Well, perhaps wisest not to squabble about the source of the news, and concentrate our thoughts on a hopeful outcome for survivors, and a quiet prayer for any more souls who have lost their lives in a week of so many heartbreaking tragedies Having spent most of a lifetime working in newsrooms I can assure you that journalists take no glee in reporting these horrors, and if it looks bad when it first comes in ...........it rarely gets better. Journalists don't have to make it up in cases like this...........the reality is far too often much worse. But I agree that sometimes forums like these are not the most appropriate place to announce the news, but it is a natural human response to share, for good or bad. In any case, RIP those who have lost their lives this week, everywhere.

You are quite right Maroosh, obviously nothing mindless enough on the telly or not enough homework. And yes, there are unnoticed and unmarked deaths all around us in this world, let's just hope that this remembered loss of life reminds people all lives are precious and to be mourned . And that any small candle such as this serves to do that.

OP.................I don't know where your home country is, but I can promise you that there are no more nasties in Dubai than wherever you come from. No more and no less, little critturs of many types are all around us, and I wonder why this has suddenly become a deal breaker for Dubai. It sounds to me as though you are unable to express your lack of confidence about moving to an unfamiliar territory and are dressing it up in something you feel more comfortable about voicing. Rather than stressing about the potential for encountering rats or cockroaches you need to ask yourself why you don't feel as threatened at home, and then identify why you are so anxious about leaving.

Perhaps the thumbs down were because you mistook the OP's condition for something else? "Housemaid's Knee" is a vernacular term for Bursitis in the knee. like "Tennis Elbow" when it occurs in the elbow. The OP was describing calloused skin on her knees, a cosmetic rather than medical condition. For which she might be best advised to use a salt and lemon scrub followed by a good moisturiser. or to buy a product marketed for hard skin on the feet or heels, Dr Scholls make several.

It is possible to rent a car in the South and drive it over the border, although many companies do not allow it. If you want to take the risk of doing so, fine, but please be aware that the insurance cover for the North will be only 3rd party and if you have any breakdowns or accidents you will be responsible for the entire cost of recovery back to the other side. It does seem ridiculous but you must remember that it is only a few years since the border was even opened, this is a tiny island but there was a very bitter confrontation here in 1974 and for some people bad feelings still exist. The pedestrian border crossing at Ledra Palace is an unsettling experience, there is a walk of several hundred yards through "No man's land" still policed by the UN, the ruined buildings with bullet holes are a very evocative reminder of those troubled times. A reasonable acceptance by most Cypriots of the de facto truce means that life goes on peacefully on both sides of the green Line, but TRNC is not recognised by any other country in the world, bar Turkey , and the legalities of many things are still problematic. Don't let this put you off visiting this lovely island, North or South, but don't run the risk of spoiling a wonderful holiday by ignoring the realities of a rather bizarre status quo. Organise a pick up from Larnaca and back, then hire a car in the North, what you will spend on the airport trip will be recouped on the cheaper car hire rates in TRNC.

I just got back from two weeks staying with friends outside Girne (Kyrenia). I live in the South which is lovely but TRNC is to my mind much more unspoiled and the food is better! Also everything is much cheaper than on "our" side! Best to fly direct from Dubai with Emirates and taxi to the North (most hotels will organise that from their end, beware of the Larnaca taxi bandits, they can be quite outrageous in their prices!)

Here's a thought...............instead of getting outraged on behalf of others (who may well feel more than capable of expressing their feelings, were they so inclined) perhaps concentrate on the real meaning of Ramadan? A small act of kindness or a gift to charity would mean a great deal more than the competitive cultural "sensitivity" exhibited on this forum every Ramadan.

Dubai does have natural gas so it is possible that we are just getting a whiff on the breeze. I have smelled it twice over the last year and we are pretty far out of the city. Natural gas does not have an odor, that is why an additive is introduced before it is used as fuel, in order to alert people to leaks, which do not poison as such. If introduced to a totally enclosed space then asphyxia would eventually occur as oxygen would be displaced, but the main danger from natural gas would be explosion caused by a spark. IF natural gas were leaking into the atmosphere there would be no odor and no risk of either explosion or asphyxia, if there is any odor I would suggest once more it is coming from poorly constructed drains.

