A friend asked me a question and I don't know the answer so thought I'd ask on here... How does one do a wedding registry here?? Aparently there are no on line registries but can you do an in store one in places like Pottery Barn and Bloomingdales and Galleries Lafayette?? If not, then what does one do? And if yes, well, then what? I know it's not good form to add a list of where you're registered to your wedding invite but here where one has little family and your friends don't necessarily know each other, you can hardly pass on the info by word of mouth. Thanks in advance for any advice/opinions.

Don't know the mumsnet thread to which you refer but I think it's an excellent article (hope you weren't posting in a tut-tut-wag-my-finger-at-the-person-who-wrote-it sort of way!)

The bags are considered better because they don't get kicked off but more importantly they're considered safer because a blanket can end up over the baby's face. My 2 year old has been - and still is - in sleeping bags since she was born and I LOVE them. So does she! She now asks to go into her bag. To the OP, the one my little girl is currently in is 2.5 TOG and she wears thin PJs with long sleeves with no vest or anything like that underneath. You have to consider what the baby is wearing because that adds to the total warmth TOG. Even the nappy, apparently. And our room temp is 20/21. When she was a newborn, I always had her in a little cotton singlet and then she wore the one piece baby jumpsuits with the feet (sorry... brain is fried and words just not coming to me!) and she was in a 1.5 or a 2 TOG

Thank you. Really appreciate it. Will get as close as I can with the directions you gave and then ring. By the sounds of it, it wouldn't take long to get there from here anyway. Thanks again for all your help.

Oh noooo... We're supposed to be there at 9am and they don't open earlier than that so don't know that I'll be able to ring before going. But maybe I can head out in that direction and ring from close by. I'd be coming from the Springs along Al Khail to Emirates Road. Are you able to tell me anything more?? Would SO appreciate it. Why is it so impossible to find any info on directions?? ETA: THANK YOU!!! And would really appreciate that map if your husband is up to it! edited by m_king on 27/01/2012

Gosh! Thanks ladies!! Had no idea service fees were so high! Although, we wouldn't have a mortgage. But still. Can you tell me if there are any other expenses to consider besides the service fees? I would be interested to know what the DEWA bills might amount to for a 1bed or 2bed just to know how much we might be out of pocket if the place isn't occupied. Sorry... I know I must sound like a complete morton but I've (clearly) never looked into this before... if the place isn't occupied, IS there any DEWA to pay?? I mean, is there something you have to pay regardless of whether water or electricity is being used? Or are you simply not hooked up with DEWA if there's no one there and so you don't have to worry about it? I take it there;s no change to the service fees whether the flat is occupied or not, right? Thanks so much. edited by m_king on 22/01/2012

Good grief... Ok, let me begin by apologizing if I sound a bit abrupt and I realize you may simply be trying to be helpful, but, ladies, I just want to know if anyone has any advice on how to get qualified; I'm not looking for a career counselor. I'm well aware what the teaching situation is like in Ontario. Half y family teach in Ontario. Unfortunately they were all qualified in Ontario and don't know anything about trying to get qualifications whilst out of Ontario. I myself have no intention of returning to Ontario for a number of years yet but am still interested in getting my degree. So, again, apologies if you're just trying to help but I really just want to know if anyone out there knows anything about becoming a qualified teacher here in Dubai, if anyone might know if said qualifications would be accepted in Ontario, and if they wouldn't be, then if anyone knows what getting certified once in Ontario would then entail. Thank you.

Thanks, yes, that's what I did. Contacted the Ontario College of Teachers. That's where I'd be going. And in Ontario they offer both the concurrent BEd with a BA or BSc and also the option of consecutive, ie: completing your degree and then doing 1 year od education courses. But I don't want to wait till I get there to do the 1 year. So, anyone from Ontario who can advise??

Thinking of buying a flat to rent out in the Greens and just wondered if anyone on here is doing the same and if you can advise on how good or bad an idea this is. From what I see in terms of sales and rentals on Dubizzle, it looks like you are basically up for making a 10% interest on your investment. But I have no idea what costs to the landlord might be... DEWA, community fees, etc... Thanks in advance. m

I'm so sorry about your first try. There is nothing more devastating than the let down after the build up. I've been there eight times. Just saying I know it's hard. And as Perces says, I firmly believe that stress is your worst enemy and that you HAVE to find a way to 'relax'. And again, as Perces says, that in itself is stressful because it's so damn hard to relax under those circumstances. So, I second the notion that if acupuncture helps you relax, then go for it. Just don't full yourself into thinking it's some secret miracle way of making IVF work. I know many women who've tried acupuncture when doing IVF and they've gotten pregnant and equally, many who\ve done it and have not become pregnant. Funnily enough, I know several women (myself included) who finally got pregnant when they'd pretty much given up or for whatever reason, believed that a particular try was not going to work. Supports the idea that stress is a major factor because when you give up or believe a try isn't going to work for whatever reason, you don't stress over it. So anything you can think of to take your mind off things... maybe have a friend come visit (one you won't sit and obsess with but rather, who you will feel a need to entertain and show around). Or maybe, if you can take the time, go away for at least a part of that dreaded 2 week wait. Also, do try to remember that it is faaaaar more common for it NOT to work the first time than it is for it to work. I was assured that our case was a no brainer and we'd most likely get pregnant within the first couple of tries ... and it took EIGHT! The very best of luck to you.

