factors that make Latifa better than NMC? I am leaning more and more towards latifa now, just need to be sure it is indeed the right choice. TIA edited by lilypad28 on 05/07/2012

Hi Suznz, I cannot thankyou enough for writing such a detailed reply. Bless you cz I have been having a hard time stressing over which hospital I want to deliver at, one day I want to go with dr elsa at City or medcare or NMC and the other day I get more inclined towards Latifa. Your Detailed reply has really helped me see a clearer picture. I was worried it being a govt hospital you wont get much attention from doctors, specially for expats, but from what you have written it seems they don't compromise on care. I think I will put my faith in the positive reviews of Latifa here and register with them and hope it all ends well for me. I so want to have a NVD and I think I have a better chance at it at Latifa than any private hospital. May I ask was yours a A natural delivery in the end or was it a C section. And again ..Thankyou thankyou thankyou :) edited by lilypad28 on 05/07/2012

Hi, EmilyG and Suznz, Thankyou for replies Suznz, you mentioned you were rushed to the hospital in emergency, did you have a pre term delivery or did you carry till term? what extra costs did you have to incur cz of it? Also exactly what conditions put you at high risk? I will really like to know. EmilyG, would you recommend Latifa? I don't care if its a no frills hospital but I dont want to end up dealing with inefficient management and busy doctors and nurses. Is the care you receive good? pls any details will be a great help

Hey lilypad28 Thanks for your reply. New to this site so i hope this gets posted correctly :-) Yes, i'm looking to check with NMC specialty too since it is near to my place. Thanks for the info on Latifa, i'll go on Sunday probably then... Well, i havent considered the NICU costs yet, are they that high in Medcare/City? By City, which hospital are you referring to? City Hospital, Dubai if i'm not wrong? I've also read that Latifa is no fancy stuff & very busy nurses, but i just want to be in good hands when i'm due, also dont want to be forced/pushed for c-s as what i've read online. So bit nervous & scared. Not yet decided where i'll get my 20-week scan, probably will decide after my research by Sunday :-) Btw, just learned one of my hubby's colleague's wife delivered in MedCare a month ago & their experience was not very great. She was kind-of induced (i guess it is some kind of injection/medicine for contractions - please correct me if i'm wrong) few weeks before her due date & then had to be taken for emergency c-s. Any opinions on MedCare? Hi, Sure sunday will be a good day to check it out, although do make sure you go there before 2pm, I haven't been there again but I don't think they will be giving you a hospital tour. The NICU costs for City Hospital, Medcare and American Hospital range around 5000-6000 per day... so that's quite high. Although I hope none of our babies will need NICU care it is always best to prepare for all possibilities. Regarding Medcare there are mixed reviews on this forum aswell, have you asked why she was induced? There might have been some need for it otherwise I do not see why anyone would let a doctor to induce them without need. An emergency C section is what everyone should prepare them selves for, things do not always go to plan the way we want them to. However it is an altogether another story if the doctor pushes you for a c section from the start, that's when you run :)

Hi everybody... I'm so happy to see so many November-due moms... I'm due last week of Nov (19 weeks preggo currently & this is my first baby) :-) Like many, i am also looking for the right doc/hospital to give birth in Dubai. So far, i took my checkups with Zulekha hosp. Dubai, so far appointments were ok since i changed 3 docs in Zulekha itself - sometimes due to non-availability of doc, sometimes due to unconcerned behaviour towards me. Also, recent searches reveal that they (Zulekha) are more inclined towards pushing for c-s rather than normal birth. Is this true? Has anyone have personal experience (friends/family) delivering in Zulekha? I'm staying very close to Zulekha, so thought it is a nice option esp since i dont have maternity covered with my current insurance. What other options are good? I've heard Al Wasl/Latifa (govt) hospital is best here to give birth as they push for normal deliveries as far as possible. Any experiences to share? I'm planning to spend my Saturday looking for hospital/doc in American hosp, Welcare, Latifa & MedCare. Though it would be expensive, but it'll ensure me I'm in safe hands. Any views or help is greatly appreciated as I'm fast approaching 20 weeks (time for mid-term scan, isnt it?) Good luck to all new mums to be! :-) Hi silkie16, Im sorry to hear your experience with zuleikha hasnt been good..if you live near zuleikha then perhaps NMC is near you aswell, have you tried looking there? A friend recently delivered there and was happy with it in the end. I am due in the last week of Nov aswell so you and I are more or less in the same week ( I am 20 weeks today) Have you decided where you will be getting your 20 week scan done from? Have heard good things about Medcare and City myself, but a little concerned about NICU costs , have you given that any consideration? As for latifa, have initiated the Health Card process required for it today, but am not quite sure if I will be going for Latifa in the end. Bit worried about ending up having to deal with very busy doctors and nurses and lazy management. Btw dont go to Latifa on a Saturday, went there a week ago and there was no management to deal with, Friday Saturdays are off. HTH

