I don't know what I was thinking ! Hubby looked at me like I have ten heads when I said I was considering it, he said no way absolutely not ! We might consider an additional week or two at her own expense but no advances of holiday or holiday salary.

We have 20m of the mesh fence with a safety gate which has a double lock and is self locking, which we are about to remove in the next week or two. We had it installed new 2 years ago from this company http://www.poolfence.eu.com/page1.aspx. Let me know if you are interested, leave your email address and I will drop you a email with the details.

Normally, it is one full month, and I guess that is preferable if they have kids at home. But I would imagine it is flexible if you and she can agree to a split month, she may even prefer to get home 2x per year instead of 1x. It does mean you will have the cost of 2 flights instead of one.

Oh no, I also had dreadful experience there, sorry I was too late to warn you! Also my DD. with curly hair, had her hair hacked. As you say, no point in discussing it with them, it's like talking to a wall. No one has any authority and the hairdressers can be diva's and get on the defensive.

Yes, it could be an urban myth, or maybe those are salaries people remember from years ago. When we arrived I did find someone with her own visa, she was looking for around 2,200 per month, I almost hired her as I thought a visa was a visa, and didn't realise it was illegal. My husband's PRO explained it was 'technically' illegal but that 'everyone does it, and who's to know', but we decided not to risk it as DH was just taking up a new position and we didn't want any potential hassle to crop up. I do know quite a few people who employ on this basis when their regular maids go home on vacation though or while they are waiting for their new hire to arrive in the country. BTW, apparently hotels, restaurants and factories hire people on own visas during peak and seasonal periods.

When I was looking for someone full-time live-in on a temporary basis when we first arrived here, the price I was quoted was around AED7,000 per month. I do remember the likes of Howdra and other agencies quoting around 3k per month, but it was for a 12 month commitment and I think there was a 5k downpayment if my memory serves me correctly. Can you not get the details from those people who know of hiring a fultime temporary maid for AED2k per month (and share the name with us please ... it's a question that is often is asked here)

My understanding of the annual contract is that she is entitled to 4 weeks vacation for working 12 months. If you work it out, she 'earns' 2.5 days of vacation for every month she works for you. So at the end 12 months she gets her 1 month paid vacation, if she works 11 months she gets 1 month less the 2.5 days she would have earned for working that month. In my opinion, she is entitled to 1 month holiday pay if she works the full 12 months without taking vacation ......... plus a one way flight home if you are cancelling her visa and not transferring it. That's how I see it, but maybe others have a different perspective to mine ...

Amala, at Sabeel Saray on the Palm is amazing. You can order whatever you want and as much as you want, from the menu for a set price of about AED280. So if you like something, you can re-order it, it's a great concept and the food never disappoints.

I have always gone to Amrit in Satwa. They are good quality and have a huge choice of fabric, they are much less expensive than the likes of Seedar, but I would imagine they would be a lot more expensive than Dragon mart.

The UAE contract is a net salary. If the French requirement says a gross rate, than you probably need to calculate the monthly cost of the overheads, such as cost of Visa, airline ticket home, food & toiletries, accommodation, 13th salary (if you give her one ), bonus etc., plus she will probably be working a lot less hours while she is with you on vacation. What about French taxes and social welfare ? If the requirement is that she is paid a gross salary by French standards, than should you not also calculate that her salary here is tax free and calculate what the French tax deductions would be and calculate that into her rate. When you calculate it all out, you will probably find that she is already earning close to or even more than the French minimum My friend takes her helper to France for 10 weeks every year and for 3 months when she was giving birth and I know she didn't need to top up the maid's salary by any additional. So if you declare that she will be paid the French gross minimum while there, you really won't be wrong.

Just to update, Aramex was cheaper to ship, AED 213 (about US$58) compared to over $110 with Amazon. I am sure there is a point where the scales tip and it's less expensive to shop direct from Amazon. My shipment was 7lbs.

