As some of you may remember I no longer live in Dubai, I am in Cyprus. Last autumn a boat with several hundred refugees ran aground off the West coast of the island, it was taken under tow by the local Coastguard and taken safety to port in Limassol. The majority of the refugees initially refused to leave the ship, since they had paid to go to Italy, they had relatives and support systems on mainland Europe. They also may have guessed the way they would be treated here in Cyprus. They were quite correct in their apprehension, they have been abandoned into unlivable conditions under canvas with little or no facilities. I have been working with others to try to alleviate the plight of these people, I have yet to meet one who would have chosen to leave their homes and in many case their businesses in Syria but they had no option, when the government is bombarding them with barrel bombs on the one hand and D@@sh, with their well known savagery on the other. This week another boat has been washed up, again these people were fleeing H@ll. Today I met two doctors, a dentist, a lawyer, two university lecturers and a bank manager............these people are not "economic migrants'" ..........they are ordinary people, like you or I just trying to survive. This thread had gone horribly off topic, these people have absolutely nothing to do with the UK's inability to face up to its responsibilities to their injured armed forces. we could argue all night about who or what is to blame, but these people are NOT leaving everything they have to come to Europe to leech of the public purse, they are fleeing for their lives. As they say in the oilfield............when your a@@se is on fire...........you jump.

These are definitely economic migrants. The people who are really suffering would not have the money to pay smugglers. Bombs do not differentiate between rich and poor. Just because these people have money does not improve their chances of survival in a war zone. And the fact that they do have money surely proves they are not economic migrants They are just more fortunate than those who do not have the means to escape, but no less worthy of our compassion. This huge shift in population is a human disaster with far reaching implications and it will require much more than the impulsive compassion or zenophobic rantings it appears to have inspired in equal quantities. We can only hope that political leaders around the world face up to the situation, which they have done much to create, and find a long term solution for the regions ravaged by war.

I watched the interview with the sister on Sky news, there is no mention of teeth. After Googling the "story" the only hits are in readers comments on various newspapers, obviously after seeing the Youtube clip. Even the Daily Mail has not run with this.............. I suspect this is a clever use of dubbing and a very. very nasty hoax indeed.

In fairness to the OP..............and her "gardener". both are handicapped by their mutual delusion that gardeners exist in Dubai. With a very, very few exceptions, these chaps are general labourers, ok for sweeping, hosing and clearing up leaves. The only successful way to garden in Dubai is to read up on it and either give very firm but simple instructions or do it oneself.

Hello Ladies, Was hoping you can give me some suggestions. I'm looking for good full coverage foundation that's not cakey on the face. If that's possible! What brand do you use that you can recommend? Don't mind spending a bit, but not an arm and a leg. Using a BB cream now but feel I've not been matched properly as I cover so the lady obviously could not see my neck. TIA! I always thought that the best way to test foundation was on the inside of ones' wrist?

Have you just moved here? The medical is for HIV/Tuber/Hepatitis - you don't have a pregnancy test for your medical...only the maids are tested for that. However I rem you have a chest xray and that might be harmful for your unborn child. Do try to get married asap and you can get married I the church here..good luck. Dont leave it longer than 2 wks from now. I don't think the OP is referring to the Visa medical. I am assuming she is Muslim, hence the marriage in court with the customary blood tests, perhaps some of the other Muslim ladies on here can advise, perhaps marriage in another Islamic country may be the answer, unless a civil marriage (in Cyprus perhaps) would be sufficient to protect against legal difficulties. Good luck Op, not the best situation to find oneself in.

Cherpie, you posted on the Europe forum asking for European holiday destinations, if you and your family are going to be in Europe, that might be your chance to grab your babies and get out. Please think about that seriously, because otherwise, from what you hae posted on here, your story will not have a happy ending.. .

It's really quite simple, just run a bath, wait till it cools down. Do it the night before, if you need water in the am, then just add hot. Fill the bath after you have done, repeat process.