Hi Lilypad, i managed to post this twice...dont know how but on the other thread there are more responses. Where are you planning to go? I am not quite sure yet, I was thinking to get myself registered in Latifa, but the doctor I am currently seeing says Al Baraha is equally good with an excellent NICU, maximum time given for a NVD, plus you dont have to pay upfront antenatal charges like you have to in Latifa, this has left me quite double minded, I dont know If i can commit to Latifa, since I might end up changing my mind and deliver at a private hospital and keep Al Baraha as a back up in case of a pre term delivery (god forbid) ...have you heard anything about Al Baraha hospital? good or bad? there seems nothing about it on this forum...if its as good as my doctor says I think il go with it. Plus its cheap too ... 5000 for a natural delivery and 7000 for C section. You might want to have a look at it since you mentioned you dont have insurance in the other thread. Which hospital are you planning to go to anyway?

I am currently 20 weeks, and yet to decide on which hospital I will be delivering at. Am I too late to register at Latifa Hospital? I read somewhere that you have to register till 20 weeks? Is that really true?. Also keeping in mind that that I will have to get the 20 week scan done by them which by the looks of it will be scheduled very late since they are very busy. If anyone has any info regarding this pls do help. Im really stressing out now.

Hi Ginee, What did THE DOCTORS say about hydroquinone? Can you please share? Did they say its okay to use it? I once asked my dermatologist if I can use it, and he said that I look into the mirror too much :). Did some research on it and it IS supposed to work. Btw i do not know if you can get it in its pure form, but some creams add it as a bleaching agent, FADE OUT contains it if you want to try it (Do read the label before buying, some versions dont add it in anymore). Do let us know if it did indeed for you or not if you decide to try it. PS: do use SPF with it. HTH

Hi Jenc123, Im not sure if this is related but recently found that a few of pictures on our walls had developed mould, they were stuck to the wall using double tape, i was quite horrified to say the least. Do'nt know where the moisture for the mould to develop came from, got the wall checked for leaks today but was told there is no leak in it, the maintenance man said that another apartment had developed the same problem. Maybe its just very humid these days, but do check for any mould that may have formed. May avoid some bad surprises.

This sounds very interesting, never heard of supraLASIK... I have always wanted perfect vision aswell but was unfortunately told that I am not a good candidate for the PRK procedure when I was evaluated, because of some dry spots on the eye. This was 2 years ago, left me quite heartbroken, maybe this procedure will work for me too.... Flames92 please keep us updated on how much you learn about this procedure, how much does it cost and whether you decide to go for it or not.

Hi 11legs, Thankyou for your detailed reply, I am actually in the same situation you are, insurance wont cover much, thus was advised by the doctor I am seeing to either register in Latifa or Al Baraha Hospital, mostly because of the NICU care over there. Since NICU costs at private hospitals are extremely high. Unfortunately there does not seem to be much on Al Baraha hospital here but Latifa seems to be popular. I just tried calling Latifa hospital at 4 pm but no one picked my call. Also visited the hospital last weekend only to find no management on the desks. This has left me quite confused, Is the management side really quite bad? or was it just bad timing on my part. Can you also please guide me how to go about the health card? Quite clueless about that. Sorry for asking so many questions.

