If anyone's interested, it's just under 7km from the start of the track at the open beach next to JBH to the end at the open beach beside Jumeirah Beach Park. Track goes the whole way, although part of it just past DSO is coned off just now. Very pleasant and lovely to see it so busy this morning!

Thanks Buddha. I think there are a couple of stretches where the beach is interrupted, but they seem to have extended the track in and around these locations. Pity about the markers, hopefully they'll be added soon.

Sorry, can never quite get the 'quote' thing right! Thanks Sarahlou. I did a search but most of the info I could find was quite old. Was hoping to get some up to date input. Will tell her to look at Goldcrest though and thanks again! Ladies, wonder if anyone can assist. Trying to help out a friend who's moving here soon. Interested in JLT properties but I don't know much about the area. Does anyone know, which are the best/most popular Towers and also, if there are any new towers which would be close to completion. TIA! If you use the search post above and input JLT/Jumeriah Lake Towers I think there are some threads about buildings ( ones to avoid etc) I have friends who have lived in Goldcrest and they are happy after 3 years of living there

Thanks ladies, I went to origins living yesterday they have lovely sofas and can also make from scratch. Going to try Everest tomorrow as they have great reviews, fingers crossed. Please let us know how you get on with Everest. I'm in the same boat. Have been round all the usual suspects but have yet to see anything. Heading to Origins Living tomorrow after seeing their website. Thanks for the recommendation and good luck!

Worth remembering too, this is The Prosecution Case, so things are going to look bad for OP. Will be completely different when the Defence Case is on. (Not that I have any leanings either way, just think the whole thing is very sad for all involved.)

I was advised by the Land Dept. last week (by phone), the initial fees would be approx. AED20K, renewal fees after 2 years would be AED 1300 per visa and a charge of AED 8K would be levied every 4 years. (Would imagine I could be told something completely different if I called again though!)

Heartbreaking watching this on the news. The devastation is just unbelievable. My heart goes out to anyone with loved ones out there. If anyone knows or hears of any aid/relief being collected here in Dubai, please let us know.

Would imagine they could class it as a 'concert' or still a 'sporting event' as they wish. Sure the outcome will be no dry night!

Pretty sure one of the ADGP nights last year was (supposed to be) dry, but it went ahead as usual. (too much money to lose I would imagine.)

Did a long(ish) run at the weekend, came in, stripped, and threw all the gear at the washing machine (far too tired to place inside!) Blamed the dog all day for the funny smell in the house. Poor dog! Just not sure that wet-wipes will cut it! (Could you run in the morning instead??) edited by looperdxb on 18/09/2013

What drives the 'actual' price is what people are willing to pay. Rental rates are set by supply and demand as a property will only rent (or sell) for what someone is willing to pay for it. The laws of supply and demand are well and good if the market isn't distorted and if there aren't asymmetries of information. Those renters on "expat packages" with 100% employer-paid housing most definitely distort the market and inflate prices for those paying housing costs out of their normal salaries. With so many people coming and going, new arrivals have access to very limited information on what prices *should* be. That works in agent/landlords benefit as if someone with good information on the market isn't willing to pay an inflated price they can generally wait for a less informed buyer/tenant or one with an inflated housing allowance to come along who will pay the inflated rate. Of course they do, but it's still supply & demand and, as everyone frequently points out on here, there are very few still on 100% 'expat packages' here now. As for 'new arrivals', sorry but people should do their homework, as they should for moving to any new city. If a LL/Seller is willing to hold out until someone is willing to pay the price they're asking, is that wrong??

Greedy Landlords & Estate Agents can only inflate the 'potential' price of a property. What drives the 'actual' price is what people are willing to pay. The Landlords that sit with empty properties are in the minority, it's business after all, and they make no money in this situation. (Appreciate that people asume that all Landlords are 'local' with loads of villas and out to fleece all 'expats' but some of us have bought Buy-to-let here as an investment (as we would do in our home countries).) Rental rates are set by supply and demand as a property will only rent (or sell) for what someone is willing to pay for it.

Have had a quick look at the London External website and there seems to be a couple of courses which may be of interest. I'll look into them in greater detail, so thanks for the reply and providing another option! Still interested to hear any thoughts specific to OU UK.

