It must be the weather! WE are expecting a delivery from a well known sports shop. Got a call on Sunday to say we will deliver tomorrow between 3 and 5. AS no one is in until 4, I asked that they deliver after 4. No problem, says the warehouse. We will deliver after 5. OK? Yes that's great. So yesterday at 10:00 a.m. my DH gets a call saying 'We are almost at your house' . No says DH. Delivery after 5, remember. Oh says the driver. In that case no delivery today. I'll call you tomorrow. Aggghhhhhhh !!!!!!

thank you ladies. I called their HO, as I work in Jebel Ali anyway, and they said that it would be in the shops in a couple of days. That was 2 weeks ago!! Still no tea :( Amy Aus82 - really appreciate you checking. C4 told me yesterday that they stock the whole range. When I said no you don't as you don't have the blackcurrant tea, do you know what he said. Him - Ah yes, we used to have that one, but it wasn't popular. Me - but it sold out in days. Him - yes and that's why we didn't get any more. ?? Is it just me or is that really stupid?!

Not really. This isn't the first tanker war Iran has attempted. It wasn't successful last time, and it won't be this time. The Straits are too important - to everyone, including Iran - for the West and the East to allow it to be blockaded. So far I have lived safely in Dubai through the original tanker war, the iran/Iraq war, 2 Gulf Wars and the Iraqi conflict. I'm not making plans to leave just yet.

I saw one last week upstairs in the Union Coop on Al Wasl Road, opposite Safa Park. I can't remember exactly how much it was but I do recall thinking that it wasn't horrendously expensive. It was a about a metre high. Thanks Cornish Pixie. Went to the Co Op on the way home and bought the fridge. They deliver on Tuesday :) It was AED600 cheaper than I had peviously seen in C4/Geant etc.!

Thank you Ladies. I always forget that Union Co-op has electricals upstairs. Mind you, I admit I still wouldn't have thought of there for a wine fridge!! Guess it could also be a Pepsi fridge ??? C4 and Geant have sold out, and I never get to either Spinneys, but will try now that I know they have fridges. As for the wine lasting long enough to actually have it's own fridge - it's more to do with having enough cold bottles at the end of a long and stressful day :)

Do you use any special shampoo on your hair after straightening? If so, which ?? My hairdresser said that shampoo should not have sodium chloride in it as it ruins the hair, but it seems that EVERY shampoo here has it in. Do I really have to buy it in UK and bring it here?

There's no such thing as a gold Lab, there are black Labs, chocolate Labs (nearly all of them named Hershey in my experience) and yellow Labs. [b'>My chocolate lab is called Lily, and is one of a litter of 10. None of them are called Hershey, although there are a couple of Charlies (Charley Brown from Peanuts I guess). There was a golden Lab in the petshop near Safestway a couple of weeks ago. Don't know if he is still there though.[/b'> edited by mrsg on 27/11/2011

My late august DD is now an adult. She was the youngest in her class at school, and, to be honest, the first few months were a struggle as she was so much younger and therefore less mature, than her peers. However, once settled, she sailed through primary school. Noticed the difference again mid way through Secondary . The really big difference was at university. She was so much younger (a couple of her friends from uni are 2+ years older) than everyone else. She left Dubai at only just 18, and went off to uni in what was essentially a foreign country even though it was her native one. That was a lot to cope with - for both of us. However, once settled in her home country she grew up PDQ. I have to admit that , even though she enjoyed her school days and successfully gained her degree, given the choice again - I would hold her back a year .

It wasn't the typing centre. They typed my name as per my visa and passport. It was the ID centre that issued the card with my DH name added. I went back to them and they said that every wife should have her DH name on the ID! Sadly it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the powers that be really had decided to add DH name to every card.

As this is already a post on ID cards (cos I didn't want to start a new one) , what is your name on your ID card? I ask because mine also has my DH first name added. So it is 'Joan Smith John'. My visa says Joan Smith W/O John Smith. The ID centre said every wife ID card they issue will include her DH name. Really ??!!

I've switched off Sky News because of their coverage. Cheap tv, and honestly, who really cares. MJ was without doubt a musical genius, but he was also a rather sad individual who just didn't know how to cope with the life he had made for himself.

If she is on a visit visa, she has to leave the country. Her new sponsor should apply for a visa as usual. Do not declare the girl as being in the country when you apply for the entry permit. This is not illegal, as she will be leaving the country on her old visa and entering on the new one. Once the new entry permit is ready, book the girl on a return trip to kish island. She can go straight there and straight back again BUT make sure she has the new entry permit with her. Book on the early flight - about 8 a.m., and back on the early afternoon flight. No need to stay overnight on kish. As she leaves Dubai her old visit visa is cancelled in the system. She comes back in on her new entry permit, which must be stamped with the arrival date on entry. Then she has all of the usual visa proceedures to go through (medical etc). You can no longer pay to transfer a visit visa into an employment visa. You have to leave the country and come back in.