Hi Awayfromhome, well lucky for you , your insurance changed, Alico has to be the worst insurance ever, pity I did not know this sooner or would have had it changed myself, unfortunately I am stuck with it now. The 10k cover is extremely low considering the fact that it has to cover all the antenatal appointments and scans as well as the delivery itself. Currently I have been seeing a doctor at a private Aster clinic near by, I am okay with her so far for the initial appointment but really need to finalize the hospital and a gynae soon. As for the Dubai Mall clinic, well same reason, my insurance wont cover it, and reimbursement takes ages..anyway good luck with your 20 week scan. Hang in there Clare, you have made it so far without knowing, you can go the rest of the way too :D, but in any case you dont, it will be as much of a sweet surprise to know now as it will be to know after birth. Goodluck :) Question, Does anyone on this thread know till how many weeks can you register at Latifa? is the cut off at 20 weeks? or can you register later aswell? Also about the 20 week scan till how many weeks can it be done? I read on another thread that it can be done till 24 weeks...is that true?

Morning All. Hope everything is ok Scottish Gal. There is nothing worse than doctors not reading notes properly and making judgements and drawing conclusions on half the information. We are definitely moving in mid July but not sure of the exact date yet. Maisa - I had another check up at Latifa hospital yesterday. I saw a different doctor who was better than the last. The nurse I had was really nice and wanted to make sure that I was getting everything I should with my package. With the package you are entitled to 2 scans, namely 12 week and 20 week, however, I had already had my 12 week scan elsewhere. The nurse said that she wanted me to get my moneys worth and said I should book another scan. I did laugh as the earliest slot they had was 27 September! I might have had the baby by then!!. I explained to the lady who then found a cancellation on 20 September. I can't quite see the point of it but as the nurse said I have paid for it. After the sonographer not saying much at the scan, the doctor looked at the paperwork and said the baby looks perfect but the sonographer was a bit concerned as there is slightly too much water. It would have been nice to have known at the time but I guess its not that serious otherwise they would have got me back sooner. I am now having a Glucose Tolerance Test to check for Gestational Diabetes (I think from my reading) to see if this is why there is too much water. I am hoping that this is nothing to worry about and that it will sort itself out. The doctor said that I need to decide at 34 weeks about my delivery; i.e. c-section or natural. I am swayed towards a c-section at the moment but she was saying that if I have a c-section for this baby (first being an emergency) then I could have only one more so it depends how big a family I want. I can only just about get my head around two never mind anymore than three. Anyway ladies hope to meet you all in July. Hi 11legs Hope everything is going well with your pregnancy, I just needed a bit of help here, Im torn between either opting for Latifa or going to a private hospital. Can you please advise as to how has your experience with them has been so far, also I have read that you can only register with them till 20 weeks, is that really true?, I am 19 weeks currently so in a state of panic since I have not decided yet. Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Welcome aboard aurora. So glad more people are joining. Wow your a patient one Clare :) I dont think il be able to wait till birth to find out the gender. My Insurance is Metlife Alico, the limit is 10,000-15000 depending on weather its a Natural Birth or C-Sec. Extremely low. However its not the Delivery costs that has me worried, I was wanting to go with City Hospital anyway but the thought of having a pre term delivery and extremely high costs of NICU there have scared me into either opt for Latifa or just go back for home the delivery. Will look into Nine medical center for the 20 week scan if i don't happen to like the place my doctor refers me to. Been living in Dubai for almost 2.5 years now.

