Thanks ladies :) Cabbage, this is great for me as like you I don't have credit card any more :) I used to pay online, but now I canceled the card as too much fee for this or that...... and now the system is not accepting the debit one :( I've seen one machine in Dubai mall. I'll try that one :) Thanks again

I think there is no law that says that you can't leave your kids with the kids of your friend, but you will find that this is not common here. I think people are not so trusting and with reason. I too would love to be told different :)

Well as I live and breath...a genuine waste of space. ******. People like that need to be forcibly shown what would happen to the comfort of his 8 month old child when she has been flung out of her mothers arms, kills him with her impact before being flung through a windshield and not only mashed upon a road but in all likely hood run over or impacting on something outside of the vehicle. But no, he wants to save his 400dh. IMO, humble though it is, for a fine to be effective, whether it's 100, 1000, or 10 000, the law will actually have to be enforced unilaterally across the board for all citizens. I won't be holding my breath for that to happen.... An educational campaign (like Buckle Up,) but a highly visually disturbing one, that is on-going for years. It took a generation in our countries for these ideas to take root, and this is a huge step for here. I hope you are wrong :( Just for the sake of all these children that are too small to realize what their parents are doing to them... Couple of years back, my sister had her DL revoked back home as her DD car seat was not properly strapped to the back seat. :) Not no car seat, but not properly strapped! I wish I can see this here :) Dreams .....

And one post says an elder should be allowed to have the toddler on their lap for safety. Can I volunteer this person to be a crash test dummy, please? ooo, yes please ........ I've worked as air-hostess and have gone trough some really scary situations. I can guarantee to anyone that if a very little force is applied to you and your child in your lap...... there is no way you will be able to hold him/her! Even if someone just pushes you while you are holding your child...... the child will be flying at least 1m in front of you! This is not a joke people!

ok, first the car seats are developed and made to be very comfortable. second, yes 400 is better than the alternative - more than 80% of the children under 6 years involved in accidents die. and third, you can get a car seat second hand and pay less than 400 if that is the problem. I must add that if you do not want to spend you should not have children. really, I agree abby_n_christina - how stupid can someone get?!

No need of agent :) Usually the LL drafts the new contract, but that's not difficult as there is a standard contract that you can take from RERA website or at least before it was like that :) otherwise you can make Annex to the old contract and sign it. that is also ok :) edited by mpp_jl on 28/06/2011

Thanks abby_n_christina :) I'll check them, but all these places are very furnished and we have our things too.... We need something with less or no furniture so we can dump our things there too :) I know it's a desperate plea, but I decided to try... :) Maybe someone is leaving on vacation and doesn't mind to rent out their place. I got rid off most of the things we had, but still.... Thanks again :)

Before there was something called airport-to-airport. You just go to the airport and get the stamps from the immigration. Is it still applicable? If yes, you can do that and no need to fly anywhere :)

As this is a surprise for us (grrrrrr...) we need a place to stay for 1- max 2 months until we find a new place to settle. We need something as cheap as possible, but suitable for a family with small kid. I don't mind Int. City or something like that, but from owner as our cirrent problem is with the agent and I cant do this at this moment. Please if someone knows or has something, even a studio, for 1-2 months max I'll really really appreciate your help. TIA :)

I was reading that all kids until aged 11 have to be in some sort of carseat/booster, which I think is fantastic and about time. However my 7 year old is taller and heavier than all recomended height/weight limits for boosters on the market he is actually over the height and weight limit to sit in the front in the UK although he doesn't sit in the front. What do I do? The seats belts in the car fit him fine and are positioned correctly without a booster. I think you have no problem. The car seats and boosters are all about height and weight so if he is over there is no need of a booster seat. Actually if he is over in height and weight, and he is in a booster seat it might be dangerous for him in case of anything happening. I hope that never happens, but it is all about prevention, right :)

Every time I see something like that I feel like here in UAE we are trying to discover the hot water all over again.... These rules are all over the world and not from yesterday, so in 21st century this is new?! o, and some brands like MaxiCosi fit up to 3 seats very easily in all standard cars - standard coupe, not Mini... I've personally tried it in about 5 different brands and models - there is even little space left on the side of the doors :) (when we came the first time here with kids we used lots of rent-s-cars)

Hang in there :) Try showing him the washing process. It works for me. In the evening we remove the clothes and he is the one putting them in the washing machine, pressing the start button, etc. ... :) It is interesting and then he knows that this clothes are not available the next morning. Then he is the one deciding what to wear in the morning. I have everything in drawers and he can open himself and pick what he wants :) I know that he is 2, but you need to treat him like grown up and he will appreciate it. Don't give up, we all have those moments :) Just try to be consistent and explain. I know it will seam that you are talking to the wall, but later he will know what to do, so you will know that he was listening :) It works for my 2 year old. Hope it can work for yours too :) Good luck and just remember that everybody goes trough this and soon it will end :) Cheers

Don't discount "old" Suzy. We lived in three villas in Dubai and, while not a massive case study, the "old" one was FAR superior to the two brand new ones. Better build, more space and all of the construction hitches already sorted out. We did have a great LL though and if the particular Nakheel villas mentioned are indeed still Nakheel, not the world's best LL at the moment! I have to agree on that. My last LL was Nakheel and.... no money for nothing :( No A/C service, no repaint, no door handle replacement.... even after it was part of the contract - still nothing. and this was 7 months back. now they are in worse shape....

