Thank you Muu, this helps a lot. I see your point. Perhaps the distinction should be between a newly arrived expat coule vs. a couple that has been here a few years. Thanks again. :) ok sure no problem, how much do you normally spend and where do you buy the groceries??

What would a reasonable monthly food budget be like in the UAE for a western couple and maid? Nothing fancy; just at-home meals; (meals out and entertaining not included). Been here for two months and am spending upwards of three times, possibly more per month, of what I was spending in the US (no maid there ). I know things are more expensive here and I definitly try to buy local stuff as much as possible, but still... Would appreciate some input about your experiences. I dont know if there a difference in food budgeting between a western couple and couple from another non western country. Well, in our house its hubby, DD and I and our budget is around 800dhs and we buy other things as needed if they run out but never goes beyond 1500dhs. alot depends on where you buy your groceries from, if you go to places like spinneys, yes you be having be spending more on food, another thing to note is you would find this thing expensive in carrefour but cheaper in lulu so you have to identify which is cheaper where. good luck

DEWA bill includes water, electric (including whatever is consumed for A/C usage), sewerage, and housing fee. Other than TV/internet, maintenance etc. there is no other company billing you for services. Thank you so much for replying, you are the best :)... do you mind me asking how much is your Dewa bill.. our Emicool is around 1500- 2500 and our Dewa is another 1000... Iam also moving this june because of emicool, their bill are just too too much and unbearable

am having the same problem and to replace the faulty equipment they are asking for 500dhs, the maintenance company could not work on it because our building manager cancelled the contract with them, the maintenance people advised us to tell the land lord as he is the one to pay for all maintenance work. Am sure its the same case with you, tell your landlord and see what he has to say.

i hope all turns out well with your friends and their little one. dedicated to all the friends who just stand by when trouble comes your soul to try, you love the friend who just stands by. perhaps theres nothing they can do - the thing is strictly up to you. for there are troubles all your own, and paths the soul must tread alone. times when love cannot smooth the road nor friendship lift the heavy load, but just to know you have a friend who will stand by until the end, whose sympathy through all endures, whose warm handclasp is always yours. it helps, some way, to pull you through although theres nothing they can do. and so with fervent heart you cry, god bless the friend who just stands by. a lovely poem by b. y. williams lovely poem

My Dad is alive and well but I haven't spoken to him in years. I sometimes miss that father-daughter relationship too. work on mending the relationship with him once again while he is still alive, I wish i had a dad or mom to share my happiness and sorrows with!

Believe they keep 75% of whatever money they make and 25% alledgedly goes towards food for labourers. Atleast they are able to help the labourers even if its just 25%

I am also introducing solids to my baby now, and I dont think you need a special food processor, any good processor is fine, you can even mash the food yourself with a fork. Or, am I missing something?[/q [b'>I actually use a blender and a fork to prepare some of my DD's food, you dont need any special one just as long it does the job its intended to do.[/b'> edited by muu on 21/03/2012

I doubt if it is legal like that, [b'>maybe[/b'> that bachelor can not sponsor a house maid applies here, not sure though. Besides I would never leave my Maid to take care of DH and the house while am in another country.

well, some people here just love staring at anytjing they see, I remember how some people used to stare at me when i was heavily pregnant and i would stare back at them till they layed off their eyes out of embarrassment. Just stare back at them and it will pay off or better just ignore them

We were driving around Umm Al Quwain another weekend and 2 teenage kids on a motorbike whizzed past a labourer walking on roadside. The 2 monkeys threw their cans of drinks at him, laughing away!!! Awful behaviour that I have never seen. its sad that these kids manage to get away with such disgusting behaviour.

Im surprised because the DNRD clearly states the following : Bachelors cannot sponsor a maid, and the maid has to be a national of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Philippines, or Sri Lanka Call them....and doble check your info Have friends here with maids from: Colombia Mejico Peru this is indeed news to me too, thought only certain nationalities are allowed to work as maids here Venezuela This countries are not in your list but def. their nationals can come here and work as a maids.

maybe she was unaware they were yours ? maybe her maid was with her child that day and picked them up by mistake or maybe it was the child and she didn't want to take them off him..who knows..but when your maid then confronted her she got flustered and pretended she'd just bought them...or maybe your maid sold the toys to her or maybe it was a genuine mistake but she didn't like the way your maid approached her...who knows...take your friend's advice and just get a new bucket and spade or go see the woman yourself instead of expecting your maid to sort it out...[/q *good advice*

Thats just it, she was famous and touched many of our lives with her beautiful voice. On a previous Whitney Houston thread I have voiced my opinions on addiction from a personal perspective. My feelings on watching snippets of the funeral are ,as opposed to MJ's funeral, this was held in the church she worshipped in as a girl. The gospel singing was beautiful and heartfelt as were the words of those who knew and loved her. I think that it was as "private" as could be expected , it was televised I assume to include all her fans from all over the world. If you are bored or don't want to watch what is being shown on a particular channel, reach for the remote..... Her music brings back some wonderful memories of times past and I couldn't hold back the tears when her own voice singing " I Will always Love You" played as they carried her coffin out. As a preacher said at the funeral, "we all went to church today". Have to add CNN as they sometimes do carry on a bit after the fact. They are going over the enitire funeral again.....so reaching for the remote ;) edited by Nomad on 19/02/2012 *like*

Thanks so much Amelia. Hubby is a building services engineer. (civil background) Trying to stay positive but it is hard! My main priority is this pregnancy. Trying not to get stressed for the sake of the baby. I hav not come this far to fall at the final hurdle. Hubby and I have been through so much this past year so I have to pray that things will work out for us. x It shall be well gingercat, God will provide. I remember going through this twice within 2years, the first one I was about 4months pregnant and the second time DD was 3months old, it was the most stressful time of my life, we did our best and sent out CVs and God did the rest, within 1week, DH had 2 job offers and we chose the job that suited us. Hugs to u

Hiya :) Are you looking more for classes for your DD rather than coffee mornings? Id much prefer to go to classes with my son - I was just looking at a place called Little Gym in ibn battuta where you can try out an introductory class.. Or even kidville... But they are both quite expensive... Do you have any other ideas? X Have never attended the coffee mornings, I want some activity where my baby can have fun. I tried fun city at IBN batuta and i think she enjoyed .I checked that gym too and found it expensive. So am still looking for more activities
