Thank you everybody for your replies. Yes, as you said it's really stressful for the whole family. Me and my dear husband were shocked yesterday when we found out that he is self inflicting pain. He is going through cutting and we found lots of cuts in his hands. He said it makes hom feel better. We are really lpst and i hope he'll get the appropriate help. Really bad situation and until you can get an appointment you need to get your son talking to you. Will he talk to someone else? Another adult, close friend or family member?

If you can get a good package that allows for your son and his education I think you would enjoy it. Whilst there are no expat state schools here many do have the paperwork loads although not maybe as much as you have endured previously. The primary teachers here work hard and have different challenges. Some schools here do enormous amounts of assessment recording and their teachers (esp Key stage leaders/SMT) spend many extra hours filling in paperwork etc. Some schools do less and are different although with the new inspections taking place most are upping their assessment recording to gain higher levels. (KHDA inspections) The pressures are different and dependent on where you have come from will probably be less that state UK.(hopefully) Different as in schools here are generally for profit rather than non profit making as in the UK, cultural differences as well. Well worth checking out the TES forum and International schools reveiw forum for more feedback and advice as to which schools to avoid or go for. Be very careful about double checking everything before you sign any contract, and make sure it's in the contract! You will also need to check out sponsorship issues esp with a LO in tow. ie were you married and do you have permission to take your son out of the UK? etc Female teachers can sponsor husbands if there is a DH in tow.

The night before you can test how cold the bird is? Qui? If it goes crunch it's frozen! Then bird may need gentle introduction to kettle of boiling water down middle and wacked into hot oven for a bit, with me so far? There are always ways.

Have you got a thermometer (meat one just in case, can't just stick a normal one up its jacksy!) That can help you judge how defrosted it is.

Only your Doctors can advise to continue or stop based on your medical history. However here is something that may help. Two of my closest friends both spent years having nearly every procedure known to man to get pregnant. One spent 5 years the other three years. The procedures were very invasive and put huge stress on both parties. Both were told to stop and take a break, both were told the chances of getting preggers naturally were almost zero. Once treatment stopped and they had come to terms with the reality they both got pregnant and have both delivered. Normal pregnancies and one has had another child. One was 40 the other 36, both had tried for years naturally. The point of telling you this is that sometimes there are no answers and just sometimes the weirdest things can happen. Good luck. Maybe post on an IVF forum or mumsnet.

Only you and your husband know what has been going on in your marriage. You have recognised now there is a problem , which has basically been down to a lack of communication between the two of you. (from your posts) Now you have to speak to your DH about the future. The harsh reality is that you have three children who have to be priority for both your DH and you. To divorce because the "spark is not there" and not try everything possible to save the marriage is not acceptable in my book. If there is abuse or affairs that is different but if this is just communication then you both need to grow up (to but it bluntly) and start communicating about the future and the harsh consequences of what could happen to your children should you split. Stop feeling angry it's a waste of energy and start talking to your DH and get some counselling to try to at least keep civility. If you keep angry then your communication will break down even further and this will be a disaster for your children. I also suggest you look at why your intimacy has been lacking between you, to say it's because i'm a working mum is not really an answer, dig deeper. Same for him, what has he done on the intimacy front and why not? No one has a perfect marriage, all marriages have up's and downs. The secret is to recognise those periods and talk about them with your spouse. Marriage is not one sided it has to be a partnership to work, you both need to address the issues as to why it's failing and you both need to address how you can make it work or at least give it a good shot. Small steps. Get help and take a deep look at yourselves. edited by Lolacat on 20/12/2012

Anyone else get the note from school yesterday about the implementation of the re-enrolment fee for continuing students. A certain school is falsely characterising the fee as a mandatory KHDA requirement but when you read the guidelines it is purely discretionary. Schools do not have to implement it - but of course we are not surprised they are. They are permitted to levy an upfront fee of 10% of the annual fee ... so my school of course is asking for 10% to be paid by April 2013 for the September semester. edited by aevans_indubai on 17/12/2012 No way??????????? Is there a ruling on this in print that can be quoted?

