Lime Tree Cafe for me. Always in there around 5.55pm on the way home from work grabbing what's left to take away for that nights dinner (& a sneaky cake of course) It's still lovely even though it's been sat in the glass window all day :)

I've just had visitors & they rented an apartment in Al Habool on the palm. Went through velvet holidays (or something like that) It cost them 1600GBP for 10 days. Apartment had 3 bed + maids (single bed box room) I thought it was lovely and well worth the money. Taxi's were parked up outside almost 24/7 so no hassle there. Hope that helps

We came over to get away from the UK for a while, both bored in our jobs etc....& wanted to save money. It took us a good 4 months over here to get used to things, settling in, then we decided to get some proper advise on savings and now 3 years on we are so glad we did. We've managed to buy another property in the uk to rent (our little pension pot) and also put into a savings plan which is growing nicely. Happy we did this as it was a big worry of ours when we first came out here. We still never miss out on anything, have had a beautiful little daughter in the process and still have the peace of mind that that little nest egg is there growing quite nicely. Happy Thursday Ladies!

He delivered my DD 2 years ago with no problems whatsoever. A very nice chap indeed and an obvious caring professional who listens to you. He mentioned very early on in my pregnancy about c-sections and i told him i wanted to give birth naturally, he never mentioned it again & assured me i would be fine delivering naturally (unlike a few out here that can scare the living daylights out of you with there "It's a big baby" stories) I'll certainly be seeking him out with my next one :)

The men with a van are all parked up around LULU supermarket near Mall of the Emirates. Just drive up, pick which van you want and tell them how many you need & they'll do it there & then. You'll have to negotiate price.

This isn't a "woe is me" post below because i actually love my little routines but just so you get a good idea of what can be done (easily) by your maid. My husband and i work full time (Sun - Thursday 8.30am - 5.30pm) Our 2 year old goes to nursery. We don't live in a 4 bed villa but our 2 bed apartment is larger than your average. We have help 2 hours a week and all she does is wash the pots (if any) and mop & hoover all the floors. We do EVERYTHING else apart from iron DH work shirts as we both hate that job so we take them to the shop downstairs. Our apartment is always clean, the bedsheets get changed once a week, it take 10 minutes maximum to take the sheets off the bed & put them in the washing machine, 5 mins to peg out (or put in dryer), 5 mins to get in & fold and 10 minutes to put back on the bed. In the 2 hours it takes the bedsheets to dry we will both wipe down all surfaces, polish, clean bathrooms etc... Our clothes washing gets put on before we go to bed at night. I'll peg it out in the morning before i leave and get it in at night. Sometimes i'll iron it there & then as it only takes about 20minutes. The only jobs we don't get time to do on a weekly basis are things like cleaning the cooker, washing down bathroom tiles etc....that's more a monthly job. It sounds to me like she is taking you for a little bit of a ride and taking advantage of your obvious kind nature and genorosity. Your also paying her very good wages by the way. I'm not saying cut her wages but you should be expecting never to be writing these threads on here for that. Be firm with her and just tell her. Never let her give you the excuse of not having time either! It's rubbish. You should also be able to leave the house in the morning and expect 3 loads of washing to be done, dry, ironed and put away by the time you get back. The washing machine does the washing not her, all she has to do is load, peg out and unload. Unacceptable to have clothes everywhere when you get back. Good Luck

Paying for DD to play in soft play area festival city: Her: Hello Maaaaaam Me: Hello, can i pay for 1 (pointed at DD) in soft play area? How much please? Her: You only have 1 child maam? That's 50 dirhams. Me: OK thanks, handing over my 50 dirhams Her: Maam, you only have 1 child? (waving my 50Dhs in the air) Me: (Confused as she's just watched me walk in with DD)yes i only have 1 (smiling) Her: Oh Me: Still confused Her: Are you sure you don't want 2? Me: Er yes i think i'm sure, i just told you i only have 1 daughter, why would i want to buy 2 tickets? Her: If you buy 2 then it's only 100Dhs (she says smiling) Me: But i only have 1 child and even if i had 2 i'm not saving anything! Her: But 100Dhs is cheap Me: Give me the wristband please Apart from that it's a great play area for little ones :) Oh & Happy Thursday to you all

I'd take it and here's why.....I flew back to the UK with Emirates & was put in first class complimentary as they had problems checking me in with my doctors letter (7 months pregnant & alone). It turned out that the chap who sat next to me in 1st upgraded from economy to business but they put him in 1st as there were no available seats in business class. Not saying this would happen but you never know! Just a shame i couldn't take advantage of the free flowing champers! edited by Mollydxb on 07/07/2011

