Yes, I have tried them, I now buy all my fish from them, because I am very fussy about extra extra fresh fish and you are right, their fish is amazing. I had tried everywhere for good fish, even Galleries Lafayette on their delivery day and I still think Chez Charles fish is the best I have found in Dubai and the fact they deliver home makes it so convenient. Their veggies are outstanding also, with a price tag to match though ! I have yet to try their meat. They are only in operation about 6 months, so hopefully they will make things a bit more client friendly, i.e. would prefer to pay by credit card on their website rather than cash on delivery. They have a limited range of products, but their focus is imported high quality gourmet food items, so I won't ever ever be doing my weekly shop there. The 48 hour delivery means you do have to plan ahead, but I can take that for a decent piece of fish. I am really happy to use them and they have a great concept to build on.

Thats the confusing part D.R., she has travelled with us on 2 occasions before and we never had this experience with her. Maybe it's a bit of arrogance on her part and feeling she is indispensable and maybe a little bit of 'showing off' in front of our families. S.A, Babe, for family meals we try to make sure our kids eat with us, but we don't expect them to sit at the table for the duration, particularly while we have a long drawn out lunch, usually it's not a problem, but the excitement of getting together with their cousins makes for some crazy times. Anyway, that one is sorted out now as we have explained that she needs to eat before us, so that she can be available should we need her to help out at any point. CA, that must have been an awful situation for you. Sorry to hear about your friend, it must be dreadful to lose someone in such a manner. I am being a bit unfair really, as she has been a good help with getting settled into our house, it would have been tough to do it without having her around. We have done a few things in the last few days and I have not invited her to join us, while I feel bad about it, I think it's better for all of us not to be living in each others ears. I know there is not enough work to keep her occupied full time, but so be it! I was actually considering sending her back to Dubai early, but DH talked reason and convinced me otherwise, as it is a very nice convenience to have a trusted built in babysitter whenever I need it, and she is being well paid for it. Our helper is travelling with us this summer, she has travelled with us on 2 occasions before and has always been fine, but this trip she seems to have totally lost the plot. We went to visit my nieces/nephew and had several bags of gifts for them, she carried some of the bags into the house while I carried the others, she went in first and runs to kiss and hug the kids before me, I'm like WTF, I could see their little heads trying to wriggle away from her and get to me and their cousins !!!, THEN she hands out the gifts to the nieces and nephew, which were gifts from my kids to their cousins, I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Had big family dinner at my in-laws, meeting my SIL's new partner for the first time, next thing our helper grabs a plate and sits down with all of us for dinner. At home she rarely sits with us and prefers to eat in her room. On our other trips she would eat at my IL's or parents kitchen table. Then the cousins gulp down their dinner and run off to play, the kids are so excited to be together and playing crazy. My SIL, hubby and I are up and down from the table intervening with the kids, "be careful' 'don't throw that' 'let the little one's join in', 'don't open the gate' etc. etc. She is sitting there with the family, helping herself to seconds, and does not make a single attempt to get up, until my husband has to ask her if she would 'mind' supervising the kids so SIL and I can finish our dinner and then she can finish eating when we are done. The same day, all the family are sitting outside on the terrace and my little one fell fast asleep, mid-afternoon, we had just arrived the previous day so we were letting her have a nap. Our maid, walked right through the middle of our group, and started to wake up my DD, without even asking me or DH if that was what we wanted. Even when our maid is on top form, she is the least proactive person I have ever met, I mean why start now and why start with a sleeping kid ! DD1 is getting really irritated with her too, I can't count the number of times the kids have asked me something and she will answer or butt in. Three times now in less than a week, DD1 has been punished for being rude to her with comments such as "I was not speaking to you!", "Mom, can you tell X to stop butting in when we are speaking!" last one was "I am speaking to my Mom, it's not your business" said with in a massively irritated and loud tone. Oh and then plonking herself in the garden chatting to my FIL, when it was pretty clear that all he wanted to do was read the newspaper ! She was supposed to be a big help, we are moving into a new house and I thought it would be a great asset to have her. I feel bad leaving her at home when we are heading off, so we always give her the choice, she can have the time off at home or join us and she always decides to come along. I am sure I am doing something wrong along the way to have it get to this point, but have enough hassle with the house move and don't need to be dealing with a cocky maid. OMG, she is totally and utterly negligent, there is no way you can keep her ! Releasing her is the easy option and what ........she heads off on her merry way and finds another family. She needs to know there are repercussions to her negligence, having responsibility for a child needs to be taken seriously. Accidents happen with kids, but lying about it when there could (and was) a serious injury that needs treating is just unacceptable. Good luck finding someone good next time.