Yes he is very violent. I will be on my employers sponsorship as the husband has already withdrawn my sponsorship . Also my work involves interacting with both the sexes. I guess its pretty clear. I don't have an option to return at least till the divorce is finalized. There is only as much precaution one can take. Thanks again ladies. Sad that anyone can decide that because of another but yes, that is the most sensible choice for your own safety. When the divorce is finished then change your name if you come back. Any chance you could work for the company where you are based now? You can't live in fear here and it's a small world here, someone would mention they had seen you. Just stay safe. edited by Lolacat on 12/12/2012

There's a lot of aggression and judgment on here! Lolacat are you a parent yourself? I ask because I have found the worst judgements come from people who are not parents and have very idealistic views and theories on how children should be raised without ever having experienced the reality. I have heard it all while being pregnant and been lectured til blue in the face by people who think they know better than I do what is right for my child, whether it is what I should be eating, to my medical care. Everyone's parenting styles are different and in an ideal world I think every mum wants to spend as much time with their child as possible doing everything. Some cultures have a bigger "home help" element which Westerners are frankly not familiar with. British women seem to think that running oneself ragged doing it all is a virtue and medal-worthy. Why? Why not just accept help when needed. In this case, the OP is unwell and cannot dedicate all the time she would like to doing feeds and other things. I would suggest to spend as much time doing baby things and have the maid do all the "support duties" like cleaning up, sterilizing, preparing feeds, running the bath, and take over when OP needs to rest. It is not impossible for a maid to clean during that time either, they will find a formula that works. Also - a lot of people go on about either having a nanny or a maid, which is not always possible. I don't know anyone who has both (with just one child as well!) and it is not unrealistic to expect a maid to clean while a child is sleeping. OP The Alex Shoes list is invaluable and I've modeled my own maid's schedule on it. Good luck and hope you find someone. With you there, it's amazing that some posters manage to sound like experts when they don't even have a child yet or a maid! I never claimed to be an expert - all I made were my suggestions about a possible routine, and that people leave off with their criticisms of other people's parenting because it is hurtful and unnecessary. I try to be as fair as possible in my comments on this forum, I try to be helpful and I try to not judge others. Surely it is best to seek first to understand others' point of view rather than just pouring scorn? I am aware people disagree and I don't claim to be an authority on this subject, but I do expect people to be respectful in their disagreements over what is clearly an emotive subject. Enough said, point made, amusing. lol

My friend wants to start her own shoe business here and was wondering what is the most popular shoe size for women. Is he aware the worlds biggest shoe shop in Dubai Mall has recently opened? What sort of shoes does he want to stock? Which market, high end, middle, low end? Heels or not? Shoes for big feet appear to be a problem here but is that market big enough to sustain a shop and stock? Many nationalities here have smaller feet (not so tall) and this market seems well catered for across the price spectrum. How is his shoe shop going to be different to the hundreds of shoe shops here?

Single young man with no dependents living in a shared apartment at start of carreer, yes go ahead. Family surviving and employed in UK, stay where you are. Want to move to the ME then look around for a far better package. Check out the company and who they are, International company or not? Try posting this on a forum where there are actually people in that industry who may know the company and project. Google your nationality followed by expat and you will find a ME section on that forum. Also be aware and research that industry and the security net that comes with it, it won't take long. You sound wise, go with your gut feeling and always follow if in doubt don't. as some posters have stated their will be a load of posters who say yes this salary if fine, i would disagree and would not even consider it based on the cost of living. Be aware that set up costs are huge, is the offer with full relocation here and back? How long has to be worked before that is non refundable back? Has your DH ever worked in the heat? Good luck.

DR 1658. Firstly the thread was not about two posters it was about one who has now removed her post. Nuture has a huge influence on a child. I think this has been blown out of all proportion , a quick look through some posters previous posts makes that clear. From verging on ridiculous it has now reached that point! The thread was started by one lady and another then joined in because she was needing a a maid for the same reasons. The second lady then explained why she needed the help she did after certain insinuations were made. You still carried on regardless. Some of your posts are still there for the reading. I disagree with you, goodnight.

The difference is that this is NHS, not private. Anyhow, I sounded suitably deranged and hysterical and found out as much as I could from someone higher up the chain. Fortuitously, my brother is now on his way there from Canada, so soon there will be someone on the ground with her, thank Heavens. I think you will find the NHS are much tighter than private hospitals before this fiasco anyway. It's a horrible situation though, hope your mum makes a quick enough recovery they can get a phone to her to reassure you.

See this is what thoughtless people in society end up doing to the rest of the population due to their stupidity. I would call back and ask to speak with a Doctor or get a neighbour/relative to get there and find out the information for you. You could also email a doctor there or the ward stating who you are and what proof do they require so you can find out your mothers condition as you are abroad. very sad.

