So.......how do you explain MRS (Mistress abbreviated) as the title for married women? Not power per se, more a mark of respect. Incidentally, at my very correct school in England, the French mistress was known as Madame.......... She is the mistress of her household. That's why, in the UK, only nobility get referred to as ma'am (shortened form of Madam = Madame = My Lady), unless you want to mock them by inferring that she has designs above her station, in which case it's "she's a right little madam"... highly ironic then, the favoured phrase of maids here... Anyhow, in France, it's slightly different, in that people don't call each other Mister or Mistress, but Monsieur (translates as My Sir/ Sire) or Madame (My Lady, as discussed)... The difference harks back, again, to the fact that the invaders who became the English nobility actually weren't that posh, but to the native Brits, sounded so... exotic. The meat-words are testimony to that really... In French it'd be "ah, je veux manger du mouton!" which the direct English translation would be "ah, I want to eat some sheep"... but to the up'n'coming masses it transformed into a word disassociated with the actual farm animal. Thank you for the lesson in Norman French.

no... the French is the feminine form of "master" - as in master of the house, school master, etc..., which is "maitre"... so "maitresse", or "mistress" in English (which has French roots due to the fact that the Normans conquered us in 1066 and so most of the nobility was French, or at least spoke fluent french, so by consequence, French words were considered rather swish and entered common English language (just like "beef" (=boeuf), p0rk (=porc) and mutton (=mouton)...) So mistress is just the female master... nothing kinky! lol Isn't that wot I said?

Yes but you wouldn't say the French Mistress though. You would say French teacher. Mistress tends to be used on its own in English and is not very common nowadays: Mrs is short for.................Mistress. A term of respect for a married woman, or a woman in a position of respect. And it means the same as Madame................which in English has equally risque connotations. edited by Livelytrish on 13/04/2011

Interest rates are always tricky, because higher interest rates encourage saving and discourage spending [on credit'>... which is not good in difficult times. I have friends on interest-only mortgages and they could see themselves in a pickle (hopefully not!) and if they did, they wouldn't be the only ones. People who bought in the last 5 or so years would have mortgaged up to the max, so the current financial climate with job losses et all and now the interest rate hike could well see repossessions... and fewer purchases. ... but prices coming down would be no bad thing at all for first time buyers coming back from a decent job abroad... Just wanted to say that I have NEVER in over the last 10 years felt encouraged to save cash, given the meagre interest rates in savings accounts (even tax free ISA ones) and inflation. Simply no incentive to do so. Nonsense, until two years ago it was possible to get a very good return on savings..........i was averaging 7% with a variety of fixed term deposits. Now..........2% is about the best.

Moustique..........the real pain is having paid 10 or II% all my working life on a mortgage and/or business loan......at one point 13%............but now, when I should be looking at living off the interest on the money I broke my back to amass......suddenly it's worth less than nothing. Now, that is PAIN.

I am loving this thread...........I must be the dream MIL..........I would never, ever, ever, even think about giving my DIL advice, she's a grown woman, she's smart, she's educated, she has all the same bits and instincts God gave to me - and all women......so why on earth should I stick my oar in? And, the weird thing is..........sometimes I feel guilty because I don't fulfil the stereotype? As for my DD........as I tell her, kiddo, I've done my time........now it's your turn. It's been really very cold here for the time of year, this last week around 15c in our village which is quite near Pissouri, but we are in the hills. It's generally warmer down on the coast by several degrees. Was down shopping in Pissouri on Saturday and it was quite pleasant tho not exactly sunbathing weather. Check out weatherunderground for a ten day forecast, using Paphos as your location and subtract a degree or so. Having said that, two weeks ago it was 29c even up here! Just typical Spring weather really! But the spring flowers and blossom are amazing.......and everything is soooo green. Enjoy your trip.....any more questions give me a shout.

Maybe this is a dumb question but why don’t they lower the fences as this seems to be the place where most jockeys and horses are injured or killed. Or just limit the number of runners.

SW, are you saying we should still let students smoke in class? God yes! You ride Ceese and you know the risks, should you not ride because you may fall off or the horse may break it's leg while you are riding it? And the horses, SW........they calculate the risks also? Don't we as humans have a certain duty of care here? Do you want the sarky horsey response or the PC one to that question? Well the mood you are in tonight................I certainly can't expect anything sensible. FFS Don't you get it? I'm pro horse racing..........I just think the GN has become something bigger, uglier and infinitely less sporting than it once was. And a great deal less humane.

Oh I'm sure there was but it was just part of the whole thing, it has actually got safer over the years and been changed to be *safer*, lots of research etc. But now it appears to have become more about what women wear or don't rather and be picked to peices by the let's change everything brigade just because we can. Oh rollocks SW it hasn't got any safer.............yesterday showed that. I know exactly where you are coming from, with the horrors of the PC and elfin safety brigades, but please don't let it blind you to reality. The National could, and should be made safer, and still remain a splendid tradition, accidents will always happen, but both horses and riders deserve better than being turned into sacrificial victims in a war of cultures. Safer jumps and a smaller field do not mean per se opening the gates to the PC mob. Tho it would be nice to keep the other lot out.

