My son who is nearly 9 yo wears light trousers all through the winter. He never puts shorts in December or January. He has one cardigan for the fresh mornings and especially for inside as it is often very cool in the malls, cinemas etc. Flipflops are ok for the beach. I think kids as well as adults must have appropriate clothes for different occasions. Trainers will be obligatory if your kids practice sports. It is rare but from time to time we have few really cool days here. Last winter people bought heaters, this winter was ok without it. I remember we went to watch a tennis final and were frozen at the stadium :)

The Russan, YellowCanary, make sure that your kids don't speak ... English when they come to play together :) This is a commun issue :) In which part of the city do you, both, live? I'd join you depending on the location... (I'm in Motor city). I have a trilingual girl who is turning 4 next month. My elder son is 9 and he is perfectly bilingual (speaks, reads and writes the both native latguages) so I can share my experience with you. edited by marykar on 27/05/2014

Hitler in the Studenland is probably a historical fact. But what do you know about the actions of Putin in Ukraine? Are you an expert or your knowledge is based on the TV anti-Russian reports?

Oh, really, "Buckingham Palace bombed twice and the Queen Mum's shooting lessons" are serious arguments in the discussion :) The UK with their 370 000 of victims in the 2d World War may probably make jokes about Fascism. But Russia with its 26 600 000 human lives lost during the 2d World War certainly doesn't accept any ridiculous comments about Fascism.

[b'>Purpleviolet[/b'>, if the location doesn't matter much for you, I can advise you another nice new school that is going to open in September. You will certainly have a chance to get places for the both kids as the school is new and they just start to enroll. Famous group GEMS will open its first school in Doha. It will be American curriculum. The school will be situated in AL Wakra. The opposite from West Bay but the accommodation is considerably cheaper there and there are plenty of brand new compounds and apartments. http://www.gemsamericanacademy-qatar.com/ Have a look. It will be a nice place to study.

I wish all the best to SEK school, it is warm and friendly for kids. I don't know if they learn much in the upper grades but the preschool is nice. It looks more empty than full this year but I am sure that it will grow progressively. Any way with 2 new schools opening near by in September West Bay will be well served by schools.

SEK is a nice new school with IB curriculum. I'm sure they have places. It will be their second year and they increase the number of classes progressively. But they are in West Bay just near to Univerity patrol station. Not sure if the location is suitable for you as the accomodation is quiet exp here....My daughter is in preschool 3 there, ask me whatever you want. edited by marykar on 12/05/2014

Just want to add that last year my daughter didn't do well at all at the assessment :) they spent one hour with her before to get a single word :) but they took her :) I think it is a kind of procedure to respect, kind of face control. They need students more than students need them as they are a new school and not known in Doha. More over, at least 2 new schools will open just next street in September, so the concurrence is high in the area :)

My daughter is at preschool 3 at SEK and we love it. It is a new school, they put an effort to get the reputation. We have a native English speaking teacher and a spanish assistant. The kids are mainly Europeans. The school stuff is friendly and helpful. The number of classes will increase year after year, so I think it wouldn't be difficult to get a place at this school. Just make sure that your kid is fluent in English AND make sure that you really want IB curriculum because in early years it is fine enough, amusing, but at the last stages the child would need more serious school if he or she pretend to enter some serious high school. call the head teacher directly, her name is Vivian, she is very helpful, but don't waste your time on communication with the secretary :)

Hi, I planned to travel from Europe to Dubai with my cat by Emirates and was surprised to find out that all the pets arriving to Dubai as a final destination should travel as cargo only (not as a checked baggage). I travel often with my cat by AirFrance and QatarAirways and always check in the cage with the cat, pay the extra and that's it. May be I misunderstood something? Does it mean that my cat cannot take the same plane with me as it is supposed to be in cargo?

We've got a place easily as I was one of the first to apply on the 20th of January. I have few questions about this school. Could I contact you by email, please? I am fluent in French as my husband is French and I spent 9 years in France :) Please, write me to [email protected] Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi, Could anyone share the experience regarding the importation of a car to Dubai from other Gulf countries? What should be done to export a car from Qatar to Dubai (cause of relocation)? The car was bought new in July 2013 and paid cash (no credit on it). We didn't know that we would move away from here just in a year time... What paper work is required and taxes to be paid in UAE? The car will apparently be sent by the sea... Thank you!

