I bet you get great moussaka there though! Oh yes, but not takeaway, and you know, sometimes, it would be great........especially with DH home for several months. The old "what's for breakfast/lunch/supper, sweetie? is doing my head in. Introduce to kitchen.............thought you would have learnt by this point! I like my kitchen the way it is, unburnt.

Am green with envy, mine has just gone out with the dogs and the only thing he's likely to bring back is more ticks off the goats. Love this place but our nearest Chinese would be an hour plus down the mountain, over the hills and far far away ..............even have to knit my own pizzas, and that's hard after a vase or three.

We are off there on our holidays in June been looking for a car from Larnaca ridiculously expensive tried hertz but they are looking for over GBP 500 for a two week vacation seems very high or am i just out of sync with the costs over there these days been about 4 years since i was last there anyone know of any reasonable places to hire a car, would it be cheaper to do it when we arrive at the airport? Regency They have a website, best to book in advance in high season, they are much cheaper than Herz etc and very helpful Failing that I can do you a broomstick and cat ;) bats are extra. Edited to add, this is a long running SW joke.........but seriously try Regency Car Hire, they haven't let us or any visitors down and are much cheaper than the multinationals. edited by Livelytrish on 31/03/2011

Heriot Watt is a highly respected institution in the UK. Since its highly respected, it's worth looking into it and seeing whether or not the Dubai one has the same standards as the UK. The problem with doing an MBA here is you pay a lot and in most cases get inferior teaching. If you're only doing it for a piece of paper, and they're an official branch then it might be an okay option. Strathclyde one is quite good as they bring in their lecturers from their main campus in scotland every few weeks, and the Woolongong one is good too, although I don't think they bring in lecturers. I would steer clear of another well known Australian institution here, don't know if I can say the name, but they use some under qualified teachers on their MBA program and still charge a fortune There do seem to be a fair number of educational "franchises" in UAE.

We've been to the States a few times and are always astounded by the reaction we get from some people when we say that we're from Scotland. We were in "the sticks" so to speak in Maryland and a number of people wondered how long it took us to get there and "did Scotland really have planes" ????? They weren't joking! We had a lovely time and met some amazing people but their knowledge of the world outside the US was a shock to us. Really not having a go but there were the questions about having electricity, did we live in a castle and so on. We have also met Americans on holiday in Scotland who are completely different. In the same token, I know people here who have never set foot outside their own town or county who have little knowlege or strange percetions of the wider world. One woman was insistent that I had to wear an abaya and walk behind DH while I was in Doha. No amount of telling her the opposite was the case convinced her otherwise! :D Well, that's a wonderful reinforcement of the stereotype.

JS, I'm sorry, I don't know what to say, except that I feel for you. I'm glad that at least, you have your older brother, who seems to understand and be there to help out. Is it not possible for you to take a holiday back home to see your mother and when you're there, buy her stuff specifically for herself, don't give her money so she can't give it to your little brother? BTW, it is really not unusual for the youngest son to be treated in this way, by both parents, so don't think you've done something wrong, you haven't. Congratulations, too, on what you have achieved and on being able to support your mother financially in the first place. Very wise post Simple......to the OP, some mothers just can't help themselves, for them the sun will always shine on one child. You have been and are being a very good daughter, shame she can't be a better mother. And one day you will be repaid by the love of your own children, think of it as just paying it forward.

@Sticky Wicket & Livelytrish HUH? Bite the hand that feeds me? Last time I checked, I pay them (the government), so I think it's the other way around. I feed them, so that they can do however they wish with my tax dollars. And my comment was a lighthearted poke at bornconfused...did you miss the ;)? I'm one of the posters that constantly gets teased about my "typical American" traits as I post about racial comments and how Americans are ragged on...so which is it. Am I too American or am I not American enough? Jeez... The country which nurtured you, educated you, gave you the freedom and safety to say and think what you like..........and you think you PAY them? You have a strange strange sense of the social contract. Shame on you. But then I seem to recall a post in which you made it clear that you regard passports as a right rather than a privilege. Again, shame.

That is how it always is here. If it goes wrong anywhere in the world why not blame the Americans? On what grounds have the US, UK and France go in to Libya? As a UN mission. Like they needed or wanted UN permission. They only use UN banner when it suits them, and ignore it when it suits them too And not only did AL decided on "no fly zone", it also appears everyone waited for them first..So it looks like coordinated action of all nations.I have a feeling Gaddafi has no good intentions for his ppl, especially rebels. How can this action be looked upon so negatively, i don't now..I'm glad to see world is taking action and helping one nation. edited by Goose on 20/03/2011 Because some posters on here view everything thru the filter of their rabid anti Americanism. There is another study that was conducted here differentiating between type 1 and type 2. Offhand I can't remember what it said or where I can find it, but I do remember being shocked that type 2 was becoming more common in children. As I said.........junk food.

but also noting that the top ten have fairly small populations,....which would therefore affect their percentages and shove them to the top of the list, despite other countries may be (my assumption) more diabetics? It is based on the percentage of the adult population not the number of individual cases therefore the population size is irrelvant. eg - Cook Islands has an adult population of 50 people and 2 are diabetic so the diabetes percentage is 4%. Kenya has an adult population of 5100 and 204 are diabetic so the percentage is 4%. Larger population. Same percentage. A smaller population would make any genetically linked condition more prevalent, as in Type 1 Diabetes. Since this study does not seem to differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 (which is most frequently associated with obesity) it really is meaningless. But common sense and an observant walk round any mall in UAE would explain why the country scores so highly. Junkfood, junkfood, junkfood.