Tickets for Cirque du Soleil are always expensive, I have seen the shows in several parts of the world now and the tickets were always waayyy over the odds. I saw Dralion in London in the Albert Hall and it was my first Cirque show ever and I was very impressed, the music score is beautiful. I have seen 2 shows since and they are very much the same, just different costume's and sets. We took our daughter to Varekai, she was about 6 and she was terrified and begging us to take her home, the first half was very dark and dangerous looking, As we had paid a fortune for the tickets, my DH made her sit through it all, although I was prepared to take her home, she did enjoy the second half which made her forget about the first half, thankfully ! I do remember they have a long set at one point with two clowns on stage, (all the shows I have seen have had it) it's such a waste of time and you do feel cheated after you have spent that much money to watch a specactular.

I don't give extra time off either and she doesn't want it, she prefers to be with us in a strange country. She also doesn't take her 1 day off. I don't pay her extra for evening babysitting. We do give her a spare local phone with credit, we can contact her without it costing a fortune in roaming charges and she can text and call her family. I do give her money to buy presents for herself and her family. At the end of the trip I give her a bonus payment.

Thanks RachelA, when I tried to view a video, it said they had detected I was not in the US and US prime was only for US residents. I made an order to my S&S account and it offered me the 1 month Free Trial, which I accepted as I got a free shipping with it. We have a UK VPN, but I will try a US one and see if that makes a difference. Is Prime as good as it looks ?

Thanks ladies. I did check out the BookDepository website, but the books I want to order are slightly less expensive on Amazon and I found Amazon easier to browse and search, just because I have been using it for so many years. The books I want to buy are $90 and the shipping to UAE is $110, I imagine Aramex will be less expensive than that, so I will go with them. These are kids books which I can't find here, I do have the kindle for myself and I also love it. Thanks again for the help.

Depending on where you live, there are a few options, Jumeriah area there is a fancy dress shop in the Mall next to Mercato and further along there is another Mall (beside Dubai Zoo) which has several fancy dress shops. There is also a big store, Creative Minds, which has a great selection of kids costumes on the road where Pan Furniture is, it's past the traffic light junction and it is on the right hand side. Am sure you will find one, maybe even the Toy Shop in MOE.

So sorry you are facing this, but you seem very level headed about how to proceed ((hug)). I also would be doubtful she is unaware of his marital status, he has likely spun her some sorry tale of how you are separated. marriage over in all but name, living under the same roof for lots of reasons ...... sorting out finances, kids, school, you are crazy, local laws etc. etc. I would imagine he is asking her to be patient until he sorts everything out at home, and she is prepared to wait !! Take care of yourself, I think you are doing the right thing in being very discreet about your findings. Good Luck

Ladybee, are you backing onto the lake path by any chance ? Just yesterday, as I was having a walk, I saw a guy leaning in through the garden railing of a garden and was wondering what he was doing, I then realised there was a gardener in the bushes of the garden, seemed like he was passing something to the guy on the path, nothing big like a bike though. While I thought it was strange at the time, enough for me to think about possible reasons for what he was doing, I dismissed it with a few plausible reasons I came up with. Just notify the police that you have found a bicycle abandoned in your garden, you don't have to mention the gardener at all, let the police do the investigation. I am with you on the concern that your gardener might be innocent and the consequences for him would be awful.

We also pay above 2k, with additional babysitting and extras, she earns on average close to 3K per month minimum. She starts work at 6.30am when I get up, her hours are flexible during the day, I have not set any time for when she has to be working or off, she manages that herself depending on how she schedules the housework, then she has to be available again for the 'witching hour' from 5.30pm to 7.30pm ish. She finishes work on Thurs at 6pm, Friday off and starts work at 9am on Saturday. I am about to change the 9am Sat start now, as I have decided that I want to have a lie-in one day per week, so she will have to be available on Sat am when the kids get up. She has been with us for 2 years. We have 2 school going kids. I gave her a really good salary increase in November and a bonus when she renewed with us. Most people I know with help (filipino) are paying 2k plus.

