Does anyone know where one can buy the local clay pots and candle holders? You know the ones? I saw them out at Sahara Desert Resort but I've seen them elsewhere too. They're decorative with bits cut out so when you stick a light or candle inside it looks really pretty. I know you can get them on the road to Fujairah but I'm wondering if you can get them elsewhere. Isn't there a market on the way to RAK?? My mum wants to buy a couple and I don't mind driving, I just didn't particularly want to go to Fujairah and I wanted to make it a bit of a day trip of it. Many thanks

Thanks Oopsiedaisy. Don't worry... I'm not up for a tit for tat. I just want to understand the situation because the poor maid came to apologise to me. She said she sees my husband walking our dog every morning when she's walking the other people's dog and they always say good morning and nothing like this has ever happened before. But now the guy has fired her over this because it's her fault (how? I DON'T know!!!) And she told me that she's on her own visa and working illegally. I'm not making assumptions. According to her, municipality are coming tonight and she's been told to get her things and go before they show up. Interestingly when I told her that I didn't realise my dog had hurt the other dog, she said she hadn't realised either. She said that she was in a room ironing when her employer came home and a short while after he got in, he came charging into the room with the dog, kicked over the ironing board and broke it and shoved the dog in her face demanding to know what had happened. Then he locked her out of the house and came charging over to ours. I'd have put it down to being distraught over his dog if it weren't for the fact that he lifted him off the ground by his leash and stretched his face with his other hand (!!!!) to show us the wound!!!

Thanks FairyDust. He's a Dubai Special - saluki... maybe golden retriever ??? He's a big suck who... as you say... sometimes gets aggressive with some dogs if they are on leash and he isn't. We know this. We're careful. Obviously not careful enough. My husband went and talked to the neighbour but he wouldn't budge. Said he was too worried about the safety of his children!! My husband tried to explain that our dog has been on this compound for 6 years, all the compound kids know him and play with him and he has never hurt or tried to hurt one of them ever. Equally he has never hurt our child from the ages of 2 through 7, or either one of our cats, or our Guinea *** who he plays with in the garden. This is NOT an aggressive dog. Sadly, my neigbour doesn't give a $hit whose fault it is or what happens to my dog. He clearly doesn't care much about his own dog. Pointing out his behaviour to him would not make an iota of difference. You would understand immediately if you met him. How can people be so evil??? I honestly think he's trying to get back at me because he and his wife upset my daughter int he pool the other day. She told me when I showed up (she was there with a friend and her mum). I went over to ask them if there was a problem because I thought it fairly disgusting that they would approach a 7 year old rather than speak to the adult with her. He actually smiled at me and said he had no idea what I was talking about as they hadn't said a word to my daughter. You should have seen the look of shock on her face when he said this in front of her. I asked if he was suggesting she was making it up and he smiled again and shrugged his shoulders!!!!! These are very strange people!!

Thank you all so much for your replies. Zanzibar does seem on the top ten list of late and I'd have loved to do it. But I checked and it seems end of March would not be a wise time to visit. One of the hotter, more humid times to visit and I don't do so well in hot/humid (says the woman who's spent the better part of her life in the UAE!!! But still, that is sadly the case. Cold I can handle and I'd LOVE to do London but hubby doesn't want to. Jordan is lovely but we've done it more than once. Now Prague... THAT sounds interesting. Is it enjoyable for a 7 year old? I' just afraid that it';s more the sort of place where you're on your feet all day long exploring the architecture and stuff like that and that would bore the little one and perhaps be too much walking for my mum??

My Canadian mum is coming out for 5 months. But due to her age etc, her medical insurance is being quoted at about $3,500. Does anyone know of some well kept secret insurance company that might have great rates? Is there any way I can get her some sort of insurance here although she's no a visit visa??? She's in very good health so she's not too concerned but being 81, she wants to know that she has access to decent health care should anything happen. MANY thanks

Does anyone remember these? You drop the pellets in water and they grow into tall coloured crystal shapes. I found plenty on Amazon but they won't get here in time. Anyone know if they're sold in the Toy Store or Toys R Us or anywhere else out here?? Thanks so much.

