Salome, which I sympathise with his wife this man knew what he was doing and what would happen if he did not pay. Do the crime and be prepared to do the time. Very helpful advice Tonix, why bother replying? Because she wants to? Duh... Well, she obviously had a very pleasant little rush of Schadenfreude.....not to mention that wonderful glow of self righteousness!

I usually start advertising for homes as soon as possible, usually at 4 weeks, that way there's time to spread the word and have a chance to screen and do home checks. And no way do they go until 8 weeks minimum. A good adopter will wait.

Hey Boomerang, I agree that this young lad could well win it. However, this is my favourite. I think he's brilliant. Warning!!!!! You need to be British to appreciate it I think?! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luGaEShY1MI oh i agree MM - didn't think much of the singing fringe - he sounded flat to me but loved les gibson in the auditions as well - funniest impressionist i've seen in ages !! I do feel sorry for these wannabees with dubious amounts of talent who get sucked in to the Simon Cowell machine, only to be chewed up and spat out again when he's made enough money from them. Susan Boyle was another one, all overrated IMO. Agreed, it seems to be a poisonous mix of cheap sentimentality and a ghoulish freak show.

Call me a grumpy old lady but...............what do the parents of these child performers think they are playing at? 7 year old pianists, Sinatra style crooners barely out of Pampers and now this latest manufactured cutie? Even if any of their "talents" last longer than their precocity, would any normal, decent, sane parent really want a "Child Star" on their conscience? From Judy Garland/Liz Taylor/Michael Jackson/Britney Spears...........need I go on? And before anyone asks - no, I've never seen the show, just clips on the news or in the dear old DM. That was enough. Frankly, apart from it all being in appallingly chavtastic bad taste, I think it borders on child exploitation, if not downright abuse.

They need to make enquiries about becoming 'Not Ordinarily Resident'. They will pay very much reduced National Insurance Contributions, just a few pounds a week, but it means that they retain their rights to pensions, benefits etc. It's much more complex than this but their tax office should be able to help them. They need to make sure that they have enough time/pages on their passports for stamps and entry restrictions. Degrees/marriage/divorce certificates should be notorised or attested and I think that it's much easier to get it done at home. There must be tonnes more stuff but that's all I can think of for now. Paying NI contributions does nowt for expats! LOL Oh yes it does............pension wise at least.

Volteren are a bit harsh for some people tummywise.......was it the pills or the soluble Voltfast? There is always the Voltaren gel, not as effective or fast acting tho. You really, really need to see a good GP tho, they have a full working knowledge of what's available and effective..........but for what it's worth I find Ponstan Forte (OTC in Dubai) pretty good and gentler on the stomach. Won't kill extreme pain, but does take the edge off. <em>edited by Livelytrish on 03/06/2011</em>

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I would and can take painkillers LT, its just I don't really know much about them or any other means of pain relief at this stage, so want to gather together all the opitions before I decide what's best. I have 2 little people to run around after, so I can't take it very easy and my DH just seems to be constantly away, so it doesn't help. This is something I've had for a long time, but just seems to be getting a lot worse and effecting me more and more, I'm just starting to get a bit emotional about it as I don't like the limitations its causing with me and what i can do with my little ones :( sorry just feeling fed up at the mo JS Book in to see your GP and ask about some pain relief, this will tide you over until you see your surgeon. Seriously once you get that new hip you won' know yourself! Dubai London Clinic is a good start if you don;t have a GP here. Oh JS.......please do as Boomerang suggests.........there is nothing to be gained by enduring constant pain. And yes. Dubai London Clinic is exactly what I was going to recommend. And don't say "sorry"........you have every right to be feeling emotional, constant pain is life destroying. best of luck, now and with the operation, as i said in a previous post, I know two people who had surgery for your condition, and it changed their lives. Take care.

BM......JS said she doesn't want to take any painkillers, and that is what I was questioning. And I was suggesting that there are painkillers available without side effects........ but Tramadol ain't one! Addictive and they numb more than just the pain (and don't mix well with the red!!!). Although in extremis, they have their uses. <em>edited by Livelytrish on 02/06/2011</em>

The "Overheard in MacDonalds" thread should be required reading for anyone stepping outside their own door, let alone entering any facility in Dubai. Not a Dubai bash, just stating the simple fact that minimum wage and maximum profit, allied to a fatalistic attitude towards fate (vide the lack of child seat belt use) is an accident waiting to happen.