All this is very informative. Thanks for shearing ladies. My contract is on the name of the RE agency. the LL rents it to them and then they rent it to me :( I still paid commission, so also in this case they are taking money 2 times - once from the difference of the rent given to them and to me, and once from the commission. I did not know then and now it is too late, but now I am thinking of shifting and all this is very helpful as I need to prepare myself to avoid all the traps :) Thanks again

Hi, You can check what size is your bottle. on the bottle itself there is a number - 20.1 or something close to it is the large M one (don't ask how it can be L and M). the price for it is as stated by the ladies - 115-120. the LL bottle is 180-200, but this bottle do not fit in any of the gas bottle places in Dubai kitchens :) In Sharjah is cheaper, but not much and also the bottles do not have the regulator that is installed in the Dubai ones. This means that your bottle will give you more gas and you'll be able to cook faster, but than again your gas will finish faster too :) I prefer the Sharjah one as faster cooking is better for me :) he he... If you decide to use the Sharjah one and you live in Dubai, you'll have to go to Sharjah every time your bottle is for refill as Sharjah companies do not have the right to deliver in Dubai. aaa, also the Sharjah bottles do not use the click on regulators - I guess it's too modern for Sharjah :)

Hi, Checked wit our lawyer.... NO. the loan and credit card is given according to the personal income of the one applying. The spouse is responsible for it only if he/she signed as guarantor and presented security cheque as such to the bank. If not, then only the person having the loan/credit card is liable as per UAE law. Most bank if they can't collect the money from one will start calling the other one and they will tell you lots of things, but almost none will be correct. If you own a property of any kind together that all is different & more complicated. If that is the case you need to find yourself a lawyer to make sure that you will not pay for something that you do not need to. Unfortunately this info is not available in English :\: Hope this is helpful. Cheers :)

Hi, I got married here, but as wbusy has replied - a marriage is marriage and it can't be only in UAE. We wanted civil marriage and fortunately my embassy (we are also 2 different nationalities) was doing this. You can check with your embassies if that is possible as not all are doing it. You can do civil marriage and then later go for the ceremony back home :) Congrats :)

The degrees are from UK. I heard that there are agencies that do the whole process for a fee. Otherwise it is Foreign Office in Milton Keynes, UAE emabssy in London and then Ministry in Dubai. I have time to do it the slow way! Want to know if anyone has used this type of agancy. I have, but I paid 500 AED for this. I was in a hurry, but if you have the time I don't think you need to spend more. Everybody in the UAE Ministry were very nice and I finished in 15min. :)

I always laugh at the drivers who whip around other cars or make illegal turns to get further ahead only to get stuck at the same light as me. :) yes, but you know, when my son is in the car it is not that funny. I sometimes feel like going out of my car, pulling him out and slapping him so hard that he'll see stars..... I mean.... he wants to kill himself - be my guest, but don't take anyone with you.... some days it's like a virus..... until I reach work I'll go across some 5-6 or more lunatics that think that this is ok and they have the right on the road....

ok... :) 1. depending on the country that you have studied in, you need to attest them from the countries Ministry of education (some countries do not need to do that, so you need to check with the respective consulate/embassy) 2. the respective consulate/embassy needs to verify that all stamps, etc. from the Ministry of education/University are legit 3. you need to take it to DXB/AD, etc. Ministry of education for verification of the consulate/embassy stamps/signatures, etc. this is 500. It's a hassle, but in most cases can be done in one day or so :) All is about the stamps and signatures :) If you have studied in UK or US you will be done in 1 day :)

Hi, First, it is normal for you to rely on the information provided by the agent as this is why you are even talking with them, right.... so don't think that you are doing anything different than every body else, especially if you are not well versed with the law in this area. :) Second, we have an in-house lawyer in my office and according to him it is not illegal to collect finders fee - this is what you have paid. At the same time it is also according to the law to collect commission from the tenant. Sorry :( He advises for you to speak to the companies management and see if they are aware of the situation and the law. There is a chance that they are not, so you can make them sweat for some time :) Good luck..

Well, the fines are on the licence plate number and if the car is sold, only the owner of the plate is responsible for any fines - traffic or non-traffic. If the vehicle is purchased trough a bank, when you are taking it you should ask for a bank release letter to certify that all is paid - legally the car cannot be sold if not paid to the bank, but.... If it has been used to secure a loan is more difficult to track, but if it is in Dubai the police can help you on that as they have the traffic file for the vehicle and all this info is there. My advice is to go to a used cars dealer. Then they will be the ones doing all this checking :) If you do that just check with more than one as the prices are very different and still need to check the car mechanically as they will not tell you for some problems that may be there if not serious. Other plus of using a dealer is that they will give you warranty. Hope this helps. Cheers :)
