I think I'd miss my husband if I were away too long, although he'd probably be glad of the peace and quiet! I suppose this means I'll finally be able to watch Game of Thrones and see what all the hype is about.

Laudree or Godiva at The Beach on JBR, both grown up places for tea and cake with beach views. You could walk along to the beach from that end to the beginning of the beach mall (towards Hilton) and take in the entirety of the new development. How about Ripe Market in the evening?

Most caterers seem to have a minimum order requirement for 20 people, which is far too much, so looks like I'll be making canapes myself. Any suggestions for easy veggie canapes? Had a quick google and most things seem to be cheese based (only so much cheese a girl can eat!) or Indian (we're eating Indian food in the evening so don't want to repeat flavours/foods). TIA

So the people on the tram are annoyed with the pace, and the road users are struck waiting at intersections for the giant grey worm that has taken the marina hostage! Has anyone else noticed that they stop the WHOLE intersection, rather than allowing some lanes to continue flowing while the tram goes by (where safe to do so obviously!)? Oh the joys of the tram!! As you say Stix, why oh why do they have to hold up every lane of traffic while the tram crosses the road. We live in JBR at the Sheraton end and whilst going out isn't too bad, coming home can be horrendous. Sometimes it can take thirty minutes from the start of queuing on the blue bridge to actually getting into the Amwaj car park. I only take this route maybe twice a week but my husband does it five nights a week. It is so frustrating. It was said that the introduction of the tram would help ease congestion in the Marina. It has had the opposite effect!! Goodness only knows what the RTA are going to do about it, if anything! We, too, live at the Sheraton end and have been suffering in the evenings. We usually jump out of cabs near the Jewels and walk home if possible, but sometimes it takes forever just to get to that point!

Mint Leaf of London, a grown up kinda brunch. Ah, I love going to Mint Leaf in the evenings, but it's often pretty dead (I truly hope it doesn't close, it's delicious and I love sitting at the bar), which is a shame. I've been tempted by the brunch, but worried the place might be quite empty and lacking atmosphere (judging by the evenings). How did you find it in that regard? I find it gets busier in the evenings from 9pm. The brunch is quite steady.

Benefit Mascara's are good, try 'They're real' or 'Roller Lash'. I've been using both of these and they're great - Roller Lash layered with They're Real give a great 'false lash' effect. edited by mrs13b on 13/04/2015

All of that is mostly North Indian. You should try a masala dosa - it's like a very thin, crispy pancake with a potato filling, comes with a curry sauce called sambar (it's a traditional South Indian dish, check out Aryaas in Karama) Maharaja Bhog in Karama is a Gujurati style veg thali place, they change the menu daily and it's always yummy. Unlimited food served to your table - like a seated buffet! Zafran in Marina Mall has some nice veggie starter dishes.

Paneer is a staple for vegetarian Indians, you can add it to most things: saag paneer (spinach), paneer burji (like scrambled egg, lively with diced onions and peppers), paneer tikka masala (with onions, peppers and tomato) Dal (lentils) is always great - tarka dal (yellow split lentils) is light, like a soup, dal makhni (black lentils with a few kidney beans) is rich and creamy. Aloo (potatoes) are added in some dishes (like mixed veg curries) or perfect on their own cooked with cumin seeds, garam masala and turmeric India Palace, Green Chillies and Mint Leaf of London have some great veg dishes :)

Fairmont the Palm, Hilton or Sheraton on JBR - all on the beach that cater outside (I've seen live cooking stations outside for events at the Fairmont)

Seagrill on 25 at Fairmont the Palm has lovely views. They have outdoor seats on the terrace but I think they also set up tables on the beach for special occasions. Great menu.

I live in the area and I can tell you it's the Tram. I've spent ages watching it and the light sequence is incorrect. Traffic on both sides of the tram doesn't flow at the same time. It should. They also block ALL traffic when the tram is passing by, when some lanes could continue to operate. If the RTA could address this, the problems would go away. I agree - so poorly planned. I wonder why they haven't revisited the project to see what impact it's had on traffic in the area?

It's a nightmare. I came home last night around 1am and told the cabbie to take exit 29 on SZR for JBR but she insisted it would only take 10mins to drive down the Walk... 30 mins later she conceeded defeat. If you can park elsewhere and walk/take the tram, I'd recommend that.

As Cowboy said - better to buy one here (unless your company is paying for the shipping, in which case get it sent over and save yourself the expense).

What did you decide to do? I was at The Beach on JBR earlier and it's actually quite nice out. If you go to the galleries in Al Quoz, Tom & Serg is a great place to take a break for lunch/coffee & cake.

I am sure someone will come on with a definite answer for you but I wouldn't have thought your son would be able to take lessons on his provisional licence. The reason being that even if you have a full UK licence you are not allowed to drive on it in the UK if you are not residing in the UK, so I should think a provisional would be the same... sorry! :( So if a British expat with a full UK driving licence went back to the UK, what would they need to do to be eligible to drive?

It sounds like an exciting opportunity, and as you plan to move for only a limited time due to previous commitments, I'd look upon it as an adventure and dive right in. The package your husband has been offered sounds good, but you should always try to negotiate (will they add DEWA/chiller fees or anything similar to the package? Will the company pay for shipping/relocation fees each way? Could take a load off your own finances). Best of luck.

It definitely feels warmer, I wasn't expecting it to get like this til the end of March at least. We seem to be on the cusp of a very long summer (funny, as I left the UK which seems to be struggling with the longest winter ever!).

I felt the same after the first few weeks here, after the novelty of the move begins to wear off. I've only been here for three months now, and I think now that 'real life' is kicking in I'm beginning to feel more settled. I do miss my friends especially - we used to meet often for lunch/after work drinks etc. It feels harder to meet/click with people out here. The few people I have met and tried to keep in touch with have ended up leaving Dubai to go back home for various reasons!

Hi Mrs12b we pay about AED350 and get internet, phone line and basic TV. Not sure if they still do this package. The internet is always slower than they say. You can just go to the shop and they will present to you all the packages. You fill out a form and they will then send someone out to install it, usually within a couple of days. Just check that Du works in your area as there are some areas where it is Etisalat only. I have the same package as you and the internet speed is supposed to be 16MB but in reality is sooo much slower. I think you can only have one or the other depending on where you live If you want to stream or download programs it is slow with 16MB I don't mind slower downloads as I can leave the laptop on overnight to do that, but it could get annoying as I do stream quite a bit. Thanks for the views, all.
