We rented a car for a month through Gargash Motors when we arrived here and were awaiting our residency visas. We had our own car in the garage as we were not allowed drive that, but the rental car was no problem. (PS that was a year ago, so maybe rules have changed!) Alternatively, you could use Saferdriver, it will be more expensive than a taxi service though. Welcome to Dubai, hope you settle in well. <em>edited by mum2girls on 11/01/2012</em>

They have 2k belonging to me also, I should have guessed it would be complicated to get it back!!!!! Did you actually go to one of their main account offices or to an office in the Malls? If you have not gone to the main office, I would suggest you go there (there are a few, we went to the one near Dubai Mall in DIFC). The staff there are much more knowledgeable than any of the ones in the other stores. I have been getting massive phone bills every month with every kind of charge and we did mange to get it explained to us in the main office. (Didn't get any money back, but at least someone could explain to me what had happened, even if it was legally stealing money from my phone).

Can absolutely sympathise how torn you are, it really is a difficult situation to find yourself in. I would be very cautious about getting her treatment done here, as someone else said, if there are any complications you could find yourself with mounting medical bills and find you have to hire a carer to look after her. We had a very costly experience in another country, our part time helper had complications in her pregnancy and her son was born very ill, it turned out to be horrendously expensive for us, but once we started paying we could not stop and leave her in the lurch. Really, I feel bad even complaining about it, as she went through ****, but we ended up dipping hugely into our savings and it took a big emotional and financial toll on us. Also, if you were being transferred abroad for whatever reasons, she would have to face the visa rules of her age limiting her future employment prospects. In a lot of cases these helpers only have job security from one year to the next, there is no longterm employment guarantee when you work in a big expat community like Dubai. Depending on how long she has worked for you, maybe you could give her a severance pay of 4 weeks salary per year, her flight home and a cash allowance towards her surgery. In most companies a 4 week severance package is pretty good and it would go a very long way back in her home country. Good Luck <em>edited by mum2girls on 10/01/2012</em>

Would be worried the cufflinks might be a bit too personal, but I am going to get those for my Dad and FIL as birthday gifts, thanks for that idea. AF3 and Frang. I will try out the Arte Souk, have been meaning to go, but keep missing the dates, putting a reminder into my phone now. Love the idea of the knife, message holder (where would I look for those ?) and the Bateel dates. Will have look in gallery , I remember really liking their stuff when we arrived here last year, but have not been back since, and I really do like the idea of the architectural book (despite it being obvious, it never crossed my mind LOL) Thanks again ladies

Emirates have started a direct flight from Dublin as of January 7th. It's about 500Euros. Could she book a cheap Ryanair, Aerlingus flight to Dublin? Also Ethiad have teamed up with Aer Arann, if she was happy enough to go to AbuDhabi, that might be less expensive.

When we moved in and saw our first cockroach, it turned out there were heaps of them in the outside drain which is how they got into the house, I assume. I got our house sprayed inside and out from Ridapest Control, our house 5 bedroom cost 600 DHS with a 3 month guarantee. We get them to come and spray outside every six months now. No help to you now, but I think they (or some of them) were at Al Maha resort when we were there on 28th/ 29th / 30th. I thought it was strange to see a group of guys eating lunch together in the restaurant (it's a very couples place), later that evening, I overheard them requesting to have the gym opened at night so they could train as they were football players.

Burj Khalifa was absolutely AMAZING!!! Traffic was managed really well, took us less than 1 hour to get home. Really it was something else, we loved it.

I used Amrit in Satwa for mine. They do come and measure, make the curtains and install them and curtain poles if you need. I did go to their store to chose the fabric though.

Edna, your analogy is completely irrelevant to the situation we are discussing. You are right, this kind of thing does happen all over the work, however it is usually the modus operandi of unscrupulous landlords who take advantage of disadvantaged and vulnerable tenants. To be fair, I can only talk of western developed countries, but in developed countries these kind of tactics would be deemed illegal. I honestly don't understand your stance that Legal action in entirely impractical, if that was the case we could all take whatever action we deemed necessary if we believe we have been wronged. The legal route might be impractical or take longer than we would like, it does not mean that we can use bully tactics as an alternative by making our own call on what is right and what is wrong. That is called a lawless country. As I said, I don't live on the Palm, I won't be living in Dubai on a permanent basis, for as long as we are here I will be a tenant. I hope I never fall foul of someone (either directly or indirectly) who uses us, our family home, our hard earned cash as a pawn in a much bigger game. No one is saying the developer/ management company should not try to recover their costs, what most people are saying is their METHODS and CONDUCT for recovering their costs are unjust, they are targeting and intimidating innocent people who have nothing whatsoever to do with the developer. I remain bemused by anyone supporting these kind of tactics.

I am bemused that people can condone intimidation and harrassment of these innocent tenants. It is an abuse of power by the developer, how can anyone believe this is the only (and valid) option open to the developer. If the developer / management company have a issues with the owners, why are they not taking legal action against said owners? exactly as DeserRose explains. Is this their preferred option because legal action against the homeowners would mean they would have to defend their own failure to meet their side of the contract?