This thread is verging on ludicrous now, many of the posts are missing including the orginal one! I completely agree with Spongemonkey on this and maybe that is because we have had children and maids and lived in this part of the world long enough to see what can occur. We do not need to give our life stories to what can only be described as rather rude posters when commenting on a topic. Congratulations to those you have posted who are new mums, please never keep quiet if you are feeling overwhelmed but please do think about and source any help with the greatest of care. It's very easy to become lazy in the middle east and fall into the "I must have" scenerio because many others do. Stay grounded, keep your kids grounded and enjoy every minute of them, the precious moments are not receiving them after they have had their bath smelling nice, they are bathing them, looking after them when they are sick, experiencing the good and the bad. To believe otherwise is short sighted. Bringing children up is not down to luck, it is ruddy hard work and a daily learning experience. What you put into your small children will reap the rewards when they are older. Just remember why you had your children before you plan to have someone else bring them up. And finally many mothers have disabilities, they don't all shout to the world about them and they still manage to bring their children up. And just to really get this across as certain posters seem to want to be obtuse about it, no one is saying don't have help, they are saying don't let the precious moments be lost to another. That's a goodnight from me on this really rather sad subject and goodluck to all you young mums, enjoy your babies, because you sure as Zonk won't enjoy the teenage years!

OP came on, showed a schedule. A standard, textbook, feeding schedule. Fair enough, these seldom work. In this schedule, the baby was put to sleep three times during the working day, the expected sleep time being for 1.5 hours. Each time, there was a 'light' task written for the help, never 'mopping', washing/ironing. Some readers assumed the undocumented time would be spent doing the job of a maid, although OP herself never said that, she just asked if the schedule was realistic which, for a nanny it is, and light, nannies are expected to run houses in the west, as a governess. She said she was unwell. I'm sure she doesn't think "great news, I'm sick, I get out of bath time!" She is paying for a hand around the house. There's nothing worse than being unwell and seeing your babies needs go unfulfilled because you literally cannot do it, so maybe OP doesn't give a rats if her floors don't shine, but she does want her baby to have what she is unable to give him. That's not cultural, that's being a mum. Actually a qualified nanny from or in the west would never ever be expected to do house hold chores, never! They are expected to look after baby, for that they are qualified and paid a vast amount of money. Even Au pairs are not expected to do much house work! Also please find me a nanny who works 6 days a week a minimum 12 hour day for the equivilant of 1200 dhs a month from the west! lol

Support duties as a maid yes, no one suggested otherwise, bringing baby up and full house work duties urm why? Is no one allowed to question this when the information has been so vague? Suddenly this poster is ill, talk about Chinese whispers, she said she needs a rest and sometimes is not well. She wants a maid and was asking about scheduling and how hard should her maid work! It was suggested that she narrow down her criteria and suggested that she thinks hard about having cheap labour bring baby up, appreciating that having a LO can be overwhelming but clarify which she wants a cleaner or full time nanny. It was and continues to be suggested she factor in breaks for her maid within the schedule. Some posters felt that a 12 hour day with no break perfectly ok, others did not. This feedback was given from experience, asking a cheap unqualified maid to do both will often lead to one not being done well. Also it was mentioned as her child grows so the schedule will change, ie less sleep. When in a few months time a story pops up in the press and arrives on here about a maid abusing a child in her care, I'll ask you to remember this thread and the advice suggested about expectations and clarity of expectations from the start. Have a nice day. You still did not answer the question about being a parent yourself? And furthermore, how can you link an overworked maid with child abuse because she didn't have enough breaks??! Your comment about nationalities was a bit left field too! How long have you lived in a culture that employs maids? Why should i answer you rather ridiculous question? What's left of field? Are you suggesting that different cultures do not raise children differently and have different expectations? What's the word culture mean then? How many children do you have? What happens when people get overworked? Sorry for the ? but I am asking questions??? lol

You post such a list on a public forum with a mix of nationalities all with a different parenting culture you are going to get a mixed bag of responses. Maybe posters should start adding their nationality into the titles of posts so posters not of that nationality don't bother responding? It's the different ethnicity background you'd want to understand and learn to be able to appreciate their differences :o) Why would i want to appreciate their differences if i disagree with them? Look it's simple, different cultures have different ways to bring up their children and different expectations. Not all from those cultures but a majority body. Do i agree with some of those, no, so therefore maybe it would be an idea if everyone stops being PC and says. Look i need advice i'm from outer Zonk, i need a Zonkien maid to bring my baby up the Zonk way, if you are not from Zonk land don't bother responding because you will never appreciate Zonk child rearing? see how easy is that? (lol) Disclaimer ; If you are indeed Zonkein, please do not be offened this was just an example, I am aware your child rearing culture is amazing! edited by Lolacat on 11/12/2012

Doesn't look like OP is too lazy to feed or carry her child. Shame she has to explain her physical condition in such detail because some are so quick to judge. Bit harsh to basically tell her she's not a good mother just because she needs help with caring for her child. Guess everyone here is a super mom. No she doesn't, she's asking about employing some help in the house and what is reasonable. Funnily enough it was suggested she be clearer with what she actually needs /wants. You post such a list on a public forum with a mix of nationalities all with a different parenting culture you are going to get a mixed bag of responses. And it's only you who are stating she is not a good mother and is lazy, fraudian slip?

