Princess and cakes, thank you so much for the reassurance, I feel heaps better now knowing it is completely normal. Its just been the once so far so I'll keep an eye on it but not so stressed now, so thank you! :) And thanks for the contact details Amy. Gona try and wait til the 3rd but at least now I've got a back up plan! ;) Princess, its an OB appt iv got on the 3rd with Dr Ibrahim at City. I used to work at City hospital so know Dr Elsa very well and would recommend her without a doubt, the only prob is that she's extremely popular and currently booked up til end of feb, so Im going to see Dr Ibrahim in the interim - he's also pretty good from what I've seem of him, and he's very nice and easy to talk to, so Im happy to see him until I can get an appointment with Dr Elsa. Also I think im happier with the thought of delivering at City as its familiar surroundings for me and I know most of the staff, so sticking well within my comfort zone on this one!! ;)

Thank you for your response PrincessG! Yes, according to the online due date calculators Im around 4weeks ish. Just went in to complete panic mode but didnt want to rock up at A&E looking completely neurotic!! Reassuring to know that you're a midwife (so you prob know way more than most A&E staff here!!) Will just see how it goes over the next few days then and wait til my appointment on the 3rd dec, unless things change significantly that is! And congrats on your pregnancy too! When are you due?

Thanks sami! And big congrats to you too! :) I just found a couple of online due date calculators and its saying my EDD is 22nd July!! Suddenly VERY freaked out! I called to make an appointment with Dr Elsa at city but she's fully booked til end of feb, so tried to book with Dr Ibrahim instead and his schedule isnt open for Dec yet, so on a waiting list for both. Grrrrr!! Early Dec should be ok tho, right?

How many vouchers are there normally for each offer or venue? I've seen somewhere that there are three vouchers for each restaurant etc., but that sounds... too good to be true! Yep! 3 for each place is correct! :D WOW! Yep!! :) We got the family and fine dining books this year and didnt use them much til i had 2 friends over from home the other week and we saved SOOOO much money with things like desert safari, aquaventure, and all the food vouchers we used. Had an amazing dinner at Thiptara at The Palace hotel and with the vouchers it came to just AED90 each for 4 people! We were 4 extremely happy bunnies!! :)

With first DS bought blank card with cute baby face on front and wrapped up little baby outfit. Gave both to him under guise of welcome home present...was very emotional and took couple of seconds for penny to drop - priceless! Awww, that sounds like a beautiful way of doing it! Went mid-week and didnt need to book or wait for a table and the food was lovely. There are also vouchers in the family entertainer book. HTH. xx

Hi Rabiaah, I used to have a 207cc back home and loved it. :) I was soooo gutted when i had to sell it to move here. It was a nice, easy but fun drive. the back seats were a bit annoying but you could squeeze people in for short journeys, but if you're not bothered about the back seats then no probs. I dont really remember about fuel efficiency. Im guessing it must have been pretty reasonable otherwise I'd have certainly remembered if it was really bad, esp as petrol prices being so ridiculous back home. Mine was a manual and petrol. Wouldn't hesitate to get another one. HTH. :)

Im glad she finally decided to take it seriously as I was starting to wonder what kind of friend would be happy to put your livelihood at risk like that! Im so glad she came good in the end! Thanks for all your advice and words of support! :) xx

Oh well, just contacted the Embassy myself, found out the info for her and sent it to her in a rather strongly worded sms stressing that it could pretty much end mine and dh's life here - worst case scenario. ok, maybe a little melodramatic, but hoping it will give her the boot up the butt to get it sorted. hmmm...we'll see! Thank you for all your words of wisdom ladies - was starting to wonder if i was just being a bit of a drama queen about it, so thank you for reassuring me that my concerns are valid! :)

I didnt think of that either Princess! :'( And no, the lease is in my name, so it would be me! Why do people who are supposed to care about you seem to go out of their way to make your life more difficult?! Just out of interest, does anyone know what would happen if she was stopped in the airport? (just so I can hopefully scare her into getting the paperwork sorted!!) Am currently less than impressed with said "friend"!

What a nightmare - but as your husband says, you have done your bit so if she gets stopped and detained then it is her own fault. I would be more concerned for your other friend because if they are travelling together she could also be implicated if there is a problem. Cr*p! I didnt even think of that!! They're both driving me a bit mad at the moment to be honest! The one with the meds is just being downright stupid, and the other one, despite being about to come and stay hasnt been intouch since they booked their tickets nearly 3 months ago! "Med friend" told me earlier that she's just going to go to the GP to get some more meds and the GP will just have to sort everything out there. Problem is tho, in my experience, the GP wont have a clue what is required for here, hence me telling her repeatedly to find out for herself so at least she could tell him! I was really looking forwards to having them over but now starting to dread it. Would like to be excited but instead, just getting stressed out of my tree! Grrrrrr!!! :( edited by LMAO-DXB on 26/10/2011

We stayed there just over 18 months ago. The chalets were ok - quite basic and reasonable space wise. Ours was a little musty, and there were a few bugs roaming around which freaked hubby out so we moved to a hotel room which was better for us, but the nice thing about the chalets was the little outdoor seating area and the BBQ stands. HTH