Hi, I am wondering if there is anyone who might want to start a cat-sitting / cat-feeding Circle in West Bay Lagoon compound or on the Pearl, Zig Zag towers area. My West Bay Lagoon friend has left - we used to feed each others' cats when the other was away - and so... I would not mind to come to feed a dog as well...

I have a friend who has lived there for 6 months. My advise : if you can avoid to live there, AVOID it!!! My friend was imposed to live there as her hisband's company rents half of the compound for its staff. But the school of the child was in west bay. As a result,At least one hour in the morning and one hour to come back. I've been there and seen the facilities. They are ok. The villas are huge. But... No charm. They are just huge boxes. And don't forget that if you live there you live in the desert! The desert is everywhere around comming inside during the sand storms. My friend posted pics on FB of the sand entering the villa non stop, I don't have this in West Bay! It is hotter there than in WB as well, at least +3 C more than in West Bay. And no wind from the sea. My friend managed to move to Riviera gardens due to her pregnancy. The company exceptionally accepted the move. Do all you best to be nearer to WB because the real good life is there...

We moved to Doha in October 2012. We are all French, born in France, married in France. My husband got his ID in April 2013 only because he leaves Doha very often and travels abroad. His company could not apply for a RP as he could not stay long here and wait till it is ready. Finally they managed to sort it out. Me and kids still don't have ID. We live on a tourist visa, the company pays us a trip in business class to neighbouring countries every 2 months. We like to move nd visit so it's not a problem for me. I say all that just to witness that it is not dramatic to live here without a local ID. My son is 8 yo and of course he is at school. My daughter is at the nursery and I subscribed her for a school for the next school year. Since last October nobody ever asked me to present an ID, the same for the kids. They can go to school without a RP. I don't expect to get my papers done before next Christmas. So, don't worry. It will take the time that it needs, you can live here happily without a RP! edited by marykar on 30/05/2013

It is NOT bad at all! We live in West Bay Lagoon and every morning I drive along this road to our school that is in West Bay (United Nations street) It takes me MAXIMUM 20 mins. I leave home at 07:20 and normally at 07:35 I am at the parking of the school. Many frightening things were said about major road works in this area but finally NOTHING awful happened! They built a parallel road that is not worse that the original one. The situation didn't change for the worse. In fact Nothing changed since the old road is closed! I think it is great to live in this area and work in WB. You cannot be placed better in Doha than that! edited by marykar on 22/05/2013

Markar I don't think anyone's trying to frighten anybody. There are just trying to give there honest opinion. It is better I think to know what to expect. In our first year of being here the temperatures were hitting 50 plus in May . No joke. May and June can be the worst time for heat combined with dust storms. This year is unusual, that we had cooler weather up till now. Yes it can be frightening. This is not pleasant even with the cars AC stuck waiting in traffic with young children is no fun. I know when we first arrived my school journey was 45 mins each way that was equal to 3 hrs a day in the car just for school run.Honestly whatever you do consider your journey times and be close to school ,home or work if possible edited by alee on 18/05/2013 We say the same thing in a different way. I just don't want Mummywatson think that it is +46C all the year around here. There is a couple of difficult months but most of the time it is pleasant (even for the British who got used to the cold weather and rain :)) As her husband is a teacher, I guess they will never stay here in summer and leave just after the end of the school year. But I would not advise her to live in AKG. This compound is very far from the school of her husband. Every Saturday morning I spend 35 mins at 8h30 and about 50 mins on the way back at 11h00! I personnaly would prefer to live in an apartment in West Bay than in a villa in AKG. This compound resembles an army camp. Blocks of beton terraced houses without any piece of green, just a flower pot at the entrance... yes, they have lots of facilities (shop, car wash, even a kindergarden) but the whole spirit is depressive for me.

Maryland My husband has to be into work at 7 and he ALWAYS goes into work at least an hour before so he would be leaving around 5:30/6. What is the traffic like at this time if the day? It depends from where he will drive to DCWB. If you live in Ain Khalid, he will need 1h15 in the morning. I live near to the future job of your husband and I know Ain Khalid very well but I go there only on Saturday morning once a week. Personnally I dislike this compound, why do you want to stay there? If your husband works in West Bay that is the niciest place in Doha to live and work, why do you want to live so far in a hot dusty area? Your life will be also sweeter in West Bay! At 11 000 Qr you can take a villa in Garafa or an apartment in WB ( not pearl).