Hello, Thank you all for your comments esp CandiceH for the suggestions. My daughter has always had a poor appetite and been underweight. I have taken my daughter to 3 doctors and they had suggested introducing different foods in her diet, eating with her etc. However, none of this worked. At the end, they all suggested I distract her to make her eat so that her weight reaches a normal range. Since I have decided to introduce the ipad/laptop, I wanted to make sure that she watches something educational which is the reason I posted the question. I'm sorry but i am still concerned about your comment about drastic weight loss. This is very serious if it is the case, has your DD been weighed regularly? One of the very hard things in this region can be finding the right doctor. Some doctors will not investigate or may be quick to say just keep on distracting and feeding her. But if your DD is seriously losing drastic amounts of weight because she will not eat then it really needs much more investigation. She may well have intolerance issues or something else. Children can be fussy eater but losing drastic amounts of weight is a major sign that needs investigation. Distratcing her is a step they are asking you to do for a short while to see if eating improves, but as you say she has always been underwieght and a fussy eater i would be having further investigations, keeping a food diary, star charts, fun play with food, cooking with her, and keeping a weekly check on her weight. I would not be using TV unless suggested by an expert and until i had exhausted every other possibility. I really would suggest you take her to another doctor who can advise further, look up Dr Nicola Dreamer at Health bay polyclinic in Mirdiff or ask for some others on here.

Totally agree with spongemonkey!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm fed up with the PC brigade jumping on every thread and saying no one must judge, nonsense! And those who are so quick to say it are normally the biggest judges out there! The op needs to decide what she wants a nanny or a maid, no one is suggesting new mums don't need help but, and here is the but the time with a baby is so precious and is so much more than just feeding and playing, it's a huge part ot their development that can never be got back. Anyone who is a SAHM is so lucky to have this chance, many mothers have to go straight back to work. I do not think it is judgemental of mothers who have raised children to just mention to new mums don't let that precious time be given to another. Also be prepared to pay a descent salary and have realistic fair working hours and conditions if you want the best from your help. Cheap labour being overworked will leave or be useless. Is this really so unreasonable to mention? Sometimes i wish this forum would revert back to the old days! edited by Lolacat on 11/12/2012

Look at flying them into LHR and then up to Edinburgh via car. How many dogs do you have, that seems ridiculously high. There is a lady who arranges transport at really good rates, but i can not remember her name! The vet hospiatl may know her or feline friends as i know she has lots of rescue cats. A neighbour used her last year and she was by far the best price and did an excellent job. Look on Dubbizle for travel crates 2nd hand. Also look at doing the paper work yourself, call EK and see if they can tell you any names of agents and costs.

If the dog is aggressive/biting/snapping/lunging towards people or you suspect its only a matter of time before he bites your child or another person... put him to sleep. I love animals and I'm fostering a lovely little dog (anyone looking to adopt?), and I don't normally advocate for euthanasia, but aggression that hasn't been helped by visits to to three different trainers, that you can't find the cause of, and that has been ongoing for a year... doesn't sound like a very responsible or safe idea to rehome or keep around your child. agree completely with your post! Not a nice thing but a responsible one.

That may be true but i find that people are often very critical on the forum sometimes. Im sure the mum will have done research into her daughters weightloss etc ie doc visit or something like that. But we dont know that so we should be supportive not judgemental using words like 'normal' and common sense. Its her child and we should give benefit of the doubt perhaps? Just saying... The one thing you can be sure of is never to be sure of anything that anyone says or presume that anyone thinks as you do. You are sure the mum has researched? how? You are making a judgement based on what? What you would do? If it's not in the post and the question is asked expect a mixed response, other wise don't bother posting. Sometimes when there is an issue the mind can be so focused on the issue combined with exhaustion that what would appear to others as a norm has not happened. Sometimes the feedback posted by a variety of posters can help sugest an area that may have been missed. If a child is losing drastic amounts of weight it needs to be investigated, that would be normal? Some may not know there are medical professionals who can help with eating issues. The whole point of a forum is to ask advice, sometimes as proven in the past the advice given can save lives. Thank goodness everyone is not so PC at times.

Lolacat as already mentioned I'd be doing some of the play time and feeding time during the maids schedule and I would be the one doing it all from 6pm-6am. Did you miss that or something? Yes i did miss that, you did only state some of the below. Putting it all in a list like that makes it sound as if you wish the maid to do all of this, otherwise why put on a list asking??? For the very simple reason that I have never had house help here in Dubai and I wanted opinions on the schedule I've made for her! So that was her schedule then? Why not just do a schedule that states what she will do to make it very clear to you and others, how can responses be given is we don't know which bits you are helping with?
