I've got my car with 4x4 motors and NBD. Was very fast with all extras and the bank was very ok as customer service, but then again I have never been late, so I can't say how it will be if you are :) not that you are planing to be, but you never know... 4x4 arranged all for me with the registration and the insurance too :) DH car was with Al Futtaim - same experience :)

Just wanted to bring up that you should maybe ask your doctor to check if you and especially the males who are going have G6PD Deficiency, it s an enzyme deficiency. With that deficiency you cannot take the anti-malarials as well as you cannot take many other medications (they cause jaundice and potentially hemolysis). My son has it. Research on www.g6pd.org and www.g6pddeficiency.org. better safe then sorry, it's a simple blood test to check your enzyme levels. wow, I didn't know that. No one checked me and our son that time when we were traveling :\:

sorry, I think it's for Dubai, but all clinics should have it. It's not that special. if you are taking the pills then you can simply buy them from any pharmacy. hope this helps :)

jonners, hi - we lived in kenya and were taking anti mal. pills we were taking them daily and weekly for 3 years we lived there, it didnt stop malaria, we all got it and i had it twice - but then we were living down in rift valley miles from anywhere. i cant recommend which ones to take as there are so many different ones - one family we knew was taking a new once a week pill and it caused really bad psychological problems with one of their sons, so research carefully before deciding on any. we didnt have any jabs or take any anti malaria stuff before we went last october as we went at such short notice. we were fine - fortunately! but i recommend taking or buying lots of mossie spray for any rooms u stay in and burn the mossie repellant jos sticks, use plug in repellants infact use as much as you can as often as you can in any rooms u have to stay in. use sprays for yr bodys too, all in all it might sound a pain to do all this - but going to kenya is so worth it, have a good time. sorry to hear for your troubles fairwater :( my GP gave me something that is for 2 weeks before you travel and we were there for 7 months... I was very fine. my DH is Kenyan, so naturally vaccinated :)

My six year old son thinks that 99% of the drivers on the road are w*nkers....wonder where he got that from! :) I do always say that when I leave this country I'm going to buy a cr*ppy old car for the last day and just ram into anyone who beeps me unnecessarily, cuts me off etc etc. Then I'm going to drive straight to the airport with my hand out the window giving them all a friendly one fingered parting gesture! :) Did that with great relish as our plane took off winging us out of Qatar for the last time!! Got some funny looks from fellow passengers mind you. :D good one. I'll put it in my bucket list :)

I live in Dubai and our syndrome is NDS – Nintendo Driver Syndrome (just like the PC game, but real life) I am afraid it is from the weather, as they have it in Kuwait too Lately there is even scarier one – TMS (texting moron syndrome), especially for the ones that are driving with their child in the car… I am afraid there is still nothing invented to help us or them, as ones you get it you are doomed…. he he, good luck to us all :) edited by mpp_jl on 16/06/2011

Dear Gardengirl, I have more than 10 years of HR and Admin experience and have seen this so many times. First, let me tell you that 40 is not the end of the road and not even the middle. Most people don’t know if what they are doing at 30 is what they want to be doing. Some people at 50 still are not sure. At the same time I understand that you are not confident as you have been away from the huff&puff of the work environment. I don’t think you need a life coach, and honestly here in UAE I am not sure if you will find one qualified, but instead you need a friend with some current experience on the market to just listen to you and help you to find the right road, the rest will come by itself. In my experience the main problem for mums returning to work is that they think their qualifications are not up to the current market standards and in most cases they are wrong. Being a mum and a housewife do not make you less qualified, the opposite – if you can handle your kids, your house and all the rest small things around…. you are the best, trust me :)

Thanks AnonDubai :) I can understand too why this is so important for the family and for the maid. Can you tell me the name of the agency, I can refer my friend to them. Just now I was thinking - is it better to use an agency or to sponsor a maid? I have heard so many stories of people that are taking a maid and paying all sorts of fees and then she leaves as she is not happy in UAE and away from her family. Do you know if this is common or an exception? my friend is not that rich :) Thanks The thread I bumped up for you gives details of the agency we used. We used an agency but we are also sponsoring our maid. The agency is the one who found the maid for us and supposedly gives you a three month guarantee. I think sponsoring is the only way but I know that it is very expensive. Unfortunately, that is a risk you have to take. I would think most maids can last a year. It is probably better for your friend to choose someone who has worked as a housemaid before in another country. Then she should be ok in terms of homesickness. Thanks :) Really very helpful :0) edited by mpp_jl on 14/06/2011

2 years back I lived in Sharjah, then I moved to Dubai and now I am considering moving back to Sharjah as my company wants to move me to different department and I'll have to come to Sharjah for work anyway. To be honest I found Sharjah apartments and villas to be bigger than the ones in Dubai - a plus for Sharjah :) But, the traffic in Sharjah is much more than in Dubai, plus if there is a road construction of some kind it will take 3-4 times longer to complete than in Dubai. It is confusing, but to be honest if you find a place that you like it doesn't matter if you live in Sharjah or Dubai as both places are very close to each other and in any case you will have to use your car to go whenever you want to, so....