Ladies, thanks for the replys. I was on my way to DNATA when I got a phone call from someone at the Airport Office. She offered me a flight with Quantas at the same time as the BA Flight. Apparently, the customer service centre have no authorisation to offer an alternative airline but others in BA do. (which is fine but the only number available on their website is the customer service centre!) Anyway, has worked out OK in the end but could have been much better handled. flyingfinn: Nightmare for you and no, the person I spoke to didn't know any of the Saturday flights were cancelled either as she was checking them all for me!

How can you say you cannot support someone because you think he is a grimacing, gurning, ungracious lout. He is a brilliant tennis player, forget his nationality and apart from that one comment, taken completely out of context, he has always flown the flag for Britain. I wish folk, and I count friends in this statement, would get over the nationality thing and move on, it is pathetic. He cannot even comment on his Scottish roots now in case it causes a melt down in the media. Focus on the sport people, he trounced Novak today showcasing brilliant tennis, no argument. Just because he is not a 'golden boy', is not comfortable in front of the press, does that make him poor amabassador? Take an hour out of your day and watch the documentary, do a bit of research and see what it takes to be number 2 in the world (yes, number 2!!) and then come back and say he has no flair and less style. Throw in the expectation of the nation and consider the pressure he is under. Also remind yourself what he does for charity, maybe not front page news but he donated all his winnings at Queens for Royal Marsden hospital in support of cancer research. Sorry, for the rant but I am sick and fed up of folk lambasting this talented player, you should be proud of the fact he is actually a ****** good player and what a match we witnessed tonight. Completely agree. Have been a huge Murray fan for years and am so proud of him for the effort and composure he showed yesterday. Have never really understood what all the 'Andy bashing' has been about over the years (apart from the 'joke' with Henman, which the press completely blew out of proportion.) He's a tennis player, not an 'OK' celebrity, can't we just celebrate how good he is at tennis instead of complaining that he doesn't smile??? ......................and obviously he's Scottish!! lol

So, if everyone is looking for the same price and there are buyers/tenants willing to pay this price then, surely, that's the value of the property?

Am I missing something? Surely it's all about supply and demand. If properties are sitting empty then the rent/sale price is too high. Neither the Landlord or the Agent are making money. I understand that people are greedy but unless every single landlord & agent out there have the same plan, there will always be someone willing to rent/sell at the market value. Rising prices can only be driven by "greedy Landlords" or "greedy Agents" if people are willing to pay the crazy prices.

If you are worried about the regular Dubai taxis then have a look at Careem. They are slightly more expensive but for my piece of mind, especially if I have been out drinking I use them. All the drivers are tracked and no money changes hands as it is changed to a credit card on your account. Meaning no lost wallets as the driver will be traced but more importantly 'everything' is logged by the company. Sorry not sure how this "quote" thing works....anyhow, can highly recommend Careem. Have used them a few times and always early & pleasant driver,

Sorry FW, not aware of the exact rules but would ask for some kind of ID if this guy is trying to throw you or your Daughters' guests out. Could understand if it was busy but seems ridiculous when it's so quiet.

Not sure, but is there anyone there to stop you? We have an apartment there that we rent out. I was up yesterday and there wasn't a soul at the pool, so I would hope "the more, the merrier'. (as long as you were all on your best behaviour, of course!)

Outspan, I think you need to treat the taxi drivers as you would treat anyone else. I also chat with them sometimes, they work long hours, are away from their families and have to put up with a lot of abuse throughout their shift. I don't think it's a bad thing to treat them like fellow human beings and have a simple conversation. BUT, being asked personal questions about your husband is just wrong (as it would be in any other situation). I have never came across this but would definitely tell the driver it was none of his business, to keep driving and not entertain any further chat. Like every walk of life, some are good, some are bad. I don't think you can say that all taxi drivers are the same.

I think the most important thing, is just to be aware of everything going on around you and expect other drivers to do the unexpected! I watch my mirrors all the time and now, just assume that someone will move into that small space between me & the car in front without indicating. As a side note, my Brother lives in rural Ireland and I drove the last time I was there. I was terrified and wanted to close my eyes every time another car passed me! There's just not enough space on those roads for 2 cars.....give me SZR any day! Just get out there, you'll be absolutely fine. edited by looperdxb on 22/05/2013

Good morning Ladies! I know this is a long shot but, just in case anyone has woken up this morning and is unable to use their tickets, I would be incredibly grateful for them. Due to a bit of bad planning our group are 2 short. (I am monitoring dubizzle but unable and unwilling to pay the extortianate prices!) TIA and have a lovely day!