I agree with many of your points, troublebubble. The said issues would not stop me from taking my kids to MM... indeed - even in soft play areas int eh Uk, where it is highly regulated, no-one would just plonk their toddler in there and go off to have a quiet coffee. I'm going to have to read that thread now! HAK, the key word here is regulated. A place like MM would never be allowed to operate in the form it is now if it were in the UK due to a lack of health and safety standards. It has less to do with parents plonking their children and leaving and more to do with lack of stair gates, open exit doors, no maximum number limitations, and allowing all and sundry to enter the premises to have access to the coffee shop. No the key words are.......remember where you are, and take appropriate extra care. The assumption that any facility in the region will be run according to UK elfin safety standards is dangerous.

You tell her that you will be leaving and she does everything she can to help re-home the animals. She helps you when you are looking to sell all your furniture. She then tells you that she will leave only when I walk out of the door and doesn't want to leave before then but when she does, will go back to her country to start a family. She will stay with me until I decide to leave. God bless her. I love her to bits. Sorry, just needed to say my feelings here. Ain't no one else to say it to! It's called Karma

I'm wondering what your concerns over painkillers is based on...........unless you go down the opiate derived route (which is impossible in UAE anyway) there is nothing inherently dangerous in using appropriate pain relief. I have had a serious degenerative spinal disease since my late teens, plus a form of rheumatoid arthritis, but a mixture of painkillers, physio and a Tens machine (and an adequate supply of red wine) have made my life liveable.....and I'm now in my sixties. I would speak to a doctor you trust, there's nothing brave about enduring pain if you don't have to. And good luck......Perthes is not a pleasant condition, but I have a good friend and a neice who both had successful surgery and have never looked back.

I never said she was being attacked, but I do feel she was being unfairly judged. Anyway, I'm not going to argue over it. Yes each to their own and everyone has a right to their opinion. I just don't get why people feel the need to kick people when they are clearly down. Guess there will always be the Beige Trouser Brigade on every thread. Mountain out of molehill Kellsbells really this is and your post is distracting (and liable to open up) from the issue in hand. And your useful input has been?

You must be joking. Please go back and re read. I was lucky enough, when we had to leave Dubai to have just enough money in the running away fund to pay to bring six animals to Cyprus, only one of which I had actually chosen as a pet......the rest literally were taken in, for the night........to get them off the streets, only no one else wanted them. Should I be congratulated because I was (just) fortunate enough to be able to finance their seat on the plane? I think not, so why should Moo Moo be pilloried for not being in my lucky, lucky position? And pilloried she was. Would it have been more prudent for her to leave them to rot on the street? Sometimes I wonder about people.

Wow, I can't believe some of the replies on this thread. I'm not going to read them all as I fear I may end up with smoke coming out my ears. For what it's worth, I know Moo Moo and I know that since she arrived in Dubai, she has done everything she could for these animals who were either going to be put down, die out on the streets or end up abused. She has opene up her home, let them wreck her sofa's (lol) and spent a small fortune in vets bills and on feeding them. Not to mention the sleepless nights when the cats decided to go walkabout :-) Moo Moo has given them all she can and because of her they all know what it's like to be loved and taken care of. Something very special that not every person is able to do and certainly not every animal in Dubai gets to experience. Of course given the choice she would return home with her whole brood, but unfortunately that's not possible and how dare anyone judge her without knowing the full story. She is now doing the best she can to give these animals another chance at a loving home. NOT abandoning them on the streets like we see so many others doing. Moo Moo, I speak on behalf of the animal community in Dubai... Thank you. Thank you for opening up your home and your heart and giving us a chance. And I second that.............shameful that some people should post such smug, self congratulatory and frankly heartless criticisms of a lovely lady who has always gone that extra mile for animals (and may I add, for fellow Ewers on many many occasions.) NONE of us can never, ever totally idemnify ourselves against random adverse fate, NONE of us can ever say we would never be forced into a situation where we had no option but to leave an animal behind..........unless of course we had chosen to protect ourselves and our comfort zones by always crossing to the other side of the road.