Has it occurred to the OP (and everyone else on this thread) that this might just be a ploy by the reporting maid for a payrise? Yeah, no. My maid has been with us for several years, and before she was with us worked with my neighbors for 5 years and has always beyen fantastic and is just not that kind of person. I know, my friends know, and anyone who meets her knows that just wouldn't be the case. In fact, I take it even more seriously because she's not even one to gossip, she never talks about other maids, or what people get paid or anything like that, she was genuinely upset by what she's seen from these maids. Anyway, I've put my email up for anyone who this may personally concern and they're more than welcome to contact me and suss it all out for themselves. As I mentioned, I only posted it as I thought if it were me I'd want to know. In which case I repeat the apology contained in my last post.

Has it occurred to the OP (and everyone else on this thread) that this might just be a ploy by the reporting maid for a payrise? Hardly... especially if she's saying that 3k a month still doesn't guarantee the the child will be well looked after! Give the woman some credit - she's a human being and it obviously struck a nerve to see little children being maltreated, as I'd hope it would to any of us. Or........she's trying to tell the OP just how caring SHE is..... and doing it for less money. Sorry if I'm coming across a cynical but whenever anyone tells me that another person is cr@p at their job, but earns more....alarm bells go off. And before one maid tells on another.......there is either a personal feud going on, or a scam somewhere. But of course there are always exceptions to every rule, so apologies to OP's maid if I am wrong.

So if not for jumps like the ones where the horses died, it'd just be another race. Great argument. It's not the Grand National unless there's a considerable risk of killing your horse? Charming. edited by DubaiCat on 10/04/2011 No DC, horses die in all sports whether over a jump or not, its a fact of life not charming. Point entirely missed. You said jumps like Becher's Brook 'made' the Grand National (with apologies if I haven't used the exact words) and from that, I understand you mean the excitement of the risk makes the race stand out from others. Therefore, 'it's not the Grand National if there isn't a considerable risk of killing your horse' isn't far off the mark, no? I'm not against racing per se. I just don't see why the jumps have to be made so difficult horses end up dying trying to get over them. Eaxctly so. It would still be a great race without the carnage. edited by Livelytrish on 10/04/2011

LT horses race all over the world in all sorts of temperatures, you know as well as I that the first weekend of April in Liverpool can be 2 foot of snow, heavy rain or occasionally warm. Really they can cope with the heat, horses come in from all over the world to race in Dubai and they come from - 10 to 35 degrees and race within the week. The vet teams and care on stand by are phenomenal and this aspect is being played by the media, to what end i don't know. TB are not draught horses and can cope and adapt with many different weather conditions. 30 horses have died in the last 10 years at the Cheltenham festival, but the media has not spun the spin it does on the GN. Racing is a hard sport on everyone in it, horses die, people die. If i told you some figures for endurance races you would be really shocked, yet no media dares to critique that. Where do we start and where do we end? Do you really wish the UK to become even more of a namby pamby state where no one can compete in anything or traditional sports are stopped? edited by Sticky Wicket on 10/04/2011 No, I don't and you should know better than to ask such a stupid question. But, you can't compare Cheltenham's track record.......with that of just one race...........which by anyone's standard is overcrowded, with jumps not fit for such a full field. And, these are not racehorses , they are just really posh hunters. And as such, not used to flying round the world in a/c planes. For goodness sake, we've all seen Nationals run in the snow. They are winter horses. This is not the flat. Believe it or not I really, really, really would like to see our traditional sports preserved, but not turned into TV spectaculars and showcases for the get yer t@ts out for the lads brigade.

Lt what is shamefull the fact the vets treated horses post race, like they do everywhere in the world post race? How does anyone think horses race here in 35 degrees heat? Or complete endurance races? Where is all the outrage over endurance? This is media propagated over one race a year, to which no one can be to blame for the weather. As for RSPCA, what have they got to do with it. And to clairfy the oxygen statements, when competing at this level the very best care is organised for the horses and that includes the use of oxygen to those horses who may overheat if it is a warm day. There is oxygen at the last fence and close to the pull-up area. The Jockey Club vets keep a database of horses that are known to need oxygen or need cooling off at the end of races and they give prior warning of any high-risk horses that day and then we can task one of the vets with taking particular care of that horse as it pulls up. Just the same as for human athletes at any sport at this level or any other equine competition held in modern countries. edited by Sticky Wicket on 10/04/2011 Read my post SW. These are horses bred to run in cold weather. Google the history. And where does the RSPCA come in? The carnage every year, that's where. It could still be an amazing race, with a smaller field, and less fiercesome jumps. Cheltenham manages quite well, doesn't it?

