I'm home alone tonight as mr13b is out for dinner with friends - will use the time wisely to indulge in a little manicure (why does nail polish seem so much more expensive each time I go shopping!?) and a good book.

Do you work or will you be at home for the duration? I always assume such visits are easier if you can use work as an excuse and leave the visitor to their own devices during the day. I have no idea what I'll do when my in-laws come to visit - MiL is not very mobile and FiL is a fussy eater. I'm not working yet so it will be down to me to keep them entertained when they visit.

Thank you, all. We did some viewings at some rentals a couple of days ago - Cayan was so disappointing on the inside. The best thing about it was the amount of storage really. Most of the bedrooms were too small, and the better apts/duplexes were overpriced. But the good news is that we have found somewhere we love and have made an offer - fingers crossed, we could be in our new home in a matter of weeks!

Grand Stores are the only Nikon authorised service centres in the UAE - if you hand it in anywhere else for maintenance/service/repairs it will void the warranty.

It rarely goes away completely and you really should see a dermatologist/doctor who can properly assess your needs. Depending on where it is and how bad, they can recommend the right kind of steroid cream. My husband suffered from eczema and developed psoriasis, at which point he was prescribed stronger creams and ointments than previously used. He also finds Cetraben emollient very soothing when it gets itchy. I wish you the best, I know how terrible such skin conditions can be.

I'm not an Apple fan but I do love my Mac, and adapted to it quickly. As a photographer it suits my needs, and I only had to download Photoshop etc, but if you use Microsoft Word/Excel/etc you will have to purchase those programs separately (unless you use Google Drive) so do remember to budget that in too!

Little Bangkok in Media City delivers to the Palm. We tried this branch. DO NOT be fooled by the rip off weekend "promotion" - they will find any excuse to charge you extra. It's dishonesty on their part. We shared a starter and ordered a main each and one rice between the two of us. We had small amounts left of each main which the waitress claimed if we could not finish we would have to pay the a la carte price for the entire meal PLUS the AED99 promotion EACH. While I can understand the restaurant not wanting to lose money (or waste food by gluttonous over ordering), what they are saying is ridiculous. At one point the waitress said "if you can finish your mains I can give you the promotion price" after we'd had our teas and coffees. At the same time, they have a no doggy bag rule, which if you think about it means they ate promoting waste! We flat refused to pay the promotion and simply paid the full a la carte prices. So, for AED44 (roughly $12) they have completely alienated new customers as we will never go back. A real shame, as the food was pretty good. I'm not sure they'll care one bit of these are the sorts of staff and policies they put in place.

Mrs13b - if you know which building you want then just go into the building speak to security and find out who the building management is. Also ask them if they know which apartments are available, or becoming available. If the building is fully occupied (I have no idea, never heard of cayan tower) give the security guard a hundred dhs to keep you updated on anyone vacating the property. Also a quick google would have given you this details: Cayan Homes Real Estate Broker LLC Cayan Tower-Dubai Marina Ground Floor Tel: +971 4 3699910 Fax: +971 4 3605112 P.O.Box 643731, Dubai, UAE I think Cayan tower is the twisty one that was oringially called Infiniti That's the one! My husband and I called it "the twisty building" for ages before we found out the real name. Thanks again for the help, have spotted a few apts listed on propertyfinder.ae and will be booking viewings asap =)

I much prefer it the way it is now - every other website and forum has similar layout as it's easier to read a thread and follow replies top to bottom. I always found it a bit jarring on EW as it seems backwards!

Alismum- I haven't been down to that area for a couple of weeks. Wonder if the market will be open stalls, like they used to have on the corner near Boutique 1/Murjan, or the area by the 6 Emaar towers on Marina Walk? That would be lovely, especially as The Walk seems to be a bit of a no-go at the moment, with all the beautifying works going on along the pavements

Well the first things to do - is get yourselves LOADS of passport photo's as you will need that for everything! and passport copies, and ID copies.... and a heap of patience.... Luckily I discovered this forum a couple of months before we moved, so we came prepared! Despite being a photographer myself and knowing how best to get a flattering shot, I still look so ROUGH in the 30-odd passport pics I brought with me!

At Costa, next to Spinneys...looking opposite Cayan Tower... I asked the staff & they inform me it's the only Costa at marina... it is now 10.22am & I haven't seen Sarah or others, so I will go. My guess is I'm at the wrong Costa. :-) try again...next week... Cheers. In Delphine Tower, Marina Wharf side? I think you should be the other side of Marina Mall, opposite side of Cayan Tower edited by mrs13b on 03/11/2014

I've mostly been watching downloaded stuff on my laptop and looking for somewhere to live! Would you ladies be up for meeting at the coffee morning next Monday? This thread has given me a huge push - towards the nearest cinema screen. What show/ time would you ladies recommend, to avoid the possibility of any lurkers/psychos/creepy guys? I ask because, if you are completely alone, and there is even one nutter around, thats too many, isnt it! Has anyone ever encountered a problem, and any advise if something wierd happens? We should make a blind date, all the EW ladies, and turn up at the cinema at the appointed time. But no intros/ numbers/ chatting etc just watch the movie 'together' and disperse afterwards - can discuss the movie on here later, lol. That's a lovely idea; us be up for that! I used to go to the theatre a lot on my own in London, especially the afternoon matinees. I was lazy about the cinema though, and would usually download and watch at home.