Yes, the agency that I used classifies maids by religion. They're not likely to tell you, though, if your maid is Buddhist or Hindu! What if you request for one. I mean, their family is Muslim and they prefer the maid to be also Muslim. Makes everything much easier, right.

Did they check with the Canadian Consulate or embassy? Many countries allow their citizens to marry in the embassy or consulate. It is a civil marriage, only signing, no ceremony, no religion involved.

Another wind up or somebody who has something against Europeans; she mentioned it twice in her post. Who cares about the nationality ??? The owners could be Asians with European passports ? No ? There are lots of landscape companies in Dubai and one of the reasons why they decided to work with this company is that the owners and MDs are Europeans - my friend is from UK. As she explained - this means that their work will be on time and professional. They decided not to work with local companies as they have the reputation of being slow... sorry for that, but it's true. So no anti-European thoughts Speena... :)

International City is a free zone, so I guess it is cheaper for them to open a branch there. I shop at Spinneys there, they have some products at all times that are hard to find in other locations. Haven't seen the Pet Mania though. The place looks different now - the green areas are maintained and most buildings are repainted. Nakheel is managing the place again. Hi, There are many companies that offer serviced apartments in all areas in Dubai. You can check Better Homes and Asteco as they are big and may have more options for you. A simple Google search will give you all other info like average price, etc. - more or less they are accurate :)

Good morning, there are 2 superb ones in Jabel Ali NMC Clinic. But, when it comes to vaccinations, the government clinics are very good too and there it is free :) U can check it before u take your kid there. go to Dubai hospital main website and from there u can see which clinic is for your area as u don't have a choice - u can use only the one for ur area. good luck

One more tip: check the production date on the machine. They work with those flat batteries, so if the machine is produced more than a year back, the battery might not work and then you have to look for one :(

Is he still standing with no problem? If yes, than you have no problem and just need to give him some time. They know if their legs are strong enough to hold them. And walking requires stronger legs than standing, so…. My little destroyer just stood up one day and walked, no first steps, no trying, direct walking. If he is not standing though, than you need to consult your pediatrician as he may have pain. Don’t panic, not a problem, just some adjustments and more time for him to start walking :)

tell him that when it comes to him pushing an oversized melon out of his backside then he can choose who is there to support him, until then your uterus.. your choice! all jokes aside.. show him some birthing videos and see whether he can handle it, I only had my DH there but I made sure he knew what to expect, maybe your DH wants to keep it as a private special time.. the birth of your first child, just you and him being the first to see the baby.. maybe he'll agree to it if your Mum leaves for the final act? It could be a long drag and he may appreciate there being someone else around to take the pressure off. Exactly my point :)

The testing depends on the glucose levels. If you have big difference from one test to another that means you need to test more often, if not – than ones a week or every 10 days or more will be more than enough. Your glucose changes from what you eat, drink and how much you exercise. If your test shows too high, that might be from something you ate or drank. Best time to test is morning before breakfast, so you have so called fasting result – the accurate one :) I use GlucoDoctor. Never had a problem finding the strips and with the needles you have more choice. Tip: try and use the one that are less mm – less pain :) You can find it most pharmacies. I got mine in Life pharmacy on Jumeirah Road, but they are available in almost any of the bigger pharmacies, especially the mall ones. Make sure that the box is sealed – warrantee wise :) edited by mpp_jl on 02/06/2011

Different brands cost different. The strips are around 100 per box, the needles are around 120 per box, the machine can be from 200 to 700, but they all do about the same job. You can take second hand machine and just buy the strips and needles, that will cost you less. From time to time there are promotions, but on the older models and if you go for one later you might not find the strips for your machine as they work only with specific brands. If you have a life pharmacy around your home or work, they do the test for free, but then you are bound to their working times.

I am not sure if you can, as men are not even close to understanding what childbirth is. It is not only in the movies, men usually faint during the procedure or just leave the room as they cannot take it anymore. I think having your mom next to you is a good thing, although I have to say that you will not be able to pay attention to her and she will not be able to help you in any way. At the end of the day your doctor is the one that you will need and the only person you need to be focused on. When I think of it, having your mom there is good idea – she can take care of your husband :) Sorry, not a joke really. 1 in 50 men are ok in that room during that time. I think the reason is that they never know how difficult that is. My husband waited outside. I wanted it like that, less stress for me – just for the baby, no husband stress :) There are videos on childbirth. Not nice, but accurate. It may scare your husband enough to make him change his mind :) Sorry, trying to be just very positive about it. Have seen many future dads literally running away from that room. Use to work in hospital. Good luck :)

I would say both, but really depends on the child just watch and see the reaction. Why don't you give up for now and try in 2 months time or 6 months. Avoids all the stress and pressure. I think he is ready as he is always complaining after he makes the N2 especially, wants to be changed immediately. I figured he needs just a little push, but maybe you are right. Maybe just keep it there for him, he knows that it is there and if he wants – good, if not – we’ll try after some time again :)
