Big fan of the Angel Care monitor too. We switched early on from Avent to Angel Care and I agree with all the other posts about the advantages of this monitor. We take ours when we travel too.

Agree - SPF50 is a must for little ones. We use Mustella brand and it's fine. Surf stores (Roxy, Billabong etc) sell swim suits and cover ups which are certified in Australia for UV protection too. The ones you get in Mothercare etc are just normal fabric and do not block UV rays.

nams - I know, I also learnt the hard way!! mols - each baby is different and grobags (in fact most sleeping bags) come with guidelines as to the type of bag to use in different temperatures. For our LO, I use a 1.0 bag during the day when she sleeps in light clothes such as a short sleeved onesie. The AC is set to 23 degrees. At night she sleeps in a long sleeved PJs, 2.5 tog and AC set to 22 degrees. BUT, I have to stress that I don't really trust the AC temp gauge as sometimes I have stayed in her room and have had to wear a robe and was still a bit cool. You really need to find the right balance between what your baby is comfortable with and what is not dangerous.

I had it too, throughout my pregnancy. For me the pain was at its worst when I was stretching that muscle area, particularly when exercising on treadmills and doing weights etc towards the last stages of pregnancy. Guessing by your name you love pilates - have you been doing it since falling pregnant? I did a pregnancy pilates class all the way through until the end and always felt great afterwards. I got a special DVD for pregnancy and it worked wonders. The stretching always made me feel better : )

Hi Suz&Olivia We also have the M&P Pilko and used it for travel to Sydney and yes it was annoying and cumbersome so we recently bought ourselves a Quinny Zapp and I understand it is the only model that folds down to a size which allows you to take it on as cabin luggage so it's perfect for travel. The Zapp Xtra doesn't fold down to this size as the seat is not foldable (if I recall correctly). Certainly when we bought our Zapp, we were interested in a model that we could take on board and this was the only one. The drawback is that the seat on the Zapp does not recline but it does on the Xtra. If you are keen on the Zapp, I would suggest you wait until the next series of sales as we bought ours from Babyshop at 50% off, around AED500. You may also be able to pick one up second hand at that price.

Yes, it's great but you can obviously only fit a small amount but it's still helpful. I buy lots of baby stuff from eBay and save heaps. I recently bought a Maxi Cosi summer cover for about AED110 whereas you pay just over AED200 here. I've also bought things like Colic Calm syrup from the US and Grobag sleeping bags (again 50%) and that includes the delivery charge! Here is the link to the very net basket: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NET-BASKET-for-QUINNY-ZAPP-BUZZ-IN-BLACK-bag?item=150774111499&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8413123095005206633#ht_3343wt_1002

Hi Pingu - we bought a Quinny Zapp recently (same basket I think?) and the basket wasn't in the box. The place we bought the Zapp from sold them separately - it's Babyshop in Oasis Centre. I have also bought a vertical basket from eBay which secures near the handles and at the bottom wheels - this was about AED40 including delivery.

Thanks for your thoughts jc2010. It's so strange but what part of having babies is supposed to be predictable? : ) After going down so easily last night, she slept 11 hours straight without a break and had a brilliant day today. Hope she incorporates this good behaviour into her "routine"! LOL.

Thanks again SG : ) She slept until midnight but then woke four times at night sobbing but fell asleep again without help from me. She then slept in and also had a longer nap in the morning (she recently dropped her afternoon naps). We also have started doing the chill out time technique as you suggest and this is helpful. Once again tonight when we put her down, she immediately sat up and wailed for about 2 to 3 minutes. I then placed her on her back, patted her and she fell asleep almost instantly!!?? TC : )

We flew with our DD to Oz when she had just started solids but was still relying on formula as her main meal. We had a large bag totally devoted to hot water, cool boiled water, formula, solids in jars and also a large range of medication she was taking at the time. We had absolutely no problems at all and I am really surprised at this because Customs in Oz is one of the most strictest in the world. Do everything you can to go prepared but if for whatever reason they take the water off you, you can always buy bottled water once through security and you can also get hot water from cafes, lounges and on the plane itself. I kept one bottle of formula made up and carried it with me throughout the journey (obviously creating new batches to keep them fresh) to use in emergencies. With regard to your carrier - just be aware that you will be asked to take your baby out and put the carrier through the xray. We found this terribly annoying as we were carrying lots of bags but there's not much you can do about things like that.