I also understood that homes in places like Jumeriah and Al Barsha cannot be purchased by expatriates, but maybe I am wrong! If that is the case, it would explain why properties in areas like Arabian Ranches, Meadows etc are more expensive. Those are also the communities where a lot of expats want to live, so it's maybe demand vs supply. Anything I read about the property market here seems to indicated it is recovering quite quickly, particularly in the buy to let market. Tax free income on the rent and no capital gains tax on any profit when you do sell is very attractive, and a foreigner (non-resident) can purchase here very easily.

I take my kids to Dr. Khan at Cooper Clinic, he was recommended to me on this website. He is really nice man and very thorough, US trained and worked for several years in the US. http://cooperhealthclinic.com/ped1.htm He even hands out his mobile phone number, and calls to check up on the patient !

I am assuming her husband is here in the country with her, because otherwise she would be more than 4 months pregnant, if the last time she saw him was in Feb. I am not sure if she can just leave on the next plane now that she has tested positive with the gov. agency. You may need to talk to her embassy to see what the next steps are. You are right to call it quits, we had a very tough experience in a previous country with a unmarried helper who got pregnant, had an incredibly difficult pregnancy and a very ill baby born to her, we ended up caught up in it all, the emotional side of it and the financial side, it was terrible for her and a huge stress for us along with it being financial disaster ! We didn't have to contend with the legal issue's which have to be dealt with here ! Good Luck

The parking spots in the underground are pretty tight, and the ramps to go from one floor to the other are even tighter. They also have no monitoring of spaces, they just let in car after car. I got stuck in there one for ages one day with no spaces and it was just a snarl of cars trying to get back to the exit. Good luck !

I am thinking of selling mine, mainly because both kids end up fighting over who sits in it (thats my 9 yo and 4yo fighting over it). it's the dark colour, the cusions are new (white with black circles, contemporary looking) I just need to locate the bar and strap, I know I put them somewhere safe ! Oh no October, so frustrating ! Carrefour today had in stock 3 of the 4 colors I need for the printer, I stocked up on those and tried to insert a black cartridge in place of the missing blue cartridge, but it didn't like that option. ! so I am still without a printer. I emailed HP a few days ago to complain, it's funny, as I have had 3 emails back from different departments telling me it has been passed on to xyz, the proverbial 'hot potato', great customer service !! <em>edited by mum2girls on 06/06/2012</em>

GM, wouldn't it just be great if we could keep them in a bubble forever !! I am almost sure now I know where it is coming from and I am also remembering comments her friend made when describing other kids, so I think that is where the topic has originated from. I don't think was in any malicious way at all! As someone else said, it's about teaching them our values and helping them understand that different cultures value different things, rightly or wrongly.

I guess a similar situation is those who have carrot red hair and white skin. All my cousins were redheads with lilywhite skin and freckles and I know they got a lot of teasing about it when growing up, my cousin hated the idea her kids were going to have red hair.

We are a mixed couple and one of my kids looks like me, fair, blue eyes, freckles and mousy blonde hair. The other looks like my DH, she is tanned skin, brown eyes and dark straight hair. My dark eyed DD is now beginning to complain that she wishes she had her sisters skin color, and regularly holding her arm up against mine or her sister comparing the skin color. A few weeks ago she told me she hates the color of her skin. DH and I absolutely could not figure out where it is coming from, we never mention it, and both are plastered in factor 50 whenever we go to the pool or beach. It is really troubling me that she is so aware of it and viewing it in such a negative way now. Ironically her best friend is a lovely little Indian girl, so based on the comments below it's now got me thinking that maybe it's a topic of discussion between them at school. So yeah, have to say, I would not want her seeing advertisements about bleaching her skin color, and I agree a place like Kidzania is not appropriate for that kind of advertising.

I didn't say her singing was outstanding... but her PERFORMANCE. She is an entertainer, not a singer, and we all knew that when we bought tickets. I wouldn't be expecting Elton John to perform the same acrobatics... really ?? oh....and people like Kylie and Robbie just stand there and sing do they ? No but Madonna has ALWAYS been about the theatrics. It's about the performance as a whole. When she first performed Vogue at the MTV awards, she didn't even have a mic in hand, but mimed the whole thing. I was about putting on a show. Kylie doesn't sing live either - certainly not the entire show, she's just better at lip-synching. Elton John is never going to do a dance routine, he's a piano man. Thanks McB for the details, I have calmed down now, but still will follow up with them. They cannot sell a printer which they cannot support with the required ink, I am absolutely incensed about it. Anyway, I now know about the cartridge refill companies which hopefully will solve any future problems. Sam7, we did try to find an alternative, but HP said there was no alternative available in the ME for that printer. Hence the reason we bought a new printer, even though we had a perfectly good and relatively new one sitting on our desk. If only I had known about the cartridge refill companies then! EM2San, not an unfair generalization at all ! Have never run out of printer ink so quickly in all the years I have been using HP printer. I purchased a new printer soley because the printer ink was supposedly available in the UAE and now everytime we run out of ink we are left weeks without a printer because the stuff is not in stock. Last time when I finally found stock, I bought several cartridges, but now that is gone, I have no printer again and who knows when I will find the cartridges. It's an absolute disgrace. I am all riled up again now !!! LOL