My son climbs here (not at either of the venues mentioned), and has done for a number of years without accident. When anyone takes part in an adventure sport they have to take some responsibilty for their own safety! To say no one said they shouldn't take off their safety line is stupid! However, rumour is that the other accident was not the fault of the climber involved. Take your child climbing, but ask lots of questions, and make sure you pull any safety lines to check that they are properly tied to you etc. In a litigious society like Dubai, no one can say what happened until it becomes official - but checking any knots etc that you are using to support yourself whilst climbing is always a sensible thing to do.

He doesn't hibernate as it stays too warm here, but he does have a huge burrow that he lives in! It disappears down into the sand for what seems like miles. Luckily she has a huge garden that can accomodate him, but I reckon she could use his burrow as a nuclear shelter!!

Please don't use SALUT if you have any pets as it will kill them! A friend of mine has a problem with grubs, and can read the arabic on Salut, so knows not to buy it. Apparently it also has a picture of cows and chickens on it with a big cross - just in case you don't read the instructions! Where did you buy PROVADO? Garden centre says it doesn't sell it:(

I agree - it's the constant repeats , and wall to wall cookery programmes that annoy me! Watching the film Nativity in December was amusing, but still having it on in June.....:( I have just scanned through the channels and there isn"t one film on at the moment that is new! Comedy series are way too old and out of date. Sport - yeah right, what sport. And the HD channels. What a waste. We have decided to cancel OSN, as we are watching more and more MBC, or downloads/DVD's. I will keep my Firstnet package at AED 70 a month so I will still get SKYnews and Granada, but everything else is going, going.....GONE!

I wait until she kills the grass, then I cover the patch with new potting compost. The grass grows back fairly quickly, but I just wondered if there was anything I could add to my watering system to help. She has free reign on the garden, and has access to the outside all the time, so catching her peeing, and washing the grass down, isn't easy. nadadanada - my friend has brown patches on her lawn, and the grass is gradually dying all over, but she has no pets. I passed on your comment and she says she has seen big black bugs flying over her 'pitiful'lawn. What did you put on yours, and where did you buy it from?

If you are overseas on their 16th - no NI number is issued. When my girls returned to the UK we had so much trouble getting them their numbers. They had to be interviewed before their requests were considered. in fact, it would have been easier for them if they were immigrants just entering the UK rather than children of expats returning home. My elder child was given her NI number, and it was only when she changed jobs that we discovered she has been allocated an overseas student number - not a proper NI number at all.!! My younger child only got her number because we involved our local MP! iT'S NOT EASY. It seems that the powers that be assume some sort of fiddle is going on if your child misses the 16th birthday allocation, and make it really difficult to get one issued at a later date. As both children have full Brit passports, and at one time or another I have claimed family allowance for each of them, getting that elusive number should have been easy. It wasn't. Start early if you are applying for one now. Oh, and they won't issue one to your child unless said child is resident in the UK. And they won't issue one purely for use in University Student Loan applications either.

My son also had night terrors. He is now a well adjusted teensger, so try not to worry too much. They grow out of it and there is nothing you can do to speed that up. Make sure that there is nothing he can hurt himself on - nothing to fall over - and just do what you are doing now. They really don't remember it in the morning - it's just us with the feeling of absolute helplessness!!

Don't panic! I had mine and 2 of the kids visas expire by over 3 months and was dizzy at the thought of the penalty payment. However, when I went to immigration the guys were great. As it wasn't the first residence visa we had had for any of us, and as my DH visa was valid for the full time anyway, they charged a small admin fee , plus the renewal, and did it all very quickly. (well, as quickly as they could bearing in mind I had to have a visa medical). Be honest with them. They can be surprisingly helpful :)

Yes it is legal. You are not allowed to dig new wells now, but can keep old ones. Mine is years old, but have noticed recently that my shrubs are not looking as good as they used to. I live in a sweet water area, with lots of nurseries around me, so didn't really think it was the well, but wondered how to go about testing the water anyway.

I'm the gardener - and it doesn't taste salty, but it isn't doing much for the plants either! I just wondered if anyone tested their water for acid/alkali, or added anything? We pump ours into a big tank, so adding fertilisers would be easy. Just don't know what to add to make it better for my poor old trees/hibiscus etc.

The English College is collecting baby food/items (mainly nappies I think) for an orphanage in Africa. They have a group of students going there next month to help out, so are collecting for them. Not too sure if they are asking for unopened packs of nappies plus cash so that they can buy formula once there, or if they are taking everything with them. Why not give them a call.