My normally super sleeper has turned into a bundle of mess before sleep time - day naps and night. She has gone from being put down in her cot and wriggling around for a bit before falling asleep on her own with no protests to crying her eyes out and growling before falling asleep. Yesterday she refused to sleep after lunch. Today was a bit better, she fell asleep sooner but the intense crying was still there. She recently started crawling and sitting up on her own. This evening I saw she was trying to stand at the side of the cot using the beams for support. She's up to her 8th tooth but hasn't had a reaction like this to teething before. Separation anxiety? Anything else I should bear in mind? TIA!

We've been using the Petit ? (sorry can't remember the full name) brand since DD was about 7 months old. Our local Spinneys stocks a 6-pack at 23 dirhams and a 4-pack at 10 dirhams. The four packs come in Apricot and Strawberry flavours and the container is actually bigger than the 6-pack (don't tell Spinneys!). I give her one container each morning after she has had her cereal and milk. I'm sure there are some non-nutritional components in there but I've been having a difficult time getting DD to drink milk since we introduced solids that I am happy for her to take the yoghurt so enthusiastically.

Yep - you are entitled to better mat leave conditions if you have a DIFC employment contract as opposed to Dubai proper. Note though that if you are working for a DIFC based company but are on a contract say from a different jurisdiction, eg UK, you should in theory be given the same rights as you would normally in that country. I know of one woman who worked in a professional firm and was under a UK contract as she was transferred here. They gave her full UK benefits. They then had to offer the same to all other women working at their DIFC office regardless of the jurisdiction of the contract as they set a precedent with her!

I was also confused. To clarify initial cost for us was 5K for the sponsorship and then other costs associated with employment (total of this was under 1K). Then, on top, you pay a monthly salary. Airfare for us was under 3K.

Hi ladybird14 If I recall correctly, the sponsorship cost us 5K as her previous sponsorship was cancelled (I think it is cheaper if there is a transfer). There were other associated costs, such as getting her a health care card, the blood test and an Emirates ID card. The flight return home is on top of any salary you pay. Under the labour contracts which are issued now, the rules stipulate that the employee is entitled to annual leave and a flight home after one year of service. You can decide if you grant her this during the first year of service or afterwards. If you decide to terminate her contract after a year, you still have to pay her out for airfares and holiday pay. I don't know what the annual sponsorship fee is after the first year but assume it is a standard flat rate of 5K? You can call the Ministry of Labour to find out, I believe they have a dedicated support line to answer queries about home helpers. If you have a live out nanny, you should factor in about 800 dirhams extra per month for housing allowance which you would not ordinarily have to pay if your nanny lived with you. But then if she lived with you, you would pay for her food, all fees associated with her living with you etc. There are agencies out there who can help you with all of this but they charge a premium of course. Why not ask your or your husband's HR dept / PRO to organise it? If the person is going under your sponsorship, and if you are sponsored by an employer, you may be able to get the company PRO to arrange for you? We did and it saved us time and hassle. Finally, in terms of finding someone trustworthy - I too had this as a concern. The interview obviously gives you a good impression - try to come up with a list of behavioural style questions, ie "what would you do in this situation" etc to gauge her ability to think on her feet and in a logical manner. Check references and when you do, ask about what she did well and what her shortcomings were. Finally, I would recommend offering some form of a financial reward associated with her performance. We agreed to give our nanny a pay rise after six months of service if she was doing a good job and to build trust, we also gave her a holiday home even though she had not completed a year of service. We also pay her slightly higher than other nannies. Although I am at work and cannot keep an eye on her, I have popped home un-announced on occasion and have also asked other mums I know in our area for their views on how she is with our child when at the local park etc ... so far so good and I continue to keep my fingers crossed. I'm sure you'll get some additional tips on the Maids forum here. But give the classifieds a go and don't give up if you don't get the right candidates, keep looking until you find the right person. Advertise early as maids/nannies usually start looking around 8 weeks in advance of their current employment contract expiring (according to my nanny). Oh, and you can always ask your friends or other mums here as to whether their nannies/maids know of anyone looking for a new role. I've made a few connections this way too. Let me know if you want to chat further offline : ) take care M

