With EK employees and dependants - are they being fined Dhs20 daily up to the day they apply or till when they actually receive their ID card? Also, has anyone (EK) applied recently from outside EGHQ and got fined or is it only when you apply at EGHQ that they're applying these fines?

Hi - I would like to grow some vegetable in the garden for the first time and not sure when I should be planting them. Is now a good time or have I left it too late for this year?

As I said it's only once a year when there's the 24 hr race. During the day if you're inside the house with doors closed, you can't hear it. It's only at night that you do. Apart from that, living here is amazing - we really love it:)

We're in GCMC and the only time we find the noise annoying is when there is the 24hr race in January. I don't mind the noise during the day as it gets blended with other daytime noises but it gets quite annoying at night. So this year we definitely need to get some good ear plugs.

Ace hardware have them 399dhs. My dh and I spent time last night discussing how lifelike the display tree looked (it even had a really convincing trunk) before we realized it was a real one... Long day! Haha - same thing happened to me - I saw this very real looking Christmas tree and took DH along to Ace to see if he liked it. Turned out it WAS real lol:))

i know it's a long shot as I've been looking for one for years now, but has anyone actually found a good family organiser which starts on a Sunday. I know many people here love the organised mum stuff, but I really really want something which starts with the Dubai week - on Sunday!!

I have 2 large artwork which I'm selling cheaply as they don't fit in our new house. You can e-mail me on [email protected] if you d like me to send you pics and prices. If you like them, they will definitely be cheaper than blowing up your photos and putting them on canvas.

Absolutely. I love mine. Great apps and I have my books, magazines, games everything on it. Can you get a wide variety of books such as the ones you can get for Kindle? I was thinking of getting a Kindle but DH is trying to persuade me to get an i-pad instead.

We re doing our garden right now and we re using The Garden Company. Very happy so far:)) They came up with a great design, we've seen several of their projects and the work is of a high standard (according to DH who is very **** about these things) and so far I haven't had any trouble at all (which is something rare when dealing with landscapers in Dubai).

Funnily enough this incident happened while DH was at coast guard having transponder installed. The coastguard can't help because the coast guard will come out to help you if you're in trouble but since he's already there, they can't do anything. The problem is that there's no slipway at Port Rashid coastguard!!!

Hi - so far we have already painted 2 kitchens in Dubai and both times results have been great - everyone thinks we have done them professionally. We used Jotun paint - oil based. We always went for semi-gloss so not sure what the high gloss would be like though. Good luck and do go for it - it won't cost much, so even if you don't like the result you can always get a professional in to do it then.

I live in a bungalow at Green Community Motor City. Emicool bill for August was Dhs1400 but, same as QB, we also left AC on throughout the whole month even though we were away. Quality wise, I think they re some of the best builds in Dubai. We love living here and we really love the layout of the bungalows. I've seen a couple of For Rent signs around so if you came to have a look around you can always call and have a look. HTH

Thanks TB - Dhs1000 is quite reasonable but as you said Dhs5000 is too steep. It's not as if we're doing a pool or something. I have since checked my contract and it mentions nothing about paying for approval.

Ladies - I'm looking for some info here. Bought a house at Motor City a few months ago and we were just about to start landscaping the garden. We applied for permission from the developer - Union Properties, and after weeks of waiting we have now been informed that approval has been issued but we need to pay Dhs 5000 as a refundable deposit to Union Properties (I understand this) and also DHS 5000 in order for them to issue us with an NOC to take to Dubai Municipality. Is this fee normal or is this something that UP have made up??? I find it so unfair that I have to pay to get permission to landscape my own garden!!!!

I bought one this week for DH but they're out of stock again. Virgin gets new stock every wednesday. I went to the one at MOE at 6pm and they had already sold out. Phoned the one at MCC and the guy who answered the phone reserved one for me so I then quickly went to MCC to pick it up. So I think your best bet is Virgin MCC.

Yes, Definitely check that all contracts are in tact etc... the other thing is are you sure your property hasn't been let to someone off the books? You should get a few agents to go through the property and do a rental appraisal so they can give you an idea of how much they think the property could rent out for, also ask them to give you some ideas of what you can do in order to make the property more attractive (eg, maybe furnished offices are more desirable in the area, or maybe offer a first two months free, as in the long run it will work to your advantage if you're able to rent out the property) Just do a google search "brisbane commercial agents" and a list of agents come up, send them an email saying you have a commercial property and you're looking at engaging a leasing agent, can they please send someone in to have a look and give you a rental appraisal and to send you their fees. You can even find companies which you only pay a % of the rent (usually around 6-9%) rather than paying for advertising as well... Most agents will go in and have a look with no obligation and so its worth you doing the leg work. Another thing to consider is selling, and buying something else that may be easier to rent out... So many great ideas - thanks so much!! We would love to sell it and cash in on it but the agent has told us that the buying/selling market is even slower than the rental one. Maybe whilst searching for other agents, I could also see what they suggest.

Good that the property exists....but....more important is in this case the documentation is watertight that you actually own the property ! We're not worried about that - we are sure the property exists and the documentation is in order. All we want is to rent it out!!

Just a heads up - you can't use Entertainer Vouchers on Valentine's Day :-( In the front part in the conditions it says that they can't be used on New Year's eve, day, mother's/father's day and valentines day. But she's planning on eating out tonight so she should be fine unless they change the date of Valentines Day like they have with the Prophet's birthday! Oops - missed the "tonight" bit - just saw "Valentine's meal" !!

We lived in an apt that was all patio doors - massive massive expanses of glass. We had barely any money to spend so did this: In our living/dining room I had voiles made and then "show" panels for the ends. This gave a good level of privacy and blocked the sun enough when the sun streamed in, but was cheap(ish). As this was the only room that was "on show" we spent a bit more in that room. For the bedrooms (again - massive - all patio doors) we bought poles from ikea (black metal that extend) and the cheap tab top curtains (beige or cream) and used them. I interlinked the last tabs on the pole at each of the "joins" of different panels. e.g in our bedroom I needed six panels (3 pairs of curtains) to cover the glass. I interlinked 3 panels for both sides (leaving the gap in the middle so they could open). It wasn't the most ideal option ever, but it did us fine. Maybe an option? It didn't cost us over 5k for all of it! 3 bedrooms (each with 3 pairs of curtains in them) and then the posher voiles and show panels for the lounge/diner. We have used the ikea making service at other times too and been happy with that. We want to have voiles done in the sitting/dining. Where did you buy your material from and do you remember how much it cost per yard? The ones I found cost around Dhs20 and I'm scared it's too cheap so maybe the quality wouldn't be that good. tia