There is a huge volume of traffic and both Sherborne and DC West Bay are very far from Ain Khaled. Should you wish to take places at either of the said schools then i would seriously reconsider the area that you choose to live in. You will be spending hours driving as well as pulling out your hair and seriously hating Qatar due to the time you will be spending in your car!!! You could consider living near Landmark or Gharaffa for easy access to Sherborne. There are plenty of decent compounds at reasonable prices in that area. For DC West Bay you may want to consider West Bay, West Bay Lagoon, The Pearl as well as the Landmark, Al Markiya and Gharaffa area. I live in West Bay Lagoon with a child in Sherborne and my school run is 30 mins each way! Unfortunately it is a fact of life here that there is very little joy in school runs so the closer you can live to the school the easier your life will be. Distances may look close on the maps but the time spent due to the volume of traffic makes for a very long journey. Hope this may be of some help. It is all true! I live in WB Lagoon and drive to Ain Khaled compound once a week on Saturday morning for private lessons of my son. It takes me 35 mins on the EMPTY road. Just afraid to imagine what it could be during the week. It is true that in Garafa there is a lot of new villas at the reasonable price. edited by marykar on 18/05/2013

The only apartments near WB that I know your budget would match would be Zig Zag Towers, but I wouldn't recommend them (maybe that's just me being fussy?). Maybe the Pearl, but I doubt it, I think they start at around 13 - 14k. Perhaps some Pearl/WB ladies would be able to comment. You would definitely get more for your money on the Ain Khalid/Abu Hamour side of town. You really (seriously) need to stay as close as possible to work - the traffic is diabolical and unbearable when you're stuck in a car for an hour in 46C heat. You should not frighten new-commers in such a terrific way :) For the present moment we haven't experienced +46C. It was +42C few days ago but only at noon and only during one day. It's hot only in summer and they will be always away in summer. As for the traffic, yes, it is a problem here but it depends where you need to go and at what time. I live in WB Lagoon and my husband works not far from the airport (the opposite), he leaves home at 6:00 and doesn't have any traffic problems on his way.

The cost of schooling in Doha is high in terms of value for money, and given that more and more people now have to pay there own fees. It can be debatable how worth while it is bringing your family to Doha as it often wipes out any chance of saving while your here. School fees for some schools are approaching 70,000. For example DC secondary 10,000 deposit, 20000 per term 5,000 capital fee and approx 3000 admin costs all payable before your child walks through the door.Do I think it's worth it, not sure given that the schools maintained poorly and teaching is of a very mixed standard.. Primary school fees are cheaper , however there won't be too many cheaper than 42000. You must be joking. Average school fees for primary are about 25 000 QR in Doha. Few examples that I know: French school Bonaparte 17 000 Qatar International school 22 000 Newton international school Lagoon 20 000 Doha College anout 30 000 Only one school is so expensive - Compass. About 60 000 From where does this strange price comes? 46 000 for primary for a new school that nobody knows!

I am organising a pet transport company to fly our cat over from Australia to Doha. I was wondering if anyone else had experience doing this with their pets? So far it is costing around two thousand dollars. I have just been given a quote of another thousand on top to get an agent to organise the Qatar animal import permit and to take him through customs. This cat is getting EXPENSIVE! Do these prices seem right and what experiences have you had? Incredible! No other word comes to my head! Will you cat travel with you or alone? If alone, I have nothing to say. But if the cat travels with you and you just need an import permit + flight cost (by weight) it is too expensive! I have personally been to the governmental veterinary Clinique in Doha and I know that a export/import permit costs peanuts! You even don't need a rabies test to import your cat to Qatar. Just all the necessary vaccines and that's it! My friend imported her cat from the UK in December. The cost was about 500 GBP (by pet relocators) edited by marykar on 10/05/2013

The Pearl is a place that people love or hate :) I personnally know many girls that live there and adore it, they never move during the day from there saying that there is all that they need. As for the building standards, they are very poor and low everywhere in Doha. Any house or an appartment in any area is not up to the European standards here. If you got used to live in an apptmnt, you will likere there. It is not a bad place at all. We live near buy and go to have a walk from time to time with the kids.