Hi - I work in a law firm and can confirm that what is stated below is correct. I have come across one or two businesses who allow their pregnant workers to work shorter hours but this is rare and regarded as a perk. Upon returning to work, most businesses allow "nursing" mothers to combine their two 30 minute breaks and take it off the total of hours they are required to work. Some employers allow mothers to combine the lunch break with the one hour break and leave two hours early. One employer I am aware of prevented the mother from combining her lunch and one our nursing break so she made a complaint to the Ministry of Labour, filed a case and won a judgment in her favour. I am also aware that some employers have a very loose definition of "nursing" and don't necessarily require their employees to be breast feeding to allow them the time off. It's very much up to the employer though and a case won in court cannot be used as a precedent as this is not a common law system.

Hi - I was in your shoes 12 months ago as I was expecting my first baby in June and had to go back to work by September. As a pretty pragmatic and no-nonsense type of person (and also someone who had never been around babies), I really believed I would be better off putting our baby into nursery from the moment I returned to work and that baby would just have to get used to it and adjust etc. However, did I get the shock of my life when DD finally arrived. It quickly became apparent to both hubby and me that we could not leave an infant so young within a centre where the ratio of carers to babies is 1 carer for every 3 babies. For us, we could not trust that the nursery would follow the routine or schedule we established for our DD in the way in which we wanted if they had two other babies to look after. You will see that this is going to be a bit point for you as you need to return to work so soon - you will, I imagine, want to try to get your baby into a routine to ensure you achieve some form of normality and rest which is critical when you are working. Our situation was further complicated by the fact that our DD was really ill and required care - again not something that I could trust a carer who looked after three babies to do in the way I needed it done. About a month before I was due to go back to work, I placed an ad on the EW classifieds for a live out nanny with full sponsorship - we didn't want anyone living with us. I got 20 or so applicants and found a fantastic nanny who had good childcare experience. She spent the next four weeks with me and during those four weeks I gradually stepped back and allowed her to take care of my DD so that I could ensure she was doing a good job and so that I would get used to the idea of having to return to work (I intentionally ran errands during the day and gradually spent more and more time outside the house to build trust). DD is 10 months old now and looking back I can honestly say I wouldn't be able to go through leaving a small baby in a nursery. Not everyone has the choice but if you do, do consider one on one care as pointed out earlier. We were lucky to find a nanny who is highly interactive, caring and focused on our DD's development. The sponsorship and visa issue is a hassle but I think in the long run the financial cost of sponsoring yourself is less than going through an agency. Good luck to you - maybe wait until your baby is born to see how you feel before you make a final decision.

My DD is 9 1/2 months old and we had a check up with her doc last week and I asked this exact question. In our case, DD loves solids - can't get enough of them and her diet is varied - chicken, beef, veal, lamb, tuna, turkey, salmon etc with all sorts of fruits and vegetables. She also has yoghurt and cheese. I mention her diet as the doc said babies with varied diets will be less interested in milk by this age. Although it is important to ensure a 9 month old gets milk, the doc said she is getting enough nutrients and vitamins from her other foods. She is on about 600ml per day and takes three solid meals with snacks in between. Hi Susan - have you tried diluting the purees with your DD's milk? We started with very milky purees which might help?

