Thanks everyone - seems like time to call in the pest control. Yes Izzy, I did think to ask, in case it was a seasonal problem i.e coming in from the cold, rather than an infestation.

We have more than usual at the mo. We find one or two a week in the house. Just wondering if this is normal for the time of year or if we need to get pest control in and get the a/c cleaned. Thanks.

My husband has had no resi visa for a couple of weeks whilst his company change him from Abu Dhabi to Dubai visa. Therefore everyone he sponsors including our home help has been without a visa. During this time the home help's medical insurance expired and could not be renewed as it cannot be obtained without her having a visa. In this interim period the home help complained of pains in her chest so we have been paying for her to see a doctor to establish the cause of the pain. We have paid for consultations, medicine, x rays, ECG and echo- tests. The doctor has now advised our home help that she needs a heart operation. She has suggested having this done in the Philippines during her month's paid vacation as it is cheaper there. My question is, what obligation, if any do we have to pay for/contribute to the costs of the operation? From our point of view our obligation is to provide health insurance for treatment in Dubai only. As I said this is not currently in place but even if this were in place, I do not think it would cover the cost of having the operation done in Dubai, especially as this will now be a " pre-existing condition" when we are able to obtain insurance. I would appreciate views on what other employers would consider the correct course of action to be.

? thanks Angela, I think you may be right - I was just hoping it might be something else as things have been going well so far and being new to the whole domestic assistance scenario I am not used to dealing with it.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have been drinking the tap water - albeit boiled - but it is probably the change that I am reacting to or norovirus. I will get hold of the Duspatalin Retard, rehydration salts, pepsi, psyllium seed husks and a hot water bottle and get it sorted out! Actually, I have had 2 bananas today and I have had less cramping so they must be helping. M

Thanks Alismum. The hot water bottle is a good idea and I am just drinking water to try and clear it out. Hopefully, it will act as a detox and I will lose some weight! I will give it another day or two, with the hot water bottle and water, then if it is still bad I will have to see a doctor as I cannot carry on like this. I'm glad your son is feeling better now, it must have been miserable for him. M

Thanks a lot Blokkop I had not heard of that nursery before and we are planning to live in Al Raha Gardens so I think it may not be too far. I will give them a call about registration. With kind regards Maria

Hi I'm arriving in June with a 2.5 yr old and an 8 month old and I start full time work (8am till 6pm) on 1st July. I assumed wrongly that nurseries were open all yr round like in the UK, however now I see term times start in October. I have childcare sorted for half of the day (2pm till 7 pm) but I need to find an alternative childcare option from 7am till 2pm for both children (or my 2.5 yr old at least) over the summer. I would be grateful if any other working mothers could give me some ideas for childcare options over the summer. I would prefer a nursery/summer school arrangement if possible but any suggestions would be gratefully received. Many thanks Maria

Thanks Lulu and Loube I have just checked with Trolley.ae and although they do not currently cover AD, they have plans to do so soon. The website looks good so I will give them a try when they start in AD. M

I will get on with the attestation of everything! My husband recently got his degree certificate apostilled at the Foreign Office then had it attested/verified by a notary public - is this the process I need to go through with all my docs? We have quite a lot to have attested - 4 birth certificates, decree absolute, marriage certificate and 3 degree certificates - hopefully I can get a good deal on price if I get them all done together!

Thanks everyone for this wealth of information. I am going to speak with my new employer about getting my profession as lawyer on my visa as it certainly appears to help with sponsorship issues. Also, it is nice to hear that other women work full-time with families and cope, albeit with good organisation, as you advise. Both my children are still babies, so I will have to speak with the nursery about the arrangements for transportation or look into booking a regular taxi or driver for my Mum to collect them unless I can locate accommodation within walking distance. Thanks again Maria

Thanks everyone for all the great tips. My employer does not want certified certificates so I was not going to bother but I will get them sorted now I know other agencies will require it. Will also get sunscreen and passport photo sorted, and of course, stock up on drinks at duty free! Really looking forward to getting to AD now! With kind regards Maria

Thanks Busybee2 My employer has confirmed I can definitely sponsor my husband and children. As for my mum, I am not so sure. She will come on a visit visa to start off with, then, if she wants to stay longer, we will look into whether I can apply for an annual residency visa for her, but as you say I think that may be restricted to certain professions. I am a lawyer but I am not being employed as a lawyer in UAE. That said, I will be providing legal services so I think I will ask my new employer about the possibility of employing me as a lawyer. I had been looking at Khalidiya Village so your recommendation gives me assurance that it has what we are looking for. It is sometimes hard to know if you have got your bearings right when looking at the maps and various neighbourhoods on the internet. If Khalidiya Village is the right location, we will just have to stretch the budget! With kind regards Maria

Thanks Busybee2 I agree ADCB looked the best. HSBC interest rate was much higher! My new company have offered me a salary which has an accommodation allowance and car allowance built in so I am expected to procure both myself out of my salary, as you indicated. I get a months free accommodation so hopefully, that will give me enough time to sort out financing for annual rent and find a suitable home. With kind regards Maria

Thanks Busybee2 My job title is a Senior Consultant working for a consultancy that deals with construction claims and arbitrations. I am trained as and currently work as a lawyer although I am not going to be employed as a lawyer in UAE. However, as you indicate, if my job title makes a difference to my ability to sponsor a maid's visa, I may need to ask if I can be employed as a "lawyer" - the work I am doing is providing legal services. However, my husband also intends to find a job in construction as a commercial manager, so hopefully he would be able to provide sponsorship. Is it OK for my mother to look after the children if I am not paying her and she has a valid visa (either by regular renewal or annual parent residency)? I would be glad to hear from any mothers who use the transport provided by nurseries to find out if nursery staff accompany the children on the journey home or if the children are left with the driver to be collected at the other end. Also, are children dropped off at their homes or at designated collection points? I apologise in advance if my queries seem gauche, it is just that I have not had experience of this kind of drop-off service provided by nurseries Many thanks Maria

I have looked at the websites of the three banks you recommended Sarahlou, and can see that the option to borrow the money is available and pretty simple, so thanks for putting my mind at rest! Maria