It's been a seriously rough year. And my birthday's coming up. And my mum's offering me a spa day. I'm thinking facial, primarily. Any recommendations?? Somewhere really decadent / luxurious. But where I can get a really good facial too... My skin is a MESS! Just a thought... What's the Four Seasons' spa like?? Thanks so much.

ooooh... I like the glitzy globe idea. But then what equivalent would I give the boys? And yes, potion bubbles are a good idea. I can't do the cape and wizard hat because everyone will be a different type of magical 'creature' But, Cherpie, do you know where I can get the magic trick packages?? I was thinking of that but have no idea where to find them.

Thank you ladies. Yes, all sounds good. I was kind of hoping for some way to ensure all get equal numbers what with it being such a big group and such a wide range of ages. But then there's also the problem of what to put in the eggs because of the ages and not wanting anything that's specifically 'girly' or 'boyish'! Will have a bit ore of a google. Thanks again.

Thanks very much Geordie Expat. Not at all fussed about being further back! And quite happy to just sit on the grass if need be  (I didn't actually think they allowed chairs in??) But from what you're saying, worst case scenario, if I'm feeling massively claustrophobic, all I need do is move back and get some air, right? ETA: I was planning on the regular standing room in any case and not the golden circle or whatever it's called as would rather have space than be close and being that the closer tickets aren't unreasonably expensive, I imagine that section will be fairly packed. edited by m_king on 03/02/2015

Thanks carymama. Clas Ohlson looks interesting! Never been. Unfortunately, can't find what I'm looking for at either! I'm trying to find one of those wire racks for stacking frying pans. Similar to the ones for storing various size dishes but bigger. If anyone has seen such an animal in Dubai... PLEASE let me know. My frying pans are driving me up the wall!!!

Oh my goodness! Thank you LinaS! I was checking the forum on my phone and was assuming replies would be at the top of the thread for some reason so didn't realise you had replied when I bumped. Thanks for all the info. Unfortunately, I don't actually have my masters. But I was already figuring I would probably need to get it. Would you have any idea if I can do anything in the meantime with an undergrad in psych? Thanks again.

May I please have some recommendations for tried and tested orthopedic surgeons? My husband's wrist is causing him increasingly excruciating pain and I seem to have suddenly developed pain in the joints of two fingers on one hand! We've both been to an ortho to whom we were referred by Dubai London Clinic but considering our combined experiences, the man is COMPLETELY out to lunch. And that's being supremely polite!! Many many thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any idea how one might be able to go about setting up a bank account or some such whereby charitable donations can be received? I would like to do this for someone who could seriously do with some help but I want to do it in such a way that if anyone is considering donating, they can be assured that their donation is legitimately going toward the purpose advertised. Many thanks

Can anyone recommend from where to order good finger sandwiches?? Hubby has just been informed last minute that he has some important visitors being sent his way and he's going to have to do a bit of a presentation for them and a tour and various other stuff. They'll be with him over lunch and a powerpoint presentation with Q&A is planned for the lunch so he wants some nice sandwiches but proper finger sandwiches that can be easily eaten whilst working (as opposed to something messy). Much appreciated if anyone has any ideas.

Found some decent looking ones in Baby Shop! There are lots of different ones... individual plates and boxed sets too. I found one boxed set that looked nice enough and they had a range... Nemo, Planes, Whinnie the Pooh, and a princess one or some such. Thanks ladies

I got my 4YO a spot in a swimming class. She's a beginner. Not afraid of water at all but can't swim at all either. Now the class is 30 minutes and there are 5 kids, which means that each kid gets 6 minutes!! I know nothing about swimming classes so I don't know if this is the norm. But to pay upwards of 600 Dhs for a term of 6 mins per class seems a bit odd to me. Anyone have any input on this? Is it the norm?? Do the kids learn to swim this way despite the limited time ch one gets because they benefit from seeing other kids in the same boat?? No idea... any advice appreciated. Thanks
