I am not a repton parent - but I think if you search on here you will find plenty of reasons....mostly around school resources, unfinished projects, poor communication with parents and broken promises.

Do you know what servicing them is like here? Our current fridge has an ongoing fault...and everytime they take it away it is for a week and a half...to be honest it is driving us crazy! I think the suppliers/servicing is incompetant.......we are wondering if we are better just to cut our loses

We did not Circumcise DS - he was born in NZ, DH is not circumcised either...to give you an idea of where the Western world has moved too (with exception of the states)...it is actually now hard to find a Dr willing to circumcise a Newborn boy in NZ - as there are no medical grounds for it. Its not even a question that is asked. With regards to Hygiene...boy oh boy there have been some interesting comments. But here's my 2 cents worth. the foreskin is not detached until they are about 4-5 years old....so it just takes care of itself, up until then. Then your little boy can take over responsibility for cleaning it. DS often jumps into the shower with DH, and as part of the OK make sure you get the shampoo all over you head..rub it in, rinse it out, clean here there and everywhere, Dh also makes sure he knows to pull back his foreskin and clean under it. It is no big deal. In the USA Boys tend to be circumcised...when we lived there DS was the odd one out, and many mothers had their DS circumcised so "they fitted in in the locker room" and "looked the same as their dads"...I can understand it too a point, but at the end of the day you don't have a religous reason for it, why do it?

I like to think of it as the natural progression of montessori. Play based learning which evolves into activity based and project based learning. I would not be surprised if it was the leading form of education across the world in the future. I've always been a fan of this style of learning. Unfortunatley though, the diploma is not accepted across universities as readilly as graduating from the British system... So if you are thinking of a pathway to uni, this is something that parents have to factor in. All it means in practice is that you have to apply to uni for admission 'ad eundum statum' as with any other non-British qualification, which is no big deal, just another form to fill in. The IB diploma is viewed as being at least equivalent to British GCSE ones and some courses prefer it because of the breadth of subjects studied and the extended essay, 150 hours community service and theory of knowledge components. I don't think china is a good example do you? They don't like it because it encourages people to question the world around them, and to think for themselves....not what china wants at all. In fact is it china that has labelled in a cult? Yes, each university has its own entrance requirements and they choose how to recognise the diploma. However, unfortunatley, some universities and even countries like China do not recognise the IB diploma. This is where parents need to do research (and the kids of course)... For example, if your child shows an apptitude in science, it would be good to contact the top universities who specialise in this field and ask them which system they desire more... I love the methodology of the IB system, I think it is more realistic and practical, requiring the students to have a thirst for knowledge. This is essential to their lives. However, until the IB system is embraced as it no doubt will be, I think it is important to research how universities value the IB system (if , of course you are aiming at this pathway)

nope you don't need to use one...doesn't mean you shouldn't though...we moved there when DS was 15 months, and ended up using taxi's alot without a car seat, though we would put the safety belt around him The other thing is a sit'n'stroll...not the best stroller, but covers both things - or use a front pack and put the safety belt just around you (baby shouldn't be b/w you and safety belt)

exotoc/ wild animals escaping are nothing new. I also live in jumeriah and remember when a cheetah escaped about 3 years ago. They are usally caught. 2 years ago on the Palm a monkey came after me when I was walking on the beach. I was very frightened because I was 5 months pregnant and the animal was flashing me his teeth. We called the police and the houseboy insisted he was just being friendly. Isn't it a sign of agression when monkeys show their teeth? Might have had a lucky escape! Absolutely...shows how much the people looking after these animals know about them....

An acquaintence told me recently that her maid had just been home for her holiday and when she came to return, the phillipina government would not let her return to Dubai, until she had completed "training" at a cost.....anybody heard of this, or had experience of this? My maid is about to go on holiday and would really like to avoid paying 3500AED, for someone to train her in a job, she has been doing very well already for 2 years......

Ok ...well, that is a hard one, because the straight answer is class sizes and resources... I never looked at schools that charged $15 k, but I am guessing ones like (is it) Winchester? There class sizes are very large, so if you compared that with say one that has around 24 ( or gems Wellington primary, where class sizes are 16,but fees are are around $40k) then yes it does make a difference. Where I am not so sure about the fee diff, is the schools charging up to $50 or 60k ...ESP with schools like rep ton, where people complain about not enough resources (but that is more later years) and growing class sizes... So to answer your question, I actually think 30k is reasonable for foundation, and would (and do)pay it. Think the education is going to be better than a school charging $14k, but don't think $50-60k is going to make a difference over $30k school edited by Mrs Laughan on 07/04/2011

Hiccup, that's a bit of a silly question isn't it? Yes some people do get school fees paid as part of package... But many don't. If you have school age children, they have to be educated, so you have to pay... And the prices at a great many schools here are not extortionate.... Yes they seem expensive if you are from a country that provides free education, but it's not free is it really? Not when your paying 40-50% tax Look at NYC school fees and then tell me that the fees here are extortionate...... Err ... I meant the schools that charge 30000 and up for foundation / kg. Obviously there are many schools that are cheaper. But I keep hearing this statement "you get what you pay for"?[/quote The school we were planning on sending our son to in NYC started at $36000usd for foundation, it was not the cheapest ( that would have been around $30,000usd) , but by far not the most expensve..... The private school we would send our son to in NZ starts at $17,000NZD plus, pus, plus......so 30,0000aed is not extortionate

I like what wholefoods do in the states - give you rebate for each bag you bring, I think it was 10c per bag , so on a big shop it could add up to a dollar. Encourages people to take bags, but doesn't **** people off who don't

SCP _ if they are still feeding from their mother they must stay with her...they are not ready to be weaned... THE MAID - buy her a trash can for outside - or a bucket with a lid....solves the problem of them tearing her trash bags....even without the resident mother cat that you have acquired there are so many cats in Dubai that this would still be a problem...and if their are no cats, chances are the rats will get into her trash... to be honest prefer to have cats than rats. The Maids son, he may be allergic to cats, but I presume you are not asking her to get her son to pet them? No, I thought not...she is being a PRIMADONNA, if her DS skin was so sensitive that he would have a reaction walking into garden where a cat lives, he would have to live in a bubble in dubai...there are cats everywhere. Honestly she is pulling your chain, she doesn't like the cats (fair enough) but she is praying on your naivety to get you to get rid of them...and we know you are trying...have you tried feline friends? But seriously tell her to toughen up, as long as you don't feed them, they will move on pretty quickly in my experience....
