LT- thats the bit I'm struggling with. His neighbours for the most part have been friends with him for 25 years plus, and while his behaviour is completely bizzare and so totally out of character, they don't see it and won't entertain it that there is anything wrong with him. I'm asking and asking all the questions and it's like they are in a buffered zone..they would rather withdraw from him than actually think that something needs to be done, and that he needs help. Mind you, Dad is not making it easy for them. I'm begining to feel like I am the only one who can see that this is the begining of a problem, and I'm on the other side of the world! And it's not just his behaviours, it's his judgement that frightens me. SueB/shaks- how did you guys cope dealing with this from afar? Obviously, I'm going no where at the moment except in circles, so I need to go home and sort some things out, but in the long run... how am I going to manage? He is much loved by his entourage, so that is a relief, and when I can get it acknowledged, if it is indeed what I think it is, then there will be help systems in place for him. He can't travel out to me here at all. And I do like your idea for getting him in for assessment Sue, thanks. Haven't been able to post on this as was locked out of EW for a few days! Apologies as I have not read all of the posts but will do so... I just wanted to ask what it is that makes you think this when you are here in Dubai ? Did you have a visit there recently? I think we tend to notice the changes in our parents MORE because of the fact that we don't see them all the time. It is strange that your father's colleagues and friends are saying all is OK...of course, some of what you say is a perfectly normal part of the ageing process. I have had extensive experience with both dementia and Alzheimers and they are awful to deal with. It is a hard day when you have to make your parent a ward of court to ensure their safety . :( SM........I found that my parents' friends were in denial..........until the situation became too obvious to ignore. Either through embarrassment, misplaced loyalty or a self defensive refusal to accept the very frightening possibilities of their own decline ........it was only after both my parents had become hospitalised that they shared their thoughts with me. To be honest I could have slapped some of them. As for the GP......who had refused point blank to have any discussion on the grounds of "patient confidentiality", then basically washed his hands of them because it was "too late".........words fail me.

Appletiser, I can't remember the exact price, but I think I bought the shampoo for less than Dhs. 30. With 20% discount, it'll come up to approx. Dhs. 24 (for 8 oz or 236 ml). Don't think it's that expensive.... Now does it work well? I'm using the green apple and ginger extract one which helps to build volume for fine hair. I think it works fine (not better or worse than regular shampoos)! Honestly, the only reason I bought it was because it's gluten free. And if it's free from all scary chemicals, then that's a plus. Some other organic ones available at the organic food store: http://www.organicfoodsandcafe.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=84&Itemid=84 Perhaps I'm missing something here, but why would you buy gluten free shampoo? I mean, unless you drink it?

It's Rugby..........not a tea party! All about male self confidence and (barely) legalised aggression. We (Scots) won the Grand Slam in 1990 with Flower of Scotland - growled, not sung by a choir.....and breaking with all tradition, instead of the usual run onto the pitch.......a slow menacing walk. REALLY upset the English press, brings a tear to my eye even now!

it's a bit sad isn't it when we wish they would do it in malls too.... What gets me is that it's so damn cold in the malls - they must have nerve damage in legs and arms not to feel it. It's like the chicks in Northern UK going out of a night in December in barely there dresses and no coat!!! When I was in my 20s I never went out with a coat (even in winter) I always remember my Mum telling me I will catch a cold. Don’t all 20 something’s do this? You must have grown up in the balmy Sarf.........

Very sorry to hear this Aroha.........I know exactly what you are going through........not a parent with Alzheimer's per se but both my parents ended up with severe Dementia. The worst part was in the beginning, outsiders..including health professionals were unwilling to see the signs and sometimes i felt like Cassandra . Are there any close family friends, ideally your father's peers that you can talk to? There is always a tendency to denial, out of misplaced loyalty (or fear for themselves) but they will have noticed the changes you are observing, and hopefully give you validation. That in itself is strengthening, insane though it sounds. Believe me, this is the hardest part, once everyone knows the score, it does become a little easier..never easy, but at least a little less like wrestling marshmallow.