Maybe she already has a job lined up, but is not being entirely honest with you! I have had situations where we were leaving our post, and our help stayed with us until the final day, I offered a 'stay-bonus' and they already had jobs lined up for when we left. If you really don't want to lose here now, could you offer her a bonus to renew with you, an increased salary, it might motivate her to stay with you until you know what is happening. You have been really fair to her by being open with her, especially considering you are not exactly100% sure you are leaving, a lot of people would wait until the last minute to announce the move. Best of luck.

I agree with Momofone, there is a huge gap in the market here for qualified home based childcare. There are so many girls coming out of college with childcare qualifications in Europe, US, Australia who would jump at the chance of coming to work here. There are a lot of families who would be prepared to pay UK equivalent salaries, which would be an amazing opportunity for a tax free salary. There really is a massive business opportunity if the visa/licence's could be organised. Maybe it would be easier to get a visa for someone from an English speaking country if you brought them in as a private tutor rather than a mothers helper, but I have no clue how it would work. Good luck with finding someone appropriate!

We went on Dec 30th, it was absolutely manic. The queues were horrendous, 90 minutes plus, and the rides kept breaking down, we have been to FW before and we never experienced anything like this. We arrived at 11.30am, pretty soon after it opened and it was already crazy, normally it is empty when you get there at opening time. The big hit was the Speed of Magic 3D ride, all the kids agreed that this alone was worth the trip and the inconveniences. They managed to get on 3 rides in the almost 6 hours we spent there, queues for the fast one was never ending, so they didn't get to do that one. We really regretted not buying the VIP pass, don't think it is much more expensive than the normal one, but gets you to the top of the queue quicker. Hope it's less busy this week, have fun !!

St. Petersburg is a great recommendation for a snowy city trip. Bare in mind Russia and Scandanavia have very short daylight at this time of the year. I find snowy cities are not at all picturesque though, snow is quickly turned into dirty muddy brown slush. Yuck !Head for the mountains somewhere if you want a real picturesque snow experience. It can be hellish trying to track down lost luggage at any time, but especially at this time of the year ! If your sister booked her ticket using an AMEX they have a department who will do all the tracking for you and co-ordinate between her and the airline, we have used it twice now and they do all the legwork and seem to get better info than we could when emailing and calling directly. Amex organised everything for us, it saved us huge amount of hassle and phonecalls plus after 48 hours you can expense any essentials you need to purchase. It was an amazing service which we did not know about, we called querying our insurance limits after our suitcases were missing for 3 days and they told us about this service and took over the search for it ! Maybe other credit cards have the same type of insurance, she should check it with her CC company. Hope she finds it, in my experience ,they usually do eventually show up!

Oh Hilsbils, I am so sorry you are in this situation, infertility sucks big time ! Yes, I did find myself facing a childless future in our marriage, 6 failed IVF's and we had always said we would only try 3x. My DH had enough of IVF...... the cost of it, the strain on our relationship, the health concerns, the stress on my career as I tried to discreetly pursue treatment. After 6 failed IVF's, he felt enough was enough and no more IVF. In his eyes, we had given it our best shot ..... wasn't meant for us, we had a great life, great relationship, kids weren't everything blah blah .... although he and I were both open to adoption, but that just seemed an impossible hurdle at the time. Honestly, I could not come to terms with it, I knew I wanted kids, I would have tried anything, donor eggs, surrogacy etc. he was not of the same opinion on those. I was prepared to go it alone if he really didn't want to continue, I was not getting any younger, the years were passing and I was unable to comprehend a life without kids. He finally relented and we did have success eventually. I would not have stayed in my marriage if the door to pursuing motherhood was completely closed on me ! All I can say to you is, don't give up yet on either a family or on your marriage, are you prepared to try IVF again ? if you are will he try again ? Would you consider counselling (although we never did!) Maybe you would consider IVF again now that you are in the UK, there are some fantastic clinics there, maybe you already did your IVF's in the UK, if yes, change clinics, if not research the very best clinics. There are some really good recurrent miscarriage clinics there also. There are heaps of IVF forums in the UK, you have probably accessed them already but I remember http://www.fertilityfriends.co.uk/forum/index.php being a really active and supportive one. I used to trawl the US forums for tips and info as the treatment there was so advanced. Would you / he consider other clinics in Europe / US (I already posted my experience on another post about failed IVF's). Would both of you be open to Donor eggs? there are lots of clinics in Europe (Spain, Italy and Eastern Europe) who have incredible success rates. I totally understand how isolating it feels to suffer from infertility, undergo treatment and the inevitable strain on relationships, All I can give you is my experience, I went through it and came out the other side. I have friends who jointly decided to remain childless and have lived happy and very fullfilling lives, I have a cousin who did give up her desires for children to save her marriage and her marriage still did not survive, he went on to have a family and because of her age that was no longer an option for her. Good luck Hilsbils, I wish you peace with whatever decision you make, ultimately I really hope you get the family you wish for.