I have been horseriding since I was 8 years old and had my own horse from the age of 11 to 18 years old - so I believe I am a "horsey" person. I HATE the Grand National. I am aware that horses can die in all circumstances and that some of them are tragic accidents, one of my close friends and her horse were killed whilst merely walking down a country lane. Do I think all forms of events (dressage, show jumping, eventing, horse racing, etc) should be banned? NO. However, do I think that more can be done to make the Grand National safer than it currently is and reduce the number of deaths? YES! I personally don't like steeplechase forms of horse racing because the odds of fatalities occurring is higher than a flat race and I therefore choose to not watch the race and never will unless they improve the conditions. When the weather has been dry in the UK (which for the last 2 years in the lead up to the race it has) it is one of the fastest steeplechases due to the condition of the track and this in turn leads to even more accidents occuring. It is notorious for having some of the most dangerous fences on the race circuit and it is time to improve these conditions. Some very good points here... but steeplechasing per se is no more dangerous than hunting..which is why steeplechasing evolved. And rarely did horses die steeplechasing, or in point to points..........but the Grand has become a travesty, far too many horses in a crowded field and dangerous jumps. And, it is a winter sport...these horses are geared to run in the cold....not in weather balmy enough for the cream of Merseyside to trot out their t@ts........ No wonder the winner, and several other horses needed oxygen. Where is the RSPCA in all this? A shameful silence. edited by Livelytrish on 10/04/2011

Could someone explain the term "chippie class warriors"? I think its mainly used in politics, when politicians from a working class background what to attack the posh ones. Not sure if its chippy as in chip shop or chippy as in Carpenter. It's chippy as in "chip on the shoulder".

Seems to me that there are far better ways of flaunting one's higher moral standards than holding up the checkout. I did not read the posts of those who managed without a packers as flaunting ones higher moral standards. I read them as those who either preferred to pack themselves or see the packer as a bonus. I did not read the posts of those who use or even insist upon packers as flaunting their standards. I read them as those who believe it is part of the supermarket service they are paying for or those who appreciate the kindness and help. With the exception of the poster who thought we needed to consider the mental state or goings on in the day of a rude and agressive person (wtf?) most seem to agree that the behaviour of the shopper was over the top. I think most agree that following the OP into the car park because she did not back her point of view was not necessary. Using a packer or not doesn't define what kind of person you are but behaving like an ar$e does. That should have been perfectly obvious to everyone except those posters who need to prove their superior moral status (aka chippie class warriors). Which was my point. The woman in the OP's post was completely out of line. Barking or bad manners, who knows, but she was completely and totally out of order. However, packing one's own groceries however does not convey instant sainthood.

I loved having packers.........and I imagine so do the store owners. Less queues at the checkout, faster throughput, happier shoppers and more profits. Why do so many posters on here equate this with some kind of exploitation? It is quite simply much, much more time and motion effective than having shoppers do the dance between loading the conveyer, and dashing to the other end to pack.........especially when it's an anally retentive "everything in the right bag" customer. Seems to me that there are far better ways of flaunting one's higher moral standards than holding up the checkout.

SS, I'm intrigued when you say that the IB and A level programmes "produce very different students". What would you say were the differences, and are those differences not already there before the student decides which course to take? IYSWIM? ETA: The post I'm answering has disappeared. edited by simpleasabc on 03/04/2011 I am not a fan of a kid taking Brit Cur all his student life and then switching to IB only in the final years. The principles and learning perspectives of the IB is grounded right within the PYP. The differences are evident already by the age group of 8-9 year olds and these differences inlcude the way of thinking, the way of learning, researching, what they are producing etc. Civic engagement, youth voice, agency of the child, children as meaning producing beings, photo-elicitation, photographic narrative, digital storytelling are a big part of the IB. All these provide an opportunity for internationally mobile students to design multimodal narratives symbolizing and characterizing their lives, interests and socio-cultural identities thus providing them an alternative opportunity to literacy learning in a completely different way to the Nat Cur of England and Wales for e.g. I'm obviously frightfully dim..............could you please translate all that jargon and buzz words into simple, plain, and understandable English? As an educational dinosaur, I'm afraid your phrases such as youth voice.....agency of the child etc etc really leave me holding my head in my hands.

The cat got out, I chased it, grabbed it by it's bum and got myself tangled in the bougainvillea bush. I have a nice big, red scratch down the side of my face and it's very sore. Plus, I'm starting to feel sick. A friend tells me it's a poisonous plant. Do I need to go and get a tetanus shot? Or am I just being melodramatic? Even if it were poisonous, a tetanus shot would do no good. Tetanus is a very (and mercifully rare these days) infective agent, most usually carried in horse manure or soil treated with the same. Bouganvillea is not poisonous per se but it is an irritant. Hydrogen Peroxide on the scratch and a large gin should sort out all symptoms.