I've found it better at the Gold & Diamond Park. I have bought a few pieces from Cara and always been happy with the price and quality, as have others I have referred there. The guy who owns Cara actually owns a few of the shops in GDP, so worth asking them about their other stores too and then checking out the competitors.

Yes! https://www.itp.net/tickets/ Thanks, Tattie. Just holding off booking as we may end up flying back to the UK for a game there (which is looking increasingly unlikely considering the weather forecast for the UK is doom and gloom this winter!), but it looks like there is still plenty of availability.

http://www.accessoreezbazaar.co.uk/ - the owner is a lovely lady who has some great suppliers (a lot of her stock is v similar to what you'd find at Topshop/ASOS etc, but at a fraction of the price). I'm sure she'd happily ship to the UAE - just drop her an email. I've bought some great statement necklaces from her in the past.

Dubai Shopping Festival has been announced and it will be from Jan 1 till Feb 1 :) Can't wait!!! :) Have you been to DSF before? Is it really worth holding out for DSF for buying big ticket items? We'll need a TV, and probably some furniture too (I'm assuming we'll be renting an unfurnished apt) - if the discounts are decent then we can hold off buying a lot of that stuff. (Apologies for hijacking your thread, confused1975)

*RTA ferry cruise from Dubai Marina (past the Palm, see Burj al Arab, Atlantis etc) *Abra is a good shout, I think it's 150Dhs for a 1 hour private cruise. You can spend half a day doing that and wondering around the various souks *Souk al Bahar for lunch/dinner with a view of the fountains, maybe followed by a fountain lake ride! I've started making a list of things to do as a lot of people have threatened to visit once we're settled! Hope to add to the list from this thread ;)

London loves kids - most restaurants are child friendly. Chains inc. Pizza Express, Five Guys, GBK, Ping Pong, Giraffe, etc etc. Given her age, your daughter might enjoy Lego Land, which is a lot closer than Peppa P*g Park. Avoid black cabs if you can, ask your hotel for a few mini cab numbers and book them when required - a LOT cheaper. Use the tube where you can - you daughter can travel for free, and trips will be cheaper for you if you invest in an Oyster card (when you leave, you can return the card at any tuvbe station and get a refund on the deposit you paid, which is £3 or £5, if I recall correctly). If you didn't enjoy Singapore Zoo then I'm not sure that London Zoo will be your cup of tea (personally I love it and go once a year with nieces & nephews who are old enough to enjoy feeding times and animal talks/performances - the butterfly enclosure is lush!). London malls don't compare to the ones in Dubai, obviously, but Westfield London and Westfield Stratford are two very popular ones. Both easily accessible by tube. There might be something going on at South Bank, google and have a look. Otherwise it's a lovely place to walk and take in the sights, and maybe have a ride on the London Eye if you're ok with heights! Lots of places to have lunch too, including the Real Food Market on Fri/Sat/Sun (the Cypriot olives are divine). Avoid the aquarium - it's overpriced and overrated. Amble around Covent Garden if you get a chance, check out the cute shops, market and entertainers, then go to the London Transport Museum and play on trains, tubes carriages and more - very child friendly. As with most museums, it's free for children. I think this one is better suited for toddlers than the Science/Natural History museums. Have a great time!

Yes, we're watching via satellite. It must have something to do with the security between the EPL and BeIN sports, as the EPL are currently testing security between them (according to Richard Keys on Twitter) before releasing all matches as you mentioned knowing there is currently a dispute. Guessing you are trying to watch within the UAE and not via online from abroad? Thanks for the update, that's really helpful.

Hi, husband says to call BeIN sports because there is no reason why you shouldn't get the early game plus the main 3 o'clock game and the late game. You should get the same content as what's on the main BeIN sports package and the Man United vs Swansea match is currently on ours through it. That's usually the case (and certainly was last season), but we've got a holding page online, which suggests it's an online issue only - are you watching via satellite?

+1 for GPP - I did it a few years ago before I started my photography business and it was good fun. They also sell some gear at a small discount, so useful if you wanted any bit like straps, tripods etc. If you're into landscapes and the like, I can thoroughly recommend signing up to a course with David Nightingale during GPP.