Thank you so much for the driving info - I hear that driving in Doha is like a ride on the Dodgers at the fair....mind you I learned to drive in Italy so I can hold my own but the stories of expat vs Qatari traffic prangs is a bit extreme! On a completely different note, does anyone know any teachers at Newton Lagoon or parents with kids who go there? My husband starts there next week and my daughter after xmas. My daughter especially is anxious about going to a school where she doesn't know a soul. I learned to drive in Russia :) even worse than in Italy :) But now after driving for more than a month here, still cannot believe my eyes from time to time. Often I want to go out from the car and ask, "sweet heart, where did you learn to drive?" They are like from the jungle here. The fines are high, a lot of cameras everywhere, speed checks, police at every R/A but still a mess on the roads! As for the Newton International, I heard a lot of negative comments and know several mothers who left this school as soon as they managed to get a place at other places... Sorry to say that but many people are not happy with this school. The main reproaches concern the vague standards and methods of teaching, the absence of books... Hopefully your husband will contribute to the imporvements... edited by marykar on 04/12/2012

I use SMA lactofree formula - I know I could switch to soya but it takes awful and has so much more sugar in it - probably to mask to taste! I am going to bring some with me but have visions of being told to open them at customs and taste each one! No pbm at all. I'll have a look at the supermarket and ask at a pharmacy. Don't worry, the custom doesn't check up the bags at the airport upon the arrival. It is very very rare. Any way it is legal to bring formula, you don't break any rules. My kids have no intolerances but I got used to buy HIPP organic in the UK and in France and was upset not to find it here, just a question of a habbit. So, next time my husband goes for business to Europe, I plan to make a stock :) edited by marykar on 04/12/2012

Here's the expat woman's link on info http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/monthly_qatar_guide_Drivers_License_6185.aspx would suggest you liaise with your hubby's PRO for definitive info . Exactly as you say: the article that you quote just confirm: "However, if you have an international driving licence, there is no time limit." So, still don't understand why some people make temporary licences? Probably the UK didn't sign the convention and doesn't deliver this kind of licence (the case for the USA for example) As for me, I am a French passport holder and don't have any problem to drive with my international driving licence... You won't be able to get a Qatari driving license until you have your RP and that depends on how good your husband's employer's PRO is and how motivated employees are on the day at the Ministry. Usually 3 or 4 weeks. Good luck. 3-4 weeks sound optimistic. Actually it take 2-4 months to make the ID. People arrived in September, they just start to get news... The visa can be renewed once, then it is necessary to have a short trip out of the country to renter as a tourist. A lot of delay for the papers at the moment.

You can get a temporary driving licence before you get your RP, it needs renewed every 30days like your visa which is a bit of a pain but lets you drive if you'd like to rent a car initially. Hey, girls, I don't know what you are speaking about? European passports holders can make an international driving licence at home before the departure and it lets you drive here till you don't get the ID. Why do you ask for temporary one???

We have a house organised by husbands company but think it is away from centre so might involve driving!!! Thank you ladies for suggestions of things to do when I come over but does anyone know if there is anything planned for new year or where the best place to go would be. Thank you Hi! Seriously it looks like all the Aberdeenshire has moved to Qatar :) I meet crowds of Scotish guys wherever I go and whatever I do. We have sattled down very well, I love here. Don't worry to be far from "the Center". What is the Center for you? You need to be near to your school and work and probably you will not need to go to "the Center" at all. I know lots of people living in Al Waab or around the airport that never go to the Center! Where is your school and where will be your villa? As for the parties, yes, there are lots of venues planned. Just buy Doha go out magazine at any supermarket and you will find a place for your taste. No need to worry! Doha is worth Aberdeen and even better :)

I have to add that this made me smile too. There is a florist at the entrance to Megamart. I don't know what they are like though. Maybe an inquiry at one of the large hotels as to where they get their flowers. I just buy lilies at Lulu and the guy puts them together with some greenery and babys breath, and they last a few weeks. The roses droop straight away. You could just try exquisite and high taste chocolates instead:) Sorry, I got used to have flowers at home and chocolates make ladies fat :) What a great idea for a business for those who are capable! Didn't know that this field is still empty here. Have seen this awful flower stand at megamart as weel. Also asked myelf the same quisetion every time... Though at my hotel they manage to have very lovely flower designs! Going to ask the reception from where it come from!