Cherpie, I don't come onto this forum very often, but out of curiosity and sentiment I do dip in from time to time. I clicked on your thread and was so disturbed to read what i had thought would be a relatively straightforward query about children fasting, but then read once again about your husband's abusive behaviour. You have been posting on EW for quite some time, outlining the very difficult situation in which you find yourself and it is obvious that you have yet to find a workable way out. However, no matter how unhappy you are in this marriage, you have children, and now it would appear that your husband is causing great pain to your daughter. This s not about religion, it is about bullying and abuse of power and only you can stop this, It may be your choice to stay and endure, but you really do need to think about your children. My recollection is that you have family abroad, no matter what has gone before, they will help you if you ask. I am sure your mother would want to know what is happening, and will reach out to help. Please just try to make contact with her. Sending you a big cyber hug Trishx

Just saw this, don't come on the forum very much! GE is right, the North and South are very different, though both lovely! We chose the South for several reasons, firstly as an EU citizen it was relatively straightforward to get residency. and secondly because it was easier for us to import the zoo, there was no quarantine as long as the paperwork is in place. Lastly I had fallen in love with the house, and would have moved there no matter where it was! But, that was an emotional decision and we are very lucky that it did work out so well. As a EU citizen the main requirement is that you have a regular income, ie pension of over 1400eu per month for a couple and you must have health insurance, either privately or through your own country's reciprocal agreement with Cyprus. We have the latter, but self pay for private treatment since the state hospitals leave something to be desired (although good in an emergency) We live in a fairly isolated village in the hills, although there are other expats here it is not for everyone, it's a different world and only barely in the 20th century. If you have holidayed here then you will have an idea of what you want, the majority of British expats live near Paphos, there are many villages which have large expat communities, mostly the housing is relatively new build, ranging from holiday apartments to grand villas so there is a huge choice but not to my taste, some communities are really a little too much of a British ghetto. Pissouri is halfway between Limassol and Paphos, it has a nice village square with many bars and tavernas, Kouklia is another pleasant mix of old and new, and both have modern amenities. To the East of Limassol there are a few other villages with many expats, Pryrgos is nice (and close to the tourist area with a nice beach.) On the subject of property, two pieces of advice, rent before you buy, rentals are plentiful and reasonably priced, get to know exactly where you enjoy living before you commit. And when you do, only buy a property with ready title deeds, can't stress that enough. The people i know who are happiest here are those who have not come straight from UK or indeed anywhere in Western Europe, Cyprus may well be in the EU bit it is NOT European. If you have coped with the frustrations of everyday life in the Gulf, then Cyprus is easy, but many expats think it will be Bournemouth only with more sun. We have a phrase "This is Cyprus"...........saves a lot of hair tearing! We've been here for six years, and we love it and wouldn't live anywhere else!

It's because they are not Roma. Travelers are mostly of Irish stock, but some are Scots. They used to be called Tinkers because they were itinerant tinsmiths, many people believe they are the descendants of Celts dispossessed by the Romans and later the Angles and Saxons. True travelers have unfortunately been joined, and confused with people who may have some traveler blood but frankly have chosen the lifestyle as an excuse for antisocial behaviour.

The thermal swimming lagoon (I think it's called the Blue Lagoon) is worth a visit, and try not to miss the old church near the President's Palace outside Reykjavik, it is quite amazing, also Reykjavik Cathedral is spectacular. Most hotels can help point you in the right direction to go on a tour to the glaciers and volcanic region. Iceland is a lovely country and the peoplle are very welcoming and friendly.

i was about to post virtually the same advice as Simples, she is absolutely right, you need to get married soonest, and Cyprus is quick and simple (assuming you have no previous marital complications or religious considerations). I would add one other caveat, even though you do have some leeway timewise before you need to see a doctor, if by some desperately unfortunate mischance you were to suffer a miscarriage or other complication in the meantime, you could find yourself in a very sticky situation if you needed to go to hospital. This happened to an acquaintance of mine and it caused greatly distressing consequences. You really need to move quickly to cover your back, the last thing you need in pregnancy is stress. Oh, and many congratulations, and good luck. edited by Livelytrish on 25/02/2015

I'm obviously in the minority here, and beginning to wish I'd never pointed out the obvious fact that on an open internet forum, all may not be as it seems. Goodness knows, there have been enough examples of that over the years. And yes, I find some of the responses ironic. However this is an open forum and we are all entitled to our own opinions.