The best thing that could happen to the animals suffering in that h@llhole would be a good meal followed by humane euthanasia. It was supposed to have been closed down and relocated by 2007 to an all singing dancing state of the art facility in Dubailand, so for years nothing was done to improve conditions because of that promised land. That new location hasn't happened........so the suffering continues. It truly is a shameful state of affairs.

What about the couple who used to cycle round Springs with their small baby in a little cart thing trailing behind Daddy's bike, and another toddler riding pillion behind Mummy? Scary, some people's risk assessment skills.

The real answer does not lie within the below posters' comments, it lies in the large number of people who've read it and responded with 'no comment'. Having a disability or handicap in this country is tough, I can't speak for other countries as I've never tried to work in those work forces. But, really - who wants to be served by someone who doesn't have the physical ability to carry things for you? Or who you have to explain something to twice before they understand? Their disability means they are hiring someone not up to par with everyone else, so how can the same price be charged for someone who takes longer to do the same job as an able bodied person? And in professional industries, who wants to rely on someone who does not demonstrate strength or make you feel strong by association (referring to physically disabled people who having qualifications)? I suggest you pose that question to the colleagues of Stephen Hawkins..or consider the example of FDR.

Thank you for your wonderful, quick responses! We are moving from Cyprus so anything under 30 degrees feels nice and fresh these days:). Cyprus is surprisingly chilly in the winter, though. I will leave the heaters behind. I have a feeling we have enough stuff to fill more than one container... I am sort of afraid to get someone from the removal company over to give me an estimate... I would take at least one..............never as chilly as Cyprus but it still gets damp and cold feeling on the odd day in the winter. And you will soon be longing for the relative cool of 35c....................still less power cuts to worry about!;)

I would have thought the reason more expats return from Dubai is because in Dubai they are just that - expats, not emigrants. For the majority of people, English or otherwise, Dubai is not and cannot become a permanent residence by virtue of visa regulations, whereas other popular UK expat destinations - the EU or US or Australia do have mechanisms in place to allow people to settle permanently. Can't see why anyone would take issue with the original piece, it just states fairly obvious and bland facts. Didn't see anything "whiney" or negative about it.

A situation similar to this impacted our extended family...............and we are still all paying for the consequences........a 17 year old boy is not safe to be left to his own resources in today's UK. Yes. some colleges have accommodation, but that is exactly all they do have, no pastoral care whatsoever. To the OP.....whatever you do, please do not leave your boy adrift ......drag him out with you, or go home. I don't think you can generalise like that - everyone is different . I went to Uni at 17 and while I had parents in the same country, I didn't see them from the start of a term to the end of it and those were the days when there were no mobile phones etc...yes, I got in some scrapes and got myself out of them. Yes, most of us did survive....in a different age. And a 17 year old boy is very different from a 17 year old girl..........and the OP is not (I assume) talking about UNI but a college course, a very different thing. <em>edited by Livelytrish on 05/09/2011</em>

snowflake, sorry that I'm not a new empty nester, my offspring are now 29 (and holding!) and 42.............but for what it's worth, you need to recognise that this is an adjustment, not a bereavement. Your children will still need you as much as ever, just with less laundry. Welcome to a new and rewarding time of your life, when you have young adults, with all their new experiences, and growing wisdoms to share with you. And to the young mums feeling distressed by this thread............just wait till you have teenagers.........your children finally growing up will seem like a wonderful blessing. ;);)

There is the Museum of Childhood.....lots of lovely old toys etc........but to be really honest, most babies and very small people really don't find sight seeing per se interesting. There should be at least one pantomine at a theatre tho.......apart from that, bracing walks and bribing your MIL to babysit whilst you hit Jenners would seem to be the best plan!