Wasn't another war criminal prosecuted at an old age? I do remember reading something about Milosevic although he was in his 60's In the cases emanating from the war in the former Yugoslavia, both the defendants and witnesses were still relatively young and the trials took place less than 20 years after the events. Time doesn't lessen the crime, but it does lessen the reliability of the evidence.

I'm deeply uncomfortable about both the recent prosecutions in UK and those of Nazi war criminals. In both instances the burden of the evidence is based on recollection of years ago, and in the UK assault trials, with little or no corroboration. In the case of the aged prison guards or SS officers, there is the additional factor that most of the highest ranking or most notorious individuals are either dead (in which case they are facing a far higher court) or have already been prosecuted. I rather wonder about the real motivation of the prosecutors, going after the smallest of fry nearly 70 years after the events. Perhaps it is easier than investigating more recent crimes, and bringing their perpetrators to justice.

Now hang on a minute there ladies - there is a BIG difference between watching ntently...............and blatantly staring. And anyone who has spent any time in the region has experienced the latter, it goes with the territory, there are many cultures colliding, including those in which men never see an uncovered woman until they marry.. And given the demographic of workers and service staff, there is bound a be a preponderance of that group. The OP didn't make the best case for her argument, but I suspect there is a real sense of discomfort behind her post. Another poster described her complaint as akin to complaining about a doctor looking at one's body, however there are some doctors who cross the line in their behaviour. It's entirely possible that the lifeguards in question are enjoying their job a little too much, my only practical suggestion is that the OP change her swimming venue, wear a less revealing costume, or grow a thicker skin. But a little more understanding of the OP's discomfiture might be kinder, after all none of us were witnesses to whatever caused it.

BUT does he make me laugh? Even when I want to weep? And the other............and perhaps the most important thing...................when he is old, and if he has a stroke, will you be able to clean him up..............and do it with love? And can you imagine him, like that..............and you still thinking he is beautiful? If you can, then that is love.

Marroosh.............I know you will be outraged to hear this, but I'll say it anyway (and believe me, with the kindest intentions) but it is obvious that you have a very idealistic dream about the culture you have so determinedly adopted. You were born into the kind of personal freedoms which many women who read this site were not, and yet you seem determined to deny them. You had that choice, I honestly wonder why you feel the need to renounce them so aggressively. However, that is your private affair. But, I think that sometimes, on threads like these, you should sit on your hands, because you have very little to contribute in a positive or helpful way.

I think it's what is known as a "perfect storm". New system, peak UK holiday period..............and that after five years of belt tightening in the UK. I would imagine that a great many people are now booking holidays after a few years of not feeling financially comfortable enough to do so. Hence the rush and the swamping of the system. Might be an idea in future to use the six months in advance proviso in order renew as soon as possible and try to avoid the March - May. But I have to agree, tax paying or not, expats are in a much more vulnerable situation and one would have hoped that there should have been some provision made via local Embassies. One has to wonder what they actually do!!

Sending you a big hug, it's the most awful feeling. My beloved Siamese cat Ruffie (whom some of you old timers may remember getting lost in Dubai for three agonising weeks) died two weeks ago, he is buried here in the garden in the sunlight where he used to sleep. He was only eleven, but had been lurching from one near death episode to another because of a longstanding health issue. Dr Dieter at Blue Oasis treated him at his worst and gave him five good years here in the gentler sun of Cyprus. I miss him unbelievably, he was so much more than a cat. But he gave me so much happiness and friendship, I can only be glad for those years and that helps the grief. I hope it's the same for you, Blondie. xxx

Oh, really, "Buckingham Palace bombed twice and the Queen Mum's shooting lessons" are serious arguments in the discussion :) The UK with their 370 000 of victims in the 2d World War may probably make jokes about Fascism. But Russia with its 26 600 000 human lives lost during the 2d World War certainly doesn't accept any ridiculous comments about Fascism. No one in the UK is making jokes about Fascism. I was merely querying your bizarre suggestion that the British Royal family were in some way sympathetic. Not quite sure how the respective numbers of casualties impacts on the discussion but perhaps you might consider the fact that more Russians died at the hands of Stalin than in any enemy action. Personally I think Prince Charles was unwise to make any comments regarding Mr Putin, however, he was perfectly correct in that events in the Ukraine and the Crimea are an almost exact repetition of actions by Hitler in the Sudetenland. And that is a matter of historical fact, not opinion.