Hi Thankyou for the info Clare, il be popping into the virgin store soon to look into those dvd's too.. so far iv been really lazy . As for the triple marker, the results might come in any time today so im trying not to think about it too much. You girls probably had the double marker test, since its done from 12 to 14 weeks, that's around when the NT scan is done. Silly me, I kept putting mine off since i was too scared to do it. I have not bought anything yet, not sure where to start looking, plus were not sure about the gender either. I am still 18 weeks so no 20 week scan for me yet :) may I ask where did you get the scan done from Clare? As for the hospitals I hope i will be able to find some place il be comfortable with, the brief visit to Latifa yesterday did not leave me very happy yesterday, although the management desks were almost empty and I did not deal with anyone there, the two ladies on the customer service desk just kept chattering between themselves and seemed downright rude, I may be wrong but that's the impression I got. Goodluck to you both for your trips back home. I might not be able to go back for a visit so its going to be one long summer for me. Sigh :)

Hello Clare and Awayfrom home, yes good to see we have our own November thread finally. Clare can you please recommend any good yoga workout, as in the name of the DVD that you are doing, iv been wanting to do yoga but have never done it before so completely clueless about what and what to look for. You both are lucky to have found doctors you are comfortable with and like, I am still not sure where I am going to deliver. I would prefer Dr Elsa as heard so many good things about her but unfortunately my insurance would not cover that much. :( I went into Latifa today to ask about the maternity packages but turned out there was no management on desks since it was an OFF day. Have to ask have any of you girls been recommended or already done the double or triple marker test? I got tested today and worried about what the result might be.

Phytophanere hair supplement tablets from PHYTO are supposed to accelerate hair growth. Used them for quite sometime myself..maybe that will help them grow if your willing to try them. Otherwise the only other option seems to be hair spray, spray some on a comb and use the comb to flatten them out.

From my experience Emirates hospital sends in all the blood tests to be done at SUPER RELIGARE LABORATORIES in health care city. They seem to be okay. Just looking at my PTT results that just arrived from the same lab. The PTT levels are high and i do not know what that means...bummed :( edited by lilypad28 on 10/06/2012

Why do they rank " high" ? This is a genuine question.. Let me try and explain this, back home where I come from, not everyone wears an abaya, it is more of a choice you make due to religious reasons, so you usually do not wear an abaya just because it is something that everyone does, its a thought out decision, which does require quite some sacrifices to be made. I understand being a muslim I should be wearing one (or cover up properly) when I go out, but I dont everytime, so I am just not quite there yet. Thus Respect for all the women who do, whether they be arab, non arab, muslim or non muslim. I get it about why you would think that way about another Muslim woman - I don't get it why you would about someone who is not. If anything , I would think that you COULD think they are doing it as a fashion statement or to see what it is like or any other reason which is not the correct reason which is the religious one..... If you ask me, if I see a non muslim wearing an abaya (not that I will be able to tell in the first place) the only thing I will assume is that they are wearing it out of respect for the local culture and traditions, and in case of dubai it is something you do not even have to do unlike in KSA where it is mandatory. Frankly the thought about it being a FASHION STATEMENT does not cross the mind, mainly because an abaya is mostly worn to cover all that is fashionable, your fashionable clothes, your fashionable hair etc. But even if a non muslim does it for the sake of fashion...well then good for them, I do not see anything wrong about that either, why would a muslim woman who believes woman should not wear tiny revealing dresses disapprove of a non muslim wearing an abaya to cover up. In any case I am no one to judge.

If you cant find Bareez'e in Meena Bazar, they do have an outlet in the area where the big flag is, i dont seem to remember the name of the of that big road. I hope you will find your cottons there, and I do hope they sell them separately by the yard as they do back home. And as emur said, do pre shrink them. HTH

I am not local, but anyone wanting to wear an abaya muslim or non muslim really ranks high in my opinion (not that i think low of anyone who does not). I do not see any reason for for anyone getting nasty about it. Abaya is not something that is unique to emarati or arab culture only. It is worn all over the world. If you want to wear it for Ramadan, then please go ahead and do so, and not let some misguided people stop you from doing so. If they have a problem with an expat wearing an abaya, well then that is their problem, not yours.

What a nice gesture, trying out an abaya in Ramadan :). Nope, not wrong at all if clothes are visible underneath. As long it is something that covers up and not something very short. IMHO