Well.......most well mannered people would have realised after the relatively good natured jibes following her first post...........that text speak was not the accepted norm on this forum.....and come back with a polite "oops". The riposte showed a degree of self satisfied confidence which I doubt any of our comments can dent. But then.......I'm just a grumpy old lady who loves the English language and believes that it is a rich and infinitely subtle form of human communication and as such not to be reduced to a verbal version of the Morse Code. But then, that's just me.

Maids are generally people who cannot offer anything to the workforce in their home countries because they are not skilled. The average salary for a maid in this country is 800 dirhams a month, including food, clothes, housing, toiletries, phone credit, etc. So why do people leave their children with someone who is so unskilled and cannot offer anything? Because they can't afford to live in Dubai unless they both work?

But isn't the UAE's crime categorisation somewhat different from the West's? Drinking without a licence (or drinking water during daylight in Ramadan).......and let's not even go down the road of illegal finger gestures, let alone s#xual behaviour outwith marriage And then there is the whole bounced check, overstaying of visa issue......if the UAE's crime figures include these it would certainly skew the figures. Crime rates and and an accurate assessment of their impact on public safety do depend on the local interpretation of what is deemed crimininal. <em>edited by Livelytrish on 19/08/2011</em>

What hobbies does he have? If he reads, a first edition of his favourite author (unless of course it happens to be Shakespeare of course.....unless you are a mega millionaire!) If he plays any sport, there are lots of websites with memorabilia....maybe something from the year of his birth, or you could always get a printout of a newspaper printed on the day he was born. Otherwise, maybe just take him out for a lovely dinner a deux.......perhaps on the Bateau Dubai. And if he has a sense of humour, buy him a Zimmer with "go faster stripes"......as a friend did for me on my sixtieth!!!

JoyceB........well done you for your dedicated work for so many years for a great, worldwide movement for girls and young women. I just feel very sad that you should have to defend the Guiding Movement on here............. reading nit picking about words like "duty" or arguing allegiances is just all so dispiriting. Duty........means learning about the importance of responsibility...........and the concept of allegiance is the recognition of something meaningful outwith the boundaries of self. Which is something sadly lacking in today's society.

it's got nothing to do with corporal punishment or harsher prison sentences......it's a philosophy which denies the need for the social contract described by Hume....which in essence equate to empathy ......or the innate moral law Kant believed existed in the few.....and needs to be taught to the rest. I agree with Livelytrish that it has nothing to do with corporal punishment or harsher prison sentences, which only serve to address individual behaviours. But I'm not sure I agree with Kant that only the few have an innate moral compass. I believe we are all born to know love and compassion, but our natural goodness is eroded by families, behaviours, institutions, societies, and economic systems that fail to nurture that goodness. One can't just blame the parents. They suffered the same woundedness. And do it goes . . . In response............................ I should have made myself clearer.......Kant held up the ideal of innate moral law.........but also the need to use rational thought to work towards an understanding thereof. Which requires a degree of education and directed thought. And love and compassion...........are not quite the same thing as an ability to differentiate between right and wrong. There will be many many mothers in London just now acting on love and compassion..........and ignoring the moral law which should dictate turning in their children. As for woundedness.......I don't recall a crime wave involving the children of the Holocaust survivors...... What is going on now in London is a bad case, not of woundedness, nor real deprivation, but of the "Because I'm worth it" disease. <em>edited by Livelytrish on 13/08/2011</em>

Even the slightest change in the water's ph can be fatal. I don't believe that normally law abiding ppl will loot from a vandalised shop under any circumstances - even the couple who rode off on new bikes... there has to be a missing piece of their moral make-up.. Yes.it's called a moral compass........... of which at least two generations of children from all races, classes or socio economic groups have been deprived by a pernicious doctrine of moral relativism and "all must have prizes" culture. And before anyone starts, it's got nothing to do with corporal punishment or harsher prison sentences......it's a philosophy which denies the need for the social contract described by Hume....which in essence equate to empathy ......or the innate moral law Kant believed existed in the few.....and needs to be taught to the rest.