Hi all! So, long story short....I currently have AXA health Ins. Hubby just changed jobs and I can go onto the company health ins which is with Daman. We're looking to start a family soon and want to know which out of these two health ins companies gives the best maternity cover, so whether to stay with what I already have or to change. Have checked the websites and AXA gives a full break down where as Daman isnt as detailed and after emailing customer services, am still non the wiser! Does anyone have any experience / feedback on either for maternity cover? TIA! :)

Hi Aineb. Its usually pretty difficult to get equipment on loan here and the hospitals dont tend carry a stock to be loaned out to patients as they would in UK, which means buying the things you require. Life Pharmacy and Arabian Home Healthcare pharmacy (think its in Oud Metha) are usually pretty good for these things. you should be able to purchase things like appropriate mobility aids (crutches etc) as should be advised by your physio, from the hospital pharmacy (depending on the hospital) but for things like chair raisers, grab sticks, toilet raisers/rails etc, the above mentioned pharmacies should have what you need. but wait until you've been assessed and advised on what you need rather than just going out and stocking up unnecessarily. As a previous poster mentioned, you will need to avoid bending your hip beyond 90 degrees, (and no crossing your legs either!!) so would be worth measuring the height of the chair you plan to sit in when you're home, and the height of your bed and height of the toilet, so the physio's / OT's can advise if they will need raising. HTH

Hi! I always use tap water for cooking and tea / coffee etc and have never had any problems. I just use bottled water for cold drinks. Our water only ever comes through brownish if we've been away for a few days so I just run it through for a while til it clears, then its fine. I know some people only use bottled water for everything tho. Just personal choice I guess. HTH. :)

Sephora is in Emirates Mall and I think Dubai Mall. I brought my starter kit in the UK through special offer so paid less than normal price. The starter kits here are about 350 aed I think from memory but you get your brushes/concealer/ two shades of foundation and the mineral veil/ DVD and brochure. That's what I got in starter kit so am assuming all the same. I have since brought various other shades of the foundation as you can mix them. Not a makeup artist - interior designer and mum of 5 so have to look good with my work and it needs to be easy with the kids :) Ouch! thats a little bit pricey! Got my sister to check in Debenhams in UK and apparently the starter kits are £48 over there, so might just get it when im home. If you go to Sephora, will they do a makeover for you with the products so you can see if you like it before you buy them? if so is the makeover free or do they charge? and are they any good?? so far i've steered clear of makeup shops over here - they all seem a bit scary!

If you're looking for more of a quiet drink, rather than a clubby atmosphere, The Deck at Byblos in Tecom is licensed and outside, so smoke isnt an issue, but if its still too hot for outside, how about The Terrace at Media Rotana. I think they still have their air-con'd tent up so nice and cool. Im also sick of all the smoke in the clubs so just dont go anymore.

we also went with my hubby and a group of male friends but unfortunately they were in the cigar bar for a while and my friend and I were dancing. our other friend however thinks it may have (in her case) been the bar staff as she was extremely careful with her drinks all night. I would say to find somewhere else that isnt so over priced.

Blends used to be my favorite nightspot, until my friend and I had our drinks spiked there with something particularly unpleasant! we also have other friends who have been there on different occasions and had the same thing happen to them, so if you do go, be extremely careful! And yes, the drinks are very expensive there. Good music there tho, however, i wont be setting foot back in there again!

Hi Ladies. Does anyone have any knowledge of, or know anyone who can advise regarding companies in SAIF Zone from a legal perspective, regarding entitlements of employees leaving a company there. We have the SAIF Zone contract and "helpline" numbers etc, but our situation is all a bit complicated and would like to discuss with someone "Off the record" so to speak for advice. Sorry for lack of details, but the situation is a little sensitive, and you never know who's reading, if you know what I mean, so trying to keep details to a minimum. TIA! :)

Hi Dizzy. We used Allied Pickfords to transport a load of our stuff from UK to here, and they were great apart from on 2 things: 1, we got all the quotations from UK side re: all charges etc, and then Dubai end tried to take the mic and tried making a load of additional charges - we checked back with UK and the charges weren't valid, so after some strong words the charges suddenly disappeared! :) 2, We'd taken out the insurance for our goods and our fridge-freezer was one of the items being transported. It was in almost perfect condition on leaving UK and on arriving in DXB had quite a number of sizable dents in the side of it and looked like the radiator thing on the back had been bent so had to get it checked by a hotpoint man over here. Wanted to claim the costs back on the ins but AP were not willing to put the claim thru, initially, until we had some more strongly worded conversations and I advised that I would slate them on every expat forum i could find if they didnt.....they put the claim through and it was paid out! :D Apart from that, they were very good. they packed everything well, and everything else came in perfect condition. they kept us updated with regular emails on the progress of the shipment and then unpacked everything and got rid of all the rubbish when they delivered it to us. They seemed pretty reasonably priced too. Bit of a conflicting review but hope this helps!