Both my children studied at St Andrews, it's a wonderful university and a lovely town, and yes, there are lots of very charming little villlages near by. Rentals are expensive though! Dundee is a big city, and frankly it has big city problems, obviously not all over, but my advice would be to stay South of the Tay. It does have a good nightlife, but then so does St Andrews, and it's only twenty minutes away.

Many years ago as students talking about life death and reality after entirely too many beers.....someone came up with the best definition of friendship. A friend is someone you can call from jail in Turkey...........and they will bail you out. Even if you haven't spoken in twenty years. Friendship is not about Hallmark holidays. OP, your friend is obviously having a hard time, and is angry with you because she's watched entirely too many TV shows about the Dubai dream. Personally, I'd tell her to get off my back, maybe you can do the same, but nicely?

In which case...........was it my new MGB GT that triggered my boy's most unfortunate year of being a little red car called George? I often wondered. It was a real pain, but he grew out of it (and I didn't take him to the garage for regular oilchanges, or have him fitted with twin exhausts, in spite of his pleas) It was what we used to call a phase. Also,Boomerang, whilst you are Googling, look for the (mercifully few) cases of people who have had gender reassessment as a result of childhood/teenage issues.....and subsequently regretted it? And been very angry with the parents/professionals whom they believe took them more seriously than they'd intended? NOT to dismiss those very real cases of gender misalignment, but sometimes the very young and angry ask for things they don't really intend.

You know.......it's a little bit odd, that when the OP first posted, only a couple of us were willing to post our reservations, and then not totally openly about the validity of the thread. or the wisdom of its content.. In fact, even though I had tried to phrase my reservaions quite cautiously, another poster suggested I should shut the @@@@ up. And several others hinted the same. But now that the consensus seems to be that she's busted..............it's ok to pile in.

one of those posters who everythign had happened to...... just a bit too much "look at me" attention seeking Yes. had to sit on my hands not to say that on the thread. Drama queen was the other phrase I was desperately trying NOT to type. i came close by telling her i thought she sounded bitter, which i think she did. Sorry, but it all seemed to be more about the mother's angst than the child's...terribly sad that the family has to live with so many issues though (whether they be those portrayed on here or different ones)... Yes, all very sad. Poor poor kid.

I'm going to disaggree. She (the poster) has only been posting for a short while but her story has been completely consistent across the board with whatever topic she chooses to post on. My only concern/worry/niggle would be the sheer volume of personal info she posts, and that would be more out of concern for her rather anything else I am afraid. I don't think it's a deliberate trollish wind up, more likely a rather unwell poster.

When considering what movie to see we always read reviews, hangover 2 is rated 15 which means it will have a more adult theme, so you have to be prepared for bad language, violence and or sexual content and or nudity, if its a 15 the chances are it wont be your sort of movie by the sound of it. We went to see it this weekend and loved it, but we had seen 1 and knew what to expect, so we weren't shocked by it, what upset me was the amount of young children in there, my children would not even been allowed in the cinema at home by the staff and it beyond me why they allow little people in. My sister wont see anything other than kid rated movies as they hate explicit content, violence and bad language, sadly today a lot of movies are full of it. Hope you have a better movie outing next time round. I read the reviews............that's an adult movie??? Pubescent not very bright male movie possibly, but "adult"??

Well, I had my tonsils out on February 3rd 1959 (I remember the date because it was my ninth birthday.........what kind of sadistic appointments secretary didn't notice that?) and those were the days when if a kid kicked up, he or she would have probably been given a slap by both parents and the nursing staff, so I would have just gone along with it. All I can remember is that I was very, very sick afterwards, but then they gave me icecream.....which was a rare treat. and then I went back to sleep..and next day I went home. I was quite simply told, a couple of weeks in advance that it was getting done, that they would "put me to sleep" and I wouldn't have a runny nose or sore throats any more. There was no fuss, no drama, it was just going to happen. I don't recall being particularly frightened, I had far far worse at the dentists. Flash forward twenty and then thirty years............both my children had it done - I just explained that it was no big deal. they would feel better afterwards, the only real difference over the intervening years is that I was able to be there when they went into theatre and there when they came round. Essentially......... the key is NO DRAMA.............and especially not from the parents. Just tell her they are going to mend her throat, it won't hurt and she will get a really nice bowl of ice cream and whatever toy she has been bending your ear for. And try to keep your own horrors under control. Good luck!
