iPhone 5 battery certainly isn't great, but neither was the one in my iPhone 4 so I'm used to the regular recharge routine, although it is bit of a pain. If you google this issue you'll see loads of people have the same problem, there are some recommendations that may help you to increase battery life, but no magic method i've found to make a huge difference with the phones I've had. There are times when I think back to the days when my trusty Nokia could go 3 or 4 days between recharges, it also worked fine after being dropped (lots of times), still worked fine after ending up in the sea once, it didn't need a fancy case to protect it and it was much more comfortable to hold and use as a phone! Saying this though, I do love getting all my emails on my phone, the many apps and games, music etc etc that the iPhone offers...

Not sure if this will help you but I bought some pretty nice baby clothes in Gap recently (Ibn Battuta Branch) for a friend's newborn baby. They weren't cheap but my friend really liked them...

You have my sympathy! My DDs are older now and haven't had a 'nit scare' letter from the school in years, but when they were small it seemed like every other week someone in one of their classes would be found to have been infected and the school would ask all parents to check and treat their children's hair at home. We used to have a regular routine - wash hair and apply loads of conditioner combed through with a normal comb, then get stuck in with the nit comb in front of something good on TV so DDs were distracted for as long as it took. Then when hair was dry i'd straighten it with my heated straighteners. That way DDs liked the experience more as they had lovely silky hair afterwards and anything in the hair that had escaped the nit comb would be fried. However I guess straighteners alone wouldn't get anything clinging onto the scalp. By and large we avoided infestation by doing this every week or so for a few years - you have to do it frequently to catch the little critters at each stage of their development cycle. (By critters I mean the nits not the children!) Anyway I wish anyone facing a nit arrival all the best in their eradication efforts as it was quite honestly one part of my DDs' early years school experience that I loathed.

DH and I are going tomorrow to hear Ian Rankin and others. We've been a number of times in previous years and always found it great with good speakers, interesting discussions and a lovely atmosphere. edited by muse on 07/03/2013

DH took our guests last Wednesday. They arrived there when it opened at 10am and could get on anything they wanted and it got busier as the day progressed, but when they left about 4pm they said there still weren't crazy queues and there are loads of sunbeds apparently. I'm sure they also said there was an option to purchase fastrack type tickets for the most popular rides to enable legit queue-jumping, but I can't be certain how much these cost or how exactly they work. They all had a great time there anyway, 3 adults and 2 children.

[i'> Recently the best book I read was The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Completley different to anything else, pure magical. I hope they make it into a film.[/i'> I really enjoyed this book as well when i read it a while ago - I also loved Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clark which is in a similar(ish) genre.

I've been going there since the Summer and have been very pleased indeed with them for cutting and colouring, and that they are located close to where I live is the icing on the cake for me. It's definitely not cheap, but probably not the most expensive either, and in my experience they have been much better than anywhere I have tried previously. They also do great head massages!

Hi TJC, may I ask which Spinneys branch stocks it these days? I've tried the MC one and they no longer have any of the Dylon dyes at all and haven't for quite a while, neither does the one in the Green Community... I did email the Dylon customer service address asking for stockists here, but haven't had a reply yet.

I've seen all the Twilight movies with teenaged DDs, and I do rather like the first one of the series as I think it a fairly watchable example of a teenage angsty forbidden love type thing (which can be enjoyable from some years of distance!), but from then on in they've got duller, more poorly acted, and with cliche-heavy directing in my opinion. I generally enjoy fantasy & vampires too, but Twilight's 'soulless' vampires are allowed way too much self doubt and insecure naval-gazing to seriously compete in the genre. Fifty Shades is believed to have started here afterall. I was pleased to see the final one just to have the series over and done with to be honest - i'm not loathing it, not about to leave the cinema, but am just rather stunned that this story could be dragged out over 4 books and 5 movies! If i'd been in charge of editing any of it the books would have been about a tenth of the length and one movie would have been more than enough! My DDs are of much the same opinion really. Pleased to have done it, and decent enough story but dragged out too long and won't be re-watched or re-read probably. edited by muse on 18/11/2012

I was in the Outlet Mall recently and the shop that sells the Gap stuff (I can't remember what its called) had loads of white jeans, but as is usual with outlet shopping it didn't have all styles and sizes. Other shops also had a few pairs that I noticed.

You guys must have much better eyesight than I do as I can't see any hint of a nose, cute button or big old beak, at all! But you're right Beebers, it's too easy to critcise and I do rather like the whole Mrs Nike rebrand logo.

The Lindt Chilli Choc is my downfall as well - absolutely love it. I am fortunate as well in that normally chocolate doesn't last 2 seconds in my house, but neither the kids nor DH like this one, so its mine, all mine!

