Many schools have already released their calenders for the academic year 2013-14 and i have not seen any finishing as late as the 2nd week of July. Each year there are rumours about this however it has not happened yet. These calendars will be provisional though and still subject to KHDA approval.

I'm interested to. If you are intolerant of cow's/goats/sheeps milk but not camel it must be worth a try.

I think she was saying it the other way round - that privately educated people's opinions would be a bit off. Not sure why though.

Places like Geant sell egg replacer and rice milk as well as gluten free pasta etc. Purple your link talks about getting a false negative for gluten intolerance but do you know if it's possible to get a false positive?

Yes I think that generally speaking that is correct, I have not seen US diploma amongst the possible entry requirements of UK unis, though I guess you'd have to actually contact them to find out for sure as may be it's not listed as it's unusual amongst those applying to the Uk.

Presumably 'special needs' covers a very wide field. Everything from gifted and talented to say dyslexia (where a child might still have the potential to get top grades across the board, if the dyslexia is addressed),to English as a foreign language needs, to physical limitations, to say low IQ and much more no doubt. All schools may have a 'special needs dept.' but may not cater for all special needs. Just adding as I thought maybe posters were talking perhaps at cross purposes about special needs provision.

Maybe these people holding two places until the last minute are very insecure and full of 'what ifs'. What if I hear lots of bad things about my preferred school between now and September? What if I discover that half the staff are leaving or owner/manager is changing etc.etc.? This is not to say that it isn't very hard on those coming from Horizon, JAPS etc. who have no year 7, just trying to think of a reason.

Are there many primary schools here then that don't have a year 7 with automatic entry? I can think of JAPS and Horizon. Also secondaries without a linked primary that they guarantee places to? I can think of DC and maybe JC if it's no longer lnked with JPS.

To find the 'best secondary school' you have to think about what would fit your child best. You have to be aware also of what you yourself feel makes a good school or you will not be satisfied and fees are not cheap! So, for instance some children but more so some parents in my experience think that academics are everything and therefore would not be suited to DC where there is a lot of focus on the extra-curricula, sport, music, drama etc.etc. as well as the academics.

I heard that Jumierah College which is a high school with a good reputation, if rather expensive, is opening a new primary dept. in September so they will have lots of places and be keen to fill them I assume.

Jebel Ali is a great school and Gems WPS also gets generally good reviews so I think you are in a lucky position. Have to say that I didn't think much of Varkey's interview in Express this week though. Although I get his point about trying to run cheap schools he just sounded so uncaring and dismissive of parents, 'Parents will stay here for a few years. They come and go.'

I'd go to a professional, though. Words in Arabic, as in English, carry meanings beyond definition, and she'd hate to have the equivalent of one of those English named shops that are amusing, like "Food Restaurant". or Athletes Foot.....

RDW I would start by looking at schools that are within easy reach of where you live and see what you think of them first. This thread is about Gems Wellington on sheikh zayed road behind the shangri-la hotel so maybe very far from you and not necessarily better than a school much nearer.

Yes they started to phase them in in 1991 in England and later Wales. Originally they were in English, maths and science for children aged 7, 11 and 14 to track progress. There's been all kind of problems (teaching to the test, stress for young children, marking fiascos etc.) and I think all that's left now is SATS in English and maths for 11 year olds. I think they stand for Standard Achievement Tests. Some of the schools here have them imdependantly marked in UK and post the results on their websites.

SATS are taken by children in year 6 (10-11 years) in British schools. They are expected to get level 4 or 5 by then if on track. Not the same as 11+ which is used for entry into some secondaries in UK.

Is KG1 equivalent to FS1, KG2=FS2 then?? Yes. My children go to Repton and they call it something different again! Isn't KG1 equivalent to FS2/Reception and KG2 equivalent to Year 1?

I used to know someone who travelled from there to JAPS. They moved to SO after he had already been at the school several years and only had about one and a half years to go. I imagine it was a relief when he started at DESC for year 7. So it is possible but not ideal.

The TES is advertising for a founding head for Formarke hall, Dubai which will have 1280 pupils but only early years from Sept. The map however shows it up by the creek not in Barsha. Also Repton Abu Dhabi opening Sept 2013.

Glad it all seems to have worked out well with the new head at BC and with minimal disruption to the school. It does all look very nice, the small areas I've seen and a very positive feel to it. @busybee - DC is a more academic, selective school than Repton - according to website minimum 5B's for 6th form and 86% A and A* results this year. However, I think you are right that the not-for-profit aspect of DC and BSAK gives them a linked ethos perhaps. not sure if the Aldar schools operate for profit.

It's hard to say what is the best British curriculum school as what's important to one parent is not so much to others. I'm a Brighton college parent and extremely happy with the school. The school is only in the 2nd year and have had some administrative teething problems but from a teaching and classroom point of view it's fantastic. Our first head who was very good was 'let go' at Easter but we now have a head who has come over from Brighton uk and most parents feel tis was the right decision. Other good schools are al Yasmina and bisad which are off the island and bask on the island. Can you say why the head was let go after 2 terms? Didn't his wife used to post here about the school in the run up to its opening and they had 2 kids they were moving there? I was sure I saw her acting in a BC players play at the school in the summer but I guess not if they went at Easter. Does BC takes boarders? Is it compararble as someone said with Repton in that and other ways or more like Dubai College ie selective day school. Sorry if you don't know dubai schools that will be hard to answer. If it takes boarders i guess it may attract from other Emirates as some find Repton is not for them but want that sort of school.

It may have been moved to the schools section or as it was a complaint sadly the school may have asked for it to be deleted.

Many children, mine included were not tutored for the exam and no doubt many others are tutored. They did not find it at all quirky but it seemed a familiar approach for those who had studied the English national curriculum in primary school. Children coming from other curricula may find it different I guess but they certainly gain places from Choiefat and from IB schools but maybe have tutoring, I don't know. The year 5 report and primary head teacher's report is also important. Perhaps not too much information is given out to avoid too much tutoring to the test and children getting stressed and seeing it as too big a deal.

In August it's not possible try to entry ? I am sorry ... my english it´s not very good! :-) The schools are closed in this period? It´s more dificult to children about 9 years old or 16 years old? Or depends ... Which country are you coming from and which curriculum are you requiring as this will make a difference. Are your children English speakers? Schools here are closed for children during July and August but some will have admin staff available or maybe just checking emails. With the 15/16 year old it may depend where he has got to in his studies, how long until he has public exams to take as to how easy it is to get a place.