For sure, she cannot sing live, she even lip syncs badly. That's well known about her concerts, even Elton John slags her off about it every chance he gets. She can dance though .... the Like a Prayer and Vogue dance routines were great. She really has an amazing body, apart from the ugly arms. Her boyfriend is scrumptious and her son Rocco is on stage with the dancers for a few of the routines, he looked like he was having a blast. But it is definitely an over 18 show. Yes, 2 hours late coming onstage, the crowd even started booing at a few points. Her first words were 'Hello Abu Dhabi, it's HOT' ......... no s@#T! She was amazing, the show really is spectacular. It is extremely raunchy and graphic, hard to believe it was allowed in the M.E., wonder if tonights show will be censored. She was onstage for about 1 1/2 hours and did not falter once despite wearing leather and pvc outfits so can't have been very comfortable.

Oh my gosh, they are so dignified and composed, but the grief etched on their faces is heartbreaking. I was sobbing watching it, it hard to fathom how you could keep going after something like that. Let me rephrase my opening post then. Never buy a HP Photosmart Plus printer/scanner/photcopier which uses 178 cartridges because they are RARELY in stock in Dubai. Thanks for the Dragonmart tip.

Thanks for the offer October, It's the 178 cartridge, for the combination (printer, scanner, copier) Photosmart printer. The cartridge is rarely in stock. Spent so much time yesterday trekking around MOE, from Carrefour to Jacky's to Jumbo, to CompuMe. Have been trying for weeks now to find it. We always buy HP printers too and are always happy with their reliability, but not much good to me if they can't supply the most crucial part of the printing process. Diamante, would you by any chance have a name of a refilling shop? I remember now hearing a radio advertisement for one. MI, that maybe explains their supply problem then, HP totally out of the loop. Even more reason not to buy a HP printer then.

Try this company http://www.vfsglobal.com/spain/UAE/. It seems all the shengen countries are using them to process visas. Maybe they can tell you the names of the agencies in Dubai who will submit the visa application and maybe be able to fastrack it for you.

Thanks DesertRose ! Just to clarify, Shengen and Irish visa do not have that minimum salary requirement. We got tourist visas for her, not a work visa, so maybe that's the difference. We just have to declare that she has been employed by us for more than 1 year and that we will cover all expenses and any medical emergencies. There is absolutely no requirement to meet any labour laws in the countries we are visiting, she is not required to declare her earnings, nor does she have to provide any proof of her ability to support herself. My husband, as her sponsor, has to present proof that we can support her.

I get what you are saying, but when we travel for work, we normally get to come home on the weekends. She will be with her employer all the time 7 days a week for 4 weeks. Even though she won't necessarily be 'working' in the same manner as she would be here, she is still available if I need her. I know some people consider it as a vacation for their maids so they don't pay extra, as they get the benefit of travelling and experiencing another country. I am kind of torn about it really. I will be giving her some additional pocket money to spend here and there on souvenirs, but I don't know if I should be paying her additionally for the 4 'off' days she will not be taking.

I guess he can ...... if he's paying the bill ! I assume he is not going to take on the bill, so I don't see how he can enforce a particular company on you. You can also cite the same reasons as him, that for security reasons you want to hire your own cleaner who you have personally vetted and who you have had personal recommendations for. It is amazing what landlords get up to here !

What I forgot to say also, the difference is facilities is usually very big. We have lived in several countries and we have always included the French Lycee on our schools tours, and without fail they absolutely do not match up to the facilities you will find in english speaking International Schools. That being said, their fees are usually a fraction of what other schools charge. So you are not really comparing Apples to Apples.

We were in a similar situation when we moved here and as far as we know, there are no true bilingual schools here in Dubai for French/English. So you will have to choose one or the other. We choose an English speaking school, which unfortunately does not even have a 2nd language (other than the required Arabic) until Middle School. We do struggle to find after school tutoring in French. Comparing British, US, French curriculum is going to be difficult. Even the French will tell you that the French system is tough from a very early stage. A lot of our French friends choose to opt out of it, those who know their assignment here is for a specific number of years will chose to keep their kids in the French Curric so they can slot back in easily enough when they go back home. I really don't know how you can convince him, just keep the lines of communication open and hopefully he will change his mind. I would have loved to have had a 3rd, but it is impossible for me now. I would have gone down the adoption route for a 3rd child, but my DH did not want to have our lives disrupted with years of going through the adoption process, I have had to come to terms with that. btw, you can do gender selection on an embryo, but I don't think any reputable clinic would do an IVF treatment for a couple purely to allow them to 'balance' their family. I also cannot imagine anyone choosing do to an IVF cycle and all it entails, for the sole purpose of selecting the gender of the embryo to be transferred.