I totally understand why tenants are not taking action, legal action costs money and it is a never ending pit of stress both financial and emotional. Any tenant would be crazy to take that on personally for a property that has a maximum commitment of 12 months lease. I don't live on the Palm, but if I did, I would not be taking on the stress of legal action and the costs. It does not mean the tenants have no right to complain about the unjustness of it all, they certainly have every right to complain and vent and try to get it resolved without taking on a huge legal case, especially if the landlords are overseas etc. It would be futile. Nakheel are the ones who should be taking individual action against the owners (rightly or wrongly) but using the tenants as pawns in their bully-boy game to put pressure on the owners is an utter disgrace and it is incredible that they are allowed to get away with it by the government. I guess in turn, the owners should be getting together and taking court action against Nakheel if they do indeed feel Nakheel have failed to meet their obligations. I really feel for the tenants who are being scre*wd with no one protecting their rights. So yes, the landlords have something to answer for, however Nakheel is acting like it's the wild west, I think this has certainly been an 'own goal' of the highest order for Nakheel, it will take years for them to recover any semblance of a reputation after this. Hopefully Nakheel will do the right thing, take there grievances through the courts and handle the dispute in a mature and honourable manner and the tenants can go back to having access to all the facilities they are entitled to. <em>edited by mum2girls on 20/12/2011</em>

Really PB, she earns about Euro500/per month. plus some extra. Maybe I have written something incorrectly and it looks like she earns more !! I do think we do pay a bit on the high side for here, but all my husband's colleagues and some of our friends pay in the 2k range. Plus our last help in another country was about USD1200 per month, so we thought it was a bargain when we came here.

We are European with 2 school going kids, I don't work. We live in a 5 bedroom house. I hired a girl who came with great references from a European family. They were paying her 1700 and we started her on 2000, which includes an allowance for food. During school term, she gets up in the morning around 6.00am to help me organise lunch boxes and breakfast. She usually finishes by 6.30 or 7.00pm. She does not have specific rest hours during the day, I wanted to keep it flexible, but once her work is done, she takes a few hours off during the day and hangs out in her room. She works 6 days per week with Fridays off, so she usually finishes at 7pm on Thursday and starts again at 8am on Saturday. She can help herself to our food and mostly she eats what we eat, but I don't buy her specific food or toiletries. If we need evening babysitting during the week (Sat to Thurs) that is included in her salary. if we need her to work on a Friday, we will offer to give her Saturday off, but she always refuses as she wants to earn extra money. We pay AED 25/hr for additional babysitting (which I think is too much now, probably 15 to 20 aed seems to be what others pay their maid if they are paying extra, some people I know, have all additional hours included in the monthly salary). We rarely use her for babysitting during the week, Friday night seems to be our night out, so we always end up paying additional. We always give her a little extra bonus when we have visitors staying. She gets 1 month holiday and 1 paid ticket home per year. I give her an end of year bonus (but that is discretionary) of 1 month salary and a bonus at christmas. She works on public holidays, but so far she has had about half of them off as we didn't need her. We kitted out her room with a small fridge, TV and DVD player, small bed, chest of drawers, bedside table, some storage boxes for under her bed (all furniture was bought from Ikea). We got her filippino TV channels in her room, the agreement was we would pay for the installation and she would pay the monthly fees, but in the end we don't bother to deduct the fees from her salary, I think it's about 70AED. I buy her about 100 Aed worth of phone cards per month, but this also is discretionary, it was not agreed as part of her contract. She is really great, very sweet and we are happy with her, but the biggest hassle had been her asking for loans within a few months of her joining us, so we have now made it very clear and told her absolutely no loans. If loaning money or advancing salaries will bug you, (it really annoyed me because it was a constant request) then tell whoever you are interviewing that no loans or no advances and not to ever ask, later you can change your mind if you decide to. I agree with EVERYONE who says, start on the low side and offer incentives as you go along, present a schedule/ work week/ work day that is longer than you expect and then you just have the hours you need, rather than starting on the minimum side and then hassle if you think it is not what you need, it can cause a lot of resentment on both sides if either of you thinks you are being 'cheated'! You will be the hero and the best employer ever, if you tell her she needs to work 6 days a week and some weeks you only need her 5 or 5 1/2 days so you give her an extra day off. Same with public holidays, no problem if she knows up front they are included in her salary, she will be over the moon when you give her the 'extra' days off. Thanks so very much ladies for all the great advice. October so sorry to hear about your daughter, I cannnot even begin to imagine how debilitating a permanent migraine would be. I hope you have found the Doctore who can help her. I know cheese is a huge trigger for me, so I try to avoid as much as possible, I can't see what other food might be triggering it, I too have kept a log (but ages ago). I do try to make sure I am hydrated and I also try to avoid any strenuous heavy lifting exercises, as I know that usually brings on an immediate migraine. I have pretty much tried everything, including acupuncture and medication. It also seems to go into remission, I can go months without a migraine and then have one almost every day for weeks. I have had an MRI and everything seems to be normal, so it's nothing too sinister thankfully. Calimom, would love to hear your experience after you have the treatment. Thanks again ladies!