Hi Denysee1 Sorry to hear about your LO's sleep problems. I contacted www.thebabysleepsite.com as I subscribe to their newsletter and generally find the information helpful. The woman behind the company emailed me prompting and suggested an earlier bed time. Despite us trying this in the past and it not making a difference, we picked three random days over the past week and put our now 9 month old girl to bed earlier anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes. She responded well (not sure why now and not before!) and is falling asleep sooner and with less fuss, tends not to wake as often at night (she slept a whole 10 hours straight without waking once) and is sleeping to around 5 / 5.30am. This morning she woke at 4am, fussed around for a bit but then slept until 6.40! Needless to say we are really pleased. She is also in a better mood in the day time and has a longer lunch time nap. Here is the link to the article which talks about sleep regression at the 8 to 10 month mark: http://www.babysleepsite.com/tag/8-month-sleep-regression/ - hope this helps you too : )

Hi Tanya Have you had your LO diagnosed by a doc yet to determine the severity of the condition? Our DD had severe problems and was even hospitalised twice each time for monitoring and altering medication. Some babies grow out of it and other babies require medication. She is 9 months old and still on the Losec. Infacol and gripe water are for gas and digestion but not really for reflux. Doctors tend to prescribe meds like Gasviscon, Zantac, Motillium and in severe cases, Losec. Some babies find relief sleeping on their left side as it is difficult for stomach contents and acid to make their way back up from this position. I'd really recommend though you get an expert opinion as reflux can pose dangers when it is a severe case and left untreated. A good book on the topic is "The Sensational Baby Sleep Plan" by Alison Scott Wright who devotes a chapter specifically to helping reflux babies sleep. All the best xx

We did it when our LO was born in June last year. We let our OB know in advance, brought the pack with us on the day and all hubby had to do was call the courier to arrange pick up. The actual process of snipping the cord and putting it inside the container is done whilst you are still on the bed recovering. You would have no idea that it was being done unless someone was describing it to you and usually it is done away from you anyway so you don't see anything. Certainly City Hospital gave us the impression that they perform the procedure very frequently and our OB made sure all the processes were followed accurately. I would definitely do it again : )

It's perfect for the pram or car seat - have used it in Mama's & Papa's pram, infant capsule and now Maxi Cosi seat. It is lamb's wool so the quality is even better (originally I had my mum courier over actual sheep skin from Oz!). We've had it for several months now and DD loves it. It keeps her warm and cool. Everyone asks where I purchased it from. It took about two to three weeks to deliver and I expect the delay was because of customs here.

My 5 1/2 month old baby is getting his first tooth, it is just coming out. He does not sleep thru the nigth but when he wakes up I Breastfeed him and he is fine, goes back to sleep, he barely cries. Now, since, he got the tooth 2 days ago, he sleeps 5 hours and then he starts waking up constantly crying, many times he does not want to breastfeed or stops quick like he is not hungry so I think he has pain. However, during the day he seems fine, like he has no pain, although his naps are getting shorter. Is this normal?, to cry and fuss more at nigth than during the day?. What can I do to help him?. Absolutely normal! Babies deal with teething in different ways and the common feature is that it can be disruptive to already established routines. My LO has been cranky for the past four weeks and it's because her top two teeth are coming. She got both her bottom teeth at the same time when she was 5 1/2 months old too. I would suggest you try teething gels as they can help numb the pain. Our daughter likes this gel teether which you put in the freezer and give it to your LO when it is cold - she munches on it for about 15 minutes and then seems to by fine.

Thanks Niggly. I called them today morning and they confirmed the same. Unfortunately reimbursement is not a good option for me as I have to pay 20%, and I have already coughed up an obscene amount of premium to my insurance company as I were pregnant already. Am plannig to go to a place like Medic, which is much inexpensive, so no pre- approval is required and they do direct billing. CP80 - try American Hospital as well. I didn't go there but I understand they can perform the scans - perhaps others on this forum can confirm? take care

Hi Mrs Chef Yes, I did. My LO had tongue tie and it was three weeks before she could have it snipped and during the three weeks I had to introduce formula as she was simply not getting enough milk during nursing. She was hungry and miserable and I certainly did not want to have a poor little hungry baby on my hands. I tried expressing but there was barely anything coming out (20ml max) and it took about 45 mins to express! You have to do what is right for you and for your baby. To ease the pain, I massaged quite a bit and just found that the process of weaning helped with the pain. All the best : )

Hi M, sorry to pop in but have a question regarding ADNIC cover. Did they cover NT, triple marker test and 20 week Anamoly scan? Hi CP80 - They didn't cover all the tests but certainly some. The other issue is that it can depend on where the test is done - the Fetal Centre for example were only able to give a reimbursement form for one of the test (if I recall correctly!).