Would you care to expand on that statement? Especially considering that Prince Philip was a decorated naval officer who saw considerable action at sea against the Nazis, that the Queen's uncle died on active service, that Earl Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip was Commander of Allied Forces in the Far East (and had his ship sunk beneath him in combat against the Nazis)........... and.that the Queen herself as a young woman served in the ATS. Not to mention the fact that Buckingham Palace was bombed twice (and the Queen Mum took shooting lessons in order as she put it "That I may go down fighting". Or are you just dragging up the fact that the Windsors are descended from George of Hanover and as a result have many German relatives?

I think you are over reacting. She is as another poster pointed out very early to be "dry", and periods of regression with little accidents are perfectly normal. As for getting angry with her, or sulking, then sorry but that's not the right response, she is still a very small human being with imperfect bodily control. If you continue in that manner, she will most definitely need to see a psychologist at some point in the future.

Ok, I'm going to throw something completely different into the mix here. I totally agree with an earlier poster, you are just plain old fashioned exhausted after having a baby, a scary event with said baby, a houseful of visitors and a toddler to cope with. No need for PMD, you've got enough going on to wipe out Superwoman. BUT, there IS a Post Natal Syndrome going on here and your DH is suffering from it.....it's called PNT. Post Natal Tantrum. Unfortunately there is no point in going to a doctor to fix this one, because there is no cure (apart from a swift kick in the pants) and you are most probably going to have to suck it up and hope that he finally gets over it. I don't know how young you both are, but it sounds as though your DH is very immature and feeling panicked and resentful, perhaps he feels neglected because he doesn't feel included, because he is not the centre of your life at the moment............and he is acting like a brat because he doesn't know what else to do. Childish and pathetic, hence the appallingly hurtful comment about wishing he hadn't married you. He is regretting having to be a grown up now. He probably feels totally overwhelmed by parenthood. That is my take on your situation, not pleasant but not uncommon. I wish I had some advice for you to sort it out easily, but it is going to take time.........and a huge amount of strength and patience on your part. If you have good friends, lean on them, ask them to take eldest out for walks, play time etc, if you can afford help, get a part time maid. Consider part time nursery............do whatever you can to make life easier on yourself. The next few weeks will be tough until Bubs settles into a routine, but it will only be weeks. and during that time, let your DH go on his stag etc etc (he really isn't going to be that much help anyway) and concentrate on yourself and the little ones. Don't waste energy worrying about your marriage, it's not you who is having a problem, it's your idiot husband, Take care of yourself, and remember, nothing lasts for ever, not even the bad times.

I think also you should read the other thread on here asking for advice on moving to Dubai. From the wording of your post it is unclear as to whether you are married to your partner. If you are not, this is going to make it impossible for him to sponsor you, and your son. Not only does this mean that to some extent you will have to live under the radar, and make visa runs, but it will be impossible for you to register your child with a school.

Like many businesses, EK has fallen into the trap of believing in its own hype, the same thing happened with BA years ago, the only people who fell for "the world's favourite airline" were the management (and cabin crew). Too often success leads to arrogance and complacency with a resulting decline in service. But as long as they have the routes, and people willing to pay, no amount of letters will change anything.

Last month some social researchers set up a couple of scenarios in shopping centres with small children acting lost. Over a considerable period of time only one person out of hundreds even approached the apparently distressed children to offer help. How sad it is that a very few highly publicised crimes have turned us into a society which only ever sees the worst, and makes us pass on by out of fear, or selfishness.

Surely there are only a of couple months before the end of year..............when she goes back she won't be a "new" girl any more, you may very well find that all the problems disappear. Certainly that was the case in my children's experience (and in my own, nine million years ago I changed schools probably more often than I changed schoolbags!!) First few months at any new school are hard enough, but add into that another country, it was always going to be difficult. Did they have schools in that era? Well, we did think the teachers were dinosaurs!!