My toddler's passport expires on the 20th of Jan and I was hoping to renew it while here in Canada for Christmas but didn't realize I needed her citizenship card and birth certificate which are back in Dubai so can't do anything here! I figured it was no big deal as she does have her UAE residency which is valid until 2013 and we leave Toronto on the 17th of Jan and are back on the 18th so we can just renew the passport back in Dubai. But now I'm being told by a friend that the Canadian consulate has advised her that you can't get back into the UAE if you don't have at least 6 months validity on your passport regardless of having a valid residency visa. Can anyone advise??? Thanks.

Thanks very much ladies, but now am a bit confused, so the application is there on the phone? It just doesn't work locally but it works if at least one person is not in the UAE? If that's the case, that's fine. DH wants a blackberry or iphone and is leaning towards iphone as he'd like to use it to speak with his 3 daughters in Oz who all have iphones and with me here in Dubai when he's travelling abroad for work. So as long as it works if one person is out of the UAE, that's fine. Don't know if it makes any difference that mine is not from here. Thanks again.

Ok, now I'm the one resurrecting... I didn't realize how many people had posted on here! Dubaicat, the way you describe it is EXACTLY how it was for me. Yes, note the "was". I've had VERY mixed feelings about posting this but decided, it could help someone so... Aside from the wild imagination, I've had a hard time with health. I do have a fairly serious health condition but I kept finding all these completely unrelated things wrong with me and each would make me freak out and wonder what OTHER serious health condition I might have. It got ridiculous because I was constantly worried to the extreme and I have a hard time getting to the doctor because of my little one. When I did finally go see my doctor, I had a list! Now, in fairness to myself, the fact of having the list made me point out to my doctor that I was beginning to wonder if I had a 'problem' and needed help. I said this half jokingly but she took me very seriously and suggested something that had never crossed my mind and which, frankly, I wasn't convinced would help. She prescribed an anti-depressant. Prozac to be specific. Within about 3 weeks I started to feel like a different person. At first I was concerned that my new found state of mind was chemically induced and not 'real' and then I realized it's quite the contrary... the previous state of mind was chemically induced (due to a chemical imbalance) and the tablets have put things right. I still worry about my child and my health but it feels normal now. It's not constant and totally uncontrollable and quite so frightening and overwhelming. It's manageable. I'm not doing this justice but I cannot put into less than a few pages, the extent to which this has made a difference in my life. I think about it several times a day. About how lucky I am to feel the way I do now. I feel this immense sense of relief. I described it to my husband the other day saying it's as if you've spent your life with something constricting your chest so you can never take a full breath but you never realized that that wasn't just the way you were. And then you get rid of the constraint and who knew breathing could be so easy and feel so natural and make you feel so good???? Sorry if I sound silly but I wanted to say this because maybe someone else out there would benefit form this as much as I did.

Ugh... Was about to make reservations when I realized I'm nuts to think I can go for lunch! Was going to leave our little one with a friend who I've left her with before and who she loves. But lunch time is her nap time and she's never napped with someone else! Even if she's ok, I'll be too stressed to enjoy! Sooo... can anyone recommend somewhere with abidance where we can go WITH a 2yo?? Any good weekday buffets? Or would Beach Bar and Grill be ok with a little one? How about Boardwalk? Is that part of the Park Hyatt? Isn't it the outdoor deck place? Thanks all.

LaurelleafPhotography.com Can't recommend Laurel enough. Her photos speak for themselves and she's a wonderful person who is so full of energy and yet so easy going. I can't imagine anyone feeling anything but very comfortable with her. My two year old is a bit of a disaster infront of the camera but Laurel's taken some wonderful photos of her.

I've gone through IVF eight times (the 8th being successful thank goodness) and would be more than happy to answer questions. My email is mercedes dot king71 at gmail dot com And a forum that helped me keep a hold - tenuous though it may have been - on my sanity through it all was medhelp.com. They have a huge number of different medical forums but one is for fertility and LOADS of people on there are doing IVF.

You can also try going to the home folder in your finder. That is, the one that's your name or whatever you've named your mac. Then go to the Downloads folder and sort by size so you can see what the biggest items on there are. This can work but all depending on what sort of stuff you download, if anything. If you download movies and stuff like that then they'll eat up space on your hard drive. Assuming you've watched them and don't need to keep them or assuming you have other stuff on there that is taking up space and that you don't need on your computer, you can move them to the trash. Don't forget to empty your trash!

If it helps any, real estate is expected to come down in TO "shortly". I think, by that, they mean a matter of months. And lets up my minimum if there's five of you!!!!! Oakville is nice. But it's really hard to say where you should look. Toronto's pretty big! But how about North York. I'm thinking somewhere not too far off Yonge St as Yonge through N York is quite nice. Forgive me. I left TO about 12 yrs ago so although I go back every summer I'm kinda out of touch. Maybe some of the other Canadians on here can give you more info.

Ooof... Bit of a loaded question. All your questions depend very much on what your definitions of 'nice' and 'reasonable' and the like are. And whether you're referring to the city of Toronto or Greater Toronto which includes suburbs. As well as the size of your family and whether you plan to rent or buy a place. Personally, for a couple with 1 child, I would say you would need a minimum household income of about CAD $160,000.