Really !! What a shame, I thought I had finally hit on a Cobone deal that 'did what it said on the label' , bummer ! In my case it was not even suggested that I needed the cleaning, it was offered as a recommendation before a bleaching. The thing was I really did need the cleaning, so I felt it was appropriate in my case, and I went ahead with it. I didn't feel there was any hard sell. The dentist also offered me an additional 10 minutes of bleaching, but I was happy with the results so I declined. For sure, if you want ultra brilliant white teeth that glow in the dark, I don't think this would give you that result. But I am happy with mine a week later, I wanted a more natural look and I think I got that. I can clearly tell there is a difference, because I have a bottom tooth which is crowned, and that is my benchmark for comparison of my natural teeth. Anyway, I felt it was worth the AED 495 I spent, absolutely doubt I would think it was worth the 2,900AED they claimed it would normally cost. Gosh, I h ope I haven't led anyone astray now, I would feel bad passing on a poor recommendation.

Bought a Cobone voucher for a dental examination and bleaching. Had a very thorough (and much needed) exam, he took pictures and went through everything in detail, absolutely no hard sell on any of the work required. He did recommend a cleaning before I had the bleaching, which cost AED300 additional (I really did need a cleaning) The dentist did the cleaning himself and he did the bleaching. I was worried I would end up with fake looking white-bleached teeth, but I had a really good outcome and am really happy with the result. Just thought I would give an update.

I would want to know the reason why she ran away from her previous employers, she may have had a very good reason for doing so. Personally, I would be very worried that she feels she cannot cope with your toddler and has asked to leave because of HIM, that would be the make or break decision for me, she would have to go ! I would be unable to trust her for 1 minute, I would never have an easy mind if she was babysitting. Good Luck

Ask her how she will repay you the money she owes you !!! That is a lot of money she has taken in advance. Sounds like she had this planned. The problem is if she does not find a new job within 30 days of leaving you, you will have to put her on a plane back home anyway. If it were me I think I would use her next months salary to buy her a one way ticket back to the philippines. However, apparently a lot of them get airside and then take a flight to Kish (or wherever) and just come back on a visitor visa, so if she has really been deceitful, then I would also put a ban on her, as per IAMVP, so she cannot get around having her sponsorship cancelled. The other option is to get her to repay you before you agree to release her to another employer, but make sure she does not abscond in the meantime. My helper who was moving from a local family to an expat family, had to pay the local family 4,000 to cover their costs, before they would release her. Her cousin is now looking for a job, currently working for a local family, and they will only release her when she pays them 2,000AED (she earns 1.100AED with no full day off !) I don't know how it works though, maybe ask around, and see if you can do the same. Good Luck

A few people I know have recommended Milicent Grimm, she has a clinic at the Fairmont Hotel, she is apparently the best in Dubai. I had the initial consultation with her and it was extremely thorough, she charged AED750 for that appointment. I have since chickened out (again !) and have not gone back to have the surgery done, so I don't know the costs. But I am still thinking I may be brave enough to do it and I would definitely go to her.

He really has done the best highlights I have had in a long time, my hairdresser at home commented that they were really good. Freckly: I can't remember exactly, but it's 650Dhs or 750Dhs, my hair is shoulder length. If you want a cut he will recommend one of the other guys, that is the only downside, I find. I have tried a few of the hairdressers there now, I think Raoul and Batha are the best of them. When you book the highlights you need to tell him you would like to have a cut at the same time.

We did think she was 'the one', but there are some things which have come up that drive me nuts, i.e. looking for loans and advances. But that may not bother another employer. My friend, for example, is always loaning her helper money and giving advances, it does not bother her one iota, she is happy to do it! So if the things which annoyed her old employer would not annoy you, than you can discount those, and make you decision based on the rest of the reference the employer gave you. . But do be wary that the employer may be watering it down so that they don't have the hassle of sending her home. <em>edited by mum2girls on 23/11/2011</em>

I bought 2 expensive bedside tables from PB Mirdiff, they were delivered one with a matt finish and the other with a gloss finish, which I didn't really notice for over a week. They sent their 'engineer' outto look at it, he decided to gloss the matt one, pulled out his tin of gloss varnish and paint brush, I freaked out. He called the office, told them I was not having it and they took the bedside table and returned with a matching one. Other than the initial 'Dubai solution', I found them fine to deal with. I bet Pottery Barn in the US do not realise the quality of service that is being attached to their name, (even if it is a franchise type arrangement) maybe get in touch with someone in the US. Generally it seems that they have invested quite a bit in training their staff, they seem more in tune than most other stores, so I would say PB would not want their brand tarnished with a bad service image, anyewhere in the world.

I use Patrick at Jetset in Grosvenor house. He was recommend to me on here, I have been going to him for almost 1 year now, he does a really great job with my blonde highlights. He is Irish and worked for years in a big-name salon in London, he only does color, does not do a cut.

Pinkleton, The colorist is an Irish guy, Patrick, who manages JetSet in Grosvenor house, he doesn't cut though. The guy who cuts (trims really) is Raul. I really love the highlights he does, it's been a long time since I was this happy with my hair, I have been going to him for a year now.