Thank you very much ladies. I feel now I have a clearer approach to advise my friend on this matter without appearing that I am taking the ex's side. Yeah...her resentment toward the ex has obviously clouded her judgement and most importantly her feeling toward her hsbd. I hope I could get through to her before it's too late. If you want to maintain a friendship with her, perhaps you should just say "I'm sorry, I can't get involved on this one"... Unless of course she accepts that you disagree with her.... I'm with DRose on this one, I really feel for this boy. He does not deserve this... Agreed. poor boy........but I'm surprised that no one has questioned the actions (or motivations) of the boy's mother. She is, in effect abandoning her vulnerable son.... after 18 years in order to "kickstart her career". But, whatever she intended, she has probably well and truly stuffed OP's friend's marriage.

Dear GoldinGlitterPunk...........I have read quite a few of your posts.........I believe I am right in thinking that you and your siblings very recently lost both your parents? Quite apart from the stress of suddenly becoming overnight, the responsible adult for several other young, wounded and vulnerable people, you share their same catastrophic grief. On top of which you are a relatively young mother of a child who has some developmental delay? And, you are considering moving to one of the world's most unforgiving cities..........you may feel you have made many friends, and perhaps a few of the people you have swapped posts with wil actually materialise in real time, but please remember EW is just cyberspace. Please, please do not for a moment think that Dubai will be an easier or better place than where you are......and please, give yourself and your siblings a chance to grieve, and to readjust to a new reality, in the place where you are all at least reasonably settled and familiar. Take the time being offered, stay in London.......and just let the dust settle on your lives. There will be time enough for adventures later. :) yeah, I feel like thats a big reason I just don't want to move right away. DH thinks that it might be better. I'm trying to decide if I have enough points to bring to the table or if I'm being childish and throwing a tantrum for no reason. No tantrum, just being reasonable...........tho it does sound as tho your DH can't cope with the reality of your situation....is he the one who wants run away to Eldorado? This huge and unexpected responsibility is a truly dreadful situation for both of you........but he married you, he needs to step up to the plate and stick by you, help shoulder the burden, and allow you space to mourn. Dubai will not solve anything for any of you. If anything, it will only add to the stress. Stay where you are, and take time and space so you can all start to heal. Very best wishes and good luck.

Yes many times, only occasionally problems with older abused dogs with behavioural issues. A puppy will present no such difficult, and in fact will be a better bet healthwise than any of the imported in bred puppies available here Take a pup, will mean one less poor little homeless doggie and a lifetime of love for you.....plus a lot of good karma.

It's something to take very seriously as there have been many studies and profiles linking animal cruelty in children to violent criminals as adults. Additionally, some children act out abuse that they themselves are subject or witness to. Animal abuse in children is a very serious thing to watch. I know it's always tough to involve the police, you don't want to make the wrong move and ruin someone else's life or to make trouble for yourself. But it is definitely something to be aware of and potentially act on. edited by gleekfamily on 01/02/2011 Yes and it's a good point you're making. BUT the police here simply do not care about animal cruelty and that's a simple fact of this place. The OP will be wasting her time. Better to recommend the parents take the child to see a psychologist. Precisely. You HAVE remember where you are.

I know this may sound extreme, but if you don't get a positive response from the child's parents...might you consider talking to the police? I mean in a more preventative way...who knows what could happen if the child decides to one day push your child into the pool or into a wall. Just ask that the police officer speak to the parent and child about the consequences of such destructive and dangerous behavior (kind of like a "scared straight" tactic). I know it really does sound extreme, but it's worrisome how many people snap and cause mass destruction (ie Arizona last week, Columbine, Virginia Tech before that)...and people who knew these kids said something was wrong with them, yet no one went with their gut and talked to the police. You never know the impact you can have, the lives you can save by stepping in. I hear what you are saying......even if it is stretching the point a bit.........but seriously, what reaction do you honestly think the OP would get at the police station? They would have NO idea what she was talking about, and worse, not efen begin to understand why the child was in the wrong. Example......a close friend, who had followed and got car details for the driver who had laughingly chucked a tiny kitten into SZ Road where it had been finally fatally hit before my friend could get back to it...........was told at Bur Dubai Police Station.........with a sneer and lots of guffaws from the peanut gallery.............what do you want us to do, charge him for littering? Remember where you are. It's actually haram to injure / harm animals... It may well be..............but that is certainly one ruling which does not seem to stick.