I lived there for 2 years & yes you did smell poo but only when the poo lorry came to empty the waste from our building. I think it was twice a week for about 45mins to an hour. Really wasn't an issue. I really miss the peace & quiet, used to sit on the balcony watching the planes come in & the pretty city skyline. You really need to drive though as taxi's can be a little bit of a nightmare, esp thursday nights. edited by Mollydxb on 26/06/2011

Sticky chicken drumsticks and edamame. I marinated the drumsticks in soy sauce, orange juice and ginger and will bake in the oven adding a bit of maple syrup in the final 10 minutes. Kids are 1 and 3. Sounds yummy, i'll be eating that with my DD tomorrow Thanks

What about the Satwa area? There are arenco villa's on street 6a behind the Jumeirah rotana which are not the most glamourous but have lots of character. My friend has just renewed & paid 100,000 in 4 cheques. If you can pay in one i'm sure they'll lower it slightly. I live around that area and love it!

I'm fed up with it too. I love the cooking channels but the same episodes have been on now for 2 years! The same with the kids channels. My 2 year old isn't even bothered about watching it anymore. We've decided to cancel it next month, had enough. They're not bothering to invest in more channels so i'm not bothering paying them. It's about time they started to LISTEN to thier customers. We're not asking for a lot, just what we're already paying for.

We went to Chamas last weekend and thought it was very overpriced. I like the Rodeo grille at Le Meridian, they do wonderful steaks among other things. I've thought about Rodeo Grill a few times but never tried. Will make an effort to go next time :) Is it still 260 per person at Chamas? Compared to places in Dubai i thought that was reasonable.

I got a very long one in Satwa, just a random curtain making shop. Must be about 4 metres but they actually had to cut it down from an even longer one so that might be worth a try. I tried around 3 different shops in Satwa and because each one quoted me a silly price (2500 dirhams) i couldn't even be bothered to play the haggling game. Felt like they were taking the ****. Ideally that's where i'd like to buy as it's round the corner & i KNOW they are cheap. Can you remember which shop & how much you paid? Just for a guide? No worries if not & thanks for the help

We normally visit on a weekday afternoon... there's usually quite a few people around though you're right. Definitely not a place to visit at the weekend though! :D I also have a couple of poles from Ikea, but they're not really that strong and I'm guessing if you're hanging 8-10m worth of proper curtains you're going to need something pretty sturdy!! Also, just a note to make sure you get the stronger brackets too that have a diagonal support in them or are triangle shaped, as the weight of the curtains will buckle the normal L shaped ones. the shops in Dragonmart also offer the two and three pole brackets so that you can hang a voile or sheer curtain behind the main curtains on another pole. HTH It's definetly going to need 3 brackets for solid support. I remember that was the one thing DH did mention when askin me to look. Thanks a lot for the info. I'll pop in one lunch this week. We've been without curtains now for a year & the living room has never felt homely. Hopefull it will soon. Thanks

Ikea should do them have alook at the online dubai catologue to check. Thanks, they do the track rails that you can put together to fit and cut where necessary. Just need to check with DH as i have no idea what that entails.

Are you flying into Glasgow to save on flight price? It would need to be a huge saving to justify the journey & fuel bill. www.travelsupermarket.com/carhire I've used easycar and Hertz previously with no problems. Enjoy your journey Thanks ladies. Mollydxb we are spending 3 weeks in Scotland and 1 SE England so it's not to save money on flights. I have no idea what a tank of petrol would cost for a mid-size car - perhaps 80GBP do you think? Presume at least 2, if not more tanks to get down to SE? Just checked with sis & she drives a seat ibiza 1.2 and that costs 65quid to fill! In the midlands it's an average of 1.33 per litre! I think your pretty much spot on with 80quid for a 1.4/1.6 litre. I've just had an e-mail from easycar with a 10% discount if book now. 5 weeks will cost 540quid with 2 drivers. I really hate the fact i've had to budget for fuel on this trip. Enjoy

I thought the Lime Tree Cafe breakfast was over priced and disappointing. More do a good breakfast. They are a bit pricey i agree (especially the juices) but i've never had a bad 1 yet, i'm not a veggie but i do like their veggie breakfast's. Smoked salmon & scrambled eggs are nice too!