Oopsiedaisy, I agree with you, I also have never met a rude service person here in Dubai, although I have met lots of disinterested, untrained ones here on a scale that I have never experienced in any other country I have lived in, so I guess that is limited to Dubai. On the other hand, friendly staff is not limited to Dubai either, live in the US for a few years and you will find staff just as friendly as here but who know what they are doing ! You really do have to fight your corner to get any kind of service here in Dubai. In my experience, in the US or anywhere in Europe, you purchase a service or goods that doesn't do what it says on the package, it's a no-brainer, the shop will replace without any hassle, in the US you would likely receive compensation for the inconvenience on top of the problem being sorted out. Here, dealing with something like that is absolutely impossible, not the assistants fault that they really don't care, not the managers fault who also doesn't really care about the faulty goods you just purchased either because he doesn't really have any authority do do anything other than wear the managers badge, but it's also not the customers fault, who is the one who has the biggest loss having paid way above the odds for said goods in the first place. Just because someone is a 'rich' expat on a big package does not mean they have to shut up and put up, walk away and say oh that poor guy only earns AED2000 per month, I will just buy a new one ! If screaming the loudest is the only thing that will help you get someone to listen to you, than that's what people end up doing. It's certainly not a case of self-entitlement because of their 'ex-pat packages' (certainly not among the people I know who have reached that point here in Dubai), just a case of having to fight for their consumer rights. I think I have rarely witnessed rudeness just for rudeness sake, but I have seen people frustrated here to a point that they are so angry they end up saying things they would never in a million years have said if they were not pushed beyond their limit.

OopsieDaisy, not complaining just adding a different spin to the reasons people may appear to be rude, not necessarily because they have 'forgotten where they came from' or because they think they have money, or more money than others. I have lived all over the world, in countries where I did not speak and could not understand the language, and honestly, I have never encountered the frustrations I have encountered here in Dubai. I can see how people who live here long term can get absolutely jaded from the day to day frustrations of trying to do simple things.

I saw an expat male at an electronics store the other day, being extremely polite in the face of the most unbelieveable stupidity by a group of about 3 staff (who left the other customers stand in line to all give their opinion), he finally snapped and I can tell you it was only when he got aggressive that they finally conceded to give him some written proof that he had returned the goods and his CC would be credited. He was explaining so nicely and very clearly why taking the assistants 'word' that his credit card would be credited was not really good enough, he explained in simpler and simpler terms and the message was still not getting through. When my turn came, I met with similar stupidity and was left standing there for close to 30 minutes while they discussed what code they needed to input so I could use my credit-note. During this time they would serve other customers, come back to trying to sort out 'the code', finally I lost it too. I left the store absolutely fuming, blood pressure at an all time high, and did not have one-nano second of patience for the next untrained person I met. Really, in two years in Dubai I have come full circle and really never pass judgement anymore when I see the frustrations of people paying good money for services / goods. I too absolutely hate being shadowed in shops by the shop assistant !