If you really have such a [b'>low opinion [/b'>of EW posters, perhaps you should petition the Mods for a sticky.................. Be aware, this is the Internet, what you say may be read by others. On the contrary, many of them get a lot from EW and are happy to pay it back, you're the one who is being sarcastic and condescending.. "did you expect it to be confidential" ? No, I don't think anyone here is that naïve - their point is that they feel used and mocked... Why would you not expect posters to at least be real people ?? You don't get irony, do you?

Hello LT & Nomad I hope you & yours are well & happy :) Im in Dubai for a few days . The wind has been making it really uncomfortable blowing the sand around. On the other hand the cloud cover has kept the temperature down. So quite nice to walk as long as you can keep the sand out of your eyes. It was freezing when I was at home & they had some snow again yesterday. That's three times in about two months. !!! That's more than I ever remember. Im praying they have a good Summer. Wouldn't it be lovely to distribute the heat a little more evenly & the cold of course :) Certainly weird weather this year! Good to hear from you Neamhai. Enjoy your break Trishx

I do realise that for many posters the import of this story is the safety of highrise buildings but today ten people died and eight were injured in a fire in Abu Dhabi. They were workers living in "illegal accommodation" according to The National. The two sides of UAE.

Ski slopes in Western Canada closing for the season , snow has melted. Maritimes buried in snow some cars in the streets almost covered and folks digging tunnels out of their houses. The world weather seems to be on its head at the mo. It is weird, snow on lemon trees in fruit is a strangely beautiful sight. Never thought I'd be out de- icing the path in Cyprus! On a serious note.....be careful that the frozen lemons don't get too heavy for the branches. We had a freak snowstorm in Sept last year ( seriously !!!) leaves and some fruit on the trees, massive branches were just ripped off with the extra weight. The storm was nick named " Treemageddon ". Frozen lemons in your G&T I think The howling gales we had last week took care of any vulnerable branches, and not a few of the roof tiles. The goats are not happy, their shed is now a shipping hazard in the Med!

Does anyone know what the plans are for this "zoo"? For nearly 10 years I have been hearing that it will be relocated With all the money/ investments going into bigger, better , faster projects you would hope there would really be a plan for these long suffering animals. Instead of another mall how about somewhere for these animals to live out their remaining years that is healthy, comfortable and humane ?! They are supposed to be shutting it down when the new "Dubai Safari" is completed. And in 2005 it was going to relocated to a state of the art new facility in Dubailand by 2007.

I'm sorry but I think the title of the OP's post is a little misleading. There are no simple routine "checks" for ovarian cancer, and the wording of her post implies that we should avail ourselves of an opportunity which does not exist. It might have been wiser to phrase her (well intended) post differently, along the lines of "ladies, please do not ignore any unusual symptoms" Ovarian cancer is well named the silent killer, simply because it is quite hard to diagnose early, since it mimics so many relatively harmless symptoms. I spent two years suffering back and pelvic pain, bloating and general malaise before I was finally diagnosed correctly, mercifully the cancer was restricted to the ovary and I made a full recovery. In fairness, this was many years ago, and diagnostic options have greatly improved, but sadly there is, as yet, no workable protocol for routine preventative screening.

I didn't see the program your referring to, but people should know if they are eating halal/kosher meat. Here I know its all Halal, at home I expect it to be labelled if its Halal/Kosher as opposed to the other way around, People have a right to know and make an informed decision. Not everyone that doesn't want to eat Halal meat is an uneducated nitwit that thinks their meat has been spiked! [b'>I would prefer not to eat Halal meat but I have no choice here and I fully accept that[/b'>. At home I have a right not to. [b'>Thankfully back home I've seen my dinner raised from the field all the way to the fork[/b'>. edited by mannikat on 19/01/2015 I honestly don't see what the big deal is between the 2 for non-muslims. The animals are raised the same... just slaughterd differently. It is that very difference which is the "big deal". For many people it is less a matter of religious observance, cultural preference or even culinary taste, it's about the ethics.