The Old Library at Ductac MoE has a good selection of books for children and adults. We've been family members for a few years now and have borrowed loads of books, including their range of Jacqueline Wilson ones. They also take note of requests for books you'd like them to get.

That's the same answer my boss would give. I do feel a Dubai equivalent of the "poets" day coming on though (p*** off early, tomorrow's Saturday), but "poetf" day just doesn't have the same ring about it - any suggestions for alternative names?

If you have an iPhone then I've found the "Nike+ GPS" app (in the iTunes app store) good to use on my runs - it seems to be pretty accurate for distance and timing. It also links to the Nike+ website for further stats and info about your runs. Obviously this won't be much use if you've not got an iPhone - so hopefully others will also suggest alternative gadgets.

Another kindle fan here. If Santa is feeling generous I would recommend you also ask for a kindle cover with a light, but they are not cheap. The benefit of the cover, as well as offering protection, is that it feels much more like reading a book when you can hold the kindle like a book, and also the light uses very little battery but provides ample light to read by in darkness or low lighting. These covers are available through the amazon store.

I have been to the Saudi Embassy on behalf of my boss for visa related stuff and have had no problems in going in a speaking with staff there, in fact they were extremely helpful, and there is as ladies' area. I was just dressed in normal business clothes.

As far as I know there are indoor skate areas in both Wafi Mall and Dubai Mall - at least that's where i've taken my children, although not for a while so this could have changed. I have also heard a rumour that there will shortly be a BMX type bike area coming in Motor City near the new bike shop at the Sports City end...

Many thanks to you all for your words of wisdom, kindness and encouragement. Your experiences are inspiring and I will keep this thread to add to the bank of info i've collected to keep me strong at all times as well as acting on the sound advice given and I am very grateful to have the benefit of learning from you all. Having successfully managed to bury my head in the sand for the last 25 years or so regarding giving up methods, its all new to me and I hadn't thought of it in terms of freedom until now, but suddently I can totally relate to this feeling of liberation that's been mentioned. I don't have to check I have enough ciggies and lighter to get me to where i'm going, or wonder if there will be somewhere selling them when I get there, or worry that I won't find somewhere to smoke, or that i'll be the only one smoking, or that no matter how gorgeous my perfume is its effect is ruined by my clothes and hair stinking of stale smoke, not to mention all the significant health issues that I would do my best to ignore but still be all too aware of etc etc etc.. I am just realising I can live a life that is not dictated to by nicotine urges, and that is a really exciting thought!

Thanks for your encouragement radical3, kelly1814, emlsnre and Lilli34 - its great to hear from others who have been there and done it! I think you are right, and probably being anti-social for a while is the way forward, and it won't be forever that i'm so worried about being able to stay strong but not become a bore on the subject if I'm out with friends. So i'll take advantage of the lovely evening temperatures and go for walks, or i'll catch up on DVDs and reading (I've never smoked in the house fortunately, but always smoked outside in the garden). I'll skip a few nights out over the next few weekends and there will be plenty more when i'm surer of myself. Luckily my DH is very supportive and he's never smoked, amazingly as almost all his friends do, and he'll just have cope with a few more nights in than he really enjoys but its all in a good cause! I like the idea of the iced lemon and cold sparkling water too, i'm imagining making a big deal of prepping it, chilled glass, bit of fresh mint perhaps instead of lemon sometimes, and using the making and slow sipping as a real craving quencher, and although it certainly won't replace a vodka n tonic in my affections, its good to have new things to distract my mind with. How fancy can I really make a glass of water I wonder? By the way Skykitty, what's an e-cig? ETA - I googled it and now I know what it is but thanks for the info on its illegality here. edited by muse on 03/04/2012

I am loving the after running buzz i'm getting since starting to follow the Couch to 5KM programme! Who'd have thought getting hot, breathless and sweaty while outside in a park, clothed and alone at 5.30am could be so much fun? The days I do this I find it puts me in a great mood for hours afterwards.

[ Muse; think the Embassy is trying to contact you, you need to surrender passport :D Ha ha - they can try, but i'm holding onto my Vegemite (aka Australia) very tightly, breakfast wouldn't be same without it! BTW it can be bought from Spinneys usually, sometimes Carrefour as well if anyone needs a dose of bliss. For the record, I am really not keen on beetroot in burgers or anywhere else for that matter, and not so enamoured with fairy bread either, so I can probably hold onto my British passport a while longer....?

I've seen them in Borders (Ibn branch), right by the check out - I think they were 40AED a pair. Also, i've seen them in pharmacies, most recently in the one by the medical centre in Motor City, but they were more expensive there - 50-100AED a pair, but they had more choice of frames. I hope this helps.