Hi there Willa I've written about ADNIC quite a bit on this forum as I learnt that my employer did not cover maternity in its health insurance package AFTER I fell pregnant! I went with ADNIC as they were the only insurer to provide immediate cover. And yes, your husband needs to join as this is really the only way for them to recover costs (apart from hiking up the premium). I had an existing medical condition and although the premium wasn't affected much (pregnancy at the time was 19K and the extra was 3K), the process of getting ADNIC's doctors to review my pre-existing conditions was onerous and delayed the start of the policy by about a month so be prepared if you go down this route. Was it worth it? In my case yes. You never know what could happen to you or your baby on the delivery table. I have heard of people without insurance being out of pocket by more than AED100K. My total hospital costs ended up being over AED30K due to some heavy bleeding post delivery and the need for blood transfusions. That alone more than covered the cost of the insurance. Add to that the ante natal and you get the picture. I believe there are a number of insurance companies that only require you to wait 6 months (including ADNIC) before your maternity benefits kick in. Be careful about the policy wording though as despite some of the advice below, the wording in insurance policies can stipulate that ante natal visits (including any pregnancy related complications you have early in your pregnancy) are regarded as pregnancy for the purposes of insurance claims so if you do fall pregnant outside of the waiting period then you are most likely not going to be covered for that period of time. Best to check with the insurer. I also agree with JBads that taking out insurance pre-pregnancy will not cost you as much as taking a package and then you get peace of mind you are covered and can choose your hospital etc.

Thanks Kiwi and SydneyGal - invaluable help as always! I must say that the at home cooking wasn't as difficult as a thought - I basically spent about six hours in the kitchen one Saturday when the nanny was working and couldn't believe how much I was able to puree and freeze. As a full time working mum, I had my doubts but in the end the work has clearly paid off and many pennies have been saved! Kiwi, the steaming in the microwave is so easy, great tip!

Although I had a relatively easy pregnancy, I did experience incredibly bad joint and ligament pain including in the shoulder and on both sides. I mentioned it to my doctor at each visit and was told that it was perfectly normal. I was a bit of gym junkie before pregnancy and continued going during pregnancy. Lifting weights and cardio did absolutely nothing to help with the pain but what did work wonders was pregnancy pilates. I just downloaded a DVD and went to it at home two or three times a week - amazing. Your ligaments and joints generally stretch due to changing hormones. I actually grew a couple of centimetres - weird! Post delivery, I suffered a fractured foot but without actually having an accident, it just happened out of the blue. The doctor treating it said he had seen some pregnant women suffer odd bone related injuries post delivery particularly if they had sore ligaments and joints during pregnancy. Best to get it checked out and if it is general pregnancy pain, give something like pilates or yoga a go. take care

CC - the back arching was a symptom my DD had along with piercing screams during and immediately after drinking milk as well as constant crying and unsettledness. Silent reflux can come on at different strengths. In our case it was severe. Our baby was constantly miserable and we were at the doctors every few days. We sought two different opinions to make sure the diagnosis and course of treatment was right for our DD. She was putting on a lot of weight too. We tried Zantac and Motillium for 7 weeks and she wasn't getting any better. She was hospitalised twice for observation and treatment . Even the nurses at City Hospital said it was one of the more severe cases they had encountered. Eventually, thanks to talking to other mums with similar issues, I learnt about Losec and vividly recall the moment DD took milk and gave us a big smile straight after her feed - she was 10 weeks old and it was the first time the poor little thing did not cry after drinking and we were lucky enough to take a photo of the moment. Mealtimes have been enjoyable since then (of course she still has tantrums every now and then!). Everyone will tell you something different and all babies are different. Sometimes silent reflux goes away on its own and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes babies grow out of it at 4 months, others at 11 months and some never do. We are slowly weaning DD off her meds now, she is about to turn 8 months old. Maybe get a second opinion from another doctor - think about what is right for you and in the best interest of your baby. Take care and all the best - and be sure to listen to Kiwi's advice, it's gold!
